Love to tell you about the food but we didn't get that far. Couldn't get pass the dirt and attitude. I was taking my son out for his birthday dinner with a total party of 5. We had reservations and the host was very nice. That was the end of the hospitality. The waitress assigned to our table, had an attitude she presented in advance of asking for our order. When she said the nightly special was not available, we were disappointed. She suggested I order the "bambino' spaghetti as an adult entree. We told her we needed a few more minutes to look at the menu again. She turned and huffed away. Huffed! Why didn't the host tell us they didn't have anymore lasagna? She ruined what could have been a salvageable situation. She finally sent a different waitress to serve us. We got up and left. read more

I returned here with a small group on a rainy February evening for the first time in years. This was my first time back since 2009, during which Marzano went out of business for a few years, was replaced by an extremely unappealing looking British gastropub, then was brought back to life in its current larger space. But did Marzano really *need* to come back? I'm not entirely convinced that it did, at least based on this particular meal. My main gripe from my previous two reviews of the original Marzano still stands: mediocrity. They really need to step up their game when it comes to the flavors of their food. They're just not doing enough to truly dazzle the palette by creating unique, memorable, complex flavors. Instead, much of their food, even when good, really isn't interesting enough to make for a truly memorable experience. On this occasion, we started off with the crisp porcini and spring onion arancini, which were friend risotto balls with a sweet and spicy tomato jam. Despite the fact that *none* of us could detect even the slightest hint of porcini flavor (and the wife and I *love* porcini), these were still quite good, and the tomato jam added a nice layer of flavor. As long as you pretended that porini weren't mentioned in the name of the dish, this was really enjoyable. But their main dishes got a more mixed response. I ordered papardelle with rabbit sugo, which was honestly bland and one dimensional. It wasn't bad, per se, just nothing to get excited about, and the papardelle were a little overcooked. Maybe more aggressive seasoning and use of herbs could've elevated this mediocre dish. Another in our group ordered the local chanterelle and spring onion pizza. The chanterelle mushrooms were in short supply on this pizza, and most of the flavor came from the goat cheese (which overpowered the other ingredients when you got a bite of it), pancetta, spring onions, and egg. Despite an exquisite wood-fired crust, the pizza was just merely decent. More chanterelles please! The spicy fennel sausage pizza that someone else in our group ordered was actually better. The flavors all came together nicely (rather than compete, as they did in the other pizza), and again, the crust was excellent. Possibly the best main dish of the evening. Someone else ordered the braised chicken all'arrabbiata. The tender braised chicken came swimming in a thick, acidic, spicy sauce of tomatoes and bell peppers. The dish was fairly spicy, the chicken was nice, but at the end of the day, this was more a simple-minded assault of heat and acid, rather than interesting, harmonious layers of flavor. Certainly wouldn't order this again. Finally, someone else ordered the wood oven baked rigatoni, a super simple pasta dish. For what it was, it was actually pretty good, with a strong undercurrent of lemon zest opening up the flavor. But it's not something I'd come back for. (Honestly, why aren't they baking a tasty lasagna in that wood fired oven?) Not bad, but far from great. Marzano would *not* be my first choice if you've got a hankering for Italian: you can definitely find more flavorful, potent, and distinctive Italian food elsewhere. But if you're curious, I suppose my advice for Marzano would be to first lower your expectations a little, get the arancini if they're on the menu, stick to the pizzas for the main course, and if you see any dish that claims to contain some tasty variety of wild mushrooms, pretend that those will have been left out. If you do that, you should have an acceptable meal. If you really want good pasta or a plate of meat or fish, go up the block to Bellanico instead. Marzano may look beautiful and have a wonderful, cozy ambiance, but I sure wish the food was better. read more

