I stopped into Massimo's for lunch while returning to Winston-Salem from Charlotte. The parking situation is a little funky/limited because a significant portion of the adjacent area is being developed, into a Love's Travel Stop if the fine folks at Massimo's are to be believed. It's a smaller spot with the ordering counter and kitchen in the back and maybe seating for 26 or so. The folks behind the counter were friendly and the order process was simple. I got their sandwich special, the Buffalo Soldier. It was chicken cutlet with lettuce, tomato, blue cheese, and ranch on ciabatta. I made it a combo with chips and a soda. With tip I think the total was around $17. That was a touch more expensive than I was expecting especially with just a bag of chips on the side. The sandwich was good. Between the blue cheese and the ranch it was really creamy and most of the toppings slide off with the second bite. I don't mind a mess though! The ciabatta bread was the perfect compliment for the sandwich. It was a cute spot and I especially liked the creative sandwich names. I'd go back and try the chicken ceasar wrap next time. read more

This was our first time here and daggum was it awesome! I thought they had recently opened or something cause the place was immaculately clean. I asked and they'd been open for a decade! I also noticed their 100 health inspection rating. That is NOT easy to get, so very impressed by that. We dined in and the decor is really cute and again, everything is so clean. The sandwiches were soooo good. Nothin slaps like good sourdough. And the sauce on my turkey sandwich, to die for! Super convenient location right off the interstate. A must visit! read more

5 stars easily, hands-down! I used to live only a few minutes from Massimo's and it was a go-to for me. It's easily one of the best places to eat in Salisbury, so much so that I still miss it after moving away years ago. The Chicken Beneath My Wings sandwich and the pasta salad are potentially the best sandwich and pasta salad I've ever had. They're so fresh and flavorful, and are different from the same old sandwiches you see at every sandwich shop. That basil cream sauce on the sandwich is absolutely amazing. so I had opportunity to retrieve my trailer the other day and after cutting off a couple locks I was able to get it hooked up and on its way back home... hot, sweaty, tired, and off-put more than hungry - but hungry none the less. parking is easy no matter what you drive; kinda of a huge lot and traffic control lights to get in and out safely so yea for that! outdoor seating under umbrellas for nice weather or under a roof or inside as needed. dodging rain drops on the way in, walked to the back counter and read through the menu a few times figuring out what's for lunch before deciding on a grilled cheese sandwich plus tomato soup. got a seat and a soda and my food followed shortly. my sandwich was not so much grilled as panined complete with the char marks and everything. combination of three melty cheeses oozing out from between toasty slabs of bread, maybe just contemplate the subtle blend of swiss, cheddar and provolone. comes with corn and bean salad and a handful of chips. the extra side of tomato soup is thick but not quite bisquey, just right for dipping and sipping with a depth of flavor not found in a can. seems like everything is a little more spendy after the plague but what isn't? read more

If creative, clever names for menu items were a major part of the equation in a review, Massimo's would be a slam dunk five star place. Unfortunately, however, it's really about the food. Menu item names are near the bottom of the list of factors when writing a review. I wanted so so badly to like this place. The man who took my orders was so cheerful and nice. I gave it two chances. And it's just not that good. As I look through the other reviews, I'm almost saddened that I didn't have a similar experience. Only one other reviewer had an experience like mine. I'm not sure what the people leaving positive reviews tasted, but here's what I experienced: Classic Reuben: from the very first bite, I detected something overwhelmingly tangy and with a taste I just didn't care for. Everything was so mixed together, that I was never able to determine if it was the meat or the dressing. I suspect it was the dressing. The marble rye was fine. Chicken salad sandwich: the grilled croissant was good, but the tomatoes were pale and the chicken salad was way too creamy and had no flavor. Cole slaw: way too sweet, not finely chopped enough, and had a taste that was unlike any coleslaw I've ever tasted. And not in a good way. Potato salad: mustard based, it was decent, but seemed to me to be food service quality. The capstone of this review is the Texas Pete. I went to the counter and asked for some. My intent was to try to save the taste of potato salad and add some taste to the chicken salad. They gave me a bottle with a "best by" date of March 16, 2018. Today is December 30, 2019. Please read those last two sentences again. They gave me a bottle of Texas Pete that was a year and nine months past the best by date. I guess there's really not much else to say. read more

