We've been going here for about 15 years and when I tell you the bacon/egg croissant is fire... I can tell no lies! It's the most comforting breakfast sandwich and I'm getting hungry thinking about it now! So many delicious donuts, but very simple offerings. I love their glazed, glazed twist, and cinnamon roll. But we always get one with sprinkles and a couple jelly filled ones, which are a little lacking in the jelly filling (but they're not my jam of a donut anyway, pun intended). So I had to leave with no donuts because I didn't have 20 minutes to just sit there due to the drive time there and back in the morning. Went for the first time this morning and oh my goodness... my husband and I both agree these are the best donuts we have ever had. They were nice and fresh, a little crispy at the bottom but soft and sweet at the same time. We couldn't stop eating them! Stopped here while in Denver for a soccer tournament. The reviews almost made us go elsewhere but there are very few donut shops in the area. The donuts were around $8 for a half dozen. There is a very small selection of donuts, but you do have to option to have them filled when you order. The low ratings are a classic example of how a certain group of people shall we call it feel entitled to everything. Every business is not a colony cutter of Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. Do not come here and expect that. This is a local small business who values quality over quantity- so if you roll through and the donuts are gone try again another day or call ahead another day. It's really as simple as that. Now on to the review. This place has the absolute best donuts in Denver. Name a place and I have been there, and none of them can compare. The donuts have a light crisp in the outside and manage to be soft and amazing in the inside. The breakfast burritos are great- I don't eat meat and they have the best potato egg and cheese burrito. My absolute favorite (and yes you have to call ahead to get it entitled people) is the cinnamon roll. Oh my goodness- I saw the door to heaven when I tried the cinnamon roll. Donuts... I had a mini gathering with some friends. Since this is the nearest Donut establishment along the way to my friend's house to Marty's 47th Street Donuts, I went. I was at this establishment about 08:30hrs ish. Recent visit was on Friday March 7th 2014. Thankfully when I arrived at this establishment I managed to purchase 10 donuts. The Fancies, is $1.15 each while the Donuts is $0.75 each. I got hold of 10 donuts hence the total cost was $10.23 with tax. After I was about to leave, the next batch of donuts to be ready, I overheard from the conversation, the staff had to the other patrons, will take about 30 minutes. Hence do take your time and ONLY go if you are NOT in a hurry in case you have to wait for freshly baked/ freshly fried Donuts, OR Just CALL ahead of time. That morning the offerings, or the ones that are already made from the kitchen, were 5 dipped with Chocolate, 3 Glazed Donuts and 2 Dipped with Raspberry Glazed of some kind. 3 Stars at best. When I arrived at my friend's house, and when my friends had the Donuts, some like it, some just said OK. The Donuts are more like cake-y version of Donuts, I think. All in all Decent Donuts, though I wish they could have more variety. May return when needed. Signed up with Yelp just to review this place. I visited Marty's for my first time on Wednesday morning (5/1), around 7:25ish. I should have taken a picture while I was there; there were exactly 14 donuts available. 14! At 7:30am. A few braided glazed; even fewer chocolate braided glazed; and the rest were your typical glazed donut. I kindly asked if more donuts were on the way, and if so, approximately when? Marty's response is what prompted me to sign up with Yelp - "this is it...". So I followed up with, "ok...well...what time should I get here for a better selection?", to which Marty replied with, "this all we got". As for the donut itself - it was so-so. The first time I came to Marty's I walked right out due to there not being any donuts ready (which you will read in many of these reviews). However, over the next several weeks I would see the place full of people in the morning on my way to work, so I decided to give it another shot. The second time I went I asked a man waiting in line what he recommends and he was very excited to tell me about their breakfast burritos and croissants. In his words, "Marty's is my favorite place for breakfast, just call it in and it's ready when you get here." Since that day Marty's has been my go to donut shop for breakfast before work. Yes, many times you walk in there are not many donut options. All you have to do is call ahead of time! By doing so you always get hot, fresh donuts. None of that four hour old donut business here! I can only guess thy do this because they are a small business and don't want to throw away a lot of product at the end of the day.... or maybe he only wants to sell fresh donuts. Either way, all you have to do is call ahead and pick it up, and you will never be disappointed I promise! I am now a regular patron of this establishment. The two that work there are always so friendly and helpful. They even started to remember me after only a couple visits! Very inviting. I have called in several boxes of donuts for my employees at work and they LOVE Marty's. Regularly I order myself the sausage/bacon, egg and cheese croissant and let me tell you, it is awesome! No fake good here! Real egg, real bacon, they press out the sausage themselves (not even pre-made patties!) I can't say enough about them! Just know that all these people leaving lower ratings are upset they couldn't stroll through and get a donut immediately. Understandable I suppose. If you want that go somewhere else. I wanted to pick up some donuts for an early morning meeting and google maps sent me to Marty's 47th Street Donuts. They had a low score on yelp, but I thought I'd give this locally owned small business a chance. Initially it had a great vibe and I was excited because it looked like it had been there forever. I was at the tail in a line of three while the front-man(owner?) was getting donuts from the back room for the two customers ahead of me. I thought it was strange that there were no donuts in the case at 7:30 am on a Thursday morning, but I wasn't worried because there seemed to be plenty in the back. When it was my turn he wouldn't look me in the eyes and told me that there would be no donuts for another hour. I said "thank you" and left with no donuts for my meeting. The entire interaction felt off and left me in a funk that I couldn't place. I decided that this is either a secret spot that always sell out early (so he saved some for his regulars) or that it was just old-fashioned bad business mixed with customer discrimination. I searched reviews on yelp and google to help articulate my misgivings and I've come to the conclusion that I'm not alone in my experience and feelings. What I thought was a possible hidden gem opportunity ended up being a classic headache of "Us vs. Them" reviews mixed with poor communication and business practices by Marty's. This irked me so much that I took the time to research the dynamics at play and write a guide and warning to others. Regulars are loyal because: 1. the donuts are considered good to the regional palate 2. donuts are a secondary buy - instead they primarily get meat related foods (hamburgers, breakfast burritos, hot links, etc.) 3. they get to protect a local business they like from people they view as "outsiders" Everyone else is frustrated because: 1. Marty's 47th Street Donuts is labeled as a donut shop on yelp, google maps & google business listing 2. Marty's 47th Street Donuts is set up like a standard donut shop, but doesn't follow standard business practices for a donut shop (they require you to give notice to order a dozen glazed donuts) 3. Marty's 47th Street Donuts doesn't have donuts stocked and available for purchase during posted business hours Additional customer disappointment could be avoided with a simple name change to "Marty's 47th Street" and a change of listing on yelp/google. However, I'm old enough now to know that not every business wants or needs more business. I don't expect them to change anything. This is directed to people who would prefer to spend their metal energy elsewhere and avoid disappointment during their limited pre-work time.
