This gentleman had the full tasting menu, then called his wife to describe it to her.

Amazing! My friend and I spent 10 days in Denmark and Sweden and this was our favorite meal by a long shot. But before you make a reservation some warnings: 1. Don't go if you're not a foodie. There's plenty of great food in Stockholm. Mathias Dahlgren is a special foodie treat. 2. Don't go if you are worried about how much you are spending. It is very expensive, especially if you order wine or drinks. The location is the Grand Hotel in a beautiful front room facing the harbor. I called and a made a reservation for the same night -- at 8:00 pm. (20:00 to the Swedes.) We chose to sit at the bar so we could talk to the bartender and watch the servers complete the final preparation. I can't remember our waiter's name. I wish I could; she was terrific. We started with an Old Fashioned and a Negroni. Excellent. Among the extraordinary dishes we had were - peas and cauliflower - a fabulous salad of greens, shoots and beets - potatoes and truffles. Extraordinary! - crayfish Bam! We also had wine for my friend and a beer for me. All in all this was a glorious meal on a glorious evening that was the highlight of a glorious visit to Stockholm.

Matbaren is a great space that feels hip yet cozy and relaxed. Favorites of the night were the steamed pork bun, seared tenderloin, and the passion fruit dessert. The pork bun was a nice surprise as usually most places that do this style have more Asian flavors but the cumin/jalapeno was a nice touch. The seared tenderloin, oh my gosh! I do not think I have had meat this tender and delicious before. Must try! Steamed pork bun, jalapenos, cumin, coriander Charcoal grilled pig from Onsberg, truffle, cabbage, hazelnut Seared tenderloin from Svartadalen White asparagus & artichokes, macadamia nuts, lemon, browned butter Variation of passion fruit & cape gooseberry, mint, coriander, lime Peach & raspberries, pistachios, vanilla

Located inside Stockholm's Grand Hôtel and the perennial recipient of One Michelin Star it was for lunch that two guests sat down at Matbaren, one of three eateries owned and operated by Chef Mathias Dahlgren whose Rutabaga stands directly across the way. Still one of Sweden's top Toques, a Bocuse d'Or win in 1997 and several Cookbooks making Dahlgren a household name while at the same time remaining a popular recommendation amongst gourmet travelers, it was after navigating the extravagant Hotel's corridors that two guests were seated at a hightop along the far wall, various styles of tables and chairs giving the room character while the Staff is pleasant and accommodating. Finding wooden boxes containing menus, bags, silverware and glasses at each seat, a unique arrangement that at times makes one feel as though they are eating off a "lunch tray," it was in the brown paper that Crisps of Flax and Rye were found, these as well as warm Spelt Sourdough each good on their own but even more delicious when slathered with salted Butter reportedly churned less than thirty minutes away. Unpretentious despite its accolades, the fact that Matbaren was apparently at one time a more casual way to experience Mathias Dahlgren's cuisine than an eponymous Michelin 2-stared spot in the same Hôtel likely part of that reason, it was after lengthy deliberation that the decision was made to order one 495 SEK Lunch Prix Fixe plus four additional items a la carte, a trio of Appetizers arriving after perhaps fifteen minutes all simple and delicious with the fresh Herring amidst two types of Eggs a pleasant surprise to someone who typically considers it "too fishy." Happily finding the Croquettes stuffed with Rillettes rather than filleted Fish, the smokiness balanced by tangy Tartar Sauce, it was with the Lamb Sausage gone in one bite each that second courses were fired, the lightly seared local Pork supple and rich compared to American where most kitchens overcook the Meat while a dish of Swedish Morels and tender Asparagus dressed in umami and acid suggested Dahlgren's recently-opened Vegetable-centric Restaurant likely warrants attention. In need of an afternoon pick-me-up, several miles and meals already logged plus more to follow, it was alongside a Double Espresso and Ice that two Desserts were presented, the Prix Fixe's Rhubarb & Strawberry Crumble beautifully composed with sweet, sour, crunchy, creamy, hot and cold all accounted for while Matbaren's famous Baked Wild Chocolate from Bolivia charted a similar course by way of not-quite-molten Cake playing off Sour Cream, Toffee and candied Nuts. Rounding out a very pleasant Meal with Mignardises, both the dainty Orange Caramel and Madeline-like Almond Cookies again speaking well of Matbaren's Bread and Pastry Team, it was with a fairly modest bill paid that another look at the hotel was taken, a sign welcoming guests for some sort of White Guide Conference explaining why both of Dahlgren's Restaurants were fully booked for the evening and perhaps portending good news for the Chef in next year's edition of Scandinavia's premier dining publication.

