I was actually quite impressed with the Sunday buffet here on offer. Though the dishes were sometimes rather salty, most of the meals were quite tasty and balanced. The saag paneer was solid, the pakoras were amazing, and the goat (curry? I forget what sauce was used) tasted particularly tender. On the other side of the buffet were Nepalese items, including some decent dumplings (momos), something like stir-fry lo mein (this one could skip), and some spicy vegetarian dish, details of which I forgot. Guys, guys! Listen up! This is the best Indian food I've had in the Boston area! Yup! We came in on a Saturday night, and the $3 house margs got us feeling just right. It's obviously not the most authentic thing to drink, but I'm not going to judge. Sometimes some cheap citrusy alcohol is just what you need to cut the spice of saucy Indian food. Ordered the lamb vindaloo (with spice between medium and hot) and the palak paneer (hot). The spice levels were on point (at times my non-Indian face calls for milder versions than I'd prefer) and the portions large (leftovers were very much enjoyed the following day). The veggie samosas had a great texture and flavor, and paired great with the sauces on the table. The prices are reasonable, and even more so if you buy the Yelp deal beforehand ($15 for $20) or use the 10% check-in offer! As an extra treat, complimentary bites of carrot cake were brought out at the end of dinner. A very tasty finishing touch. I will surely be back to savor more of your flavors, Masala! read more

This has easily become my go to spot for Indian food! Have tried so many things on the menu, and I like it all! It's so interesting - I've eaten masala so much, but I've never actually dined in. The take out is so convenient! My favorites are the dal makhani and the paneer tikka masala. My husband loves the chicken korma. For those of you new to Indian food - paneer is a type of cheese and dal is lentils. I recommend you order the puri bread if you're interested in trying something other than naan. It's my favorite. It's lightly fried bread and you won't regret getting it. We always get the veggie samosas when we eat here - can never go wrong with those. Most recently we ordered the Kheer for dessert. It was so yummy! Kheer is a sweetened rice dish and it's one of my favorites desserts. Overall, will definitely return and I think you'll enjoy your meal here! read more

There were two great things to happen to Teele Square in the past week. The first was me moving there. The second is Masala opening its doors. I have found myself in here on 3 occasions within my first week living in the area. It could be the fact that I feel like a little kid on his first day of elementary school who doesn't really know anybody so he looks for someone in a similar position to him. Or it could just be that I have a newfound appreciation for Indian food and this awesome restaurant just happens to be only a few short steps from my place. If you have never tried Indian food before and are considering it this is a great way to experience it. Check out their weekday lunch buffet for $8 or $11 on the weekend. Either way it is a great deal and you get to sample the best of both Indian and Nepali cuisine. Plates they put out include a variety of appetizers, chicken, rice, sauces, desert and the buffet includes many vegetarian options as well. The buffet also comes with your choice of naan. Furthermore if you are still not considering giving Indian food a try, you are an idiot and are making a terrible decision. A little FYI. I have also tried the Masala Byriani which was filled with chicken, shrimp, and lamb complimented by a ton of tasty Indian spices as well. The chicken jalfrazi was a perfect choice as well with a nice blend of chicken, vegetables, and spices. The mango lassie was thick but not too thick, creamy but not too creamy, and sweet but not too sweet just as it should be. Oh and folks to top it off the bartender serves up a sour Masala margarita for $3. While not the best margarita I have had, it is still $3. I repeat $3 for a margarita. The spacious place is lit very bright and the front windows open up. This will definitely be in high demand for some cool fall nights. The servers are all extremely friendly and began calling me by name by my third time being in there. The manager made several recommendations to me for future visits and even said that many of the entrees could be made into an appetizer portion for about 1/2 price if I wanted to sample several different things. I am so happy I am living right next to this place. If anyone want to join me for a meal here I will have zero hesitation to say YES! This place is new and I love the fact that they are asking people how they are doing and how they can improve. I cant wait to see this place grow and fill up with tons of people. DISAPPOINTING CUSTOMER SERVICE!! We were driving from New Hampshire to Jersey and we happened to find this place in yelp when searching for some Indian food. We called them and checked for the timings before we decided to drive to this place , we were told the kitchen closes at 10pm and we arrived at 9:35 pm and to our surprise they tell us that the dine in is closed and only take out is available. We went out of our way and drove into this busy downtown on a Saturday night and were really not happy with this kind of customer service at this place. If you don't accept dine in's 90 mins before closing time you should let people know clearly. read more

This is one of my most favorite Napali/Indian restaurants in the USA. Period! Food is cooked to perfection. For people less tolerant to hot spices, this place has lots of options in lunch buffet and dinner. Many vegetarian options too. I've tried both lunch and dinner. Lunch buffet quality is very high and definitely worth the hike from David square T station at a very reasonable price. Included in lunch buffet are fresh-baked naans (they only started to make it for you after you are seated!) and hot milk tea. Contrary to many Indian buffet, the seasoning is less sweet and salty. Interior decor is cozy with some upscale ceiling trimming and paintings. Light new age background music. Good place for lunch date for sure. read more

