I called to ask Phil, a technician, to replace my niece's battery in her SUV. It was assumed her battery needed replacement because she could not start the vehicle without a jump. Phil looked at the situation and honestly stated that the battery was just fine -- it had slipped and needed to be secured. Also, he did a very thorough investigation of her vehicle -- all free of charge. He filled her tires with air and was amazing to her. My family and I have been patronizing Master AutoTech (formerly Master Muffler) since about 1975...back when I talked my Dad into getting dual exhausts on our '72 Buick Centurion 455-4 sedan at their 3865 S State Street location...and I've patronized them ever since. I had my '96 Bronco taken care of at the Sandy Location many times, and when I bought my 2006 Mazda 6 sedan, I was referred to Phil Baillargeon out in WVC. I patronized Phil there for many years, and then followed him to the 6700 S State Location when he moved there. Finally, when Phil transferred to this Main Street location downtown, I started to see him there for my Utah State emissions inspection, and have come back each year since. I do so because Phil is a car-guy, and understands how to fix them...and as he's done on my Mazda sedan many times, performed repairs to make sure it runs clean and passes emissions each year without fail. He's direct, honest, and handles the inspections like a pro. And again, just today, exhibited his patience with me and my 19 year old car...and got it to pass the emissions inspection. I am happy to give a 5 Star rating to Phil Baillargeon, the manager at Master Autotech located at 690 S Main St., SLC for the excellent work his shop performed on my car this week. I had what I thought was a blown muffler on my 2011 Nissan Versa. Phil did a free diagnostic test which included a full inspection on all fluids, the shocks, brakes, AC, and major engine components for FREE! It wasn't the muffler that was bad, it was a manifold gasket which broke loose. Phil gave me a reasonable quote, and honored it as agreed. The service was fast, and it solved the problem. I was referred to PHIL's shop by 2 other people who were happy with his reliability, professionalism, fair pricing, honesty and integrity, and his incredible knowledge of cars and technology in general. I am a veteran of the Navy and it gave me great comfort to know that Phil had served 6 years as an Air Force Officer in the capacity of lead technology trainer and technician at different AF bases. That's a +++ on any person's resume. He also owns a super-charged Corvette which he races and is a FAV on car roadshow tours. I found this location to have my daughters truck's brakes looked at as she sited they were feeling 'squishy'. After a short phone call I felt comfortable sending her there. As it turned out I actually had a trip that ended in SLC and was able to complete the appointment with her and help with her first time auto repair visit. My assumption was confirmed. This place took great care of her and was through and efficient in the recommended repairs. Price was below what I was expecting as an added bonus. It also good to note that I was working with a specific time schedule the day of the appointment and they did not disappoint in completing in the time they notified me it would take. Across from a Traks Sta and close to town makes the transportation access convenient. I cannot recommend this place more! I just lived here and they have been a godsend. My parents came out in a camper and it was having some issues. They took it here and said that the service was timely, honest, and they felt good about them. A few months later and my car starts making noise. I dropped it off and they were very honest with the plan of attack. They laid out what had to be done now for safety and what could wait a little bit. As someone who has just moved here and incurred quite a few moving expenses, the honesty is much appreciated. The staff is polite, they listen, and their waiting area is clean and quiet. Brought my Mercedes here for a coil replacement three years ago and they charged me $500. They replaced one without telling me that when one goes, the others are probably not far behind. A few days later, there was an issue with the second coil. I took it to a Mercedes specialist where they informed me that it's best to have all the coils replaced when there is an issue with one, especially when the car is at 100,000 miles. The Mercedes specialist replaced the five other coils for a total of $1200. Last week my car started misfiring. I took it to the Mercedes specialist that I've been going to consistently for the last three years. The scan showed the first coil replacement done by master muffler was the one misfiring. When they pulled it out, it was a cheap coil with no brand name on it. The Mercedes specialist replaced with a Bosch, ignition coil and all is well now. If you have a European car, take it to a specialist, this crew does not have adequate experience and will cost you more in the long run. read more

