We were in Stockholm for a few days last week and spent one day on the island of Djurgården. After visiting a couple of museums on the island, we visited Wärdshuset Ulla Winbladh for lunch. The building is stunning - sweet and beautiful - originally built for the Stockholm Art and Industrial Exhibition in 1897. Later, it was a bakery and then a restaurant, until 1992, when restaurateur, cookbook author and food columnist Nils Emil Ahlin took over the inn and created the Ulla Winbladh we know today. The food is classically Swedish and completely delicious. We started our meal by sharing Toast Skagen (pieces of toasted bread and a prawn salad called skagenröra, typically made with mayonnaise, sour cream and dill, sometimes dijon mustard, and garnished with roe), which is incredibly popular in the warmer months in Nordic countries. (They split the portion onto two plates for us!) My husband ordered another classic - poached cod served with shrimp, chopped hard boiled eggs, freshly grated horseradish, browned butter, and potatoes. I had my first (but not last) herring of the trip - fried herring with mashed potatoes, lingonberries, and lightly pickled cucumber. We had a wine and beer and really enjoyed our leisurely lunch at this beautiful restaurant on the island of Djurgården. A very beautiful and delicious meal. read more

I was beyond amazed by the quality of dinner at this restaurant. For the "oldest traditional restaurant I. Sweden" the food was amazingly fresh and well-prepared. The outdoor dining was beautiful and the staff were so amazing to our large group. Our server knew the menu so well, including the Midsommar holiday specials, and was so right in his suggestions for dinner and dessert. I am not kidding when I say that these were the best puréed potatoes I have ever eaten in my whole life! read more

Its been a while. But this Christmas we decided to go back to one of my favourite places, Ulla Winbladh, for julbord It hadn't changed: the welcome was super, coats taken away, we were led to a lovely corner table for 2 and as usual you are assigned a waiter looking after just a few tables for good service...btw, he (Amadeo) was excellent, friendly, prompt, unobtrusive, good English too which you expect anywhere in Sweden of course, saving me the embarrassment of my long forgotten Swedish, though of course my partner is fluent The julbord itself is in the next room, which is split into 2 identical halves to improve the flow; it was pretty crowded but not a problem In addition to the usual fare, there were a significant number of vegetarian and vegan options...very up to date! There are more than enough options and variations on a theme, all beautifully presented You could not fault the food, nor indeed the schnapps or wine...I have to say we overloaded on the herring and salmon...and then proceeded to do the same with the ham...after that it was a question of resting before trying anything else...it was a struggle but we made it! including dessert(ssss) So 2 x julbord, a glass of Hunters rouge, a Chablis & 2 Ulla akvavits and an extra 50 sek for the vestiaire came to SEK2150...good value all round A very enjoyable evening...the only thing missing this trip...no snow! that's when these places are so magical 9 Photos to follow read more

Food was delicious, the restaurant is located in a gorgeous park and the servers were extremely friendly and welcoming.

Fantastic food and service (during the meal), unfortunately tarnished by the fact they tried to scam us into leaving double the amount of the total for a tip. My friend and I were going to split the total, I asked how we can and if it's possible, the man kept putting into my phone calculator x2 (when I asked to pay for half) and said that's the total. I asked "so is this the bill per person? Because these are the same prices on the menu for each item?" he said no that is with tip. Why are you timing the bill x2 and that's what's owed? Our friends who are native Swedish who's wedding we are here for specifically said do not tip, it's not customary nor expected (except for maybe rounding up which is welcome but not expected for great service which we intended on doing). It's not like in America where servers are paid as low as $2/hr and fully dependent on tips. But he doubled down and said you need to tip in Sweden "all of Sweden" and even had his colleague (not a manager) come over and say the same thing. I've been to numerous countries in Europe it's not a thing. Even googled it to confirm. I get taking advantage of tourists is a tale as old as time and probably works often for them but it is simply just not a thing that is part of their customs and I am not going to fall for it. I said I will be paying this amount that is listed as "total" on my receipt and that is it and he finally said 'ok no problem'. Really put a bad taste in our mouths after what was really a great meal. Go here for their food and beautiful restaurant but absolutely do not let them pressure you into leaving DOUBLE your bill as a 'tip'. read more

This beautiful homestead in the park is like a fairy tale, sparkling with lights on a winter evening, serving traditional Swedish and Scandinavian fare. A dozen or so types of herring, lingonberry, meatballs and so on. The atmosphere is warm and festive -- perfect for a special occasion or a romantic dinner. We especially enjoyed and noted the bar served Cederlund's Caloric Punch -- it's as Swedish as it gets, and especially appreciated since our great-grandfather founded the company! ... but then the Socialist government took it away, and John Cederlund sought a fresh start in America...the rest is history, but that's another story. Ulla Winblah is great. Not to be missed when in Stockholm. If you're from New York City, think Tavern on the Green. read more

