why close the sauna and pool area 2 hours before closing T_T like what .... i can see 30 mins or even 1 hour but 2 whole hours....

Summer hours were stupidly short being from 9-5 on weekends, 7-7 weekdays. I work from 8-5 most weekdays and every Saturday, get home by 5:40, rest for 20 minutes and have a single hour excluding walk time to the gym. At least summer is over, and I'm not working anywhere as much. This week has been extremely frustrating. Wednesday, the pool was supposed to be open. I walk in and it's closed. I asked if the pool would be open the day after, and they said yeah. I go Thursday, and the pool is closed for filming. Friday, they're open from 9-5 as stated in their new hours. I walk over and they're closed for Employee training. Each of those days btw, I had a pre workout in my system, so the feeling of a thousand needles prickling away at me, along with the frustration of having the middle finger raised in my face.. These occurrences aren't announced. Sometimes they are over Instagram, but only through stories not through legitimate posts. Keep in mind, these aren't the only times instances like this have happened. I've gone here for 4 years, and there have been so many inconsistencies as such. The gym itself has plenty of equipment, it's maintained to a degree. I've come here for the last 4 years cuz it's paid by tuition and the most convenient for me, but damn. Very spacious, plenty of equipment. Despite this, the gym tends to fill up pretty regularly. Because It is so spacious, it feels as though the space isn't designed in best possible way, as there could be more equipment spread around, rather than concentrated in specific areas. The gym itself is very nice. The hours however, are always inconsistent. They only post their schedule updates on Instagram, which is something I rarely open. There were many times that I arrived at the gym doors only to be met with locked doors despite its hours stating they would be open. Truly frustrating and makes it difficult to plan a proper schedule. Also, it's summer, so they should be open late, but instead, they decided to close early everyday. With the tuition increase, you'd think they could afford to keep this open until at least 8 PM, but I guess not. read more

Easily one of the worst student gyms ever. They spent millions of dollars to construct a gym that makes absolutely no sense. The gym looks huge from outside but 90% of the space is taken up by basketball courts with endless ceilings, the pool that's closed for 80% of the time, and a rock wall. I'm sorry but I'm coming here to work out as are most of the people here. They have maybe one of each machine that people actually want to use, and a bunch of multiples of machines that nobody uses. Let's not forget about the fact that half of the gym seems to be a men only section. And you will never find an empty bench. And kids will spend daysssss on a machine just sitting on their phones. I am a student at SFSU, and this gym opened up my first semester! The free weight area is not big, but I am able to get everything I need to done! They do have platforms which are great, however you have to sign up for a 30 min time slot, which can lead to a long wait time or a rushed exercise! There is also a pool and rock climbing! I've read most of the reviews. And I'm so upset that someone have no gratitude for this gym! First I'm an alumni. Mashouf was my favorite place to go while on campus. It's a brand new building, it has two pools, jacuzzi, sauna, two floors. My favorite thing to do in the gym was swimming in the pools at dawn, then have a drink (plastic) in the jacuzzi while enjoying the sunset. Sometimes I would go to the studio on the second floor to do my work out. It's kind of like a private room. And across the building, it's the golf course. When it's sunset, the sunlight come through the glass window or wall; when you are tired, you look at the green grass at the golf course to get relaxed! It's the best gym center ever! read more

