If you are near Alvarado, TX, I hope you have an opportunity, no, that you take the opportunity to stop here. First, don't judge a book by its cover. This is a must stop. It is a small operation putting out a high quality product in a small town environment. Everyone that works there is so nice and personable. So we found the place with Yelp and I am a sucker for small bbq places. We walked in and were greeted as we entered the door by two very nice women. They gave us instructions on how the ordering works and told us the Thursday special. Loaded backed potato. We chose the fillings and the meat. It was the tater, dessert and drink for $15. We had seen the size of the potato already and chose to split it, had it made with fatty brisket, and of course a 1/4 lb of sausage. We took our order up to the window and met the namesake of the restaurant, but by we did not know it then. The options in that simple dish was great. Again, fatty brisket, we did sliced on the side, we actually got both jalepeno and cheese, as well as regular smoked sausage. The sweet tea was great, not too sweet, perfect for my tastes. They insisted on carrying the tray out for us. Epic- the brisket was tender, juicy and perfectly smoked. The bark was great, had a touch of spice on the back end. The sausage was perfect. Honestly, I never asked for Bbq sauce, never needed it. The owner came out later, struck up a conversation. Let us know future menu items of which I am looking forward to. The banana pudding was sweet, but good. They are moving in a few days, but just around the corner. I look forward to stopping in again at their new location and new menu items. Just throwing this out as a recommendation for a future option: To go with the real potato fries that you are adding, consider adding fatty brisket on top, cover in shredded cheddar with a little pico and sour cream as well as jalapeños. Funny, we went to a political rally and it was held at Massey's BBQ. The BBQ is excellent - brisket was out of this world good! Bit pricy, but then again, all good BBQ is the same cost - high! This place has the BEST BBQ! The welcoming atmosphere and staff is a plus! We went at closing and still received a great meal and wonderful welcome. I have ate here many times and it had always been great but the last two times were not good so I don't see a third chance. I don't know what has happen but the last two visits the sliced beef was dried out and not fit to eat. I also paid for two banana pudding but they forgot to put it in the bag. I have moved on to another Barbecue restaurant so will not be back to Massey's. Give Hard 8 in Burleson a try if you want some good barbecue. It's about the same price as Massey's and the slice beef is moist and tender like Massey's once was. read more

Really enjoyed this place. The atmosphere is exactly what you would expect from a small town BBQ place. They be are super friendly and helpful. I would imagine that they have some amazing events on the outdoor seating area. It was pretty good BBQ. They brisket had a really good bark and was really flavorful. I'm guessing we must have got there a little later so the food was a little dry but still very much an amazing value. If your in this area and need a good bite to eat I would be recommend Massey's just to for the be staff alone but the good was really pretty good read more

On the quest for the best BBQ and while TX still has the majority of real deal stellar places. Today was the best for Massey's. It's like a day all the time the best places just don't do the best at all things BBQ. I give the 5 on the turkey. Excellent flavor, good portion on a sandwich and great quality, cooked perfectly. The brisket was not even average, not much flavor and tough, hard to eat without sauce but just hard to eat. Some of the best Mac and Cheese at the BBQ place. Great sauce, great flavor just the right thickness. The sausage was not the best I've had, good flavor but not real tender and barely noticeable there was jalapeño flavor. I'd come back to see how the pull pork and ribs are in the future. I just being honest 3 is the best I can do on this day if the brisket isn't good then is a bad bbq day read more

What can I say - Massey's turned out to be a great place for BBQ. Great call, Yelp! Anyway, in Alvarado for business. When supper time rolled around, I wanted - what else, of course - barbecue. Yelp's best recommendation was Massey's. Extensive menu: sliced and chopped brisket; sausage, pulled port, ribs. When you walk in, at the start of the line, you're provided with a laminated menu that you mark with a Sharpie. My selection that evening was sliced brisket, sausage, potato salad, pinto beans. Of course, sauce is always on the side (as must be done with really good smoked meat). The brisket was tender, the sauce was "old fashioned" (it's not sweet or vinegary), the sausage was perfectly done and flavorful, and the potato salad was tasty. The pinto beans, on the other hand, are EXCELLENT. Probably the best beans I've ever been served at a BBQ place, ever. They're not the typical overly-sweetened barbecue beans; they're just good, honest pintos with no doctoring whatsoever. They beans are great...even if that's all you ate! I've tried these guys twice now and their BBQ is better than some I've tried in Cali, but it's disappointing for Texas BBQ. The sliced brisket was not moist and had to be cut with a knife. The sausage was something you pick up from heb. I like the updates they've done to the patio, but they have a long was to go to make good bbq. For comparison, try Franks near Red Oak. I ordered the loaded baked potato with chopped barbecue. The potato was extremely small. My husband ordered sliced brisket. His meat was very thin and it was dry. All of the portions were small. No one ever came back to ask if everything was ok or if we needed anything. They weren't very busy, so they could have easily asked. You have to go get your drink refills yourself. Went to Massey's last week while visiting family in the area. The BBQ was plentiful for the price and the service was outstanding. They have a really strange way to order your meal. You get a laminated menu and grease pencil when you walk in the door. Circle or check the items that you want, then hold the menu up to a plexiglass windows where they prepare your order. You then move down to the cash register and pay for your items, pick up your tray of food and go find a table. It was OK, just different. Ok so here we go. We stopped here on the way, place had good ratings so we gave it a try. We ordered ribs, turkey, pulled pork, and brisket. Everything except the turkey we received was super dry you could tell it had been sitting where ever it was for a while. My son liked the turkey, I thought the ribs were good. We were looking for a place to eat outside as we are traveling with the family pet. The owner introduced himself, explained the menu, and helped us to not order too much food (we still couldn't eat all that we ordered, but we sure tried). My husband had the brisket and vegetables.
