The WORST place to get your hair braided the WORST..... I was there by 9am, and only 2 braiders were there. The lady that did my 2 cornrows was awful, I explained to her what I wanted, and she kept saying ok, I said 2 cornrows and curl the ends, well, needless to say, my hair came out a mess, she put so much braiding gel on my hair was sticky and white dry looking and very itchy the worst I was so stressed and depressed about how my hair turned out. I called the night before and was told to come at 9am the next morning. I sent the pictures and was told one price but the day of received a text with a $60 price difference. I waited 2 hours for them to start my hair and the style wasn't what I showed. The braids were neat & the lady who did them was nice. She did multiple people hair while I was waiting. My extension were falling out after a week and a half. Would never in life go back to this place. The ladies at this salon have zero listening skills. Be sure to walk with a picture, a person and a mirror to convey what you want done to your hair. Then pray that you get it; because their going to do what they want to do anyway. The pricing at this salon is selective and different based on what the owner lady in the front feels. It's clear that based on appearance you can be charged a higher rate than someone else, etc. There's no pricing chart. I paid $120 more for the same hair style I've paid for at different salons. I was blocked, singled out, a seen caused, hovered over and demanded to pay the entire bill minutes into service. It was intimidating listen to the conversation and observing the body language by the tall lady in the front and staff. It was clear that they made their money by intimidation and then quickly reversing the role and playing the victim when confronted. This place was cleaner than most African hair braiding salons because it's pretty big and empty. It lacked customer service, emotional intelligence, basic respect for others. They had people waiting hours while they carried on with inappropriate and childish conversations. I was given all kinds of side eyes but the light skin, short, heavyset lady. They also discussed that I took five mins to select a color. I'm not sure if she was going to beat me. I'm assuming she was the store's mascot pit bull. They think b/c the salon is somewhat clean it gives them a pass to disrespect people in their language. I recognized the dialect and called a friend who I knew spoke the language. Even my friend was embarrassed and couldn't believe the way they conducted themselves as "African business people". Long story short the environment in Mary's African Hair braiding is toxic. I thought I would be able to enjoy my audiobook and get my hair braided. I will not be going back. It took them eleven hours to do my hair. Maybe if you guys did more braiding and less talking it wouldn't have taken so long. I noticed there were about four other salons nearby that I would be happy to try. I asked for French braids and even showed her a picture of my prev braids. They gave me cornrows NOT French braids, which were WAY too tight. I asked the stylist to loosen her grip but she didn't listen. They charged me $50 for 4 rows on 4" long hair which is absurd. it took all of 20 minutes. I'm never going back. I do recommend you go there ever unless you want the opposite of what you asked for and to have you requested style that you're paying for ignored. The comb she used on me had other peoples hair still on it so they don't clean their tools and the shop is pretty disgusting. They also don't take credit or debi, only cash or Zelle. very unprofessional and an overall bad experience. I showed her a picture, she did one braid & showed me the length & prices per length. (one being $180 and the other being $200) after she did the first braid to my liking she then freestyled every braid afterwards. it looks nothing like the picture. she braided down to shorter than the $180 length and left the ends hanging half way down my behind and charged me $200. when i asked her to fix it she said she'll only cut the ends & charge me more to get the $200 length she originally said & that i should just wear my knotless braids tied back. My daughter asked specifically for butterfly locs that Mary said she can do!!! She had the nerve to charge me 300 dollars for this style that she said she had a technique to do it and 60 for hair which was separate from the 300 dollars that wasn't what we asked for. My daughter even showed her pics to confirm what she wanted!! Mary even said my daughters hair was too short but braided her hair prior to this style months ago!!! Her husband offered to give her 100 back but I refused!!! 