Vegan combo menu
Ashley L.

My first impressions when walking into Mary's Place was how homey and warm the diner felt. It fells like you are walking into your grandmother's kitchen. We were greeted immediately by a really friendly lady who also noticed our posters we were carrying from a protest we just attended. She gave words of support and proceeded to answer my questions regarding a vegan menu. She said that they will take care of us and answer any questions. Basically anything they have they can accomodate us and also mentioned they do lots of gluten-free options as well. When browsing the menu, I noticed many options and one really cool feature was their vegan combo menu listed on the bottom. Three items for 10 dollars and any additions are only 2 dollars extra. For Halifax, that is truly a fantastic deal. Hubby and I both went for combos. Many of the dishes are Indian in orietation. I ordered the garlic potatoes, basmati rice and veggie patty. It arrived promptly and was a good size portion. The garlic dip was a bit discerning when looking at it but we called over the waitress and she assured us that it was vegan, with no animal ingredients. The food was tasty, filling and satisfying. I loved the potatoes! We both enjoyed our meal and the pleasant service we received, as well as it being extremely affordable. Next time I hope they have vegan ice cream in so I can get myself a vegan milkshake. :)

SUCH small kebabs!
Andrew P.

On a whim, some friends and I tried out this restaurant on Spring Garden, and I will say I will not be back soon. I ordered the dolmades and the lamb shish kebab with the homemade hot sauce. When the food arrived I was shocked and dismayed on just how small the kebab chunks were, I will have to upload a photo as soon as I can just to show...how small they were (the size of a nickel each.) At 11.99$ I expected more than this. However the hummus, garlic lemon sauce and the dolmades, were three bright points in the meal, as the kebab was both small and unremarkable. The hot sauce arrived later after a second request, and tasted and had a consistency akin to chili flavoured water. This leads me to the conclusion, that the vegetarian options, though slightly pricey for my taste, are the best choices. The ambiance of the setting itself, also leave much to be desired. A combination of bright beige walls and even brighter lights give the impression that the diner is in a hospital ward. Be that as it may, for as bad as the lighting and the hot sauce, the service was even worse. While my fellow diner waiter for a second water/coffee/and rice pudding, the waitress sat and chatted with friends at the back of the restaurant. I ended up practically shouting at the waitress to order the rice pudding that came with my friends meal, not to mention the coffee that it seemed she had no intention of bringing. When the pudding in question arrived, it was very that: questionable. After several tentative bites my friend could not bring herself to eat it and passed it on to myself who found that it had the odour of an uncleaned fridge. This was the first time that I have not left a tip, and I doubt I will ever be back.

the 'basic' breakfast
Rachelle B.

2nd visit here was early in the morning on a dark Monday in March and there was only one other customer there. I tried the 'Basic' breakfast ($8.00) which is your typical toast, hashbrowns, two eggs, choice of meat (got the bacon). It was filling, standard, not memorable, but no complaints. Not very much else to say. Normal service. Nothing would draw me here in the near future, but if I lived in the neighborhood I would probably go back from time to time.

Teeny-tiny and in pure box form, Parseh Shiraz House is small but mighty. Its bold colors and…read morelingering scents are enough to remind passer-byers that they are open and ready to serve, and who am I to resist. Everything here seems to be of the "old family recipe" merit, and I'm fairly certain that this is actually a family run business. Food is rich, delicious and super spicy... not for everyone, but for everyone sometimes. I picked up a kashk-e-bademjan (eggplant puree with whey) to go, and the feast at home was superb. Not a bite left from this generous serving, this was a dish with its own flavor. I wouldn't suggest dining in at Parseh, just because its so small. A browse through the menu and pick-up is a great idea, as this is quality food and like nothing I've had before. Yum!

