Small family business located on Hollis Street is small but wow can they produce some yummy food. Walking into this little gem of a location you were greeted by a warm and friendly atmosphere. Now there are not alot of tables but service is fast so the tables will turn quickly. Now depending on what time of day that you go you can enjoy some delicious pancakes, bacon and eggs for breakfast and free coffee refills. Or you can chow down for lunch on healthy sandwich or salads. Yes there is more on the menu but you will have to stop by and see as I can not give all the secrets away. Yummy, fast and filling. Hidden in the base of an office tower, this place offered a wide selection of sandwiches, salads, and other specials. Service was fast and friendly. We were pleasantly surprised by how tasty the food was! While not quite 100% authentic, the shawarma was delicious. The fried haddock held its own versus some of the top joints in the UK, and the other sandwiches were great as well. Avoid the tourist traps and try this place! read more

This is one of the best downtown takeout lunch spots. Great service, awesome prices, and loads of options. I knew I loved this place a lot when they allowed me to order a "salad trio" comprised of couscous, rice, and grape leaf rolls. The description of what 2 Stars means on the Yelp web page sums up my opinion on the food at Anna's perfectly: "Meh. I've experienced better." This restaurant moved into the basement of the BMO building on the corner of George and Lower Water streets about 2 years ago, moving from their old location a block away. I went in shortly after their move to try it out. I tried a Mediterranean combo plate that was very mediocre. What really put me off Anna's wasn't the so-so food quality, but it was the way I saw her treat a member of her staff. The staff member was trying to serve me, but Anna needed something in the back and rudely barked at her employee to bring something to her in the back room. If you're going to be an a-hole to your staff, that's just mean. But if you're going to be an a-hole to your staff in full view of customers, that's also foolish. So that put me off Anna's for a LONG time. I went back to Anna's this week for two reasons. 1) It was pouring rain. 2) Anna's is right next door to my office. I picked up a wrap that was, unsurprisingly, OK but not great. Based just on the food, I wouldn't go back to Anna's again unless their is another storm and I'm more interested in staying dry than having a decent lunch. As for the way Anna treats her staff, I'll say one more thing on that. My experience from over a year ago stuck in my head and I mentioned it to a colleague at work before I wrote this review. She recounted a similar experience that she had at Anna's. That confirmed for me that what I saw first hand likely wasn't an isolated incident. read more

I love this place. Love love love. It pretty much makes my week when work friends and I troop down the road for Falafel Friday. Be prepared -- the falafel pita is filling just on it's own, so order the platter only if you're super hungry. Pitas are made to order, and often come with a side serving of hilarious service from Anna and Co (very clear it's a family run business -- sneak peek into very funny family dynamics over pita). If you like spice, order extra hot pickles. With a side of delicious hummus. Wow, I think I just drooled a little bit. Is it Friday yet? I've had a couple of the side salads (tabouleh, lentils and rice, pasta salad) and they've all been great as well. Usually the platter is a bit too much for me though, so I stick with the pita alone. One of my new lunch go-to spots in downtown Halifax! It's a small little cafe so it can get quite busy over the lunch hour but it's worth checking out. What I love about Anna's? 1 - Fresh ingredients - you can see all the yummy veggies and spreads while they make your meal. 2 - Loads of selection - feeling a pita? Lebanese? Breakfast (during certain hours)? Salads? They do it all. 3 - Fast and friendly service - I was in an out with my food in between 5-10 minutes. Now it might get busier with the lunch rush but that's a-ok in my books. 4 - Reasonable prices - you can easily get a hearty lunch for $10 or under. Sold! read more

Anna's is a discrete little venue on Hollis Street with some quality bites. Lebanese dishes, sandwiches, soups and café style bevies--- its a lovely stop if you're in the neighborhood. Family owned, and food from scratch, visitors can take comfort in the quality of their purchases. And while my sensitive tum cannot always handle the heftiness of a Lebanese dish, the tea and treats are complimentary to its welcoming atmosphere. Breakfast is served, and includes the full bodied plate you may be craving. Pancakes, eggs, bacon and home fries can be just what the doctor ordered for some. This isn't a reoccurring frequent for me, but I hold Anna's with kind regards. A fine local venue with quality cuisine, its the perfect place for the right palate. read more

Do you need a place to eat breakfast or lunch while in Halifax at reasonable prices? Does it need to be near all the major attractions? Do you want great personal customer service? Then Anna's is the place for you. We found this cozy and homey place towards the end of our stay and ate there for breakfast. We fed a family of four (two teens who can eat!) for less than it would have been to eat at a chain restaurant in the U.S. with "okay" food! Here, the food was fresh and it was tasty. The best part were the home fries. We were also personally served by Anna herself. What a lovely woman. She made the experience so much better. While I was there, I saw some of her lunch options...many delicious and fresh Mediterranean dishes (cous cous, tabbouleh, cucumber, etc). Wish we had discovered this treasure earlier in the trip. Anna's is a great place to break from the hustle of vacation, to enjoy great cuisine, and to be treated with excellent customer service. read more