300 for this and on top of this horrible experience, my appointment was for 930am and Mary didn't show up until 1020 and didn't finish until after 1 in the morning!!! Wow! Entering Mary's braiding salon, felt like entering a movie of a marketplace of a shantytown shop. It exuded Muslim shrine/place of worship; place dedicated to their god, passing prayer mat on floor. Three employees stood out due to their bleaching of their skin. Disheartening to see, black women still suffering from colorism, to this degree, from beautiful Africa yet bleaching their blackness away. The atmosphere is on the grim side, an industrial feel. Not greeted by neither one of the six employees present. First sign they were unprofessional. I ask " does anyone know if you have to pay for the parking out front at this time?". One attitudinal face answered "yes". I shared getting cornrowed regular braided ponytail with hair washed. Lady hardly ran comb through my hair & barely scrubbed my scalp. How do we not know how to wash hair & scalp in a salon in 2022?!. Same attempted to blow dry my shoulder length natural hair without parting it into sections, just picking everywhere with blow dryer all over my head. Another employee raised her voice at her, took over & proceeded to roughly rip my hair first three comb throughs, then parted into sections. I stated "You are ripping my hair. I hear my strands ripping. You have to comb it out to untangle with a bigger tooth comb. Let me comb it out" (to save my hair, with never returning in mind). She continues with gentler handling with two more slight ripping comb throughs that she seemed to do by accident due to unprofessional salon habits. Why have washing service if you don't know how to properly wash & blow dry black hair? I observed how none of the six employees had healthy hair or hair was hidden; wrapped. BAD SALON SIGN!! Braider in Muslim garb came off welcoming. I handed over my bag of braiding hair (3 packs) and she said "no" waving her hand that "we have hair here to use."; prepared hair. Rep on phone said $20 per stitched braid!! I told her that I wanted regular cornrows since they were $10 per braid. I noticed in my experience is that many African braiders from Ghana, Benin, etc braid intricately & to perfection, as far as neatness & design go but they all need to do better with actually caring long-term for our black hair & to avoid harmful hair practices. Most typically do not wash hair, which is baffling. People want full service but have to do half the job of salon & still get charged hair-washing prices. Do we go to nail salon removing our prior done nails? No? You pay for full service. They are working on all kinds of customers own definition of Pre-washed hair. Unsanitary & non-hygienic practice in this hair, scalp business. Initially I was just happy I found a braiding salon, that still offered wash service but they need to train hair washers for the $30 svc. I noticed the tail comb they use looks more like a plastic knife at the end which makes sense how they part so intricately & neatly but the feeling of that comb on a tender scalp feels near slicing at times. So much experienced in this one visit. After she was done braiding I noticed she went on to braid my hair with stitched pattern that I definitely said "no" to! At this point I felt this was done on purpose & when I went to pay what looked like the boss Mary, Mary motioned for me to give her my bag with hair with an attitude that read "I know you don't think you're leaving here with that hair!". I'm like, "your employee denied me giving her the hair I bought so what you want me to do? I just said "oh" bewildered & gave her the bag of 3 packs of hair. Like lady, no one is trying to scam you for 3 bags of $5 hair. She then with a sergeant attitude orders me to write my name in notebook "190 + $30 for wash". WHAT??!! I count my braids & share with her "I have four braids in back & seven in front. How'd you get $190?". Ridiculous!! She then sucks her teeth & says "write $160 + $30". Price still incorrect. I realized braider stitched the rest of the braids outside of the first two she showed me. I just wanted to get out of the place. The tricks & scheming, especially from your own black people, I will not tolerate for an additional second. Appt 10am. 11 braids complete 1:30pm. At 1pm Muslim ritual prayer/chanting music came on loud throughout salon...taken aback at bold religious display & the time carved out to pray with my hair-dressser in the middle of the salon floor praying when I turned to give her tip. Remain informed by reading reviews before going & patronizing any establishment. Businesses aren't always ESTABLISHED nor PROFESSIONAL. People who aren't use to professional full-service salons would return for the neat & intricate style but the entire experience is not worth it whatsoever. The style was braided nicely overall but dealing with all of this, it's a never return for me. Do Not Come here if you like having edges. The women are unprofessional, the shop (esp. the bathroom) is filthy, and they all talk loudly on their cell phones while working. I told the lady that greeted me at the door that I don't want a lot of hair in my head as I run every day​ and often get headaches. Once I was seated I told the hair braider the same exact thing. Not only did it take 