I would give it a 3.5 if I could but 3.0 is more fitting than a 4.0 rating. The gym is clean and aesthetically good looking. However, there are major things that need to be addressed to make it a 5-star gym. 1. The gym needs more and better weightlifting equipment: As someone who is fairly experienced, I as well as many people realize that some of this gym's equipment feels cheap. To mention a few: the leg curl machine, the lat pull-down machine (not the plate loaded one), and the machine row are some to mention a few. There also feels like there's a scarcity of plates, it doesn't matter the weight, sometimes it feels almost impossible to find enough plates during regular hours. And lastly in regards to equipment, there are not enough back exercise options. Many gyms have a multitude of seated cable row variations and pull downs and thus gym has only one cable lat pull-down and that's it. Smaller gyms even have at least three of those and the fact that this is a bigger gym with less quality is absurd. It is also absurd that there is equipment, designed for Olympic weightlifting, with the right plates and platforms to do so and you aren't allowed to use it as intended. No Olympic weightlifter is capable of gently drop the bar to the platform, especially the really strong people who lift plenty weight, so the fact that you can't drop the weight demonstrates that this gym's equipment manager doesn't know what's best or necessary from an actual weightlifters perspective. 2. They need to take action faster: Some broken machines take weeks to get fixed. 3. There are enough combat sports enthusiasts in this gym and limiting the one and only heavy bag to people with personal trainers seem unfair as everyone pays the same for that equipment and limiting the use of it is unjust. Implementation of a room with a couple heavy bags would be beneficial for many as it is a good way to learn self defense, do cardio, and build connections among those who are into combat sports. I never yelp but this gym is garbage. Their equipment is cheap and don't have basic equipment like a t-bar row, seated row, the bench is crap. One time i was told i couldn't bench without putting clips. Generally you shouldn't put clips on if you're working out by yourself so you can slide the plates off if you struggle to lift them. Pretty disappointed my tuition goes to this garabgeness. Aesthetically is looks nice but if you're serious about working out I wouldn't go here. Most weights are worn out smh. read more

I have been going to this student gym for about 2 years now and it has easily been the worst gym I have ever been to. Almost every single water fountain in this building has been broken for a few months if not having a red filter status. Nothing gets fixed, there are currently 3 machines to my knowledge (2 cable machines and 1 hamstring extension machine) that are broken with no shot of getting fixed soon. I say that because one of the cable machines has been broken since the beginning of the semester. The beginning of the semester was almost 3 months ago... The staff is fine, they are nice and seem to be doing there job well. I just can't believe the school constructed this billion dollar building a few years ago and now just refuse to fund any maintenance. In my opinion there are also way too many cardio machines that are rarely used and are taking space up where more machines could be put. All round I understand it is a school gym but as students we are paying for it out of our tuition every semester and the people running it could not care less. read more

All flash and no substance. The gym itself is very nice and the equipment is good but it's near impossible to get what you want. Instead of having massive areas of nothing, more free weights or machines would be much appreciated. The staff are also incredibly rude and don't seem to value the experience of the individual at all. The place is clean! - 1/5 for the lazy staff - 1/5 for using court + 1/5 group X + 1/5 climbing wall + 1/5 sauna Sometimes you can tell the student staff doesn't care. So advise for the people who manage the students here. There should be a head manager that monitors the workers on their body language and what they say to the people who "borrow" equipment or use it. I lost my items one time and one of the girls at the front desk rolled her eyes and me and told me "well I can't tell you for sure, I would have to check" and gave me this snotty tone of "I really don't care to look for your lost items." One of the workers at the climbing wall was too lazy to show me how to use the strength board and told me to look at the diagram. How can I copy the diagram if I have no mirror? He said he could not see my posture but he is way taller than me. The sauna area the workers have an issue opening the door and letting all the heat out to tell someone to get out if they aren't in proper attire. Why not STEP IN completely to NOT let the heat out? Why is the badminton court only once a week? I don't understand how in the recreational court only basket ball can be played there. Why can't we set up a badminton net? It is not FAIR. Basketball or volleyball can set up. If someone was playing badminton with no net and then someone comes in with a basket ball I have to leave. Suggestion: Put in open reservation time to let people reserve the court. I overall like this place because it is clean, and has decent equipment, group X classes, climbing wall, and sauna. What I do not like is the lazy staff. So whoever works here please, please, keep your staff in check with how they represent the school and the center. It is unprofessional and rude to be lazy to help the students or people that come exercise here. I am speaking in a sense that THE PUBLIC does not appreciate your staffs personal comments on how well they do not want to perform or service you. Hello. You work here!!! It's your job to help me pull out rental equipment or guide me to use equipment!! Is it asking much to have a head manager monitor the behavior of the workers? Extremely poor customer service. It's my first semester at SFSU and I thought it would be nice if my bf came with me and worked out while I was in class then checked out the campus after, since he was planning on attending in spring. I called the wellness center and the lady on the phone said it was ok to buy a guest pass then leave. She even double checked.. When we got there, supervisor Percilla or Joselyn I don't remember who I spoke with, said there was absolutely no way they can allow that even though I told them our situation. They were not able to refund my money either. As a student who commutes and also pays a substantial amount to attend this school I am completely turned off by this experience. If staff is unreliable and they can't do something as simple as refunding, why continue to attend? read more