Swedish fare served in a very a traditional Swedish setting. Service served like ice -- heartless, compassionless and cold! Loved our visits in the past but today was traumatising. My husband and I thought we'd kick off our 2018 with a traditional Swedish lunch. We've been to Ulla Windbladh several times in the past during the summer months. We called to check in advance whether dogs are welcome in the restaurant and the person who answered the phone said yes. We have a 3-month old tiny miniature pinscher who is very well-behaved. We showed up on time and was ushered in to our corner table by the window. The table beside us were empty. We ordered Swedish classics -- toast skagen to start and beef rydberg for me. The portions were just right -- not too small, not too large, lagom as they say in Sweden. Our puppy Bettina, is very well behaved. She had her leash on and spent most of the time in her bag. I took her out of the bag before the starter, in between starter and main, and in between main and desert. She was on my lap during those times. Granted, when we first arrived at our table, she barked once when the waitress came over to serve our drinks -- as a small puppy would. She remained on my lap as I held her and she soon behaved after that and did not make a single nose after. Everything was going well we thought until we ordered desert. Suddenly a big bearded man in a suit came by strongly telling me not to feed our puppy on the table. Bettina was, once again sitting on my lap as I took her out of the bag after the waitress cleared our plates. I gave her small treat from my tote bag next to me as she was sitting on my lap. While I disagree with his concept of what "table" means (does that include my lap, inches away from the actual wooden table), I peacefully conceded because I don't want any commotion. So I put Bettina inside her bag on the floor next to me. About a minute later (or perhaps about a minute and a half), he came back again to say "your dog needs to stay in her bag because she's being snappy at staff" with a raised voice and a stern tone. My husband and I were aghast! I do not understand what kind of person would do that unless they maliciously intended to ruin someone's luncheon. To go to our table twice in a span of two minutes to tell us off is deliberately calculating, with precision, to make us extremely uncomfortable. What kind of person would snap at someone instructing them to put their dog in the bag when she's already in the bag? The three month old puppy was well-behaved the entire time so I extremely disagree with the idea or his claim that the dog was being "snappy". It's not fake news. It's a blatant LIE! A falsehood! We have two theories here -- First: my husband suspected that the waitress (who is not our server by the way) serving the table of 7 or 8 tourists near us was having a field day because she had problems handling their order due to language barriers. When I took my dog outside the restaurant for a break, that waitress came up to my husband and asked him "is the dog gone?". It was clear that she was in a foul mood to the other table and perhaps channeled her problems to the host who then manifested them all on our poor puppy. Second: it could also be our waitress. Sure, Bettina barked ONCE for a second at the beginning of the service when we first sat on our table and it was smooth sailing after. Assuming it was our waitress, why wait to prey on our puppy until desert? We were so taken aback by the whole thing -- there we were, thinking we had a lovely time until the host himself started barking at us (never mind the poor pup who kept her mouth shut). It was quite frankly, astonishing, and we literally had no words at the table. As soon as our server served our desert, creme brûlée, on the table, I immediately asked for the bill, handed my credit card, put our jackets on and bolted for the door. I'm not the type of likes to throw fits at restaurants. NEVER EVER QUESTION, NEVER EVER FIGHT BACK, NEVER EVER SAY ANYTHING. You never know whether they'll spit on your food or drink or worse, they might poison you. We just wanted to get out of there as fast as we can so we left the desert untouched. It was truly awful. I guess there are people out there who simply are not capable of being compassionate. Sure, we probably would've gotten better service had we not brought Bettina but perhaps it's time for them to prohibit dogs from going to the restaurant rather than harassing paying diners. The Swedish Meatballs is absolutely delicious. This is the place to bring your friends and family if you love traditional Swedish food. The deep fried herring is also a local favorite and not to mention the famous caviar appetizer. The price of wines and champagne is price right, unlike America they do not charge 2-3 times the cost to buy a bottle. read more

We walked here for lunch after visiting the ABBA museum and everything was delicious! The complimentary bread basket was yummy as well. I ordered the Shrimp Salad which came with avocado and egg which was pretty standard. I tried some of my dad's pork and mashed potatoes, my sister's steak and potatoes, and my mom's herring and there was not a single thing I didn't love! My dad's pork was the best bacon I've ever had. It was so crispy that when I dug my fork into it, it split right off. My sister's steak came with a garlic butter and it was cooked to perfection. The potatoes had garlic on them and they were so soft. I don't even like herring but I tried some of my mom's and it was good. They accept discover/diner's club international which has no foreign transaction fees. Service was attentive and the outside patio was nice. read more

