The service was excellent and really they don't make restaurants like this anymore. In fact, I think they broke the mold with this one. It's a good place. Everybody likes it. It's local. It's probably not something that people from outside of town are going to want to go to though. Doesn't mean you shouldn't try it. It just means that you need to know what you're going to expect. Imagine going to a greasy spoon. Because that's exactly what this is, a greasy spoon in every way. The place is situated in an old building that probably housed 15 different businesses since it was built 100 years ago and Mass Arts is the last one that's been built there recently. They obviously have updated some of the old knob and tube with some on-wall electrical and that explains everything you need to know about the ambiance. Massarts is a surprisingly good little dinner style place a bit off the beaten path, but easy to get to. If you are driving thru on the turnpike or headed in or out of the city, the food and prices blow away any chain restaurant. A little family run restaurant with Great home cooked food and great prices. They are worth a little side trip off the highway. My wife and I went here to try it because of a rave review of their pies in The Triblive. Well, I don't know that I'd trust the reviewer's advice... the pies were the least impressive thing we had. They were ok, but nothing to brag about, and generally not available until lunch. We had pancakes, I had bacon and an egg over easy. The things I loved were the fact they serve real butter and real maple syrup. And the bacon was thick and well cooked. I'll definitely be back when I am in the area. read more

Long waits only one cook that's super backed up , the food was pretty good but walls are dusty cobwebs need to clean better . Never been at a restaurant that serves pancakes and French toast and didn't have any maple syrup available to its customers. Had an early dinner here recently. My Dad got the seafood special & he said it was fresher & tastier than the Joe's Crab Shack he had the day before. The waitress was very friendly & said she would pass along my Dad's compliments to the chef. I got a bacon cheeseburger & it was on the small side, which is perfect for me. My Mom got a side with her burger, so if you're super hungry I'd go with a double burger. I can't wait to go back to try the seafood! First time visitors. Lots of history around there. Had a super waitress who answered every question we had. Ordered eggs, toast breakfast potatoes and a pancake. Personally loved the pancake and their own syrup , spouse didn't enjoy it though. I had ham and cheese omelette , toast and potatoes. Omelette was very good and it was all enjoyed . Coffee seemed weak but I really like the bitter stuff so I may not be the best judge . The space itself was pretty cool even though the worn out benches had holes in it which might turn off some but I'm ok with it. Food came fast and hot. A litttle facelift and this place would be lots better. The prices were the cheapest I've seen in a non chain place in a long time so if you are looking for nothing fancy but tasty , this is a winner. read more

I have enjoyed eating at massarts since I was a child, the menu is the same, as is the quality. Each day has specials, all are good. I love spaghetti on Thursday and fish cakes with macaroni and cheese on Fridays. All soups are great and if you have room for dessert you'll like the pie. And not to forget the service is wonderful. Thurs. special of spaghetti w/ meat sauce $6.85!! Its an old fashion Mom and Pop establishment that is a landmark to the community of Tarentum since 1923! This is our favorite breakfast spot. We went today and I always forget to take pictures of our food before we devour it. Seriously, I said to my husband that their hot cakes are by far my favorite ever, and I consider myself somewhat of a food connoisseur. The potato pancakes are delicious but you have to get there early before they sell out which they always do. We get the bacon crispy and tried the home fries today which we also got well done. They were sliced potatoes done crispy with a nice flavor. Awesome waitresses that work here. Most of the customers are regulars. This place is gross. I'm local graduate so I thought I would give it a shot. Must not be too keen on customer service here at all or proper food protocol. I got a salad here while I was pregnant with my son I came with a friend for lunch and my 1 year old daughter. The salad was covered and beets and beet juice almost made me puke everywhere. I decided to just pick and drain the beets out and continue eating. My daughter got eggs and french toast if I can remember correctly. There was a dusty old fan on and the waitress must have been in a rush to leave because she was cleaning pretty quickly. She spray and exuberant amount of Windex near our table and the fan quickly breezed every spray directly towards us and fell perfectly onto our food, You could literally see what appeared to be oil spots all over my daughters eggs and setting on the syrup. I quickly grabbed the plate off of her and turned towards the waitress saying, "excuse me mam, your Windex made it more on our plates then on the window your attempting to clean." She took our food resentfully and made them order a new round of food. My friend quickly commented once she walked away and we discussed how rude to spray harmful cleaners near customers, near food, and near children. Definitely a local joint for the old forks in the area that drown the distaste for the food with crappy coffee. Better diner choices. read more

Ordered breakfast about 10 am. Finally received our food about 10:30 am. I ordered a ham and cheese omelette with home fries. The food was ok, but the omelette arrive at my table with another plate on top of it. When the two plates were separated, the cheese stuck to the other plate. The waitress removed the cost of the cheese from the bill. The business does not accept credit cards, but depends on the bank ATM next door for folks to get cash to pay their bills. read more

Went here for breakfast. Waited 45 minutes for food while the waitress kept throwing a dirty rag on our table when she wasn't using it. Food came out and it was terrible. French toast was not cooked fully through, scrambled eggs were flat, toast was drenched in butter. No apologies from wait staff, not even when asked how the meal was and informed them it wasn't very good. Will not be going back. Just because it's old doesn't always mean it's good. read more