Only good thing is my tuition is paying for my "membership". They tell you to swipe like they're policing you, but don't say hi or thank you. I was looking forward to this gym as it re-opened today and I am also a student that's brand new to the campus. The aesthetics are the building is nice. But I was left kinda sad and disappointed. I can tell the person who designed this building never actually worked out before. Too many of these unnecessary fancy cardio machines and way too few weight training machines, that's why the weight training area is so crowded. There are also those random cable machines at like every random spot or corner which doesn't make sense and kinda looks awkward. I would rather go to the nearby Planet Fitness instead for weight training. If your goal is to bodybuild then I would suggest not go to this gym and go to either City Sports, the Stonestown YMCA or Planet Fitness. read more

I am UPSET. I am an alumnus and wanted to purchase the semester membership. Drove all the way from Richmond to be told "Our membership person has already left. But you can still purchase the one-day pass" Said one female clerk by the computer. Seriously? Why would I want to spend an additional $10 for some nonsense one-day pass if I am purchasing a semester pass? Do these folks have any training at all? Where is the sign or statement on your website that says you must arrive before a certain time before the "membership person" goes home. Could I pay the $10 and go work out? As an alumnae, we've been offered some money to use as credit for the gym! I wish they notified alumnae, but I found out from friends who had recently graduated. It's a pretty nice facility! I'm not a gym goer, but I'm trying to get healthy and stronger for my profession and just overall health, so being able to start somewhere is nice. Its cool that they offer classes. So far I've only used the machines which I like. It does get crowded. I've only gone between 2-5 so Im not sure how it is at other times. There seems to be enough machines for everyone tho because so far I haven't had to wait that long to use something even if it wasn't my first choice to use it. It's great that they're offering students who graduated (I read somewhere on year from the years 2010-2015) money to use the facility! I'm looking forward to trying out the pool and some of the classes. I also think it's cool SFSU offers outdoor activities as well. I wish they had done those while I was going to school there!! read more

HORRIBLE STAF!!!!!! judging from just the gyms equipment, it isn't a good gym. But that's not the problem. The problem is the staff. I've taken numerous selfies and filmed many of my workouts for over a year and a half there until one day two male workers stopped me and told me I was going against their handbook rules. so I looked up the rules and they were lying. I talked with their boss and found out that I was right, I was allowed to do as I pleased. I thought the issue was resolved then but no... the literal next week I decide to go to the downstairs area and take a selfie away from most of the people in the gym. From across the entire gym, Chris the supervisor watched me take selfies and came up to me and instantly told me that I needed to leave the premise because I was "filming others". I very calmly responded "are you serious? I'm just taking a selfie??" he then proceeds to tell me that I am being kicked out and that he will suspend my membership. I began to raise my voice because he continued to tell me I had to leave the premise, so he called the literal SFPD on me, not even the university police, but the real police. I then left after the cops told me he had the authority to kick me out. His boss and I zoomed about the situation. he told me that I was right in this situation again, I was allowed to take a selfie in the gym. A week later, Chris was given a reward for "de-escalating a situation", more like caused a situation and then called the cops. THIS GYM IS AN ACTUAL JOKE!!!!! THEY DONT TEACH THEIR SUPERVISORS THEIR RULES AND THEN REWARD THEM FOR HARASSING OTHER STUDENTS!!! read more

