Stephen was great! Not only did he load and unload all our boats, he also emphasized safety, was hilarious, and was basically a tour guide on the ride to and from the river. The scenery was beautiful, the gear was well-maintained, and the 7-mile kayaking route was both relaxing and a decent challenge. Keep in mind that you must have shoes with a closed or strapped heel (no slides or flip flops). It comes in handy. And make sure you have sunscreen, a hat, maybe some sleeves, and snacks/water. In the fall, the water can be low. There will be obstacles, but follow their tips and you should be able to navigate around them (or over them... the "scoot" technique was key). It may not be easy but it will be gratifying! The rapids aren't too rough on a nice fall day, but you may need to work to get out of shallow parts. The faster flows are a really good time but it's not like whitewater rafting or anything. Most of the trip was like a lazy river, but with some quick, low rapids to make it a little spicy (in a good way). The water was clear with lots of fish, birds, and beautiful leaves about. I enjoyed the canoeing, and the scenery was amazing. The instructor gave some great tips on how to get out of difficult situations and also provided good information about the area during the ride over. The only reason I am not giving it a 5-star rating is that the canoeing portion was a bit too long for me (kayaking might have been a better option). read more

The canoeing wasn't that good. there were many obstacles, hidden rocks, shallow parts, and dips. We even got stuck on a few rocks. Our instructor wasn't bad though, and he did a good job explaining the rules and what to do. read more

My family and I did the River Tubing Adventure. The staff is friendly and I think they generally want you to have a safe time. But I could have done without being told about six times during the briefing about how we would have to pay for our tube if it got a hole in it. I mean you're giving this tube to bounce down a river that has rocks and sticks and logs in it. What I dislike the most is how long it took to get going. Whatever time they tell you to arrive means get there and wait around for half an hour to 45 minutes before anything really begins. You spend far more time waiting around than you do on the river. The entire kayak experience was fantastic. I walked up, bought some water shoes from their store that has most of what you may forget to bring, then purchased a ticket. The team was welcoming, helpful, and hilarious (the bus entertainers aka the tour guides). My take away is when you hear the words "self guided tour" it means good luck, we hope to pick you up at the end of your seven mile journey. I made it! And now I'm sore!!! WORST SERVICE EVER!!!! When we arrived for our excursion today, we were treated with incredible disrespect, rudeness, and intimidation by the main staff "guide" Mike Pastor. He was condescending and showed zero consideration and zero curtesy. I had forgotten my daughters closed toed shoes and rushed back to the condo to get them (before the time to leave on the bus) and Mike was a complete jerk about it. He was extremely condescending to my friend and her daughter in front of all other 20 customers present!! He intimidated my friend, her daughter and my daughter's, alike. He kept yelling, "if you can't swim you can't go!!" He yelled at my friend in front of everyone. He made her feel SO uncomfortable! How would he know if she had a disability, or not? Either way, HE TALKED SO TERRIBLE TO HER!! He even told her that her mask wasn't appropriate!!! THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH HER MASK!!! He was so harsh with his tone and tongue and attitude that my friend and her daughter were afraid to go on the excursion and backed out. HE WAS EXTREMELY RUDE!!! HE TREATED HER LIKE TRASH in front of her daughter and everyone else!! I will NEVER use this companies "services" again. Just because there are no refunds, this does NOT give the main staff "guide" the right to treat customers like this! WHAT HE DID WAS WRONG!! Even the other staff members seemed shocked at his behavior; I could see it on their faces! He wouldn't listen to any explanations!! I paid a lot of money for a NEGATIVE EXPERIENCE!!! Kids Absolutely LOVED Ziplining & High Jumping in the Adventure park -- and I loved watching :-) We went in mid September so there were no lines, and everything was fast and efficient. The staff was incredible, very nice kind and knowledgeable. The only con would have to be the price, the mega ziplining combo which includes ziplining, rock climbing and a high jump are 30.00 per person and my kids went 3x over the course of our visit (YIKES). Staff was rude and bossy. The river was WAY too low to tube. There were way too many sections that were rocky and you had to walk the tube out of them. The point of tubing is to relax on your tube and take in the scenery. We spent more than half the time, probably close to 3/4, outside the tube trying to walk it past the rocks. This is not a tour for anyone incapable of walking on slippery river rocks in a current. More challenging than you might think. Especially if you have children or older people in your group that you are responsible for. Wouldn't go back. read more