I met up with a friend from Tufts for dinner on a Friday night and you really can't go wrong with good ol' Indian/Nepali food at Masala. The dimly lit atmosphere is great for catching up with a friend or a date. We were provided complimentary Chai tea and two large pieces of crispy baked chips with three sauces to start off the meal. That was super pleasant and delicious. For our appetizer, my friend and I ordered chicken momos to share. The chicken momos were really good- perfectly wrapped with great spices and so tasty with the sauces and soup provided. We were really pleased that the plate came with at least 10 dumplings. It was my first time having them and I reckon they're not half bad. My friend ordered the Chicken Jalfrezi and I had the Lamb Malabar, which both come with rice. She asked for mild and I asked for medium. Didn't really get a kick at all, so next time I'll probably ask for spicier. We ordered garlic naan on the side to share as well and it was AMAZING. Great flavor and texture. If we weren't so full, we would have gotten our own portions of naan. Hands down the best thing we ate. Been going here often to thank them for building the hotel in The Teele Square Pit. My typical order is bread basket, malai kofta, navratan korma, palak paneer, lamb rogan josh. I haven't had anything bad, frankly. This place is a neighborhood gem. The reason I'm reviewing: their thukpa is my new favorite chicken soup. It's collagen-y and thick, a little spicy, with tandoori chicken pieces in it. So good. Delectable Indian food. Masala plays seemingly authentic Indian music and has a lunch buffet. We visited for dinner, and I ordered the seafood masala with garlic naan. The seafood tasted fresh and the sauce was tasty. The naan was as good as any I have had, but it could have used more herbs and garlic to be truly delicious. The only ding against this restaurant in my mind is my medium spice-level masala was not very spicy even though the waiter assured me it would be. Won a giveaway on IG to this restaurant and I was extremely delighted. Amazing service. We went on a Sunday night so we had the place to ourselves for most of our meal. For drinks we got two mango lassi. They were bomb and already had me full before our plates arrived. We started off with the Pakoras and Samosas. I preferred the Pakoras. Can't remember the name of the sauces we got but the brown one was perfect for the pakoras. I had the Chicken Botian, which was delicious. My friend had the Lamb Kebab. They were both served with rice and naan. We ended of with desert with the Ras Malai. Although it's cheese if she wouldn't have told me I would've never known. I recommend. I went here for a lunch with a couple of my professors and friends near the end of graduation. We all got the buffet option, which was super tight. I like all-you-can-eat. I guess I couldn't do it justice because my professors were there so I didn't want to pig out. Also Indian food is heartburn central for me, and this place was not an exception. Still though, that points to shortcomings of my digestion rather than of the restaurant. The chicken tikka masala was really good, as well as potato pancakes that are made fresh in the little stand next to the buffet station (no extra cost). I highly recommend getting those. Really enjoyed this one and am even more happy that they were quick to fix what I thought was a freally big mix up. The staff is really friendly and make for a nice dining experience. Bought the $20 for $25 and a few days later I received an email from Yelp asking how my experience was after using my Deal. Only problem was I hadn't used it yet. In a mild panic attack I emailed Yelp and explained the situation. Within minutes I called Masala and all they said was that it was probably an error when inputting the codes (I never even considered that, I just thought I was going to get screwed out of my 20 bones) and to come in with my voucher when I was ready. That was really easy. Vegetable Samosas were a little dry. The pastry dough was pretty thick and the corners were too hard to eat. Aloo Ghobi was really good. I'm used to having more sauce in mine and this was just cauliflower and potatoes with spice sprinkled on top. Bengan Bharta was very flavorful. Usually I like that I can taste the eggplant and here I mostly tasted onions. Not bad, but I did miss the eggplant. Aloo Dam & Poori is really fun dish. Nepali style potatoes in Nepali spices. I have no idea what they are, but the dish tasted wonderful. Poori is a Nepali bread that's fluffly and has a subtle sweetness to it and very light. Garlic Naan: HUGE. Fresh. And yummy! The onion chutney and mint chutney were perfect! I've gone to so many Indian restaurants that water down their sauces, but these were very flavorful and spicy! read more