I was with my two kids returning from Moab to Salt Lake City airport to fly back to Michigan. I thought of the rental Jeep with gas about 10 miles from the airport and as I'm traveling towards the airport my front left tire suddenly lost pressure and was dropping rapidly. I pulled over to a gas station to fill it with air and by the time I got there the tire was completely flat. I filled it with air and then drove to Master auto tech a couple blocks away. My son called them and they quickly got us in immediately and changed out the tire with the spare and got us on our way so we didn't miss our flight. And then after all that they charged me nothing! These guy are no good. Plus they overcharge as well. Came with a muffler that was already premade and all they needed to do was tweak it or bend it a little more since my rear bumper is different from where the original muffler came from. They weren't able to do it. They had to redo it twice but still weren't able to put it on to they way I wanted it to. They did NOT even bend the pipe that's why it's not on the way I wanted it to. They basically cut off my stock muffler and welded a small piece of straight pipe and from my cat back onto the premade muffler. Pics show proof as well. The muffler tips are sticking out if you look from the side, it's a little too much from my liking. Plus they charged $85 just to weld on a premade muffler. That's a little too much. I mean if they were to make a muffler and bend it from scratch and weld on mufflers then yes the price would be reasonable but no, got ripped off. Look for other shops and shop around prior going to this place and its surrounding branches. Also on the side note that I noticed later on the day as I was washing the car. They chipped my wheels rim. I've been super careful with my two month old wheels and have not damaged or curbed them and this happens. Their ghetto rack I guess must've hit my wheels rim. read more

The customer service here is absolutely outstanding! I have been coming here for all my car repairs since I moved to SLC and they are very honest about what work needs to be done and offer very reasonable pricing. My car engine died suddenly a couple weeks ago and I took it to a dealership for a price estimate. They quoted me at $6500 + labor for a new (used) engine. I had it towed to Master Muffler for a second opinion and they quoted me at around $3400, and they didn't even charge a diagnostics fee. Unfortunately I can't afford to have it replaced, so I opted to try and sell my car instead. Vic and Bruce have been especially helpful with all this, as they have allowed me to keep my car at the shop and have even offered to help interested buyers take a look at the car. I'm taken aback at how friendly and genuinely helpful Master Muffler is. They have made this stressful process infinitely easier, especially during a global pandemic, and I would recommend them to everyone. (Also, if you're looking to get rid of a junked car, a small but important tidbit about Master Muffler is that they buy junked cars off of people and fix them up to give to charity!) read more

I am not going to lie, I have had some bad experiences in mechanic shops. Because of this, my Jeep has not been getting taken care of like she should. I fix minor things but I am scared to mess with things like the engine or drivetrain. Especially when it comes to tires, I have had some bad experiences to the point that I haven't trusted a lot of people with something as simple as a tire rotation. I have also had mechanic shops tell me I have every leak on the planet and that I need to pay for things like an $80 air filter. So my front tires were bald, my engine was kicking back P0128, and one of my tire sensors was bad. With the tire sensor, the light had been on since I blew a tire in August but the mechanic shop never fixed it and I wasn't sure who I could trust that was going to be any different. I finally found someone that did an exceptional job!! Don at Master Muffler was someone that I trusted and he was willing to help me get everything sorted out. He checked out my engine to make sure everything was good there. Originally, we were planning on just doing a tire rotation but Don was very upfront that the tires were too bad and needed to be replaced. As it turns out, the tires were a defective set and were peeling on the inside and had all kinds of residue. He also replaced the sensor that needed to be replaced. Throughout my experience with Don, I appreciated his transparency and honesty with my vehicle. Don did not cut a single corner and treated my Jeep like his own. He was a great advocate for me; he was able to get me two new tires within a few hours and everything came out to a very fair price. The rest of the staff was awesome as well, they didn't make me feel bad once, despite the rough shape my tires were in. Even though I live in Utah county, I plan on taking my Jeep all the way up to this Master Muffler location for all my vehicle needs going forward; they really are worth the drive and I have never had such a wonderful experience. read more

I'm new in town. So, am I being hustled? Took my Subaru for some welding on the exhaust tubing, and it was completed in no time, with no hassle. Vic took my all my information and explained what they would do and let me know about the "damage" it would do to my pocketbook and car. Within a few hours, a little over $140.00, I was on my way. I'm pleased to say, that this place was a great place to stumble upon (I was recommended to them by the dealership of my car). Vic assured me that they do all of the same repairs and service on vehicles, just like the dealership -- but cheeper! :D I believe this big/small business is the place to return for car issues. And if you are reading this, and wondering if these folks would do your car justice -- I say, "yes". I got a phone call the day after service (Vic, left a message), thanking me for coming to their shop and if there were any questions, to please call. I also got a follow-up e-mail from him with coupons attached. Again, thanking me for my business. Not only was he courteous in person (as well as the other tech in behind the counter) and did his best to help me (and others that were in the waiting room), but he was thoughtful enough to reach out after service was rendered. (My doctor didn't even do that after a double hernia operation. And I'm still waiting for them to do a follow-up call/e-mail. Two years! --Enough of me). Am I being hustled? Nah. i am a 62 year old lady who was just thrown out of this shop by manager because i caught him in several lies of which i have multiple proof. i have spent thousands at this location and the manager told me i was a list, i haven't spent a dime there. i will give more details so you can understand the brevity of how unprofessional and poorly ai have been treated. i wish i did not have to give one star. thousands of dollars at this location abs he throws a 62 year old woman out if his shop. his anger only proves his guilt. the understaff follow managers lead. they refused to give me corporate or regional manager info. thousands spent in the past few years to be thrown out at 62 like a dig. cuz i caught him in his lies. please boycott this shop for treating elderly so badly. read more

