The pasta was was great at Mass street . I was k. Lawrence to visit my son as he attends KU. He suggested a meal at Mass street . The bread was divine! Well made by a local bakery and tasty. My son had the fish and chips and it was very tasty, fried to perfection and came with a generous side of fries. I had the pasta crawfish pasta and couldn't get enough . The crawfish was well made and the sauce put the flavor over the top. The service was attentive as we finished our meals. Next time I'm in Lawrence I will be back for seconds! read more

We chatted and looked down and it was 7:45 and still hadn't gotten our food. Around 8:15 we flagged down the waiter and he said he was waiting for us to finish our bread before putting our order in. Like I get the thought process but why would we come to have dinner and order it if we didn't want our food? We had a time constraint so for dinner we had a bottle and a half of wine and bread. I missed my food I didn't get the rest of the night. The restaurant ambiance was great as always. But we had at least 5 groups around us come in, eat and leave by the time we hadn't even gotten the food we never got. Just really disappointed. read more

We went to Mass Street Fish House for the first time the other night and had an enjoyable meal. First off, our server was EXCELLENT. Really personable and on top of everything. Major appreciation for her (wish we remembered her name!). My wife has non-standard food allergies (cilantro, high fructose corn syrup) and she was great at sorting out ingredients in the bread and other items for us so she could eat without concern. We had an assortment of fresh oysters and they were superb. Don't know how Mass Street gets their oysters but wish we could find more freshness like this in the midwest. Had the tinned razor clams as another starter and they were FANTASTIC. Can't wait to go back and get them again. For our mains we had the pan roasted salmon and the trout. The trout was served with hummus and a pork butter (?). The trout was great. The bed of hummus and pork butter not exactly to our liking. Nice atmosphere and excellent wait staff but we'll stick to happy hour small plates and oyster bar from now on. Soup, appetizers, and small plates were good and prices were on-point. Seared scallop entree, however, is to be avoided at all costs. It was $38 for 3 1/2 medium-sized scallops that were completely overwhelmed by a spicy green sauce and hidden underneath 3/4 cup of cucumber garnish. This is always a great dinner choice when I'm in Lawrence. This was my second visit and it was delicious. The space is decent sized. The lighting inside is nice. They also have a good sized patio. Service has always been excellent. I started with a seasonal cocktail. It was perfectly balanced and the alcohol wasn't overwhelming. They also have wine and beer if cocktails aren't your thing. The local bread with butter and sea salt is a much for a starter. The bread is fresh, chewy, and salty. The butter is also delicious. So simple and so good. I decided to try the shrimp bucatini pasta: garlic cream, white wine, butter, herbs, Fresno chili. I would definitely recommend this entree. It came with five pretty large tail on shrimp. The shrimp was really fresh and wasn't overcooked. The sauce was light but rich. Definitely garlicky. And the pasta was perfectly al dente and the perfect shape for the dish. The portion size was good. It wasn't a giant mountain of pasta, but definitely a generous serving. My boyfriend opted for the Low Tide: 4 oysters, 1/2 pound cocktail shrimp, 1/2 pound snow crab. This is a great deal because it's so much food and a decent variety. I did get to try a cocktail shrimp and some of the snow crab. Again, everything was super fresh, well cooked, and high quality. If you're looking for a nice restaurant with delicious, fresh food, definitely check them out. read more

Wifey and I went in for a nice dinner last night. A nice dinner, we did have. Fresh, raw oysters, wonderful drinks, delicious bread, and delightful entrees. I had the red trout, she had the lobster pasta. Neither of us felt anything was missing from the meal- and then we had the pumpkin bread pudding. It was a fantastic end to an incredible meal. I am from Louisiana and I am picky about my seafood. Mass St Fish House hits the bar, though. First off, this is a very nice restaurant. The ambiance is just right. It is cozy and not harsh, if that makes any difference. The food is very good and I can tell the chefs are proud of their creations. I had the scallops and the seared brussell sprouts and they were delicious. My dining companion had the trout and I snuck a little taste. Divine! We will definitely be repeat customers. This establishment has a great selection of alcoholic beverages but we did not order any spirits. They seemed to be quite popular and I have heard good things about the wine. This restaurant is easily accessible and easy to navigate. The staff and servers seem very polite and accomodating. The prices are a bit steep on some of the items but this is fresh fish in the Midwest. Given that we are in landlocked Kansas, the prices seem reasonable. read more