This restaurant embodies perfection in an old fashioned manner. Both the exterior & the interior design gives a graceful & appealing impression. The service is extremely professional and attentive yet personal. The cuisine is traditional swedish, occasionally with an international twist. The lobster soup served as a starter was a real delight & I absolutely loved the halibut with champagne sauce that I had for main course. The haricot verts had a great texture & the fish was perfectly cooked. I had a sourcream pudding with calvados apples for dessert which was an interesting experience. We needed to treat ourselves a little because our trip in Sweden was coming to an end. We found this place not to far from our hotel. The service is very friendly. We had to wait 10 minutes because the terrace was full. However it was well worth any kind of waiting. The steaks we had were incredible. I don't remember the name because it was in Swedish, my dad had one with mustard coming with it. Mine was the one with fried onions. It was simply incredible. I was so happy to see they had Briska cider, because I feel in love with this product during my trip, so I had two. Very refreshing. One thing I recommend is to dress up a little when going there. It's a little expensive and since we're visiting with only a backpack each, we were a little underdressed. It didn't seem to bother the staff or other guests, but it bothered us a little :) read more

Tried their delicious Christmas buffet - it surely is better than most buffets out there. A lot of varieties of sill - which is a must on any Swedish Christmas/Easter/Midsummer table. Not too crowded which was nice - I've had better desert before but for me that's not a deal-breaker. Can recommend to drink their mumma instead of beer, since it adds a christmasy touch to the dining. Friendly staff and good desert - will definitely come back some other time! read more

Apparently this place has one of the best swedish meatballs. I haven't had that many swedish meatballs besides at ikea. and it's not like these were super memorable in that it had some unique flavor. but the swedish meatballs were tasty and I would go back if I could. This place is fenomenal. Not only is it perfectly located in Djurgården in case you want to enter its museums, visit Skansen or simply go for a walk but it is also well worth a visit just to try its delicious food while enjoying its surroundings (gardens and trees). It is tastefully decorated and there are lots of details that make it look like a doll's house. Both the interior and the terrace are great places to sit, although if it's sunny you will enjoy the experience much more outside. You can sit in the shade as parts are covered with sun umbrellas. Fillet was accompanied by mushrooms and spinach in a very delicious way and it was way beyond expectations. We came here for lunch after visiting the Skansen. Amazing atmosphere as you are seated directly in the park. The service was wonderful, never went once without having a full glass of water. This could have been a simple tourist trap butt no. It's a great restaurant located on Djurgården "The (Royal) Game Park") a park on an island in central Stockholm. The environment is so nice in particular during the summer. I had poached cod with shrimps, boiled egg, horseraddish and melted butter. It was great. This place is old school Swedish with style. Set on Djurgården you have a lovely walk to this from the tram stop. The waiting staff are very friendly and attentive, making sure that both myself and my guests were looked after well whilst having a little bit of a joke with us. The food is very tradtionallly Swedish, with meatballs, cod with shrimps and boiled egg. It is of a very high standard and the tastes/flavours are well balanced. In the summer they have a big outdoor area where you can dine and watch the world go by. Recommended for any time of the year. read more

I've been going to Ulla Winblad for many years, and it has been consistently excellent. The interior is authentically traditional, the food superb, and the service very professional. The food and the service was really good. A bit pricy but still ok due to the atmosphere. BUT, how can you charge 20 Swedish crowns per jacket in the entrance? It's like they are begging for the small amount. If the restaurant wants to make those small amount. Increase the price a little. Because of this I will never go there again. The place is located close to the VASA and ABBA museum, it is very traditional and cozy. The service was good and the food was excellent. We started with the white asparagus and crispy poached egg with hollandaise sauce, the sauce was tasty and the asparagus melted in your mouth the egg was different but also very good. We then ordered Gravad Lax which is a very traditional scandinavian dish and it was by far the best one we tried in all of our trip. In summary everything we tried was amazing and i wish i would have had more time in Stockholm because i would have gone back there without a doubt. The ambiance was dressy but you did see people a bit more causal that were probably walking around the area and stopped by. A rule of thumb would be casual-dressy in the afternoon and dressy in the evening. read more

In a world where everyone who knows how to cook is charging $500 per person for 7 course dinner and everyone else is close to poisoning you (if not immediately long term guaranteed) it is refreshing to find a restaurant like this one where cooking is fine and pricing reasonable. Alcohol is expensive as everywhere in Sweden with the cheapest bottle of wine we could get was about 400 kron or $50. Other than that it was a very nice dinner experience. read more

Incredible flavors that were beyond complex. The Swedish meatballs sent my 18 year old son into heaven. So much so that he asked for another helping. after wandering around skansen i was really looking forward to having lunch here. even though i looked tired and wasn't exactly dressed to the nines, i was still received graciously and treated like any other customer. a glass of bubbly and some water was just what i needed after that long walk and some bread was quickly brought to me. i am usually into the white, crusty sort but this dark brown bread was exceptional. i did my best to not eat it all before the veal and mushroom casserole arrived, and i was right to do so; it was rich and delicious and a generous portion to boot. it came with an obscene amount of creamy mashed potatoes and a.. jelly. they went beautifully together but unfortunately it was too much for me to finish. the bill was very reasonable for the location, service, and quality. i really wanted to try a dessert as well but i was way too full.. next time! read more
