Horrendous. Worst medical experience EVER. Unproffesional, rude, cancel last minute. Had no idea how to bill either of my two great insurances. Tried to get me to pay out of pocket when BOTH insurances would have covered in full. Called both insurances and they called this office to tell them just that. Six calls and they NEVER picked up at 11 am!! A complete mess. All they care about is making money NOT care of patients. AND NOT autism friendly. Stay away special needs parents. I've been going to Mass Eye for many years. Dr Jennifer Calnan, OD does a thorough job and my vision is well cared for. Additionally, I've had the same tech (Kristen) for several years and I'm equally pleased with her caring and thorough efforts. I was planning to do both my annual check-up and be fitted for contacts. But a routine discussion about my current contact lens supply (at home) helped confirm that would be wasteful for me. I.e. I would have paid money for a service I didn't need. I appreciate that! When I consume my VSP benefit (not on this trip), the folks running the eye glasses shop are always top-self as well. So nothing but good things to say about Mass Eye. read more

Take-away: They don't know what insurance their affiliated hospital takes. If you're going in for a surgery consultation, make sure the hospital to which they refer you takes your insurance. Read on if interested. I came in via public transportation for a consultation for strabismus surgery. I paid my $22 co-pay and saw the doctor. She was great. She told me that the surgeon's scheduler at Tufts Medical Center would be in touch with me to schedule the surgery. When I spoke by phone to the scheduler, she told me that Tufts Medical Center did not take my insurance, which is Tufts Health Direct. (Apparently they are two unrelated entities). Tufts Medical Center is the only hospital that MA Eye Associates works with. Either that or it's the only hospital that my doctor at MA Eye works with. So, I had to contact the Boston Children's Hospital, who takes my insurance and set up a new consultation with their doctor, for which I must wait four months. The records from my MA Eye Associate visit cannot be sent to the Children's Hospital, who requires their own doctor to do the consultation. I phoned MA Eye Association to complain. I told them that my visit--four hours of my time + the out-of-pocket co-pay--was a waste since the consultation was useless for moving forward. I asked why they didn't know at the outset, when I paid for the consult at the front desk with my insurance, that the hospital where I could be operated on would not take my insurance. The woman on the phone was nice and very apologetic. But ultimately, she told me that MA Eye had "no way of knowing" that my insurance wouldn't be good at Tufts Medical Center, after which she said that now that they know, they'll be aware of this going forward. I ended the conversation politely, but I don't buy that. MA Eye has been around for a long time, and my insurance isn't anything weird. MA Eye should have precautions in place for patients who they see, which informs them if the MA Eye-associated hospitals will accept that patient's insurance, especially when the visit is a consultation for surgery. I would love to be able to recoup at least my $22. I know I can't bill MA Eye for my valuable time they wasted, though I wish I could. read more

Went to urgent care for an eye issue and they sent me here because my eye doctor couldn't see me today. I've never been here before but they were able to see me that day. When I arrived check in was easy and i had a very small wait before I saw the doctor. She was great and very helpful. Overall i had a great experience and am grateful they saw me. read more

I'm not 100% about how I feel about this place, but I think I'll try them again the next time I need an eye exam. I've worked in customer service for a long time and I was mostly turned off with how the front desk was. Scheduling & Confirmation - was fine. But the doctor I was scheduled with went into early maternity leave and they had to reschedule (fine) but when I called back and asked a couple questions about contact samples the girl was like "well, if someone told you they'd have them..." kinda rude-ish and I was taken aback by her attitude. There was quite a long wait for my appointment with no one telling me how much longer. My follow up I waited even longer and was there past closing (at that point waiting in the exam room), again with no one quoting a wait time. I was also surprised about the front desk staff talking about a certain doctor (the one I was going to see, I think) taking a long time with patients - within patients earshot! And, they were eating behind the desk, I could see and smell the bagel and I thought that was pretty unprofessional. I was really surprised because they have a nice website, were very booked, and had a professional appointment confirmation system. The eye tech and doctor were super nice - I really liked them. I'm ultimately happy with my eyeglasses, but I think the front desk staff could work on some customer service and professionalism skills. read more