This is an excellent restaurant! One of my top 3 choices in Stockholm! Service: 5, ambience: 5, food: 4 value: 5 For a Michelin star restaurant, my three course lunch (including free bread, coffee and petit fours - which were all excellent despite being free) costs around $50USD. If you are used to NYC prices, it is a steal!! Since menu changes all the time, doesn't make sense to comment on each dish I had. But I'll tell you this: each dish was executed perfectly. Even the free bread, coffee, and petit fours were top notch! The only thing I think they could improve is bringing more innovation to the food - to create new taste profiles people have never experienced - which I think Lilia Ego and the like are currently better at.

We had booked Matbaren in advance before coming to Stockholm and had been looking forward to it given the positive reviews it gets - and it did not disappoint. The restaurant itself is laid back and has an excellent atmosphere - not stuffy/pretentious at all which is too common in Michelin starred restaurants. The service isn't perhaps as top notch as you'd get at some other fine dining establishments - for example, we didn't have waiting staff topping up our water continually etc. The amount of food we ordered was on recommendation of our server, who suggested we order 1 dish per person, then continue to order 1 more after each until we were satisfied. We had a cheese starter then, 1 ox sausage in bun, 2 steamed pork buns, 1 potatoes & truffle, 1 gyoza with mushrooms and 1 baked wild chocolate for dessert. All of the dishes were excellent but the ox sausage, steamed pork buns and chocolate dessert were our favourites. Overall, we didn't find it as expensive as others suggested and felt it was decent value for money for a Michelin starred meal in an expensive city. We would definitely eat here again - expect creative, flavoursome dishes with a laidback atmosphere and service!

We purposely planned a long layover in Stockholm for this treat. It lived up to its reputation and so much more! To start, our server was one of the most personable and attentive I've ever experienced. We didn't make reservations since it's relatively easy to get a spot at the bar - and this turned out to be the best way to experience Matbaren. Loved watching the (sous) chefs work. We ordered: * tartar of topside * gyoza with mushrooms * steamed bun "pork adobo" * seared Swedish squid * butter fried turbot toast * baked wild chocolate from Bolivia Of course, the menu changes, but all that to say the menu is eclectic and creative! Each plate was a playful presentation with delightful flavors. I can't stop thinking about that gyoza and mushrooms. 100% would return at the next opportunity!

Two stereotypes about Scandinavia - one smashed and one reconfirmed on my first day dinner in Stockholm. This restaurant confirms that Scandinavian food is not boring. Great mix of traditional Skandinavian and international flavors. Visually a treat as well. But yes it is expensive. Take what you think you'd pay in the US and double it. So, yes you can get food of similar quality for a lot less but not with the Swedish blend. The seared Skrei was cooked perfectly (though a bit strong with the mayo).and the adobo chicken bun scrumptious.

Boy am I glad braised pork steam buns are making a comeback. We can probably thank Momofuku for the more recent trend, but after I rediscovered them at Pluto in Copenhagen a couple months ago, I simply cannot get enough. You know when something you taste is so good that you forget all form of decorum and blurt out with half masticated food in your mouth that this is the most amazing thing ever? Who cares if it's a Michelin star restaurant and I'm with business colleagues. Some things just really deserve bad table manners in the form of enthusiastic celebration, and if I wasn't already celebrating by being given my own personal serving of The Most Delicious Butter Ever to eat with my brown paper bag packaged knäckebröd, and to pair with a fantastically delicious glass of crisp and fresh white wine from the Loire Valley, I was definitely celebrating after my first bite of braised pork. Icing on the cake? Dessert (yes, there's an intentional pun in there somewhere). Pudding made from milk from Säby Farm, decorated with creams and ice creams and other caramelized treats. As an added bonus because I think my waitress just enjoyed watching me squeal with joy over the good food I was being served, I got an extra bowl of some delicious treats that I actually had to stop eating for fear of discovering the threshold of too much of a good thing in public. Prices are steep (nothing in comparison to Matsalen next door), but totally worth it.

