The matcha was strong and pretty good. Two drinks came to almost $18. Inside wasn't that nice to sit unfortunately. It's a small space but kind of beaten up with the paint on the walls coming off. The atmosphere was a little strange. There was Christmas music being played full volume in august (one song can be funny but this was full volume for an hour). The employees were having fun when a friend of theirs came in and was cursing pretty loudly. For the price and atmosphere, I wouldn't go back. Saw videos of this cafe & surprisingly stumbled upon it after deciding to not stay at another viral "petite-sized cake" bakery/cafe 1/2 block away. Have been looking for a GOOD Hojicha Latte (non-oxidized please!) in this city too. Some items on their menu weren't available (ie. banana flavor). I got a Vanilla Hojicha Latte ($5.99 for 12oz), less ice. The cafe only uses oatmilk - yay! The drink was delicious & the perfect size. The Hojicha was frothy, toasty, later on had hints of chocolate & coffee. At first thought the amount of syrup would be too sweet, but it was perfect. The cafe is TINY and easy to miss. But it's just 2 blocks from the F/East Broadway station. It feels very much like that young DYI Chinatown / Lower East Side energy of the early 2000's (with a single bathroom that's very much an old NYC studio apartment aura). The cafe is painted all in matte black, the drop ceiling is a plywood engineering feat, antique Chinese wall decor. Chairs & tables are a mix of rustic/modern (petrified wood table with mini matcha grinding wheels on top), IKEA & CostCo. (appreciate the folding chairs with back support though!). There's about 8-10 seats (2 tables that fit 2 people) in a small space. 1 person was working on a laptop but otherwise the space is more for a quick drink or to-go. The staff was really nice and seem born & raised in Chinatown. Service was quick & a short line formed just as quick but were served in minutes (1/2pm Saturday). The cafe uses Aiya brand matcha & hojicha. Overheard a lot of customers saying how good their drink was. Excited to explore more of the Two Bridges neighborhood! read more

From my first experience at Matcha 108, I wasn't quite blown away by their matcha, primarily due to the fact that I probably shouldn't have ordered the vanilla matcha. The vanilla flavor felt quite cloying and overwhelmed the taste of the matcha. Additionally the straws are flimsy and when I tried to stir my vanilla matcha, the straws got bent quite badly and the drink wasn't stirred as well as I'd like, which contributed partly to the strong vanilla flavor. I finally removed the lid to stir it, but overall felt that the vanilla was too strong and the matcha itself wasn't the nutty flavor profile that I like. Judging by other reviews, the banana matcha is much more popular, but I'm not a fan of bananas, so this may not be the store for me. read more

This is one of my friends's favorite places to get matcha in Manhattan, and I see why! They use a lot more matcha than other cafés do in their drinks, so you can be sure that you are going to be caffeinated after finishing your drink. The space itself is small, and it definitely is not great for large parties who want to try to sit down and enjoy their drinks indoors, but I will say I love the way that they decorated the space. The artwork is awesome and whoever curated the artwork has a great eye. The baristas were nice and took their time preparing our drinks. Didn't feel rushed at all even though there was a long line behind us. I ordered the Uji matcha latte but I would try the banana one next time. A kinda hidden & lowkey matcha spot in the outskirts of Chinatown. Calm and minimal interior design (a lot of diy which is cool). Got the lavender matcha here (~$8) and it was alright. I feel like they needed to add more lavender for the taste to stay throughout the drink. At first the lavender was potent but as you mix it with the matcha the taste disappeared and it just tasted like a regular matcha latte at the end which was kinda disappointing. This is the coolest matcha place I've been too and nothing can compared. When they say their matcha is ceremonial grade then you know Matcha 108 is not lying. Their matcha is very bright green compared to a lot of matcha places I've been to. I decided to go for their matcha banana latte and it was so cool and tasty. Could taste a subtle of banana syrup in the matcha. The matcha grade was so bright green that I licked every piece of matcha I could find in the cup! Also the interior of the store is so nice! Lots of Japanese armory and pieces of art! Love the wallpaper! There's also a racket full of clothes sitting against the wall, which I did not find it fit with the rest of the Japanese artwork. There bathroom is a bathroom behind the curtains in the back, which is a tight fit to get to. The bathroom is really small and looks like a bathroom in your own apartment because it has an old shower inside. read more