We are not sure what is happening here. We would order Marzanos Friday night after the shutdown. But now, we are starting to get "light" portions on take out. Honestly Marzanos Did better during COVID as they were light (always) before on takeout...back to the old Marzanos I guess? I mean, can you tell me what the $15 on the burrata is paying for? The octopus is tough and way too spicy with very few potatoes and olives cut so big a bite of them overpowers anything else in the bite. The bathroom was filthy with dust everywhere. This is our first time in this restaurant thanks to the show check please. So, we made reservations the night before. The host was nice and welcoming, but the server...where should we start? Well, we sat down and the server came to our table to serve us water and WE greeted her (tall brunette) and than she said she'll be back to get our drink order. Sorry we didn't get her name because she didn't really greet us or tell us her name. Anyways, throughout our dinner she never once asked us how was the food or checked on us. She has no personality and she was just blah, no smile, no expression on her face at all. The restaurant itself is very small and cozy and the food was good and tasty. Here's a message to the owner, promote the host to a server and tell the server she needs to take a class on customer service and while she's taking the class have her host and not serve tables for a while. Dirty restaurant, sticky tables, bad service. Food was just meh, and overpriced ($15 for 3 tiny corn bread fritters, about the size of a 50-cent piece). Limited menu, and they refused to add a protein to their salads. Table was wobbly, and the top wasn't even attached to the legs. Four staffers stopped by to attempt to fix it, even after we told them never mind. One knocked over my drink, and each was an unwelcome interruption. Excellent dinner. We've come here since about 2007 and iMarzano never lets us down. Fantastic cocktails, exceptional Super Tuscan, flavorful pizza, juicy pork chop, and wonderful appetizers (fennel celery root soup and our old standby of the warm octopus/ potato salad). I am so disappointed to report a lack of service at one of my favorite neighborhood spots. Food was still good but a lively disco beat to our dinner was a HUGE distraction. When a change was requested, One of the owners argued it was for the workers and not for the customers. I was goddmacked. How do you respond to that kind of customer service? We were first timers here but will definitely be back! We started with the octopus and meatballs which were both stellar. The meatballs were tender and flavorful. The octopus was seasoned beautifully but it should have had a bit more octopus in the dish. We both had steak and it was fantastic. The smashed potatoes caused a "moment" they were so damn good. I am not a sweets person but we were on a roll. I had strawberry rhubarb crumble which was delicious and he had that the chocolate chili pot de creme which he gave a 4/5. In a word YUM! Our server was great as well, she was attentive without being intrusive and uniquely intuitive. I hate when you are a talking at a table and a server just walks up and talks over you. Still not a winner in our book. With Italian Colors stepping up its game, Desco cooking up a storm, Trabocco doing Ligurian delights and Belotti clearing everybody off the table with its amazing French-style Northern Italian cuisine, Marzano limps far, far behind. In fact, we recently ate at A16 for dinner and thought it, too, was much better than Marzano (our first A16 visit was a dismal failure when they opened the Rockridge branch). Hard to believe this is the same chef doing the polenta we found too rich in 2010. 2016 takes care of that - this was tasteless, unsalted, watery, and blah. Fritto misto's batter fell off the moment anything was touched with a fork; unsalted and tasteless. Vegetarian fettucine was bland and greasy; a shame because the pasta itself was high quality and a perfect al dente. We've been on a low salt diet for 30 yrs but even we were confounded at a kitchen letting these three dishes go out without any seasoning. Did like the spicy octopus (a lot of spicy EVOO on everything) and the Italian meatballs (of which just about everyone rocks some version of). Winner: corn arancini. A stunning tour de force. Brilliant conception, flawless execution. The one dish we'd come back for. But one little starter isn't enough to bring our wallets back. read more

This restaurant was recommended by a friend who said the pizza was like East Coast Pizza. The pizza dough was thin and delightful, the sauce delicious but the cheese is put on in cubes and because it cooks so fast in the wood fired oven, the cubes only have time to turn into cheese medallions . . . not fully melted. Not a very pleasant experience all around last night (Thursday). Got there about 10 minutes before our 7:15 reservations. The place was crowded, both inside and out, and we were basically ignored and had to stand in a line outside the door with other folks who had reservations and were not even greeted or given a quick estimate of what was going on. When we finally got seated (around 7:30) the entire experience felt very rushed with a frenetic energy that was the opposite of what I wanted for a nice meal. We felt like the restaurants goal was to get us in and out as quickly as possible. In fact, we weren't even finished with our meal when the wait person asked if we needed boxes for what we didn't finish ... even before we were asked how everything was and if we were interested in dessert. Food was good, but the experience was lacking. With the extra tables they put on both sides of the restaurant outside, it simply felt like they were trying to handle many more diners than either the staff or the kitchen could handle. read more