Visited this hip restaurant to experience enlightened and modern Swedish cuisine based on the best seasonal produce and products available. There are proper tables, but, I was seated at their 'food bar' that afforded a nice view of the open kitchen concept. The menu is divided up into creative headings for dishes: I chose to focus most of my attention ordering both dishes on offer in their "From the Plant World" section, as well as their amazingly good steamed beef buns from their "From Other Countries" department! Details in each dish matter most here; each dish is expertly constructed, letting the ingredients speak for themselves. The food is served tapas style, one dish after another, no rush, and you order what you like until you feel satisfied. Wines by the glass were all excellent and attractively priced. The service was polished, confident, and still very welcoming and warm (they even surprised me with a sample of alcoholic ginger beer from Scotland, to go along with my beef buns, with compliments, skål!). Finishing with my espresso, I was served delightful petit fours - another nice touch. Details matter here. The design of the restaurant is modern Swedish, cool, a bit off-the-wall and colourful. What is there not to like about Matbaren? This place is a champion of good taste.

My husband and I were so lucky to have gotten a reservation here last minute. Make sure you book a table as early as you know you will be in Stockholm. Or, plan a trip to Stockholm just for this restaurant. The ambiance is very modern and relaxed. The kitchen is open. Tables are very close to one another so you could have conversations with tables nearby. And when everyone is so happy to be eating, this sort of happens naturally. So, for all of the introverts of the world, rest up and be prepared to converse with neighbors over your collective joy and delicious food. The menu is made up of small dishes which you are to order one at a time, a la carte. The pace of the meals is as fast as you can gobble up one at a time. You can't go wrong with any dish on there. I tried things I don't usually eat by the recommendation of the diners next to us, and was just delighted. I did not expect to be blown away by an Asian-style taco in Stockholm, or a roasted barbecue pork sandwich (being from Texas). Just come to the restaurant with a big appetite and leave happy. If you're not in the mood for alcohol (I wasn't), try the Fentiman's for a lightly sweetened bubbly beverage. Whenever I go to a nice restaurant I take pictures of all of the food, but I was so enmeshed in the deliciousness that I didn't capture the dessert. The dessert was divine as well. I would come back to Stockholm just for this restaurant. Oh, and a perfect date night is preceding this restaurant with a date at the Spa in the Grand Hotel. I felt like it was my honeymoon all over again.

5 course selection was excellent. Hamachi and reindeer sashimi was very fresh and flavorful. Lamb with grilled mayo (yes the mayo was grilled) and chimichurri was rich without being too much. White asparagus was cooked perfectly, and the cod was sous vided to perfection. We substituted the chocolate desert, and it was excellent as well.

Set menu, great wine, this was our favorite meal of the trip to Stockholm. Carl, our main server and his help provided attentive and informative service. This one star Michelin place will be two shortly. Book in advance. Nothing but great memories here!

Mathias Dahlgren's Matbaren is definitely one of the best restaurants in Stockholm. Swedish flare at its best. More laid back than the swankier other Dahlgren restaurant beside it-- Matsalen--it serves up innovative yet comforting a la carte dishes. Everything from the bread basket, to dessert was perfectly executed and outstanding. Two of the dishes I tried were even vegetarian, and they simply blew me away. We were seated by the bar which gave us a nice view of the kitchen and the staff at work. Food is served in wooden "cafeteria style" trays which goes hand-in-hand with the concept of Matbaren. Reservations go quickly so make sure to book in advance. The service was truly impeccable. The waitress working the tables around the bar was really knowledgeable and her suggestions really matched what I expressed I liked. I highly recommend the following dishes: -Deep fried Potatoes with Baked Egg and Chantrelle Mushrooms -Beet salad with Hazelnuts and Jerusalem Artichoke -Game from Ostermalm with Anchovies -Course Ground rib eye with Comte creme -Farmer's milk pudding with Cloudberry At the end of our meal, we received complimentary delicious Madeleines as a parting snack. What a sweet ending.