Rent is expensive on Mass St., but I would pay $5. More to not leave hungry. Other guest had a similarly deficiency crab salad. My Companion had shrimp and plantain that was tastier and more filling. Service is friendly and excellent. Ambience is loud as the sounds just bounce off rock and walls with nothing to dampen them but a high ceiling. read more

Finding great even good seafood in the Midwest feels like such a crap shoot often. Mass St Fish House has some quality seafood with a relaxing but still elevated aesthetic. The bar is gorgeous and the bartenders make some really unique drinks like the "better brine" which my partner loved. The seafood is definitely very good, I'm not going to say it's the best seafood though. It's just so damn difficult to get the best in the Midwest. And that's more of a regional feature than any restaurants fault. I really enjoyed the Low Tide order of snow crab, cocktail shrimp and oysters. The shrimp tasted excellent and the cocktail sauce had that classic taste. The crab was really good, no empty claws or anything weird like that. Lots of meat in our cluster and the oysters were okay granted I'm not the biggest oyster fan so take that with a grain of salt. I'd be interested to go back and try some of the other dishes here such as their lobster pasta dish. Fun spot with really friendly service. read more

I really enjoyed my evening at Mass St. First off, the dirty martini complete with blue cheese stuffed olives was so smooth and delicious. The perfect palette opener for the oysters and mussels to come next. I tried a variety of fresh oysters and then moved onto the mussels. We came here for a date night yesterday. I saw they have happy hour daily from 4-6, which includes several drink and food specials. We got there early, around 4:30, and were seated right away. When we left around 5:30, the restaurant was full, and they were only seating parties who had reservations inside. We ordered the mussels and fries off the happy hour menu, and my husband ordered a hh beer, as well as a fish taco. In addition, we ordered the bread and butter, the shrimp bucatini, and the crab legs. We enjoyed everything except the mussels, which were pretty grainy. Last minute 30th Birthday plans brought myself and my significant other the absolute pleasure of dining at Mass St. Fish House & Raw Bar in Lawrence, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. The service was beyond exceptional, a breath of fresh air in an industry where good customer service can sometimes be hard to find. It was truly a delight to be so well taken care of and have servers be as kind and attentive as possible. The location was perfect for the evening plans, located directly on Mass. St in Downtown Lawrence, Kansas. We elected for outdoor seating because of the gorgeous 60 degree weather with heating lamps to complement the weather, accompanied by beautiful lighting and live acoustic music courtesy of live artists throughout downtown. The only minor complaint is patio seating is a bit compact, but everyone spoke quietly enough to enjoy the conversation between you and your dining partner. As a shareable plate we started with the Ahi Tuna Nachos. You absolutely have to order these when you go. The dish was like a full-blown dining experience, with an abundance of intense flavors hitting your palate with each bite. The Ahi Tuna without a doubt being the best we've ever had. The dish itself was different from what we expected, but so pleasantly surprised after our first bite. The Lobster Pasta was another standout dish, with the lobster tasting incredibly fresh, and the pasta cooked to perfection leaving a burst of flavor with every bite. The vodka sauce also very delicious and complimented both the lobster and pasta perfectly. Needless to say it was quite remarkable. The Pan Seared Black Cod is another must try, paired with roasted potatoes and mushrooms that are out of this world. The Cod was cooked perfectly and was very fresh tasting as well. Nothing to complain about with this dish and nothing I would've done differently. Overall, Mass St. Fish House has done an impeccable job at creating a fun and lively atmosphere, making this restaurant a great spot for a date night and an incredible start to the evening. There was servers who weren't assigned to my table, checking on us , clearing tables and refilling our glasses of water. The oysters were VERY good and fresh! I had East and West coast oysters. If you never had either one try one of each so that you can taste the difference. Thank me later. We returned in May 2024 after not having been there since before the pandemic in January 2017. We were very impressed by the changes. There now is a large outdoor dining area extending out onto the street in the area that previously was on-street parking in front of the restaurant. We had reservations for indoor dining, but next time during good weather we will try the outdoor dining. We were there during happy hour, and the food was outstanding. We got two Happy Hour Chef's Choice Oysters and the Happy Hour Fish Tacos. They were excellent. We also got glasses of house wine from the happy hour menu, and we were happy with both the white and the red house wines. From the regular menu, we got the Smoked Salmon Cubano Sandwich, the Shrimp Bucatini pasta, and the Butterflied Rainbow Trout. All were excellent. The trout was served opened up ("butterflied") on the skin, but the chef will remove the skin if you prefer. For fine dining, we usually prefer restaurants in Kansas City, but the Mass. St. Fish House is a match for the best in Kansas City for seafood. In short, we were surprised and impressed. We were slightly annoyed by one of the restaurant's policies. There seems to be an upcharge for all substitutions, as is common in some of the other downtown restaurants. For example, if you ask to substitute a vegetable for potatoes on an entree, there always will be an upcharge, regardless of the vegetables or the potatoes. To avoid that irritating policy, we will not request any substitutions next time. Alternatively, we can continue to prefer restaurants in west Lawrence, where substitutions are not a problem and where parking is easier. read more