2 hours longer than they told me it would but I felt as if the hair was very heavy. As the day wore on I got a headache so I took Excedrin​ only to wake up the next day seeing little red bumps around my edges. Stupidy I wait 4 weeks to take my hair down and when I did I saw little hairs with the hair follicle​ attached on the sink in my bathroom. I will never go there ever again. Recently a braid fell out my head and my hair was attached that came out. I have pictures to prove. They have no set pricing they said tell me what you want & I will give you a price. Where do I even begin... If I could give this place 0 stars I most definitely would. Let me give you some background. I'm a pretty chill,sweet, and giving person. It takes a lot to get me upset and I consider myself to be understanding and patient. I felt all of those good qualities leave me as I continuedntomget mistreated by that shop. As someone who is new to the area I was texting the owner asking her questions like do they take card. If there are any atms near by. Asking what's a good time to come in so I can get a seat. The owners replies were very rude crude and impatient and I honestly wish I took this red flag more seriously. Upon my arrival I went into the shop seeing that every single chair was filled (even though I came at the time she told me). So I exited the shop and began walking a few seconds down the block. There was another shop on the same street so I was making sure I didn't go into the wrong one accidentally. When I realized that wasn't the one, I walked back to the correct shop and when I entered I was met with dirty looks. The same wiener of the shop that didn't even ackKNOWLEDGE me when I first walked in, now had a lot to say. She began to disrespectfully ask "What's wrong with me" and facetiously asked if I "Dropped my moneyy outside" and was looking for it. Then it became clear to me that she was upset that I walked to the other shop because I guess they are competitors. She then continued to rant at me about how I called her for an appointment and then went to another shop,despite when I told her my reasoning to leaving for initially leaving the store. At this point I was fired up on the inside but still kept my calm easy going composure. I was patient and didn't get rude back even though I was firm in my points. Unfortunately I was desperate to get my hair braided at this time and stayed in the shop. This is another red flag I wish I payed attention to. Now let's move on the wash. After about 30 minutes of waiting the owner asked one of the workers to wash my hair and she proceeded to roll her eyes and sigh. Then she weakly washed my hair for about 3 minutes and didn't even get into the roots of my scalp. When I asked her to wash it better or to let me wash it myself she threw a FIT. Instantly She told everyone in the salon and then I was greeted by all the workers yelling over their clients heads slandering me about being "picky" about the hair wash and bringing my own shampoo. "You should've said that from the beginning" "This girl is ridiculous". At this point I was extremely fired up. Although I was never exhibiting the rude behavior back to them, that they were presenting to me. After this I already had a wet head and an urgent hair appointment so I had to suck up my pride and finish the process. I am disgusted by this customer service. I can never see a moment where the shop workers have to BULLY a customer.. BULLY..for wanting clean hair. The wash was $15 and I expected it to at LEAST clean my hair. I will never return to this shop for services. Nor do I recommend that anyone who cares about the health of their hair goes to this braiding shop. During my first visit to the shop, I requested a popular cornrow style. My appointment was scheduled for 4pm that day. My hair was slightly damp due to me washing it. My stylist greeted me with a smile and asked me to show her a picture of the requested style. I proceeded to inform the stylist to not braid my edges due to them being soft. She informed me that she would not do them tightly. She blow dried my hair so roughly. While braiding my hair, I noticed that some of the braids were much larger than the other braids. I requested that she re-do them. While she re-braided them, she was braiding so tightly that it brought a tear to my eye. I informed her several times it was too tight. She would ease up a little bit then return back to the same level. While she was doing my hair, she was on the phone and speaking so loudly that I had to ask her to lower her voice because she was basically screaming in my ear. When she was done the braids were beautiful, but so tight around my edges. Between the tightness of the braids, her screaming in my ear, and the warmth of the shop--I could not wait to leave. Before leaving I asked to use the restroom. It was disgusting. I went home that evening and could not sleep at all. My edges were so tender and my head was pounding. I had to take Excedrin in hopes of some relief. As someone