​I am writing this review to detail a severely negative and harmful experience at Dory Hair Creation. ​Chemical Burn: During the bleaching service, the staff was negligent with the application and monitoring of the chemical products. This resulted in a painful chemical burn to my scalp and hairline, which is visible in the attached photos. This is a serious failure in professional conduct. ​Horrible Hair Services: The bleaching and color service itself was extremely poor quality. The result is patchy, unevenly lifted hair with noticeable yellow/orange tones, which is unacceptable for a professional salon. ​Price Gouging: I was charged an excessive price for a service that resulted in both a physical injury and a severely unsatisfactory hair color job. ​The combination of an immediate injury from negligence, extremely poor technical skill, and excessive pricing makes this one of the worst and most concerning salon experiences I have ever had. Literally sitting in the chair right now , they DO NOT KNOW HOW TO DO NATURAL HAIR !! They rake through your hair and fry it to death because they don't know what they're doing !! I have dead ends and they are frying my hair to death and acting like my hair is unmanageable. Unprofessional and goofy and they barely use heat protectant! I've been residing in Union County, NJ for over 4 years and have yet to experience a suitable salon for my natural 4C hair. Originally from Philly, I used to hop in my card at least twice a month and take that drive back down 95 to visit my childhood salon. I found Dory's here on Yelp, decided to take a chance and couldn't have been happier! I was super impressed with how quick I got into the chair to get my hair washed on a Friday evening! Thanks to the yelp reviews I paid a visit to Dorys today. My hair was an uneven brown and I came in the even it out and straighten it. I had an amazing experience and my hair came out perfect. While blow drying, Isabel noticed many split ends and breakage. She advised me to continue working to heal it before applying more color. She shared with me next steps that I could take to make sure I could repair the damage done to my hair. Also, my hair smells amazing!! Doris used the best products on my hair and took her time to do highlights. I have curly hair and she did beautiful highlights with so much care that at the end my hair felt softer and healthier. Went here because of all the great reviews, very very disappointed and will not return. My hair is natural and thick, I typically get roller sets and have it blown out with no issues. The stylist told me she could not roll my hair and she would have to blow it out instead. Then a different stylist proceeded to comb out my hair with a rat tail comb. Very fine tooth combs and natural hair don't mix, it hurt and was very rough on my hair. Finally, the stylist used a blow dryer to blow out my hair and then a flat iron to smooth, my hair smells like it's been in a fire. I'm praying my hair is okay after all this heat damage. read more

First time here for simple wash & set, it was empty 2pm on a Saturday when I walked in only about two ladies getting hair done. I was getting my hair washed noticed she washed my hair four times smh then when it came to putting rollers in my hair she took 30 mins bruh!! Ok so sitting under dryer for about 30 mins at that time no one was there they were cleaning packing up looking like ready to go. She comes and tell me sit in her chair I was thinkin no way my hair is completely dry. She takes rollers out it was not as curly as I know my hair gets I've had plenty of wash and sets. She begins to blow dry my hair and then tells another stylists to help her so now I have two stylist blow drying my hair same time smh wtf all this heat smh then when it was done my hair looked like I went in 200 degree weather it was super poofy she then tells me to pay $41.50 I'm like wtf for what! this!! She tells me they charged extra cuz they couldn't get my hair on a roller smh my hair is natural curly I've had wash and sets a million times and never heard any stylist have this problem with natural curly hair! I would NEVER recommend this place! I had to get my hair done again next day at my old spot it's further than I live now only reason why I was trying a new place. I've even tried two other salons on Morris Ave. Dory's is inexpensive, professional and they take very very good care of your hair. After having a bad experience with a hair salon in the previous week, I was very scared of going anywhere else. I knew eventually I'd have to in order to give my hair a chance at becoming healthy so it can grow back. After reading the many good reviews about Dory and seeing how it wasn't a far drive from my house, I'd figure it's worth a shot. I'm so glad I took a chance and came to her! She works by appointment only which can be a little inconvenient for some people like me since I'm never too good at planning ahead at when to get my hair done but I called her yesterday morning and she said I can come in as soon as possible. I was so happy to hear that she could take me in last minute. Upon walking in, her salon is spacious and clean which was a huge thumbs up compared to other places that look cramped with