Had never the opportunity to try here as I work in Fairview and they are only open during weekday business hours. One Thursday morning in August I was up very early downtown so stopped in to see what it was like. I had seen it listed online, but never saw the location from the outside before, so assumed it was in one of the office buildings. Looked up the address, showed up at 5151 George St, went in the main doors, sign a sign that said it's in the basement level, took the elevator down one flight, and it wasn't hard to find at all. Then I notice there's a building exist right on that level, which brings you out to a raised walkway on the Water St side, so I took that when leaving. Anyway, there was only one customer inside when I arrived, who had obviously already ordered and was waiting for his food. I stood there a minute or two before I saw anyone working, but was in no rush, so no big deal. Looking at their overhead menu I decided to go for the veggie omelette w home fries and toast. When the lady, I assume Anna, came out, she was quite friendly. I ordered there and she pointed out the coffee urns to pour yourself, then that she would bring the food to my table. There is seating for at least 50 or 60 people I would guess. Just a simple cafeteria like atmosphere with several tables and booths, a TV with the news on, cooler to get cold drinks, etc. The food arrived probably in 5 mins and was good, very standard and not memorable, but zero complaints. I sat watching the news and eating, peaceful and no other customers came in, which makes me feel bad for them. Maybe it was just too early in the morning (between 7 and 7:30 or so). read more

I recently had lunch at Anna's Café and Grill. It is a small café on Hollis Street, between Duke Street and George Street. They offer breakfast as well as Lebanese lunch. I went there around noon and had the shawarma platter which consisted of the shawarma (pita wrap) itself, rice, and a salad. It is not really a restaurant in the strict sense - you order your food from the counter where my pita wrap was assembled according to my instructions and where I could choose from one of the salads in the fridge (I went with the pasta salad). The pita wrap is then toasted on a two-plate electric grill. (Which helps to be able to eat it without it falling apart.) The pita wrap was really very good. The salad was good too but the rice (with lentils) was only so-so. Including a large bottle of Diet Pepsi (710ml = 24 fl oz) I paid $9.56 plus tax. I would like to give 3.5 out of 5 stars but since that's not possible I'm giving 4 out of 5 stars. The food is good and the place is nice, but it's not original enough or restaurant-like enough to warrant full stars. It reminds me a bit of something you would find in a food court or on a university campus, not a standalone restaurant. Note that they also seem to do a lot of catering for nearby offices - and for some reason their website, which you can visit at http://www.mamaannagrill.com, only talks about the catering side of their business. The catering menu on the website does however give you an idea of the type of food they sell and of the price range. read more

Garbage food. The only reason I eat there once in a while is because I work in the building that Anna's lives in the basement of. If you want cold bland sandwiches, save the money and pack one at home. If you want disgusting burnt eggs and inconsistent serving sizes, come to Anna's. Even if the food was delicious (it's not), the service is enough to never go back. I always see the cook in the kitchen eating, licking his fingers or with food hanging out of his mouth. The cash is not much better, as you are treated as an inconvenience the minute you walk through the door. read more

This was a great little family-owned cafe which serves breakfast and lunch. The service was super friendly and the food very fresh. They were very accommodating with customizing my omelette. The daughter takes your order and helps around the restaurant, and is super friendly and the father is the chef. I believe this place has been around for five years. It may not look like much from the outside, but it is well located and not an overpriced tourist trap! read more

Great no frills cafe! We chanced upon the cafe after getting hungry at noon. It's a lovely place that's fairly priced. I tried the ham and cheese special with chicken broth which was a tasty meal for 6.99 and very tasty. My friends enjoyed their meals as well. Service was quick. read more

Good place for simple breakfasts. Economical but good quality food. The host is very welcoming and accomodating. I would highly recommend that the owners offer middle eastern dishes on top of what they already offer. Our visit to Halifax craved for more variety and Anna's Cafe could offer more sophistication to that area of downtown. Adding more variety may help them overcome the effect of an inherently "hidden" location; we walked by and did not notice the place. read more

Do not pass through here without scrutiny. At first, Anna's might pass as a friendly, well functioning environment but in the few minutes it takes to receive your lunch, I hope you will begin to notice what goes behind the scenes. The kitchen is not clean. You can make a "home cooked meal" but that doesn't mean you should treat your kitchen like you do at home. A more sanitary environment is needed to ensure food safety/quality. Staff are exploited and hired under false pretenses. If it is busy or she is stressed, this will reflect on how Anna treats her staff resulting in stressed and undervalued workers. Tips are not distributed but are kept by the owners. This is not ok and beware of this if you decide to give them your business. I strive to support local, small business, this is how communities keep their character and survive. I will pass on Anna's however, as you should too because putting food quality and safety at risk as well as not treating employees with equity and respect is something that I will not support. read more