I had a great experience at Mass Eye in Tewksbury this morning. Staff was super friendly. Dr. Tracy gave an extraordinarily thorough exam. I visited because I was experiencing dry eyes. He ran through a number of tests, was very professional, and nothing felt rushed. He answered all my questions and offered some suggestions. I would certainly return, and I would request him again for sure. read more

The doctors re excellent we using have Dr. Bunker but on many occasions have bday other one. I have had several emergencies and each time they were able to see me even one day in a blizzard. The staff is let's so friendly and very attentive. The glasses shining right there also Nd Kimberley is an amazing person my whole family goes here all 7 of us yesterday I went with my 10 her old boy who needed reading and distance glasses. well my appointment was for 9:30 got there at 9:20 . went in and sat there until 10:08 when they called us in the room. The staff did a couple of test and then left waited again the doctor came in at 10:38 for 5 mins and it was over i was so upset . They called me and said there is a 9:30 opening . if i was even 15mins for my appt they would make you reschedule . My time is also important and they shouldnt make people wait that long .. One of the staff look at us still sitting there and said well you were early ugh. that pissed me off even more ..glad i don't have to return for a year read more

My son's new patient appointment was a disaster. The woman at the front desk was incredibly rude. It was apparent that her computer system wasn't working and took it out on us. She was shouting with the staff and doctors and what was worse was that none of them excused her or reprimanded her behavior. It was as if they were used to it and allowed it which is absolutely unacceptable! Very unprofessional. So as a first impression, my husband and I already made the decision that this place was not where we would want to establish our family eye care. The front desk was not the only problem. The doctor my son was scheduled with was just as bad. He could not keep any rude comments to himself. He did not even combine the two prescription for each eye to see if my son could see through it! We threw out the Rx and are now going to a reputable eye clinic. Mind you, this place was a default office for us due to our previous doctor moving. I never would have chosen this place as my first choice. It gets better. I called a few days later to request my son's records and told them of the horrific experience we had. They apologized left and right and even patched me through to the administrator of the entire practice. He could not have expressed enough the embarrassment that his staff displayed to us and ensured that it would be handled. Not only that, he promised us a new free appointment and better service. This is the kicker: he stated he would call me back with an appointment. Two weeks later? Not a single call. I was not expecting it anyways from this place. Please do not waste your time here. I wish Yelp allowed us to give negative stars. read more

The doctors are fine. My biggest gripe is with scheduling. They seem to book multiple patients with the same doc in one time slot. Over a two-week period before my appointment I received three text messages and one one-line (email) reminder. about the date and time of my appointment. I arrived sufficiently early (10 mins) to check in and use the facilities before my scheduled appointment. When I had not been called in to see the doc 30 minutes after my schedule, I left. I've had the same experience in the past at the Tewksbury office as I've been a patient for several years. I am honestly speechless with the receptionists. They were beyond disrespectful. My boyfriend had to pick up his contacts and I needed to book an appointment so I thought why not kill two birds with one stone. I'm at the front desk booking the appointment and soon a line formed (consisting 2 other people and one already busy with the other receptionist). The receptionist grunted and said, "This is why you should have called. Why couldn't have you call instead of coming in. You didn't need to come in. Let me get these people first then I'll finish you". After she was done, I approach her desk and she blankly ignored me for 5 minutes pretend to busy with other stuff and muttering comments about me to the other receptionist beside her. I have been for two appointments in the last several weeks and both experiences were great. I first saw Dr. Perkins for a full eye exam, which was very thorough and resulted in a very accurate prescription. Next I saw Dr. Calnan for a contact lens fitting. She was friendly, professional, and thorough. Plus now I can see without glasses. Making an appointment was fast and easy. They seemed to have lots of openings, and I was able to get a time that fit my schedule. They have three locations, in Tewksbury, Lowell, and Chelmsford. read more

