Such a cute place with a hometown family feel. Lots of seating, although no booths. Service was good from start to finish, hostess sat us right away on a busy Saturday morning. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. The menu has a good amount of options. Opted for the sausage biscuit and gravy along with a cinnamon roll pancake. I got a2-piece (you get to choose which pieces) and hush puppies and fried okra with a lemonade. It was very good, especially the chicken. On our home bound trip from WDW we decided to eschew the main highways and take a scenic route. DD yelped a place for lunch and we found Mary's Cafe in Tavares. A low slung cinder block building on the side of a country road it would have been easy to drive past but with 4.6 rating that wasn't happening! Inside it like you stepped back to an earlier time. There was a white board with their current specials honoring being in business for 18 years. Lots of tables in a few rooms. Clean and comfortable it just feels like place to get good old fashioned food. We were greeted warmly and promptly seated. Our server was very nice and answered all our questions. We started with cheese curds. They were a bit larger than the cheese curds I am used to, almost like mini cheese sticks but they were very tasty. They serve them with a nice tomato sauce. DD ordered the catfish fillets with corn nuggets and peaches. I ordered a grilled Rueben with spicy fries. DD really like the catfish. It was lightly breaded and very tender. Strangely the corn nuggets had a dusting of powdered sugar. They were good though. Her peaches were obviously canned but she loves that. My sandwich was good. The corn beef was not sliced like deli corned beef but in pieces that fell off the sandwich but it was excellent corn beef. I think my personal preference would be more sauerkraut but overall I'd say it was an above average Rueben.it was served with a huge portion of curly fries. Their fried catfish is yummy. It is a good "Kountry" restaurant with gravy and biscuits, fried baloney sandwiches, etc. The two things we don't order there are fried shrimp (aren't good) and their grits aren't salted at all. Naomi is a wonderful server, ask for her. One way you can tell how good a place is by all the police that eat there. Another local winner! Very much enjoyed lunch at this place. We opted for lunch instead of breakfast. Cute little place with locals everywhere. I had the hamburger steak with mashed potatoes, grilled onions and brown gravy. My wife had the anniversary special cheeseburger. Both were fantastic and cost about $20 for both. Service was prompt and everyone pitched in. Will be back and try breakfast. The service was superb, thank-you to Ciara. I ordered the haddock dinner, all you can eat. The first round is the only one you can get broiled which is too bad since the broiled was so delicious. The fried haddock wasn't as tasty as the broiled haddock. The mashed potatoes, green beans and corn fritters were good. It was pretty crowded, so seems to be very popular.My spouse had the liver & onions and enjoyed it thoroughly. It was cooked perfectly, seasoned mildly. I would've given 5 stars, but we ordered dessert that was not fresh. The lemon merengue pie was sour and the carrot cake was super sweet probably from the frosting. Although it contained coconut...that was a nice surprise. Definitely a hidden treasure of a restaurant worth the drive no matter how far away you live. The food is terrific, the place is maybe a converted old brick house, the parking lot is small but you can park out back on the grass. The servers are pleasant, kinda casual typical for a country diner. The pies are frequently selling out so you gotta get a slice when you can. The daily specials are usually worth a try too. Seriously Mary does a real prime rib on Fridays that is soo good, tender juicy really good. The menu contains the basics but offers a bit more but doesn't pretend to be upscale. Good food fair prices, pleasant staff, owner onsite occasionally too. It's off the county road about halfway between Zellwood and Tavares close to Deer Island which is on the south side of Lake Dora. Been driving by this place for a bit, decided to stop. Went inside for lunch, rather than nice little place. They have both breakfast and lunch and I'm not sure but they might be open for dinner. The food was fabulous. Just don't look at the desserts. I so wanted to start at that end first and forget about my lunch lol service is quick and very pleasant. I decided to have a Reuben. It comes with fries. This is the first Ruben I had where they actually chopped all the meat. The sandwich was packed full of the corned beef and sauerkraut mixture. Quite tasty. Hamburger n fries....ok BUT a Kowboy Burger? Scrumptious beef, cheese, grilled onions in bbq sauce topped with fried jalapeño slices on a warm, grilled bun. Catfish fried to perfection, Scott's fried chicken, and Brunswick Stew to name a very few favorites. And make sure to ask for a doggie bag BEFORE your meal gets there because once you take a look at the desserts you will need that extra room. Your first visit will not be your last! Feel good breakfast at a reasonable price. Mary's is always packed and that usually means good food so we stopped in for breakfast yesterday and it did not disappoint! The service was fast and friendly even though they were busy, the food was hot and delicious, and the decor was cute. I had chocolate milk, homemade corned beef hash with scrambled eggs, cheese grits and toast. My husband had the chicken biscuit with grits and a sweet tea. Everything was accurate, perfectly cooked and yummy! The homemade hash was made with chipped beef and was so flavorful. I don't usually like country gravy, but on the chicken biscuit it was perfect. Thought my directions were wrong and almost turned around, sure glad I didn't. Mary's is in a small old building. On the weekend you're going to wait to get in. Service was great, our waitress never let my coffee run out. Food prices were very reasonable. Most had smoked ham and they loved it. I had the country ham and it was excellent. I have officially proclaimed this to be the best breakfast we have had since moving to Florida. We live in Kissimmee which is the land of chain restaurants. I like to support local businesses and see what they have to offer. In our journeys to Lake County, we came across Mary's and what a treat! Everyone was super friendly and helpful. The parking lot and overflow lot were full but we were pleasantly surprised to see lots of empty tables. The corned beef hash was delicious. Homemade and had a nice crisp to it.
