Horrible Indian food. I took one bite of the chicken tikka masala and immediately thought they couldn't have bought a cheaper meat. Took another bite of what I thought was the pistachio cake but instead it was a sour brick that didn't even taste like pistachio at all! Low stars for a truly disappointing experience at Masala. My husband and I drove four hours for Indian food, and were so excited to arrive in Missoula with two Indian restaurants. I was expecting traditional sit-down Indian fare with curries, naan, basmati rice, chai tea, mango lassi and perhaps papadam- which is not even close to what I got. This place was an order-at-the-counter assembly line (and not like a lunch buffet) of pre-made curries that were slopped atop rice (not true basmati, may I add). I was unable to select the dish I truly wanted (Biagan Bhartha), and the side options were atrocious. The naan... definitely not cooked in a tandoori oven, and probably not even made by hand, tasted like Little Caesars' garlic sticks (not knocking LC when the craving arises, but the quality is crap). There were no Lassis, chai teas, or Taj Mahals on the drink menu. The women behind the counter were nice, but overall everyone working there seemed like a bunch of hipsters (including the cooks)... I didn't drive four hours to eat at a hipster, western adapted Indian restaurant, but that's what I got. That is what you will get. Prices are reasonable unless you plan on getting a meat dish, but you're better off saving your money and cooking at home. read more

The dog portraits on the walls! A definite coolness factor. No cafateria trays. Ordering is very easy to do. Wish you always had the cherry chutney. It's a small dining room, but I guess there's not much that can be done about that. Doesn't seem like takeout would be as good of an experience. I'll be back. read more

My husband and I love Masala. The food is so good you can't stop eating it, even when you're stuffed to the gills. However, our visit this evening will make us think twice about spending money there. We drove across town -- discussing the dishes we'd select-- excited to visit Masala in person, a special Thursday night treat to celebrate our date-iversary. We happily waited outside until there was adequate room to socially distance inside while in line. I ordered the 3 curry combo. On the list of curries, they had spicy coconut pork, butter chicken, and several vegetarian options. I requested the spicy coconut pork-- I was told that all that was left was sauce, but if I wanted the sauce I would only be charged for a vegetarian curry. Ok. How about the butter chicken? Same answer. The reason? They just got slammed with customers and they weren't prepared. Okkkk... every time I have ever been to Masala, there has always been a line of customers. Masala's popularity in Missoula is nothing new. Unfortunately, not being prepared for rushes of customers during the normal dinner hour, is also nothing new at Masala. My husband ordered next and also ordered the butter chicken. Again, the same excuse -- did he want just the sauce? Fine. We had moved over to pick our chutneys to let the next guy order. He ordered the butter chicken. Well, lo and behold, out of their warming oven, the same lady who served us pulled out a brand new pan of butter chicken, the same piled high with chicken. Not 30 seconds after us. My husband and I didn't want to make a scene but what exactly did we pay for? Some rice and sauce without meat. Now, obviously, we will survive -- first world problems here -- but we were SO disappointed. read more

After living in cities with tons of Indian food options, I was excited for another Indian food place to open in Missoula, especially after being pretty disappointed with the Curry House. Well, I finally made it in to Masala and I was immediately thrilled to see saag paneer as one of the regular menu offerings. I ordered the saag and the pork vindaloo, some naan and a beer, and found everything to be top-notch. Masala also has a really nice interior, with a record player and shelf full of vinyl that (I assume) is usable by the clientele. I'm also eating the leftovers as I type - just as good as yesterday! This place is far more than "a step up" from the Curry House, and I'm glad they're in town. read more

Quick lunch before going to the airport to go back to Seattle. Guy from Berkshire Hathaway suggested I go to Masala. Results: Delicious. Great surprise. Curries. I had the chickpea curry (garbanzo)....fantastic. Some chicken. A Serrano corn fritter just for fun. Some toppings on the curry. I am back in Seattle and wish there was a Masala in our area. Hint, hint. I don't know if these are authentic Indian flavors...but they were delicious. read more