Finally decided it was time to upgrade my 10 year old glasses so I stopped in and was taken right in by the technician. I actually enjoyed picking out my new glasses because I was treated so well. My tech took her time, listened and really knew what I wanted from my frames and she delivered with many styles to choose from. I'm happy with my choice and with the caring attention. read more

This place is the worst - lousy customer service- see the doctor late. I ask for 2 things, a prescription for glasses and a prescription for contacts. I get the glasses there no issue, they make them on site so it's a sale. I was given 2 sets of contacts to see which I like best. Come back with the contact box and request order for the one I like. I had an eye dr appt on Feb 9th. Really needed an exam and a NEW pair of glasses. I couldn't see my regular Dr cause he was booked so I sucked it up. On the 9th we had a snowstorm. They closed and I had to reschedule. When I rescheduled I had to wait over a frigging month for the next appt and of course, not with my own dr. My appt was on March 14th. Yup. Yesterday. So they called and cancelled AGAIN. I had to reschedule. Now I have no patience AT ALL. Yes it's weather, mother nature, but my glasses are in RIDICULOUS shape and I need a new pair. Like NOW. So I called to reschedule. Here we go. I told them there was NO WAY I would be waiting until April, so bump someone else because I AM DONE. She got the supervisor on the phone. Back and forth we go, and I'm relentless. You WILL see me before April and it WILL BE at the Tewksbury office. Not LOWELL. NOT CHELMSFORD. My appt was made for today at 2:30. I just got a call that told me there is no power in Tewksbury (bright group of people who had school today with no power I guess). My appt will be at 3:20 in CHELMSFORD. I am beside myself. Thank you Mass Eye Associates. You are just awesome..... For the past few months I've been placing contact lens orders with 1800 contacts only to have this office tell them I don't have a prescription. Cancel order. Now I call the office. Ok we will fix that. Place order again. Again the office denies my prescription. Again, ORDER 3 , and understand I'm needing the lenses, and AGAIN DENIED!! I called yesterday only to get the voicemail. In tears, stressed to the max, I leave an emotionally distraught message asking AGAIN for the prescription to be VERIFIED PLEASE. Then I researched and found another eye Dr. A doctor's office should NOT treat anyone this way, and they have been insanely rude, so time to go. Fast forward to today, I get home and Mr. MASS EYE leaves a message telling me they will approve the prescription however they are RELEASING me as a patient because I'm "abusive" to the staff!!! SERIOUSLY...ABUSIVE is treating a patient like garbage, canceling appointments on them repeatedly, and denying the prescription for contacts over and over. YOU are the abusive ones. SHAME ON YOU for trying to put the blame on ME. KNOW I will tell everyone and anyone all about your lack of respect, and decent treatment for your patients. I'm a teacher, and far from "abusive". That's like punching someone's face repeatedly and telling them it's their fault for being black and blue. Truly DISGUSTING. Thank you for the stress, aggravation and disrespect. I have many business/patient relationships all over the city, along with professional contacts and relationships. I am respectful, kind and very understanding. How my near nervous breakdown over contact lens orders and eye care was construed as "abusive" is beyond my understanding. Worst, most ignorant, rudest staff on the planet right here in Tewksbury. Know I am not finished with this situation. I'm contacting the CEO if need be, but someone needs to come train the staff with some clerical organization management and some introduction to empathy 101: human feelings. I have always been happy with my visits to Mass Eye. My last visit was excellent. I think very highly of Dr. Yi as an ophthalmologist and a wonderful person. He performed cataract surgery for me last year. The surgery was very successful with no complications. I would recommend Mass Eye and Dr. Yi without hesitation. read more