Food was very good. In general the fish and seafood were fresh. I highly recommend trying happy hour. They have specials that are worth it. Oyster were ok. Fish and chips were nice Clam chowder was so so. It had too much potato. Clam flavor was diluted. Only one chance to make a 1st impression...and ours was not good. My wife and I were celebrating our 29th wedding anniversary and were expecting something much better after reading online reviews. Our greeter looked like they/he/she had slept in their pajamas which they/he/she were still wearing. Fortunately we were turned over to a respectable waitress who did a very good job. Dining on seafood in Kansas can be unpredictable at best. This experience was just so so. Premium prices usually reflect a premium dining experience. We did dine using real plates, multiple forks, and actual table cloths. The chef did their part in preparation and presentation, however, underneath were just average ingredients using small oysters to fetch high prices. Fun, intimate spot for happy hour or dinner! My best friend and I dropped in before a show in Lawrence and I left wanting more! Short on time, we ordered from the happy hour menu but I'll definitely be back some time for dinner. We shared a farmers salad and roasted Brussel sprouts (both standard but good), oysters and crab cakes (yum!), and a crispy trout plate, although I can't remember the name and I don't see it on the menu now so I wonder if it was a happy hour special. I cannot begin to tell you how perfectly crispy on the outside and soft the meat was or how amazing the flavor was. She was fantastic. We started with the Oysters and Champs. The oysters tasted fresh and a little salty which I really enjoyed. I can't remember the name but they were from Maine. Then my husband ordered the chowder and nachos which we shared. The nachos were great. I love the Ahi tuna combo with crispy won tons, you can't beat that. My husband enjoyed his chowder as well. For the end of our evening we ordered the chocolate flourless torte which Isis recommended with an after dinner drink. That torte was also delicious it had a nice chocolate shell with the best tasting center... like a dense pudding dream. I highly recommend. This is a nice upscale kinda trendy restaurant. Happy hour 7 days a week! We started with a dozen oysters and a bottle of champagne. Oysters we're fresh and tasty. 2nd course was a half order of fish and chips. The fish is lightly battered and the fries and the tarter sauce were housemade. I'm pretty positive everything they serve here is made in-house. We went back the very next week and enjoyed another stellar dinner. We had the most unique homemade ice cream for dessert -I can't remember what the flavor was called, but it had black pepper and edible flowers in it. It was strangely delicious. Went to LFK to visit the old stomping grounds - oh how I have missed Mass st Fish House. When you look at the restaurant from the outside it looks so small but when you walk in it's actually so HUGE! They have 3 floors and every table was occupied! We sat at the bar cause we just wanted to get happy hour and a few drinks. I tried the fish taco and oysters and holy moly EVERY BITE WAS TO DIE FOR. We also got the crab dip and that was licked clean. The owner/bartender was so kind to my boyfriend and I and let us try an amaro shot and talked to us about the different types of amaro they carry. From the moment we walked in to the moment we left - the service was exceptional. The kindness that everyone showed us just made our night so much better. Yes, we're in a landlocked state. Yes, we're from Florida and Yes, this place has great seafood! Second, we started with the amazing deal, they still have it, of a bottle of bubbles and 12 oysters for $30 ( it's not Andre or cooks either) The oysters were from Prince Edwards Island and you can never go wrong with those. They have a good balance of minerals and brine to them. We then moved on to the fish tacos and I believe those were black cod.. they got devoured, so no pictures sorry. The main dish was a butterflied grilled rainbow trout with potatoes and a really nice fennel salad. The trout was grilled to perfection and tastes just like I caught it myself that day and cooked it.