We did the river tubing 'adventure'. They warned us to stay away from the rocks in the river in case of an accident with the tubes, so as soon as I got into the river I navigated myself to the middle of the river and started floating away. Suddenly the tube started deflating, so the tube must have scraped against a rock, which I didn't even feel. Then the real adventure began. Everyone in my party at this point was way ahead of me. My tube completed deflated. I had to scramble up and walk to the river's shore, walking across the really stony and uneven river surface. Then I had to walk back UP the river towards the point where Massanutten Adventures launched us into the river. I could not walk along the river shore because the bank was really steep and full of brush. Anyway, I got to the launch area...and Massanutten Adventures had completely left the launch area. This was 15 or so minutes after I had launched into the river. There wasn't a soul around. I had no phone (left it on the bus per their suggestion so it wouldn't get wet) so I had to WALK up the road to one of the nearby houses and ask them to call Massanutten Adventures. The kind people who I found tried to phone Massanutten Adventures, but they got an answering machine saying that the Massanutten Adventures office was closed. The police had to be called, and they were really nice and helpful in getting me to the place where my group's tubing adventure ended. They also tried to contact Massanutten Adventures to come and get me, but they also got a recorded message advising that their offices were closed. Not too helpful eh? I finally got to the place where my group had landed, thanks to the local police. The cop who helped me expressed frustration that Massanutten Adventures just 'dumps' people into the river and picks them up downstream with no assistance or lifeline in-between, if needed. He was right! Massanutten Adventures did refund me for my trouble, but I wouldn't go on another adventure with them. read more

If you like lazy rivers, nature, and a tiny bit of challenges to spice up your drift, river tubing is fantastic! Albeit I obtained a black n blue butt cheek from going down a level I rapid and being tethered to a 9 year old who could not paddle around rocks, I had a great time! The river trip is about 1.5 hours long and very relaxing. Of course, it would be emmensely boring if all you did was aimlessly float... There were several level I rapids that were fun to navigate and spin tube through and one was a little risky, full of logs and rocks. Please keep this in mind when tethered to a small child and keep the bootie and legs high up on your tube. I had a ton of fun, and the only down fall was waiting on all the slow pokes to reach the extraction point. I highly recommend this activity at massanutten. Tip: read more

What kind of a tubing place doesn't allow you to bring a cooler float??!!! Totally wasn't expecting that! This looks like a nice resort in VA. They look like a year round recreation resort with skiing, tubing, kayaking, canoeing and anything else they can cram into their facility. can't say I'm a fan, didn't get to go tubing because it was way too cold. But I give it 2 stars purely on the fact that we couldn't have a booze cooler! Boo! read more