little seating space. She's very friendly and polite and provided me with free wifi for my phone. She even turned on the tv and asked what channel id like to watch. I went in for a perm because my hair has just been through a lot in the past two months that I just needed my roots to be relaxed. First off, I love how she applies the perm with a brush and not a comb like other places. I feel like that causes less damage to my hair since she isn't pulling on my roots. Once I told her my head was burning, she immediately sprayed some oil to relieve the pain and then proceeded to wash it out after the pain got worse. She was gentle with the washing and didn't dig her nails deep into my head like other places I've been too. She put me in rollers of my choosing and set me under the dryer. She checked up on me a couple of times and even asked if I wanted water which I found very nice of her to offer. Upon being taken out of the dryer, she blow dries the roots of my head a little bit and proceeds with using a straightener to curl my hair. I was a little skeptical because me and flat irons don't have a good history lol. They've always left my hair smelling burnt and I just feel as if it is always left in my hair too long that it damages it in the process. I let her go on with the straightener because she's been doing such a good job with everything else that I trust her with the straightener....... My hair looked AMAZING! It really didn't smell burnt at all. Maybe initially when she passed it through my strands but as soon as I left the salon, my hair smelled normal which is amazing because in the past, my hair smelled burnt for a day or two after using a flat iron. I also loved how she didn't leave the straightener sitting on my hair which I believe is a huge reason as to why it did not smell burnt. Dory is great! She takes her time to tend to your specific needs and she's gentle with your hair. My perm came out great and I will definitely go back to her again! My hair is smooth and soft and bouncy. So I've been here twice. I was going to make it a permanent spot because I liked the vibe there. The lady combed my hair properly from the bottom up, but she was a bit talkative & my hair dried ‍ so she had to re wet it. But the problem began when she gave me the bill. She included her own damn tip in my bill ($5) & then when I gave them my debit card it became 27.50 !!!!! Tell people you're going to charge a 1.50 for the card transaction! But I took my hair out today, I got it done yesterday and it looks terrible ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE ! Like I was in a wind storm and I just brushed it out. This is the first real Beauty Salon that I have come across in the Union County that pays attention to their clients. I am from Brooklyn NY and have to relocate due to being newly engaged. It's a very neat and professional environment. They have parking in the rear of the salon. I like the treatment that I received. That I really feel that I found a new home away from home. It's not easy to find a place close to house that's not going to cost a lot or tell you that we don't do your type of hair. Dory's salon is excellent in my book. read more

I recently moved to Union from Essex County and i needed a hair dresser. I researched hair salons in Union and came across a positive yelp review for this salon, so i decided to try it out. They are wonderful. They make you feel at home as soon as you walk through the door. They are very professional and courteous. I usually call and schedule an appointment and i am never left waiting for unreasonable amounts of time. I love the way Dory does my hair. Horrible place my daughter 19 years old when there for dye her hair and the lady over charged her for $225 dollars. She has some price post in the board inside but it's no true and even have some discounts online for students that's not true neither and her hair has not even came in the right color my daughter has black spot. Had a very similar experience as reviewer Joi. After reading all the positive reviews, I decided to go there for a relaxer. Worst experience ever! Left there with a sore scalp and fried hair. I think at least 1/3 of my hair came out as Dory fought and pulled on it. I'm giving the salon 1 star because the staff was nice. However, if you have delicate hair, please do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. Dory is nice and all but who puts water mixed with hairspray/hair spritz on freshly washed/ deep conditioned hair as a detangler and leave-in and then pulls on your hair and scalp followed by heat to soften the hair. And what's sad is i left the salon with hair is hard as straw and absolutely no body. She fooled me...thought she was spraying water for moisture but nope her spray bottle was mixed with hairspray. My biggest regret is not getting out of her styling chair with my head wet and making a run for the front door. And let's not talk about expensive- I paid 65 bucks for the worst service i've ever had. This coming from someone who has gotten her hair done regularly by Dominican hair salons for the last 16 years. Should have taken the drive to my usual spot in the next town over and paid the usual 40 for gorgeous hair. read more