So, this is going to be a little painful. I have been going to Marzano for several years. I loved the Park location when it was new and loved the one on College when it was open. Until tonight, I would have given it three to four starts, but let me share my story. February 14th is Valentines Day, but it is also, and more importantly my husbands birthday. I made reservation through Open Table - lazy, but it works. We wanted an early dinner, so I made 5:15 reservations. We are between 40 & 45, so no Sr. Citizen assumptions, please. I arrived at 5:20. The hostess was on the phone and then she was helping another customer. At 5:20 with half the restaurant empty, she was telling a couple that there were no tables and they would need to come back at 6:30. I gave my name to the hostess and instead of greeting us, she told us she left a message for us and we were late. Apparently my cell was who she was talking to when I walked in. There was no Happy Valentines Day, are you here for a special occasion... nothing. In my open table reservation I said we were dining out for the hubby's birthday - no recognition. We were seated in a 2/3 rds empty dining room between a family of 4 with two kids under six (very well mannered) and a two top with another couple. We were all so close that we talked to each other through the meal. Between 5:15 and 6:45 when we left, there were 8 open tables in the back room, so plenty of room to spread everyone out for a more romantic ambiance. I don't know what has happened to the menu, but it seems to have really shrunk. Not only in terms of options, but portion size of everything. Usually we go out and share an entree, a salad and an appetizer. Everything was minute. * Arancini - $12 for three fried rice balls. .25 oz of arugula as the garnish * Beet salad - $10 - too small to share * Pork Milanese entree (phenomenal) $22 and you got two THIN pork loin pieces, 1/8 c of pureed cauliflour, and about a 1/2 cup of sauteed kale * Bruchetta - $11 for two pieces We ordered everything but the bruchetta at first. Then decided that we were still really hungry and ordered the other appetizer at the end of the meal and before dessert. So, I had told the server that it was my husbands birthday. I put it in my open table reservation. We each ordered a dessert... no candle, no happy birthday and no free dessert. I don't know if it is asking too much for that - maybe it is not really the restaurants job to give a free dessert any more. Has dining out become so hip you get nothing?? If I never had said anything or put it in my rez, I could see being denied, but we also complained about still being hungry, so the server kind of knew what was up and we were not especially happy. $97 dollar tab later... we are planning on popcorn and a movie on the couch. What I loved about Marzano: * The service here is impeccable. The waitress, host, busboy and chef were all incredibly friendly and patient with monster child's periodic temper tantrums and beverage spills. * They offer a nice wine and cocktail selection as well as hard to find Limoncello, Grappa, Armagnac. * The Cod was amazing. Absolutely fabulous. My poor husband probably only got a scrap of what he ordered because my parents and I couldn't keep our fork out of his plate. * The Hazelnut Torte is a well thought out dessert, not too sweet but just right. Bravo!!!! * The Glenpark area is a lovely location and Marzano provides lots of outdoor seating to enjoy the weather and the people watching. What would give them 4 or 5 stars: * The Pulled Mozzarella was WAAAAAY too salty, WAAAAAAY too salty. The concept of this dish is so good, you don't need to add salt....let the veggies speak, high quality olive oil and mozzarella speak for themselves! * The breadsticks are fabulous...minus the blanket of salt they are covered in. The dough is packed with herbs and spices, why would you feel the need to add all that salt? * The pizza's are good but again, too salty. * Given the performance of the Cod, I think more main dishes offerings are in order.... * Not feelin the whole soft serve ice cream with the added toppings concept. Everyone at our communal table was like: "Eh?". Summary: Good restaurant run by good people in a lovely location. Lose all the salt on everything, add some more entrees and real desserts and you have a four/five star restaurant. read more