The tech does the prescriptions. I told her it was too strong and straining my eyes. She said based on my age that should be my prescription. Then she dialated my pupils, so I had blurry vision when the doctor came in. The doctor said if I thought it was too strong then she could give me a less strong prescription without actually checking my eyes on the equipment based on her experience. She wrote me a prescription based on her "experience". I will never fill this prescription Then she recommended by over the counter reading glasses based on her "estimates". She did check for cateracts and such. This was a waste of a visit and insurance premiums. DONT GO HERE IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN ACCURATE EYE PERSCRIPTION. You should have an optometrist do an complete eye exam and prescription. read more

Charging patients $400 for a contact fitting is ridiculous. It's been 7 months since the last eye exam, there is no need to charge for another one. You know insurance isn't going to cover more than 1 exam a year. Dr. Kong is the best, and I've been going here for a really long time, but I won't be back. read more

I didn't go to the Tewksbury office. I was seen in Chelmsford with Dr. Yi. He was excellent! Quiet but very smart. He operated on my cataract and I was so scared but he made sure it was an easy experience for me. Dr. Perkins had recommended him and I trust him. I will have Dr. Yi do the other eye soon. The staff was very nice and efficient. The surgery center in Andover was a good experience as well. In chelmsford, I ordered glasses from the Optician, Dave Ditivi (something like that). He is the first person to actually make recommendations that were right on. He has a gift, I think. read more

I've been here two or three times and each time I have not had a great experience but my appointment today solidified the fact that I will not be returning here ever again. I was brought in for my appointment and the ophthalmologist was sitting at the computer, staring at my chart. I felt very awkward because he did not look at me when I came into the room, did not introduce himself, and was not inviting or friendly. We sat in silence for a good 3-5 minutes as he was staring at the computer. He finally mediocrely stated the reason for my being there that day (mind you he didn't even ASK me why I came in today). He started to do his eye exam and didn't explain what he was going to do or WHAT HE WAS PUTTING INTO MY EYEBALLS. Again, I repeat, he put eyedrops and ointments into my eyeballs and did exams on me WITHOUT TELLING ME WHAT IT WAS OR WHY. WHAT?!?!?!?!?! After the appointment, he wrote me a prescription and did not tell me what it was for and why he was giving it to me (is that illegal? I feel like that's illegal). To top it all off he complained 2 or 3 times about how he was hungry and how the computer was slow. Sorry my presence annoyed you before lunch. Go eat a Snickers. read more

Have been a patient at MassEye for several years now. Finally am adding my voice to the comments I see here regarding the skills of the scheduling/reception/front of office staff. This applies to two employees I have spoken to regarding rescheduling appointments - my comments are not applicable to all of the staff. My appointments have been changed more than once due to scheduling conflicts of the office and/or doctors. The last two times I have called the office for assistance, the receptionist has been gruff in demeanor and rushed in her speaking. No time is allowed for the caller to process the information, review their calendar, or ask questions. The clear message given is that the patient is lucky to be getting an appointment for care. I was also told not to bother being put on the waiting list in case of a cancellation because the list is too long (again, would be a bother to her). Having your first point of contact in a doctor's office make you feel unwelcomed and a bother is not the message you want to be sending. This is in direct conflict to the professionalism and quality of doctors, technicians and optical shop staff at Mass Eye who I have always found to hold themselves to a high standard and provided excellent care. read more

I had lower eyelid surgery last oct with Dr. Kapadia, been in pain 10 months, I am now disfigured for life, had to have repair surgery done last week at Lahey Clinic she could not repair the outside lid scar tissue, have to wait now 3 months to see if eye fluid leakage goes away if not she has to check for tear duct damage. please stay away from this BUTCHER read more

just had a terrible experience at the Tewksbury location. They want all your personal information, social security number, medical history, etc. then comes time for my exam. The doctor never actually did anything. the nurse did the whole exam unsupervised. then the doctor came in and wrote me a prescription and left. No one ever explained anything. Terrible, terrible place. I'm going some were else to pay out of pocket for a whole new exam. I would not recommend this place to some one I hate. read more
