I really enjoyed this place. It so much reminded me of a place I used to visit on vacation every year with my grandparents. I have looked high and low for something like that and could never find that quality and feel until now. The service was amazing. So friendly and nice with good suggestions. The portion size was way bigger than what I thought I would get, and that's a good thing. I liked the salt and pepper batter. The food was very delicious and took me back in time. The place was decorated very nice with really cool hand painted scenes that make you feel like you are looking out over a bay. If I ever make it back, you can guarantee I will eat here. read more

Better fried seafood than the supposed world famous Calabash seafood establishments and yes I can say that with certainty because that's where I have lived for the past 3 years. Decent prices for the old school fish camp style dining. I like they offer Salt and Pepper batter as an option and has a couple more side options than the cheapest fries Sysco has to offer and Cole slaw unlike the Calabash restaurants that serve bland batter and only cheap fries or a day old baked potato as sides. Blue bay seems to have a wider variety of feedings as well than some of the beach restaurants. read more

Went to Blue Bay tonight to celebrate a birthday. Got there at 6pm. There were about 5 tables with customers. We were seated by the hostess. Then we waited.....5 minutes go by, still waiting....10 minutes....waiting. No waitress has even come by since we were seated. 15 minutes and still waiting. By this time I am trying to flag a waitress. Waving my arms, staring at them, even calling out to one at a table close by. Nothing. Finally at 20 minutes, I picked up my phone and called the restaurant. The hostess picked up the phone and asked how she could help. I asked if there was a reason I had not been addressed by a waitress after 20 minutes after being seated. Told the hostess which table I was at and 2 minutes later, there was Finally a waitress over at the table. She was apologetic and claimed she wasn't our waitress but would be taking care of us. At this point, I didn't care if she was or wasn't our waitress. It wasn't like the restaurant was busy. She did bring us some potato wedges along with some hushpuppies. The wedges were fair, but they were free as a token for ignoring us. On the menu it states 2 bowls of hush puppies before being charged. The first bowl was emptied and we asked for a 2nd....never received. I ended up getting the baby shrimp and husband wanted the hamburger steak, but because they didn't have gravy, he ended up getting steak. He had to put steak sauce on the steak for any type of flavor. The shrimp were OK. I have had better at other restaurants. These were tough and a number of the still had the black vein. I've heard good things about this restaurant so you can imagine my disappointment when I tried it out and the first thing I see underneath our table is trash and food crumbs. The restaurant in general seemed dirty with food on the floor and crumbs in the booth seats. The food seemed mediocre, as the fried catfish I got was soaked in grease looked soggy. The portions sizes are way off, portions are small but priced high. A whole flounder costs $20.00! A normal large filet costed around $17. The deviled crab also didn't taste the way a devil crab should, it fell apart easily and was no good. The fries were alright, but how could you mess up on fries, right? The staff was very polite however and were very hospitable. Another complaint I have is the temperature in the restaurant, it can be a little warm in there despite having ac so wear light clothing, definitely no long sleeves are needed. Good value and service! The ambiance was cute and appropriate for a seafood restaurant - bright nautical theme and pretty murals. Upon entering the pretty lobby, you almost forget you're in piedmont NC and not on the coast! For peak time on a Friday night, the restaurant was full of customers but we were seated immediately. Our server was excellent and went above and beyond - attentive and polite without being intrusive. She brought multiple refills and checked on us several times. The food was served quickly and hot and the taste was great and the portions were huge! We ordered the small bite-sized shrimp and they were mildly seasoned and not at all greasy! The baked potatoes and vegetables were also good. The hush puppies were delicious! There was a surprising amount of variety on the menu as well, including some desserts that looked homemade that we will have to save room for next time. The only small issue was the music was a little loud and we weren't expecting that at a seafood restaurant, but it wasn't invasive and wouldn't prevent us from returning again. You must rate a restaurant based on what it is not what you thought it might be. Blue bay is a great fried fish joint like Libby Hill or mayflower... only better. The service has been great every time. The food is great, always comes hot out of the fryer and onto your table(probably after straining it a bit). The hush puppies keep coming and are pretty darn good. And all the sides, tho typical, are good as well. If it's your first time going I would recommend fries, onion rings or baked(or sweet) potato; they do the traditional stuff really well. The fried okra seems a little bland and the steamed veggies are only ok everything else I've tried has been awesome. read more

I had never visited this location but had been a frequent customer to the other location in Salisbury which seemed to have closed down for lunch. I ordered a combination plate, perch and pc shrimp. The meal was adequate but I was astonished by the decrease in serving size. I received 2 slivers of perch about the size of fingers and a handful of baby shrimp, hardly enough to cover a small plate; maybe 1/3 of what they used to give for $12. It looked especially skimpy when I removed the baked potato which took up half the plate. It made me sad. This place used to be known for good serving size, but I guess like many businesses; just giving you less for the same money. Shame b/c the food was pretty good; missed opportunity for 5 stars. Just hurts to know that the owners either don't know that we don't see what they are doing or worse, they don't care. read more
