This woman is completely incompetent! I am a costume maker for professional theater. My daughter-in-law brought me her formal gown that needed hemming on short notice. I was completely swamped with my own work and working a narrow hem on chiffon is not something I normally do, so I thought I would take it to a supposedly professional tailor who could do it better and faster than I could. Boy, do I regret that decision! There is a very specific way to hem chiffon which is NOT to cut first - this is exactly what she did and so there is no good way to work a narrow hem after that and on top of that it was uneven and she GLUED the front slit. I honestly don't know what to call this type of work other than butchery by someone who clearly has no idea what they are doing. You would do better with your local dry cleaner. read more

Mary is fantastic. I had two dresses that needed to be shortened in the back They were not straight hems and therefore had to be cut. Mary BUTCHERED my Eileen Fisher surplice dress that I asked to be reduced from size 6 to size 4. The hem was raggedly cut, there were loose threads I had to remove, she didn't trim the excess fabric where she took in the side seams, and the bodice gathers were uneven. My elegant dress was turned into a lousy high school project. I didn't go back for fear she'd do further damage. As a petite, I have had many items tailored by someone who has since retired so I tried Mary. Never again. I have no idea why she has great reviews except that she is engaging and chatty, and is conveniently located w parking. read more

Mary is an honest woman who provides quality service for reasonable prices. She is very personable - you'll walk in for the first time and feel like you've know her for years. I had a beautiful high waisted pant that I needed hemmed and she priced it at $10 and it was ready in 2 days. She has great input and really loves what she does. Its just her working so sometimes it can get quite a bit crazy if there are a lot of people in there at once. If you are looking for a tailor that does great work fast and is affordable Mary is your tailor. She had my bridesmaid dress altered in 4 days and only charged me $15. The dress is strapless so she added elastic to the top so that it fits to my body and I will be able to dance without the dress falling. I have never been to a tailor before and had several pants I needed to get hemmed and taken in at the waist that I was hesitant to bring to an average dry cleaners (one was my favorite pair of jeans). Mary did a beautiful job and they fit me Impeccably! She is such a sweet and encouraging lady and is very honest. Mary advised me in the practical course of action to get darts put in the pants instead of taking out the entire leg seam because it would be less labor intensive and therefore cost less. I brought in four pairs of pants, she told me they'd be ready the next day and I was shocked but she was right. She said she didn't mess around and I did in fact pick them up the next day. read more

I recently called to inquire about Mary's price range for a simple service on a dress I own. I described the clothing in detail with full awareness/understanding that any good tailor would need to see the product to give a final price-- I simply wanted to gauge her range, which is something I've done with other shops. Mary responded incredibly blunt and rude to my inquiry, as if me wanting an idea of her service rates was unheard of or ridiculous. Her response was also quite condescending. This exchange was not only unnecessary, but it was a tremendous turn off. Overall, I will not patronize Mary's business and I caution others about her attitude, as well. Mary is exceptional. I was to be a bridesmaid 2 weeks after giving birth. The dress size I purchased before the baby was born was a 'best guess' as to what size and shape my body would be in after the baby. Of course it didn't fit across the bust. I've taken several items to Mary over the last couple of years and finally reached the point where I'm just not willing to deal with her sloppy workmanship anymore. I've only ever taken things that need hemming, nothing complex, but literally EVERY single item needed to be redone because she didn't get it right on the first try. She hemmed a flower girl dress for my daughter to wear in a wedding, after two tries the hem was straight but it actually came down *during* the wedding. She hemmed a pair of jeans with one leg longer than the other and did not bother to match the original stitching color. She fixed the pants and I went back to pick up a couple days later. They were fine, but what a waste of my time having to make an extra trip. She does things quickly and poorly and does not pay attention to details. I've found when pointing out things done incorrectly that she attempts to convince me that I am wrong--she did this even when the two legs of the pants were clearly about 1/4 inch different in length ("oh it will even out when you put them on" - I put them on and shockingly they were still different lengths!). Most recently I took in two pairs of identical knit lounge pants. Both were done SO sloppily, the topstitching on the hems was wavy and on one pair the stitching was tangled and actually coming loose when I picked up the pants. I pointed it out, she promised to fix and had me come back. I was so frustrated that when I picked them up the next day I did not bother to check the hem, because I didn't want to go back there ever again. Of course the hem is still wavy and a different part of the stitching is tangled and coming loose. I would rather pay to have the hem redone by someone else who will get it correct the first try rather than waste my time making repeated trips to Mary so she can continue to do sloppy work. BOTTOM LINE: Her work is sloppy and you will waste your time and money repeatedly trying to get her to do simple things correctly. Additionally, I find her shop to be messy and unclean and her personally to be somewhat dismissive and abrasive. Go elsewhere. read more

A hard-working woman who gives great advice (e.g., don't hang a heavy dress for long periods by the shoulder or it'll stretch out and not fit like it did! Oops) and prices fairly. After calling several tailors in Philadelphia who were overbooked, I called Mary to ask if she had availability to hem one formal gown for a wedding 1.5 weeks away. I told her I understood it was short notice. She told me she was very busy but she could squeeze it in if I brought the dress in that day. I told her I might not get off work in time for that same day, since she was a 40 min drive away, and she said she would be around even later than her listed hours, just knock on the door before 7pm. I arrived at 6:30p and when Mary answered the door she told me she was too busy she couldn't help me. I reminded her that we had spoken on the phone earlier and that I had driven 40 minutes to get to her shop, and she said "I'm sorry, I normally don't do things like that, but I'm just too busy. I have 3 bridesmaid's dresses to do before that Saturday." She told me to go to a nearby tailor the next morning, and I explained I had to work the next day. She again said I'm sorry, and shut the door in my face. read more

Unfortunately, both times I went in, she refused to help me! Both times were fairly simple alterations, but she refused because she was too busy with "more important" things. I got my graduation dress from online the day before graduation, and it was HUGE. The size was completely wrong and I didn't have time to order another one. I called at least five shops before I called Mary's shop, and every one of them said it was impossible to help me with the dress. But when I told Mary about my situation, she asked me to stop by and show her the dress, and she told me that she would definitely get it done by tmw. Three hours after I dropped off the dress, she called me and asked me to come and try it on. And it fits perfectly! Mary stayed after the closing hour for my dress because she knew that I would be miserable if I didn't have it done by tomorrow. She is so nice and friendly and great at her job. Incredibly disappointed. My dress is ruined. Orange thread used for the hem of my coral dress - very noticeable. Also the tension was far too loose and the hem was not straight - too this Mary argued that it was perfect. It clearly was not. I might not been as upset if she had admitted it wasn't perfect but that it was a challenging fabric and that was the best she could do. She told me that there are more important things in this world and my dress was fine and not important. Sure in the grand scheme of things it is not important but when I pay $20 for a hem I would like the dress to be wearable. read more
