I wasn't sure what to expect before my visit. I was worried this is a trendy poser place. But oh my, I had the best breakfast I have tried in a long time. The place was not busy and we got seated right away. I read other reviews. I sympathize that it is difficult to have consistent and reliable waitstaff these days but I got excellent service. My waitstaff was friendly and helpful. I agree the coffee was like.... Meh. Definitely too milky. Our cappuccino is more like coffee flavored milk. But for the food, I will definitely come back and try other things. That huevo rancheros, I am not sure what is that red sauce. It is spicy but I couldn't stop even if my eye sockets were sweating. After completing a hike at Barmeyer, decided to see what was in the area for a filling and satisfying breakfast. Up the road about 10 minutes is The Den 406, with a farmhouse industrial look to it, welcoming and clean. We decided to sit on their patio, beautiful view looking out onto the mountains on all sides. We were given our waters and menus promptly by Mackenzie, a waitress who successfully memorized our entire order and requests. I ordered all sides, as I was craving something very specific (a pancake) and I'm very happy I did so! The fruit bowl (pictured) was the best I've ever had. I was given half a pomelo, two orange slices and 3 strawberries. Much better than the pathetic fruit bowls that give you minimal strawberry slices and a few blueberries. Everyone expressed their liking for their order and I plan to come again before heading home. We ordered their beignets for a birthday in my group, but they weren't my favorite. No stars off for that though since everything else was amazing. Calm vibe in the morning to early afternoon, a nice break from the buzz farther in Missoula. Mackenzie, keep it up! I had the most unique gourmet pizza I've ever eaten. my wife and son both had burgers that were cooked perfectly medium. generous serving of fry's. Staff was very inviting as we waited for a table. Service was efficient and timely. The atmosphere is very family friendly. there were quite a few families with young children (all well behaved) some playing BINGO. I didn't sit at bar but it looked inviting with a good selection of beers. May become my new go to when in Missoula. read more

We have given the Den so many chances... we live in miller creek and would love to have a reliable market and restaurant/coffee shop. But every single time we go there, we have horrible experiences with service and quality control. Their "baristas" have no clue how to make coffee, it's always lukewarm and over milky. They are observably annoyed that you are a customer at their business and will completely ignore customers, chatting with each other and scrolling on their phones. Then they just stare at you instead of demonstrating basic service skills. When we order a burrito to go, it's always cold. When we order dinner for pickup, there is ALWAYS something missing from the order. I just sent my husband to the "neighborhood market" to get butter, and they literally don't carry it. You'd think that the staff member would offer an obvious solution - grab some from their full kitchen- but of course, she just stared at him like he was crazy. We are done with the Den. They clearly need a manager to spend some time there with their staff during operating hours to teach the basics of customer service and quality control. read more

The food was really tasty but I asked for a very berry lotus and got a smoothie instead...there isn't a very berry smoothie on the menu so I'm not sure what she made. I had already corrected the lady once at the register that I wanted the lotus not the smoothie but she still didn't get it. Not sure what the problem was. She just didn't seem to know the menu. I'm not confrontational and didn't feel like making a deal about it but it wasn't what I wanted. I'd recommend you give this place a try but make sure whoever is taking your order understands what you actually want. The location is cute and the service was great, I just wish the food was better. We started off with the cowboy jalapeno popper appetizer, which was good. For the entree, I order the gnocchi with butternut squash . They were fried gnocchi , too much so. They were hard and there was no sauce, so they weren't flavorful. Husband got the prime rib, medium rare. It was cooked ok, but very chewy, not tender. When asked by the server how the meal was, I was honest. I'm not a fan of people who say their meal is good to the server then complain online. So, I told her what I'm telling you all here. Had dinner on "Pizza night". Visiting son in Missoula and that was our only night available but I sure would like to try their main menu items. Setting is fabulous with great outside deck with "big sky" views. Server was friendly and efficient. Arrived a little after 11 and must have came after a rush, lots of tables needing clearing but not a lot of people sitting. There were a few tables open. Waited and waited to for the host which came later and told to pick any table. Might want to have a sign letting people know that, if it's their policy. We're given breakfast menus realizing they don't serve lunch on the weekend, which was a bummer. There appeared to be one waiter helping everyone and was in no hurry. We were each given a small glass of water to never be filled again. We had the bacon sandwiches and breakfast burrito. Sandwich was okay, half of the burrito was delicious the other half had only egg and a few bits of bacon, so it wasn't as good. Plus it was pretty small for the price. We got checked on one more time about 3/4 of the way through with our food to see if it was good. I'm guessing it was an off day or recovering from a rush. There were very few people in the place. Hot day; hardly any ice in the drinks. A big brown spider tried to lick my plate and I took it as a sign that it was time to go. For outside dining, consider spraying for pests. That guy was no joke-- a complete turn off. Waiting so long for a simple lunch was a very poor first impression and didn't set the stage for good vibes going forward. Enjoyed a burger, pizza and cider on the outdoor patio. The location is beautiful and so is the restaurant itself. The staff was incredibly attentive and kind. The ingredients and meat are locally sourced and a lot of attention goes into the new beverages they carry. The housemade ranch is to die for and the atmosphere is just excellent. They also have a market where you can purchase bakery items and wine amongst other things. Highly recommend dining here bc you're going to want to make this a frequent location to bring your friends and family! Can't wait to visit again! read more