"So I had lunch at Shiraz today." "Where?"…read more"Shiraz, the Persian place on Hollis." "...." If you've eaten here and told anyone about it, you've had some sort of variation on the above conversation, as I have several times now. Shiraz has been around for a while, and I've been meaning to try it. Finally one day I thought of it at work and a co-worker and I went there to pick up a quick lunch. Shiraz would count as a hole in the wall, if it wasn't also the wall. It's small, and painted a funky colour, yellow or green; I just remember my eyes being assaulted a little bit. We happened to have a menu at the office so we were able to go in there knowing what we wanted. At first glance, the first thing that strikes you is the prices - the first kebob plate listed is a hefty $18.99 for two kebobs and rice. Mind you, it is veal and lamb, but for the sake of avoiding sticker shock, they might want to re-design the menu to ease people into the pricey stuff. Being somewhat mindful of my budget, I settle on a dish that's more easy on the pocket but looks like it will be quite filling, the zereshk polo. Described as a chicken stew that comes with saffron basmati rice and barberries. After a short wait at one of the few tables inside the restaurant, we're sent on our way with our food to have back at the office. Interestingly, a quarter chicken is served on top of the rice, but what appears to be the actual stew is served separately in a bowl. The chicken is moist and has a good chicken flavour, but is oddly lacking much else. The stew has a hearty flavour of tomato and onion, although it's quite oily, whether from the chicken or added oil. In retrospect, I should have poured it over the chicken and rice, although my desk may not have been the best location for that, so this oversight may have been for the best. I haven't had saffron rice or much of anything flavoured with the most expensive spice in the world, and I must say I wasn't particularly impressed. The only way I could describe it is...musty. Yeah....not too flattering. Shiraz has some potential and I'd definitely give them another try, especially the samosas which seem to be quite popular with other posters, but as things stand now, it was just a little lacking.

Like most office building spots, Castello is a straight up lunch place. There's several tables for civil servants to get away from their cubicles at, with a main counter that you line up at and choose your food with the aid of the menu on the back wall or the pile of food in trays before you. There's always a few different salads, rice and pasta dishes as well as mains that vary from day to day such as lasagna, roasted quarter chicken, fried fish and even salmon when I stopped by most recently. The one thing holding them back from 4-star territory is that they microwave anything that needs reheating, which doesn't do justice to nearly all foods. You can order various cooked-to-order breakfast foods and grill items like burgers however. A couple of my favourite things to order on my regular visits are the falafel and kibbe wraps. Warm and moist falafel or kibbe get broken up and put in what must be at least 12" wide pitas, absolutely stuffed with lettuce, tomato, pickles and banana peppers with as much tahini as you desire, which in my case is a pretty generous amount. Either one you get is going to be a winner, and I suggest that if you get one for lunch, have half now and the other half later in the afternoon or for dinner, otherwise you will be seriously full and risk falling asleep at your desk. The kibbe are also really good just as a platter, with rice and your choice of salad. Oh, and did I mention that this delicious gut buster will set you back a mere $8? Yup. Leave them the toonie, they deserve it. The family that runs this place is super friendly, and you'll be seriously challenged to spend more than $10 on the very decent food here, so pop down the alley for lunch.

Phew, talking about this sort of stuff really does make you feel better! Now that they're back and only a few minutes away from both my office and apartment, I put PG's v2 on my list of places to hit. Back on a weekday day shift for the first time in nearly a month and with the sun making for a warm walk, I decided that it was the perfect day to break my PG's cherry. Going there slightly early to beat the lunch rush, half of their handful of tables were occupied, a good sign for a Monday. I had heard from a couple of my co-workers that the chicken skewers were a good choice, so I got an order of those along with rice and Greek salad on the side to go. After a bit of friendly chatter with the staff, my skewers were soon off the grill and I was on my way back to the office with a full container of food at a very reasonable price. Plopping down at my desk, I was ready to dive into my meal. The two chicken skewers were tender and moist and had a nice Mediterranean flavour to it. Naturally, I mixed some of the chicken in with my rice, along with some tzatsiki. Fantastic. I got the first serving of their batch of Greek salad, so it was loaded with salty feta, along with cucumber, romaine and tomato, it made for a very fresh tasting, light lunch. I'm looking forward to more lunchtime visits to PG's to try their burger and lasagna, and to try to make amends for my past shame by stuffing my face with their delicious eats.