Brought my van in for a overheating issue a year ago. They said I needed a new radiator. My old radiator was less than 3 years old. First time a went up the canyon it overheated. When I looked under the hood I still had my old radiator cap. Put a new cap on and the problem was solved (after spending $900). Tried to give them another chance but when I pulled in the parking lot one of the mechanics screamed at me because he needed to pull out of a bay. I pulled forward so that he could get out and he parked his car in the middle of the exit and put up a cone so that I could not move. When I tried to say something to him he ignored me and walked off. I had to ask someone in the office to let me out. The service writers are nice enough, but it takes one hot head to ruin your experience and I will not go back. read more

I went in after my car was shaking hitting high speeds knowing it could potentially be my transmission, drive unit, alignment or many other costly possibilities (this was all provided by google, I know nothing about cars). These guys fixed my alignment and something else around my tires for a much better price than I was braced for. Also, I had them check my tires and after years of being told I have to replace all 4, he told me the back two were in great shape and truly it was fine to just replace the front. I was in SLC for a day driving through moving from Phoenix to Seattle. My car was making a slight noise underneath it when I accelerated to a certain speed and they were able to squeeze me in. Before I left Phoenix, my mechanic checked out my car and told me I was fine. Don who looked at my car told me that I needed new belt tensioner and that my belt could possibly fall off and also said that my Universal joint in my drive shaft was near the end and that I shouldn't drive past Park city with my car. After talking with Kelly, he told me that the drive shaft could fall apart and potentially flip my car on the freeway. Which I know is a true fact but my car was showing no symptoms of a faulty universal joint besides rust (Don showed me which was nice to be under my car) and no noise from my belt. They wanted $1600 to fix it and urged me not to drive it. I called my mechanic and he told me to take it to the dealership. I left feeling as if because I came alone and I'm female, and that I was in a rush that they could scare me into fixing my car. I took it to the dealership and they said everything looked fine and I made it back to Seattle without any issues It looks like these guys are great with Mufflers and Brakes but I just wanted share my story because it was very unnecessary and I wouldn't want anyone else to go through what I did if they don't know a few things about cars. I highly suggest getting a second opinion if you feel some uncertainty. read more

I received the recommendation to come here from a girl at O'Rielly Auto Parts. She told me to ask for Don and that he would be able to help me with my washer fluid pump issue. I showed up without an appointment, found Don, and without hesitation he took my keys and got to work. HE WAS AWESOME. I have a VW Jetta and a lot of places won't work on them, but Don was so helpful and kind and fixed my pump in no time. I am new to the area and I am so happy I found a great car shop, I will be a customer for LIFE. Thank you to everyone at Master Muffler for being so awesome, helpful, and informative! Also, while I was there, I overheard a phone conversation that I was very impressed with. A customer had brought in their vehicle for brake service but it ended up not needing new brakes. The service guy called the customer to let them know that he didn't think the car needed new brakes, and to come back in a while when the brake pads had more wear. How awesome is that? I was across the street from Master Muffler when it was pointed out to me that I was not just leaking but spraying fluid from my engine area. I stopped at jiffy lube and they looked at it and scratched their heads. I left and came to Master Muffler. They were very friendly and, very importantly, did not look confused. They are working on it as I write this. They are quick and friendly. I am very brutal on businesses with bad customer service. These guys seem to go above the norm. Good people. I took my Toyota into the Mark Miller dealership and they diagnosed a faulty muffler, a slipped heat shield and a couple of things with the exhaust system. They quoted me at $1300! I took my Toyota over to Master Muffler and they diagnosed the same items and quoted me for $345 and treated me so well. My car no longer makes crazy sounds and runs so smoothly. The new management isn't all that bad but it's definitely not the same. They are friendly but at my last visit I also got the feeling that they were trying to talk me into more repairs than I actually needed.