What an interesting mix of Nepalese and Indian food! We had the momo's app, which is similar to chinese dumplings and came with a nice cup of soup. We went Indian for dinner and got the chicken marsala and lamb saag - both creamy and melt-in-your-mouth delicious with rice. We were the only ones there (ok so we had dinner at 5:30, sue me, I'm old), but the restaurant seemed very nice and, on warmer days, they open the windows wide for some semi-al-fresco dining! Masala is a great deal with a coupon from restaurant.com or groupon, and still a good place for dinner even without the coupon. I need to come back and try the Nepalese noodles. I really wanted to have this place be my go-to for takeout before going out on Saturday night. Indian food is great, and the first time I ordered food from here, I totally had a 5 star experience. The lamb vindaloo and chicken tikka masala were both really, really good. If you are a tikki masala fan, this is the place for you. The sauce and the garlic naan combination is a match made in heaven, you guys. Then I started taking gambles. The fish tikka (salmon) was overly charred and too fishy for my taste. The shrimp jalfrzi also just didn't do it for me. The buffet is consistently great quality and refreshed well, at a good price. We then came recently for an evening meal for the first time which was even better. Beyond the food, the excellent service stands out, always kind and attentive. Not easy to find. Review for weekday dinner. Place was half full and we got to sit by the open windows. My go-to is always the chicken tikka masala because it's so good and I haven't been able to recreate it. Chicken is not dry and is flavorful. The dish comes with basmati rice and I ordered garlic naan. Loaded with garlic and some parts were crispy, yum! Portion looks small, but I always have leftovers to bring home. Servers were friendly and attentive. I've also stopped by for lunch buffet and it's a good deal. Cheap margaritas too! In don't live here in town but every time I'm here I seek this place out because the food is great. After a long stressful week it was a Friday and tonight I was so looking forward to Indian food (my favorite cuisine) because I haven't treated myself in quite a while and I truly love the peaceful ambiance and music. It was a bit late at 10pm when I came in, but as a former server myself I saw they don't close till 11 so I figured I wasn't being rude by coming in at least an hour before they closed. At first everything was great, but it boggled my mind that by 10:10 it was like they were basically telling me get out as every employee in the place started sliding all the chairs to some side room as they setup some buffet for the following day. They apologized for the crazy amount of noise a few times yet it continued. My wine sat empty as they all hurried along to setup for the following day. One young man was very nice and apologized multiple times but it continued until one point at the banging of the dishes I finally had to politely ask them to calm it down. They did a little but I still felt like I was in a military kitchen as the banging of dishes continued. Then as I'm still eating they ask to take my plates away ... I advised I wasn't done yet so then they brought my check for me even though I was still eating. I was already pretty annoyed by my experience, Then someone literally starts mopping the floor around me. Really?!?!?!? I'm surprised they didn't start flipping the chairs up on the surrounding tables by that point. I decided to give up on finishing because by that point I couldn't even enjoy it. The nice young man did bring my check back with my card to advise they had given me 10% off but by that point I was all set. I'll say the food was great but it was anything but an enjoyable meal. I may come back at some point but it really was a bit obnoxious like a circus was going on in the background and for the record I leave far more positive than negative reviews... but sometimes they're just warranted. read more

Meh... We were disappointed in the quality of the food. I've traveled far and wide and the food here didn't scream to me come back. We had the vindaloo, saag, nan and some appetizers. The prices are standard to other similar establishments and the staff are extremely nice. It wasn't busy so the service was quick and the food hot. Hot food is important on a cool night. The wine was nothing to rave about either but to this date, I've found most restaurants similar to here do not cater to the palette of fine wine drinks. Too bad. I might try again as they offer yelp deals quite often and it's in my local area. Hopefully they're paying attention to customers and making necessary adjustment. Amazing place. My favorite restaurant in boston, hands down. Call it consumerism, but to be really honest, my favorite thing that this restaurant offers is the buffet option during lunch. On weekdays you just pay $8.95 for an elaborate buffet, generally including shrimp, chicken tandoori, chicken tikka masala, palak paneer, Nepali style chicken curry, a tofu dish, various other veggie dishes, gulab jamun for dessert and most importantly (since I'm from Nepal) unlimited Momos!!!!!!! The price for the buffet is a tad higher (11.95) on the weekends, but they also upgrade the regular buffet by offering calamari or salmon dishes. Either way, the buffet experience leaves you wanting nothing else than a bed to lie down on and to let the food coma take over. And wait, one last thing. NEVER AGAIN GOING HERE!!!!! We wanted to try yet another Indian restaurant in the Somerville area and since their menu looked large and interesting and their prices pretty reasonable for Boston takeout, we settled on this place. We did a phone order simply because we had some questions about whether all the lamb dishes were cooked with the same tender meat (due to noticing that only a few items on the menu actually specify that they had tender lamb), and were told that both the Lamb Curry and the Lamb Malabar were not as soft as say, the Tikka Masala so of course, we made a quick decision to play it safe and simply go with the Tikka. Our order included the Vegetable Samosas for $4.95, Aloo Paratha for $4.45, and Lamb Tikka Masala for $18... Mind you, the only reason for selecting this entree was for its so-called tenderness of the lamb. However, boy, were we surprised when we took our very first bite of the meat, to then discover that it was in fact tough and chewy. I really could not eat more than 3 different pieces before giving up on dinner, and although my spouse did finish his portion of the dish, he too said that it was pretty awful and not at all what he was expecting... Especially, after speaking with the restaurant directly to ask which lamb might be softer. Yes, the Vegetable Samosas were decent and the Aloo Paratha barely acceptable thanks to its doughy texture and small amount of potato filling, but it all came down to the lamb being so darn tough!!! We cannot even imagine what the other dishes are like if ours was supposed to be tender and many of them not so much.In any case, we won't be going back and just want to warn Yelpers to look elsewhere for good Indian cuisine.
