It gives you a super intense work-out and I always feel so stressful and relaxed after (even if I dread coming here sometimes after a long, hard day). The teachers/employees here are super nice and they will walk you through everything. The students that join the classes are also very welcoming. Do not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and do not be afraid to ask questions and push your limit. They're all supportive and they want to push you to succeed. They won't make you do more that you can't. Definitely give this place a try if you're trying to look for some fun way to work out! P.S., they have classes for kids too. I always see kids having a blast and leaving this place happy.

Excellent program…read more My son (now 9 .. started at age 8) tested karate during a 4 week after school program held at his school in September 2016; he really enjoyed it so he signed up for another 6 weeks at the karate center itself. He then decided this is something he wants to stick with and we signed up for a year. He has now started his 2nd year. The students are broken up in different time slots based on ages and belt levels. It's an open schedule, so it's up to you how often your child comes (meaning, there may be 4 time slots scheduled for your child's group, but you can choose to show up 1-4 times .. I try to bring my son twice a week). The students work on their skills under senseis. There is stripe testing every few weeks until your child reaches 3 stripes (on their belt) and then they move up to their next belt level. There is a belt ceremony held on a Saturday that is about an hour long for all of the kids (or adults, graded separately) being tested for their next belt. If your child can't make it, they will do the test at the end of a regular class and present your child their next belt and certificate. The kids feel so proud when they move up to a new belt and the senseis give them the acknowledgement they deserve. There is also sparring here that is optional at the children's age level. If you choose, they can buy sparring equipment and come to a separate class for that. My son's confidence tremendously improved since starting karate. I'm not sure if it's a coincidence, but they seem to be related for sure. The senseis also sit around with the kids after class and usually will have a word of the week in which they will discuss what it means and allow the kids to give personal examples of it. For example, I've seen them discuss the words "discipline" and "integrity". This is one of the more expensive activities my son has done, but I find it valuable in many ways .. like I said, it's not just the skill he is learning but his sense of self and confidence. There are different payment options but I choose to pay annually in full which gives a little discount. The total for a year about $1325 and it costs $40 per belt, which is every 2 month or so .. give or take .. One negative: it always smells like feet in there because well let's face it .. 20 or so kids with their shoes off and sweaty piggies is bound to stink!

Currently Coed Muay Thai is offered Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturdays with the addition of a ladies only class on Wednesday and Friday. I have learned so much and I can feel my body becoming leaner and stronger with the cardio that Muay Thai offers. I have also been doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for about under 2 months and this is something I do not regret starting up. BJJ is taught by blackbelt Joshua Ketry and he was born to teach as I fell in love with BJJ after my first class. BJJ is offered Monday - Thursday and Saturday mornings. BJJ is a ground type of martials arts that deals with a lot of grappling to defend yourself against an attacker. The idea is that a smaller, weaker, person can defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, person by using techniques to achieve submissions by chokes and locks. I take all the classes as I feel incredibly empowered as a female to learn something that can help me if I ever find myself in a situation that would call for my BJJ training. The instructors are top notch and the students are there to learn and help other students achieve the same thing there are, to be better than you were yesterday. I love that they have lockers with locks in the main workout area (you do need to bring your own lock for the locker room), although currently many of the lockers are broken so I hope they repair them soon. I've taken quite a few good classes here although the classes do tend to get crowded so you really have to show up early to make sure you have a spot. We also enjoy swimming both in the lap pool and with our son in the zero depth pool. The one frustration I have had is with the adventure room. This is a great indoor playground which my toddler son loves. However, unlike the rest of the facilities, it is covered in dust. I worry that if they aren't maintaining this area, not only is it covered in germs from the children, but they may not be regularly inspecting the safety of the structure. Overall, it seems like a safe playspace but anytime you have kids climbing at such high heights, a piece of broken equipment could become a serious danger. I always watch my son closely and check out the equipment myself while he's playing. The other problem with this area is that although there is an app with schedules, it is frequently incorrect when it comes to the adventure room. The open hours for children under five are very limited and as you can imagine, it is very difficult to get a toddler out of the house, bring him to his favorite place only to have to tell him that it is unexpectedly closed. I have brought up this issue to the staff multiple times, but it still has not been addressed. In general, I would say the Y is worth it, especially if you were planning on utilizing all of the facilities

I started the 3 month beginner class in August at the Buffalo location and it has been a great experience. For me it is mindful meditation, with joint stretching and balance benefits thrown in. I'm finding that seriously trying to learn this routine is far different from the one off tai chi hour that I've done at a resort or camp, the specificity of hand, foot and body position ..... and trying to remember them in this 20 minute routine ..... is making learning golf technique seem like a breeze. They also have strong Health Recovery Program for anyone who might need help with injury recovery or balance.