Canoeing...a little more work than I thought it would be. Check in was easy. We met at the location across from the Massanutten market at 7:30am. At check in we we payed and then was required to sign 2 waivers. After everyone checked in we were then transported by bus to the river which was about 10-15 minutes away. During the ride Stan gave us a little info about all the local things to do and places to go in the area with a little background info on each. The ride alone was like a little mini city tour. Ok so we get to the river but before we're able to get in, Stan has to give us a mandatory orientation. In my opinion, in addition to this orientation they should also send info by mail or email or some form prior to arrival because it's a lot of info and we only got about 1/4 of what he was saying and it was vital information. Now we're well on our way and I can officially say I was scared to death. Thankfully I was in a canoe with someone extremely strong and a lot more athletic than me to pick up my slack and has a little bit more brains than I do lol. I guess those 3-4 days a week in the gym and 4 years of college paid off for us lol. They told us it would be 6 class 1 rapids but it was more like 8. On the 3rd one we got stuck on the rocks and my life flashed before my eyes but my hero got out of the canoe and just pulled us out of the rapids. When we approached the rocks that were sticking out of the water all I could think about was the Iceberg that took down the Titanic. 2 1/2 hours (7 miles) of rowing is a long time especially if you're as non athletic as me. However it takes about 1 1/2 hour to get to the half way mark so my suggestion would be for this company to have a meet up point somewhere along that point for the people that are exhausted and want to stop. Especially considering the fact that around the half way point is roughly where the water is standing still and you HAVE to row or you'll just be sitting there. Again on this day it was a little overcast and I'm appreciative of that because I couldn't imagine taking this trip in the blazing hot sun. I wouldn't have made it to the end. I can see why some people would say that this river is a joke but for me it was rather strenuous and thrilling in the beginning. The zip lining looked awesome, but while on my stay I did the summer tubing. One of the coolest things I have seen in a long time. I wanted to go tubing in the river, but time got away from me. This review is for Massanutten Adventures' DC day trip tour. Let me start by saying that I don't normally write online reviews. I generally just post snark on my own Facebook page and interact with my network of friends and family. But, I just arrived back at my Massanutten rental, and I feel the need to write this review for anyone staying at the resort who might be interested in the Washington, D.C., day trip. Our time in D.C. was actually enjoyable. I didn't mind leaving at 5:45am at all, and the drive into town was quiet during the dark hours of the morning. Not a problem! The tour had two options--be dropped off to tour the Smithsonians on your own or to stay with the group and tour the Lincoln/WW2/Vietnam memorials, Arlington Cemetery, and then the Capitol/Library of Congress. Again, I actually enjoyed the time in D.C., and I walked about 11 miles according to my FitBit. But, for 99$/person, there are a few things that I wish I had been told beforehand: 1) The tour guide does not offer insights and details about the locations you visit. I didn't expect a tour guide that would walk around with us and tell us about different sites, but I thought he would give some details about things that we passed rather than saying "on the left is the Albert Einstein statue" or "the hated Internal Revenue Service is up ahead." He mentioned that he'd been doing this for 12 years, but had no info other than locations were on the right or left. That was a bit of a let down for when we were slowly moving through the normal D.C. traffic. 2) The tour includes a dinner stop in Manassas, VA. This is included in the price of the tour, and apparently they have had an arrangement to stop at the "Great American Buffet" for the last four years. By no stretch of the imagination am I a foodie, but the food here was simply awful. It was heated canned food that was slightly doctored in the kitchen. As my sister-in-law said in a text, "if hotdogs are your best option, then you've got it bad." The sweet tea was good. But, a few too glasses of sweet tea made the return drive painful. 3) The return drive was not just painful--it was excruciatingly bad. Out of curiosity when we left the restaurant's parking lot, I turned Waze on, and it said we would be home within 1:38. I thought this was great since we were told it would probably take until 9pm. This was almost half an hour early. Well, 9p was right. At three separate times, the bus driver detoured from the shortest route possible on the freeway with no traffic accidents per the Waze reports. We wound up going up and down a mountain that was simply not safe with the bus. We slowed down to 18 miles per hour at one point--again we left a 65mph interstate to drive in slower conditions that were not good for the bus' condition. At one point on the return drive, there was an older female a few rows behind us in the bus who accidentally said outloud, "This is the longest 10 miles I've ever been on." The back of the bus started laughing loudly, and then you started to hear even more phones with Waze's familiar voice providing painful reminders that we were not going the quickest way home. The drive was so painful on the way back that 1/3 of the adult men on board started getting up and packing up their party's belongings before the bus was stopped in the parking lot. I thought that the bus might erupt into clapping when we finally arrived, but people darted off the bus so quickly. The only possible reason for the slow return is that the tour company must be under contract to keep tour goers out for a certain number of hours and that we were returning too quickly. The route we took was not the fastest and driving over the mountainside was not good for keeping the bus in good condition. You could hear gears and brakes making noises at times. Even if the tour driver and guide were intentionally trying to slow down our return, I'd have preferred sticking to the interstate and going slower. At least then I would have felt a bit safer. This is far from my first tour. I've done tours all over Central America, Eastern and Northern Europe, as well as in similar American and Western European cities. But the drive on this was one of the worst. On the way back, it was dark after dinner. The tour guide said nothing until we rounded the corner to get into the Massanutten parking lot. Then, he mentioned tips. Right. We tipped $20 only because we didn't have smaller denominations. If I had $5s, that's what I would have given. read more

This is a family run business, that cares about their guests and their safety. They will cancel if river conditions are unsafe, and prevent people from bringing alcohol on the river so your family doesn't have to deal with obnoxious drunks on the ride back to the resort. Highly recommend them. We go every year and have never had a problem. Morning trips are the best!! read more

HORRIBLE! You're paying them for a bus ride and 15 minute lesson by the shore. The rest of the trip, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. You've signed away any rights and are liable for any and all of the equipment. They simply drop you off, and pick you up at the end. No guide, no experts. They are college students off on their break for their summer job. IF YOU HAVE SMALL CHILDREN, avoid this like the plague. YOUR CHILDREN ARE IN DANGER with these people. We have two small children, and were forced to separate onto 1 canoe watching over 2 kids, and 1 adult separated into a kayak (I believe this was simply to upsell the more expensive kayak trip, rather than regards for our kids safety). Of course, when our canoe flipped on the river, we had to make a choice between saving our kids, while trying to save their equipment. We ended up abandoning the canoe, which they billed us $600, and we were on a 4-hour long ordeal, trudging thru private farm property trying to get rescued! Bottom line, DO NOT RISK YOUR LIFE ESPECIALLY YOUR KIDS LIVES with this Mickey Mouse wanna-be company. They are hacks, and you will be responsible for your own lives AND their equipment! read more