who gets their hair braided in shops often, I knew something was wrong. I returned to the shop the next day because I was still uncomfortable. I was told by other stylists in the shop that "the braids would not take out my edges," "that I would be fine," and "to place a hot towel on my edges," and "the pain would get better." I left the shop frustrated and concerned for my hair. I ended up leaving work early due to my discomfort. I sent a picture of the edges to my hair dresser. She instructed me to remove them immediately due to the bumps forming around my edges along with the redness. I called the owner of the shop to explain my situation. She told me they would return my money if I came to the shop to have them removed. I went to the shop where I was told that I would only receive a partial refund but this was never expressed to me while on the phone with the owner. I was livid. The owner told me that stylist was paid therefore she could not return all my money despite realistic concerns of damaged hair. I cut my braids out and took the money offered. As I write this review, my edges are still tender almost 18 hours later. I found my experience to be unprofessional, painful, and careless regarding he health of my hair. read more

This shop is very organized and well run. My braider Fatimah was very nice and also extremely fast. Three of us came in together and all of us we sat in the chair immediately. There is metered parking right next to the shop.... the shop is small and you could walk right pass if your not paying attention. Its your typical hair braiding shop... nothing special. The shop has about 6 or 7 chairs. The owner, Mary, is very friendly and inviting. I called before I arrived and she answered all my questions. I was quoted $60 for regular cornrows with 2 colors however once I arrived I wanted some type of design in the front. I let the stylist freestyle. The final cost was $80, the stylist did a good job ( I dont remember her name, but she was right next to Mary). I liked that she did a couple of box braids in the back to fill in the style and catch my short hair. However, I believe $20 for such a "simple freestyle" was alittle overpriced. It took about 2 hours. Also when I arrived I probably waited about 20 minutes before a stylist was ready... Nice! ****Side note: right when I walked in the stylist was finishing up a customer, she gave her a full head of twists down her back and it looked fabulous! Amazing work, I got my hair braided in philly a week before and had to take them out because they were nothing like what I wanted and when I saw reviews for here I had to give them a try, they did exactly what I wanted and the came out amazing, it's hard to get braids to stick in my head because I'm white but they did an amazing job of mixing extensions in with the braid giving it a thick full well stuck braid! Oh my goodness where do I even begin. When I found this place I was so happy to come because they did faux locs and I've been looking all over to find a shop that could do this style. So on TUESDAY i called to make an "appointment" for Saturday and they told me 9am. So today I show up very eager to get my hair done but to my surprise there were about 8 other ladies waiting as well. One worker sat everyone with a stylist , and I was so happy to just be seated. As I wanted for my stylist , a customer started to complain about other customers whom arrived after her and were being served before her. She explained that she told the owner that she needed to be out of there by 12:30. There was nothing that no one could do because every stylist had a client already. So the customer began to get aggressive, here is where it went south , so my stylist volunteered. I was immediately upset because I was a paying customer as well and I deserved the same respect. My stylist reassured me that I would be sat with the owner. When she shows up , she immediately took someone else and told me that I have to wait for my original stylist because she was the only one who could do my hair good. So I left and she came to get me and told me that if I waited she would charge me less that two people would do my hair and I didn't have to park by the meter. I was content with that. Long story short when I sat in the chair it was 1pm , I arrived at 8:50, I left at 6:42pm. Only one person worked on my hair until the end where another helped with 5 locs. My hair was extremely tight and my stylist had no mercy she pulled and pulled my hair even though I explained that it hurt. I left this place very unhappy. I'm always satisfied with my finished product at Mary's. It definitely gets busy so you will need some patience. Never had a bad experience I bring my daughter here as well. Everyone that I've encountered has been pleasant. Although they do use the phone often while doing your hair doesn't bother me. Think about it their standing and working their fingers for hours straight (what's a phone conversation). I have my headphones in most of the time anyway.
