The Chicken Fried Steak was tender and crust light n crispy. The Fried Catfish was fresh with a light crispy coating With a loaded fresh bake potato. You could tell the oil in the fryer was not old that gives fried food a bad taste. Our meal was not greasy. The coconut cream pie was icing on the cake! This Cafe has a warm welcoming feel to it. Quaint hometown hole in the wall. Come in grab a seat. We ordered a blt, chicken and waffles, and a kids mini corn dogs with mac and cheese. Everything simple nothing fancy here. Came here with the family since my family members said this place was delicious. I gotta be honest this was only a mediocre experience. I got the jalapeno pork chop with Mac and cheese and fried okra. The pork chop and okra was good except the pork chop was mostly bone. The Mac and cheese was probably a 3-4/10 for me since it wasn't overly cheesy and the first few bites were not hot. The waitress was very nice and answered all of our questions. Overall I don't know if I would drive out of my way to come here again. read more

The fish basket at The Daily Special Café was a joke. My wife and I both ordered it, and it had absolutely no flavor -- just some fried nothing on a plate. No seasoning, no taste, just bland and boring. And the kicker? We paid $21 for it. For that price, I expected at least a hint of flavor, not something that tastes like they dipped cardboard in grease. I'm honestly surprised I haven't left a review for this place yet.... It may be because I don't want too many people there when I go ;) The food is so tasty. Kids love the Chicken and Waffle. Pancakes are fluffy and delicious. I can't get enough of the Jalapeño infused Pork Chop. The sides are great. The CFS is huge and delicious. Great service and cozy little place to sit back and enjoy. We go here every meal when we are close by and have never been disappointed. read more

Not bad if you're not picky. Being a resident of Alvarado you're held hostage to chain fast food restaurants. This is one of the only non chain establishments in town. Dirty restrooms. Salad consisted of iceberg lettuce with 1/2 slice of a tomato. Beef and noodles, I would say were not homemade. I am guessing frozen. Not good tasting. Waitress took dirty exterior door mat outside, came back indoors. I never saw her wash her hands but continued to serve people. What a crazy day. Spent all day at the Renaissance Festival. Get to the hotel, which is great, but the water is off because of a main break. No problem, rest a minute and then go eat. I always look for the place the locals go, and this is it! This is the place the girl at the hotel recommended. The waitress was SO nice and friendly. We got our tea, and she told us the water was off here too. Bummer! Mikey got chicken fry, and I had to try the special. Grilled marinated jalapeño pork chop! And throw in some corn nuggets and fried squash! Well, of course it was delicious! People tend to cook pork longer to make sure it's "safe" to eat, but it was still moist and tender. I enjoyed it. I always go to this restaurant when in town for business. The food is good and the service has always been friendly. But I have to draw the line here. While visiting last time, the waitress was helping another customer who had a cut on his finger. He was bleeding while sitting at a table. She cleaned his cut, and bandaged his wound. We watched her carefully, and she never went to wash her hands. She started filling glasses with ice and serving drinks to other customers. She never wiped or cleaned the table where the man was sitting either. Absolutely disgusting and a danger to public health. Blood born pathogens! We got up and left. Never again! read more

Popped in for dinner to this hidden gem! Meatloaf Monday night dinner special is so full of flavor. And by the looks of photos shared on Google we of course had to get the chicken fried steak. We shared the 4 veggie sides corn nuggets, fried squash, mashed potatoes & yesss the fried okra. They were out of rolls so toast was substituted & a very great substitute tasted more like an upgrade but now just has us intrigued to get a taste of the rolls!!! We'll definitely be returning for many other menu items... catfish for sure & will make sure to save room for dessert & already making plans to try out breakfast menu items is a must! We were in town staying at the Comfort Inn for a Saturday night wedding and found this place on Yelp!. We found it funny that we were at the "Daily Special" on Saturday when there wasn't a special. We enjoyed our food and the service and decided that we would return. We were only here for one evening and one morning and ate here twice and would recommend it 100%. This is one of those places you follow the locals because they know what's good. They turn tables quick but service is great. I wish we had taken pictures. read more

My colleague and I stopped in for breakfast today after reading these mostly positive reviews. We were told to sit wherever and asked for a drink order pretty quickly. About 10 minutes passed by and no drinks came. The waitstaff were in the prep area discussing their schedule for the week and their weekend plans. Today was our 3rd and last time going to the Daily Special. Upon arriving we were able to choose from many empty tables. The Diner was semi busy but they seemed to have plenty help on hand. We were finally given menus after a 10 minute wait and then ignored while I watched the waitress take orders of tables that came in way after us. When we finally put our order in we thought our long wait times were over. We had ordered 2 hamburgers nothing that should take too long. Then we watched as everyone around us got their food, then many finished their food, paid their bills and left. Finally in frustration I asked about our order and she said she go and check on it. This is the best breakfast restaurant in the area, lunch is great too, and the food servings are awesome. Get your breakfast with biscuits and gravy (included). Had a 3 egg western omelet, comes with grits or a generous portion of crispy hash browns,toast or biscuits, all for $5.99, coffee is good too. The lunch special is around 50 cents to a dollar more. The tea tasted sour side salad lettuce was old and rusty looking my liver and onions were fried with batter instead of grilled who does that in Texas!? My fried okra was good. Dinner took about 40 minites to get. With 2 other tables in the restaurant. Server didnt seem to know much about the menu options, but was very nice. Perhaps more training is necessary. OMG! My love and I were hungry and we had a long drive ahead of us, so I searched Yelp and found The Daily Special Cafe. Hey, local is usually better than the chains, so we gave them a shot. We both had Chicken Fried Steak. Tori (probably the nicest person in Alvarado) was very attentive to our every need. Long story short, the food was great, the service was even better, and the all around atmosphere was cool. We're definitely coming back. Hopefully soon! i have been eating here for at least 4 years. Most of the time food and service is really good. We have never had a problem with eating breakfast. there. I had the vegetables a few times and never good. Today I ordered corn and it tasted like came out a can and microwaved. The fries were not good either. They must have changed suppliers. I would have given this place 2 stars except for the sweet server. I ordered a grilled chicken mushroom Swiss "burger" (I was charged $2 up charge for the meat substitution, the mushrooms were canned, the "swiss" was fake, the chicken was over cooked, the bread and grilled onions were delicious). When I asked whether the sides were house made or frozen (fries, onion rings, chips) all were frozen. My husband had the daily special of meatloaf (dry, little flavor), black-eyed peas (okay) and mashed potatoes (yummy and real) with brown gravy (from a can).