Also, the servers need to have better wine openers both times that we've been there recently the corks are breaking in the bottles as they're trying to get them out. I took a friend there to celebrate her birthday. She ordered a salad. It looked fine but not that great. I asked for a burger with no seasoning and not cooked in fat. It took them one and a half hour to figure out how to make that and my friend was still waiting for her salad. In the end, I got a child's burger that was swimming in whatever fat they use. When I asked the waitress why all that fat was there, she said: "it's not fat, it's oil"!!! That poor mini-burger looked miserable on its little child's plate but still cost me $15. The Den has become one of our routine outings. The food is good, and the servers go the extra mile. Beer is cold and they have an impressive selection. Must have the pizza - tasty, and they serve it on an elevated stand so it doesn't go soggy. We had a family gathering there which consisted of multiple families, long story short the food was good and our waitress was kind and mostly prompt on getting us orders however the men drinking the beer had to go to the bar multiple times to get refills themselves, but again she seemed to do her job just fine. The experience we had there quickly went from probably a 4.5 review to me giving a 1 star review happened when as we were still sitting there after my husband paid the bill which was expensive and left her a 10% tip a friend of hers that was at the bar as a customer came into the room where we were seated and began to yell at us and tell us how ashamed we should be for only leaving her friend a 10% tip and if we did not give her more then she would be forced to pay her what she felt she deserved. Mind you, this woman had no idea whether or not we had left this waitress more on the tables. So instead of me continuing my rant, all I can advise is if you want to be insulted at a place that you just spent hundreds of dollars at because your waitress might have been a little sad because she didn't get paid what she thought she should have then go on ahead and eat at this place but I highly recommend not. Highly recommend! Incredible food and service with wonderful views. Also has the most adorable and well stocked mini market attached where you can find the famous Market on Front breakfast burritos with delicious coffee, the best selection of Montana made Wilcoxson's ice cream, spectacular wine among many other essentials. I also love that the meat used in house comes from locally owned Oxbow Cattle Company which is within miles of The Den and Market. All around a very well operated joint. I had one of the best breakfast burritos I've ever had at this place today. It was amazing. $9 for a breakfast burrito seems kinda high, but this isn't a low quality gas station burrito and it's enough to fill you up. It's THE burrito you want. Everyone I've met at this location is super nice and super cool. I'll be getting a burrito here every Wednesday morning from now on. Service is good. Pastry in the display case is very cold and chewy. Coffee Americano is good but decaf seems not to be in the offering. I liked their pizza and also enjoy the breakfast veggie burrito, although I wish they would chop the long stems off the spinach. I hate it when I take a bite and the entire piece of spinach gets pulled out. The groceries offered for sale exceed what a convenience store carries. The ice cream crystalizes in the big containers before empty. This facility is a brand new building and is beautifully designed. The bar area is great and outdoor seating is available.