I'm so happy I finally had an opportunity to check this place out. We stopped in on a rainy Friday evening. With no reservations they were pretty packed, but we were offered seats at the bar right in front of the brick oven. My son enjoyed watching the pizzas being made and baked and I enjoyed the warmth the oven offered. My husband was seated at the last seat at the bar. This was slightly annoying because it was right next to the busy kitchen. The aisle between the bar and the seating is tiny. I imagine this has to bother the servers too. Anyway, the food was great! We had a quick little sword fight with the long skinny bread sticks. They were good and crunchy. We had the pepperoni pizza ($14) with anchovies (extra $2) on the side and the swordfish ($22). The pizza was delicious! Wonderfully thin crust and lots of pepperoni. The pan-seared swordfish was also delish and cooked perfectly. I saw the rigatoni being baked and that looked really good too. With that out of the way, I really enjoyed a quick weekday visit to Marzano. We walked in at 5:45 or so and asked for a table without reservations... and cringed a bit (having read the reviews) as the host and servers went back and forth with "a table? No reservations? Ah, no reservations. Is there a table? For no reservations?" Considering that only one table was filled this went on a bit too long--but then we got a spot in the back and started enjoying the food. The tricolore salad was fresh and tasty, with a touch of anchovy in the dressing (although a bit too much vinegar). The quattro formaggi pizza was just great, with salty and chewy cheeses complemented by fresh sage leaves and meaty mushrooms, plus a significant dose of truffle flavoring. The lamb shoulder gnocchetti was just awesome--warm, rich, meaty, spicy, loaded with extra vegetables and well cooked (cooked, I said, cooked!) tomatoes. This is the kind of Italian comfort food I crave but rarely find, in this world of tomato-stew-in-a-breadbowl or cheesy-tomato-bread neighborhood Italian joints. The wine list was great, although the server (and the backup server) seemed to have trouble describing (or pronouncing) the selections. Service was friendly, if scattered, although one woman seemed to be in charge of the whole operation and when she moved in to help, the wrinkles were quickly smoothed out. I'll be back. read more

I have lived in the East Bay for 3 years and complained about Pizza in the East Bay for just about the same amount of time. Then last week a friend recommended Marzano, and yes finally! A great pizza in Oakland. Great crust, fresh ingredients and tasty tasty tasty from start to finish. Haven't had anything we didn't like, even the appetizers are worth a try too. I haven't been to Marzano since they reopened and our meal last night confirmed that was a good choice. I went for a Sunday dinner with my family so we were a party of 9. This review is strictly about the poor service we received. 3 glasses of wine and a cocktail took 20 minutes. A refill on our water took nearly the same time and we were perplexed why it took multiple requests to get 2 water bottles onto our to table. My first issue was that when we ordered we asked them to fire my 2 year old's pasta with butter and cheese immediately. We watched as the 4 top next to us was seated, ordered, got apps, then their main course all in the time between us getting appetizers and before my daughter's pasta. We asked the server again as my daughter became restless then asked if they had some bread the could give us. The server recommended the plain flatbread which they brought out for her (and charged us for). Between the ordering time and the time that the first plate came out, nearly 50 minutes elapsed. Still no pasta. By now, people who had been seated after we ordered had finished eating and were ordering desserts. 2 lasagnas and a pizza came out for us finally, still no plain pasta with butter and cheese for our daughter. We told them not to bring another plate of food to our table until her pasta came out. There seemed to be a break just long enough for them to make pasta, then the plate appeared, without cheese on top. Enter 15 minute delay to get a small cup of grated Parmesan. The food was good but we couldn't believe the amateur hour that was the service here. We tried to say something on the way out but there was no clear manager nor anyone directing traffic. The service lacked organization, professionalism, and any sort of regard for the people dining. We will certainly take our business to Bellanico or Paulista in the future where we always feel welcome. read more