The workers do not even do the bare minimum for their jobs. The workers at the desk on the gym floor are always on their phones instead of putting out new towels on the racks. How are we supposed to uphold our common courtesy of cleaning before and after use of the equipment when they can't even uphold their duties ? My friends and I went to the gym today and the worker at the desk on the second floor had her back turned away from us and was on her phone. We spent 10 minutes trying to check each rack in the gym for new towels until we saw some at the desk. My friend approached the worker to ask if those towels were new and without even a mere glance or formal acknowledgment, she succinctly said "yup". She offered no apologies or explanation as to why they did not put the towels out on the racks around the gym. They are very rude and want to get out as soon as possible even though they do nothing all day (not even the bare minimum required). As it gets closer to closing time they bombard you with reminders in successively shorter intervals (i.e. a reminder every 10 minutes, 5 minutes, 3 minutes). One worker over the intercom told everyone to "stop working out" and that we had 5 minutes to just "go home". They get paid as they sit around and do nothing. The lack of effort and disrespect from the workers is appalling. At least do the bare minimum and provide new towels on the racks so we can do our part and clean them. read more

A brand new gym that's paid for through your student fees. My favorite new ish addition is that Netflix, Spotify, and Hulu are available on most machines. Super useful so you don't have to watch on a smaller phone screen! As for crowding, it does get busy around 1 - 4 and seems to thin out around 5. My only gripe is that there aren't enough strength machines. There's a lot of free space to add more machines, and I'm guessing (hopefully) that they add more. Overall, much better (and a lot cleaner!) than your 24 hour fitness. read more

You'd think with the amount they charge per semester to almost all students of SFSU, they'd have enough money to replace old and worn down equipment. Some machines have been broken for half a year and are still not fixed. Yoga mats are dusty and have lost all traction. Dumbbells are dulled and rusting. The rack is usually missing half of them even when I go in the morning (around 9am). Hate that student membership is not year round and one has to purchase a summer membership. I only come here to get my money's worth as it is part of my tuition fee. read more

Absolutely horrible place. 1. The pool is open only until 6 p.m. in summer, despite the rest of the gym being open until 9 p.m. This is intensely disrespectful of all staff on the SFSU campus, who work until 5 p.m., often in offices across the campus from the Mashouf Wellness Center. By the time one leaves one's office, gets to the Center, changes, etc., it's simply impossible to get in a swim. So much for caring about the campus community. 2. Tried to reach the director and associate director of the Center by phone, to discuss with them the pool hours. They weren't there and, worse, they have no voice mail: impossible to leave a message for them. Another bad sign! 3. Also awful: you have to pay by credit card, and online. Given that no site is secure (please don't tell me the one for the Center is -- we know better), it's a terrible system, and another reflection of the lack of caring about patrons of the Center. 4. Ate three times at the snack bar there (Bites, or some name akin to it), and each time, got food poisoning. I kept trying it, thinking it would improve on that score, because I'd let them know about the problem -- to no avail. That food bar needs to be under different management, by someone who has even basic understanding about proper hygiene. Wanted to like the Center, but they've utterly lost me. read more

the lifeguard, Mirsa, was amazing but i heard people be having sex in the sauna so watch out, unless you wanna meet me in the sauna, Mirsa . The Mashouf Wellness Center is arguably one of the best places here at SFSU. The basketball courts are amazing and there are almost always enough people to play full games. The Pool/sauna/hot tub is iconic and is an amazing thing to come visit. There are a lot of treadmills and machines and the group classes are so fun! Julian at the front desk was so helpful and kind and really is one of the best employees there! All around MWC is a great place and I'm so happy I utilize it! read more