The food may be good, but the service and customer care is horrible! Spent over $400 on catering order, asked for plates and I was yelled at for not telling them ahead of time. Then when I went to get them, they told me it will be an additional $40 for 20 paper plates and plastic forks! I just spent $400 in lunch, and you can't provide 20 paper plates? I wanted to keep the 5 stars going, and it was good, it just wasn't great as I have had a few better meatball sandwiches at some other places in the US. The layout of the shop is nearly identical to a subway, which makes sense. They have Cheerwine at the soda fountain, so I had to try that since I've never had it actually. Would have preferred it in a bottle instead of the fountain since I don't know if they add HFCS to the syrup for fountain drinks, but I'll take it either way on the first time. Their prices are very reasonable! My meatball was good, just a little on the small side. It comes sliced in half and each half contains 2 meatballs. There was not a lot of herbs or seasonings added to the end product, nor was the cheese placed on top then baked like some other places. It was just prepared like a regular sandwich with one topping placed at a time. The bread was probably my favorite part of the overall sandwich. Very pillowy. For my side, I chose the pasta salad, which is apparently their top seller. This simple pasta has just a few ingredients and goes well with the sandwich, but you receive a small portion. If I was ever in the area again, I'd try a different sandwich and side. read more

I was traveling down I-85 and wanted a sandwich for lunch. I despise Subway and was delighted to see an independent sandwich shop listed. I was not disappointed! I got the "Classic Ruben", potato salad and a pickle. The Ruben was great. Just the right amount of corner beef, sauerkraut and dressing. Some sandwiches drop with to much dressing, but this was perfect. Potato salad was classic. It reminded me of the potato salad my mother made when I was a kid. Even the pickle was exceptional. I don't know how they did it, but most pickles are limp and not very tart. This pickle was just the opposite. It was large, crisp and tasty. To top it all off, the owner was there. You can tell he really loves his business. He was friendly and working hard. He also came out and cleaned each table as people left. You don't get that at the chains. Needless to say, I wish this place was near my home and I'll definitely be stopping here when I'm in the area again. read more

We had stopped at this little sandwich several years ago when traveling south and were delighted with our meals. This visit is a true disappointment. My husband had the BLT and I had a Ruben. How can you mess up a BLT???!!! The meat on the Ruben tasted past a "good date" the Swiss cheese was mostly missing, and the 1000 Island dressing was sweet! Yuck. We tossed 95% of our food. For drinks we had a strawberry banana smoothie and a chocolate shake. It seems that ALL the ingredients were the lowest quality possible. The shake was watery and had no signs of real milk/cream. Maybe powdered milk? It was not drinkable. The smoothie was watery ... maybe made with ice chunks, a couple of frozen strawberries and banana flavoring. Customer's beware! read more

Tonight I made my second visit to Massimo's and got the RoastBeef of Burden- I asked for it cold for take out - and it is a generous sandwich. Well, I decided to eat it cold at home. I prefer a cold sandwich and it was likely the best roast beef sandwich I've had in years. Blows Jersey Mike's away. The beef was so tender and with this cheese and horseradish sauce, mmmmm. Massimo and his team have taken on sandwich construction as an art. And they are the Rembracassomozhoven's of sandwich art. Rembracasso = Rembrandt + Picasso + Mozart + Beethoven. I went back on day two for lunch and for dinner. At dinner time I arrived 20 minutes before closing and they encouraged me to sit down and take my time to enjoy my meal. You will find most of your favorite sandwiches, as well they will custom build the sandwich of your choice. If you aren't sure what to select just pick whatever they have for sandwich of the day.