I've read some of the comments about unfriendly service at the door and I'm happy to report that I was received with a smile and shown to my table right away. To start things off, we went with the frito misto, wood-fire roasted meatballs and roasted Mediterranean octopus salad. Frito misto is lightly breaded pieces of cauliflower, lemon, fennel, fall squash & came with a wonderful spicy aioli dipping sauce. The meatballs would be a strong opener with any meal and would probably be my go-to appy here if it weren't for the octopus salad. The Mediterranean octopus salad was just so tasty, I almost hated to have to share with the rest of the table! With cerignola olives, crushed potatoes and calabrian chili, this was easily the highlight of my meal and had just enough spice to make me break out in a little sweat. We ordered three pizzas; pepperoni for the kids in the group, spicy house sausage and the bianca. Bianca comes with prosciutto, wild arugula and mozzarella and was almost a little too much like a pizza with salad on top. Spicy sausage was my favorite pie of the night. The sausage had enough spice to offset the fennel that I really don't care for but always shows up in Italian sausage. An order of the house made pappardelle also made its way to the table and it was reported to be absolutely wonderful, although I would have avoided it due to the presence of wild mushrooms. Finished things off with their fancy soft-serve ice cream. I went with chocolate vanilla swirl with hot fudge and roasted almonds. Vanilla with caramel sauce also showed up at the table and that would definitely be my choice the next time I make it back to Marzano. And yeah, I'll definitely be back... read more

What a delicious meal! I dined here with my husband and baby a few nights ago. We sat at the community table at the front of the restaurant, and admired the way that the restaurant fits a lot of people into its small dining room without feeling cramped. Mitch started with a Scotch Sour, which was smoky and smooth; I had a Red Seal. We shared the grilled octopus appetizer. The octopus was meaty and tender, and the accompanying potatoes and grilled olives (!) were awesome. For our main course, we shared the roasted cauliflower and spicy sausage pizza. Both were well-prepared, nuanced dishes. The service was attentive and polite. We will definitely return! Note: After reading other reviews, I realize that I was here at the same time as David C. It seems like his party must not have understood that sitting at a community table means that other diners may join you. I also wanted to like this place because I recently moved to Glenview near Park Blvd. in Oakland and this is close to my house and seemed to get good reviews here on Yelp. But, last night when I stopped at Marzano's around 9:30 p.m. to share a bottle of wine with a friend (and we first asked the hostess if it was not too late) we got completely ignored by the bartender who knew from the hostess that we were there for wine only. She had 4 male customers at the bar and us (2) and the 4 males got fully "attended" to by her and the other female staff members. We, on the other hand, sat at the bar and waited... After a few minutes, my friend stepped outside to smoke (yes I wish he would quit!) and trying to be polite, I waited patiently some more... After another 10 minutes I got up and walked out. The bartender not once even glanced our way and she knew from the hostess that we were going to order a bottle of wine. I won't be back, but if you like a place with zero diversity in staff and clientele and no service whatsoever, then maybe give this place a try. Definitely not the kind of neighborhood place for me to stop into once a week for a glass of wine and a bite to eat! read more

I think of this as more of a weeknight, in the area spot. If you're coming from out of the area, you may be disappointed. I wouldn't necessarily treat this as a destination. Between Marzano and Bellancio, up the block, I prefer Bellancio. Marzano is more casual and basically it's a 'casual California pizzeria bistro'. The highlights for me are the soft serve Strauss ice cream and the cocktails. Yummy cocktails, very well made. All I did was taste my pals, and I can tell I'd enjoy. Also a pretty good wine list. The pizza, not so much. We had the calamari pizza. I thought the sauce had too much oregano and didn't set off the seafood flavors well. But, the crust, which I like to be more on the salty side, was nice and fluffy. We also split the chopped winter salad. The salad was frankly awful. Good in concept, terrible in execution, from the poorly chopped chunks of lettuce in disproportionate sizes to the carrots and other bits of veggies, to the dressing, which was too tart. Yes, I did eat half, but it could have been so much better, I just know it! Service was fine, the folks were really accommodating since we got there early for our reservation-so they gave a table right by the door, which we subsequently whined about, because our feet were cold, and they offered seats at the bar. Pass, since I hate bar seating for dinner. I know, I sound like an annoying customer. Well, I think I'm reasonable, so shut up! I wish they had wiped off our table after dinner as we prepared to enjoy our awesome soft serve, but otherwise nice. Don't like giving less than stellar reviews but tonight doesn't deserve praise. First time getting take out. We always dine in. The food was cold and the bartender even colder.