My only complaint is that I wish it had a little more banana syrup. this is probably one of the few places i trust in downtown manhattan for matcha that isn't a waste of your money. i make most of my matchas at home with marukyu, so it is on the rarer side i crave matcha when i'm out and about that meets expectations. they put a healthy dose of matcha in their banana latte, so much so that i generally leave feeling pretty energized, have increased heart palpitations, and get a teeny-bit over-caffeinated. not a huge problem, but better remember that if you're sensitive to caffeine. the matcha taste is a little on the stronger side (more grassier/vegetal), so it helps for me personally to ask them to add a little extra sweetener in it. i think the banana flavor is there, more on the subtle side, but noticeable and nothing near artificial-tasting or overbearing. i can get the small size on my own and feel SUPER caffeinated or split the larger size with my husband and still feel pretty caffeinated without catastrophizing. it definitely feels more on the coffee/latte like spectrum of caffeination, which is on the rarer side for me personally when it comes to matchas. the staff here are pretty quick and efficient. i also love that their go-to milk is oat, which they don't charge extra for. that's kind of a big deal with all the other places upcharging for plant-based milk alternatives b/c they use shitty dairy milk to cut costs (I SEE Y'ALL!!). the space has some limited seating (about a couple tables and a bench or two), so it might be better as a swing by to pick up and get on your merry way kind of place, but if you want to rest a table might open. very chill vibes. i just appreciate the no-frills aspect of this cafe. they don't skimp on the matcha, it tastes good without being fake or overly dessert-forward, the staff are nice, and the establishment remains a humble hole-in-the-wall, just the way i like it. probably best matcha for it's consistency, trueness to flavor, and no-frills experience. read more

Probably one of the best matchas/hojichas you can get in manhattan, but with oat milk being the standard pairing, it lacked the full bodied texture and flavor that a latte has with dairy milk. I did appreciate the strength of the tea - it's quite rare to find a spot that actually puts enough tea in the lattes! Unfortunately they seem to run out of menu items, which can make ordering what you hope for potentially difficult. The day I went there was only agave sweetener, and no vanilla, which I imagine is a popular variation of both matcha and hojicha. (Makes me wonder, how can you run out of vanilla?!) There is a small amount of seating inside, and staff are overall helpful and are doing what they can with what is available to them. Management likely needs to better estimate how much stock they need of their various flavorings so that they don't sell out. read more

A relatively new matcha spot in the LES! I really enjoyed the bold, earthy matcha that they feature. Love how they give you a GENEROUS amount of matcha!! My partner's banana matcha latte was probably my favorite out of the 3 drinks I tried. The matcha blended smoothly with the banana milk and it wasn't too sweet. The uji matcha without milk was refreshing and mixed very well. My uji matcha latte was less creamy/milky than others in NYC, but it again really highlighted the strong matcha flavors. All drinks are made with oat milk. Unfortunately my drink had more matcha clumps, but our other two drinks did not and were mixed well. There was a long line so I wonder if they were just in a rush when sieving/mixing. You have the option to sweeten your drinks but we didn't. Several other customers asked for more ice but I felt like my drink to ice ratio was fine. Staff members were really nice and attentive. The store itself has limited seating. I liked the Japanese decor with the Chinese lettering outside. Definitely hole in the wall type of exterior. A great matcha drink - I got the iced banana matcha, which claims to use 7 grams of matcha per 12oz drink. It's definitely earthy and rich with a vibrant green color. I got it lightly sweetened and enjoyed it. It's not too strong, banana wise, which I enjoyed! My husband got the Uji matcha latte and thought it was pretty average for him. I think the milk choice just results in a less creamy matcha latte. After exploring Dumbo, I stopped by Matcha 108 in Chinatown. This is a fairly new matcha shop. They really took their time decorating this place because the seating is very unique with plants and antiques. They also have some clothes they sell as well. They have various matcha and hojicha drinks for sale. You can either get a small size of 12 oz or a larger one of 16 oz. There's a girl who works this shop herself and you can watch her make your matcha. You can tell by the dark green color that they use a high quality ceremonial grade matcha. All lattes are also made with oat milk. In addition to the regular lattes, they have vanilla, lavender, and banana flavors available. I decided to get the vanilla matcha latte and my friends both for the banana matcha latte. The matcha had a deep earthy flavor. The vanilla flavoring was enough as a sweetener and didn't overpower the matcha at all. My friends really enjoyed their banana matcha lattes as well.