Holy Moly people. You have got to eat here! I am obsessed with this place and have eaten here every other Friday for 2 months. Thank god my husband likes it too (and he is VERY picky) so he is happy to go along! The food is so delicious and a vegetarian's dream. I am SO sad because I am moving in a few weeks so I've been trying to eat here as much as possible before I have to leave. The Kerala Coconut Curry is to die for. My husband really likes the butter chicken. And the naan and sides, especially the Aloo Chop are so good. Missoula has needed good Indian food and I am so glad Masala is here!!! read more

The food made my mouth and tummy happy. The people made my soul happy. The curries are flavorful and the Serrano chutney brings the heat, but the real magic was the tandoori. This place is amazing! While this review is based on only one visit, I can't think of any drawbacks of this place. We discovered it by smell just walking by, and I can't wait to visit Missoula again to come back and try something else. read more

New to town, I came here excited to try the Indian food. Let me just say that disappointed is an understatement. The "butter chicken" was fatty and chewy, the saag paneer has absolutely no flavor and the chai tea had an intense perfume flavor. Also, I find it comical that this place is called Masala but they don't have any Masala on the menu. It seems clear that these are people with no experience cooking Indian food, such a shame. 2 stars because it's definitely edible but not at all authentic. read more

A little bummed out. We started eating at Masala when it first opened and were very excited; Great portions, great food, great prices. Last few times our portions were skimpy and the prices have been constantly on the rise. Not worth it. Food is still good, but expect tiny portions at higher prices. Sorry, Masala. Tried Masala yesterday for lunch. Had chicken Tiki Masala, brown rice, naan, corn fritters and some potato ball things. All tasty-no complaints-although I have no clue how authentic they were. Have purchased chicken Tiki Masala frozen from Costco and it was just as good. It was pretty obvious that we were first-timers, but rather than offering a smile and some help the staff stood stoically staring at us while we had to ask question after question. Maybe an age thing, who knows? But friendly customer service should go across generational boundaries and comes from the top down in training. I must disagree with the reviewer who praised the desserts. We purchased all but one of the desserts in the display case to sample on our drive home. Please don't waste your money. Enticing in appearance-they were all quite flavorless. A pistachio cake was pretty, but dry & heavy and tasteless. A coconut-rum laddoo was just blah cake with no rum flavor. A mango cheesecake with cashew crust had obviously never been anywhere near a fresh mango. The skim of orange jelly substance spread over the top tasted like it had been made from some sort of stale syrup. The only thing that tasted at all like its label was a fig/date/almond ball. I honestly do not think I will ever return unless a companion really wants to try it. And then I will seek my dessert elsewhere. read more

Excellent flavors and quality food made from scratch with a fair amount of locally produced ingredients. I had the coconut chickpeas, which I usually love, but tonight they were inedible as my digestive tract cannot tolerate partially uncooked legumes. Chicken Masala was delicious, as was the Naan and aloo chops. (They were soggy by the time I got home, as they were plopped into the curries and raita) $15 dollar price tag a little hard to swallow without table service. I'll try again, hopefully the kinks will be worked out. The customer service is lackluster and nonchalant...not worth the 20% tip I felt obligated to pay. I asked a server if the cherry rhubarb chutney was spicy, and was told it was not. It did have a little kick, and it was delicious. Perhaps servers should taste all of the food before serving (but not in front of customers waiting to get food, as I saw one of them doing.) The chai is pretty good, a little on the savory side. read more

I am Nepali so I am used to Indian food. I eat rice twice a day with curry my whole life so as a tourist from Boston, stopped by yesterday to eat my native food. Awful food and they did not have mango lassi which is a stable drink in Indian food. I did see ladoo as dessert which I did not try so cannot comment of that. I tried 2 curry -beef korma which tasted like Wendy's beef chili and cauliflower curry mixed with peas and carrot which was torture to eat. The samosas and aloo chop was the usual taste. Nothing special. I did like the sauce which they give 2 for each dish offered and it was spicy the way I love it so 2 thumb ups for it. Overall, for Indian looking for authentic Indian place, cook at home but for Caucasian looking for new flavor, it is not that bad. Please do not judge Indian food by this joint as one has not tried real good Indian cooking. I liked the decoration and the place itself had good street view as well as the place was clean. read more