We had just arrived that afternoon and were walking around our hotel to look for an early dinner. The dining room is lovely but not too stuffy or formal. We ordered the brown bread for starters, along with some wine and beer. I ordered the Arctic char (parsnip, chili, hazelnuts, browned butter and a soy glaze) and Paul G. went with the meatballs (hand-rolled and with cream sauce, mashed potatoes, lingonberries and pickled cucumber). We had the traditional Swedish meatball dish a few more times during the trip and they all came with the same components, but Bistro Bestick's was my fave. The sauce was heavier, velvety and creamy, and the potatoes were oh so fluffy. The berries were tart and fresh. I loved my fish, too... the hazelnuts, brown butter and soy were such a bright, unexpected combination. I enjoyed every bite. Don't sleep on dessert here! I couldn't even finish my dinner but still wanted to try the chocolate rum cake (salty caramel sauce, roasted peanuts, vanilla ice cream and crispy sesame) and what a delightful flavor explosion! It was beautifully presented and the sesame "cracker" on top was the perfect contrast to all the sweetness. I'd highly recommend BB!

Apparently I'm not the only one - since last I visited it is now placed on Michelin's Bib Gourmand list for Stockhom, and rightfully so. Upon entry you'll already feel a lovely blend of Swedish design and quirky aesthetic choices that signal you're in for a good experience. While the interior is tasteful, there are elements like chairs being mounted on the walls and a couple of the seatings being perched up on mounts near the front windows. Everyone who greets you and serves are very delightful, charming, and often funny, which really sets the tone wonderfully. The food itself is on the heartier side but all really well considered and delicious. We had the see bass ceviche with tomatoes (fresh, tangy, and complex) and iberico ham with parmesan (basic but very high quality ingredients), both of which were really delicious. The complimentary bread rolls and butter were really delightful, cooked with a bubbly crunchy texture that was delightful to chew. The main courses included their classic pork confit dish as well as another ibercio pork entree with white beans, cilantro, and chorizo - both were savory and very meat-forward but the star of the show was absolutely those white beans which were prepared in a very savoury sauce. Our total bill including a very good bottle of pinot noir from Napa Valley the bill came to around $240 USD. For the quality of the food, service, and attention to style, as well as the distinction of being a recognized place to eat in Stockholm, I would definitely recommend this place to any traveler who wants to experience local cusine in Stockholm.

We started with the reindeer salad since my bf had never had reindeer before. While the reindeer seemed less cooked than expected, by the end he really liked the mix of flavors and thought it paired well with the salad. We both got the Swedish meatballs for our entrees and loved them! We both loved the pickled cucumbers and lingonberries. The lingonberries pair so well with the meat! While there are only 3 meatballs, they were so huge neither of us could finish all of them. Especially because I wanted to save room for dessert: the sponge cake! While it didn't look like much on presentation, it was surprisingly moist and the cream and berries were absolutely delicious. My bf said he was only going to have one bite (he's not a big dessert guy) but instead ended up eating half! Highly recommend! Unfortunately, for most of the meal, the food itself didn't fully live up to the reputation. We ordered a pretty broad range of dishes. The herring was a bit of a miss for us and felt messy rather than memorable. The girls had the meatballs and a mushroom dumpling dish, but neither one really enjoyed their meal. Both dishes leaned very salty, to the point where it took away from the overall experience. I ordered the venison, which was fine, but not particularly special. It was one of those dishes that was technically okay, but didn't make me want to keep eating. I honestly didn't finish it. Mia ordered the cod, which looked good, but again, it didn't feel like anything spectacular or especially memorable. What completely changed the tone of the experience was the service. Toward the end of the meal, our server noticed that I hadn't eaten much. Without making a big deal out of it and without me asking for anything, he brought over a steak with potatoes and fries. That dish was excellent, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. More importantly, the gesture itself was incredibly thoughtful. That kind of hospitality is rare. He didn't have to do it. I wasn't complaining, and I wasn't expecting anything. I was prepared to leave the meal as-is. But the fact that he noticed and cared enough to make the experience better says a lot about the service and the professionalism of the staff. So while the original food we ordered was hit-or-miss, the service elevated the evening in a major way. The meal itself may not have been excellent across the board, but the hospitality was. For me, this ends up being a four-star experience: not because every dish landed, but because the staff turned what could have been a disappointing dinner into something memorable.
