I really enjoyed Fontainhas. When you step in, there are huge windows that bring in lots of natural light and the place is decorated beautifully. I loved seeing the plants along with hints of pink, orange, and yellow throughout the art and furniture. It's a gorgeous space. Service was good, nothing much to mention. For food, we ordered the royal chai, mango lassi, breakfast kathi-rito, and the condensed milk bun. The standouts were the royal chai and the breakfast kathi-rito. The royal chai was creamy, salty, perfect sweet, and silky. It had notes of cinnamon and saffron, paired with sea salt. I loved this drink. The breakfast kathi-rito was tasty. I loved the potatoes, cheese, egg, avocado, and whatever else was in it. The sauce on the side was delicious. Not exactly sure what it was but it was sweet with a kick. The mango lassi did not have enough mango flavor for me, I couldn't justify paying $10 for it. The condensed milk bun was good but it was similar to any other sweet bun in an asian bakery. I'd pass on both of these. Overall, I'd highly recommend checking out Fontainhas. It'd be a perfect spot to check out if you're in the area for the Brooklyn Flea, or just Dumbo. read more

Transport to India without flying? Say less This coffee shop is such an iconic spot in DUMBO. If you dine in, grab a seat first and they'll come take your order at the table, grab and go can be ordered at the counter. The menu is super interesting with lots of Indian dishes and drinks. I would have liked it more if there was a different frosting that was creamier and less sweet and if there was a layer of jam in the middle to keep the cake moist. - mango smoothie (10/10): mango blended with coconut yogurt and vanilla pea protein. This was phenomenal and i am surprised it was not as popular as it should be considering it has protein and probiotics. Love this cozy spot for chai! I've had their Royal chai twice now (both the hot and iced version) it's more cinnamon and saffron forward with a hint of sea salt! Delicious but I may ask for it slightly less sweet next time. I also really enjoyed the Kati roll breakfast burrito! The smoked salmon toast was great too but maybe could use some extra podi This spot is spacious and conveniently located near timeout market. The seating is cozy and would be a great place to work from. Service is also great as well and if you are seated there the chai comes in cute glassware. This was a fun, fusiony place. The food menu however was not very extensive for brunch and it's more of light cafe snacks. It's a nice place with good ambiance; however seating is rather limited. We were able to find some counter seats on a Friday morning. Ordering, payment etc was somewhat unclear. They come to get your order if you're seated. And payment too, but it's hard to get their attention since they're working up front at the cafe counter. I had a ginger chai and I was happy to see they're trying to do the pour traditional style in front of you where you sit. This was seriously strong ginger and it was amazing! Food was decent but not specially amazing. We had the Kathi-rito and Avocado Bharta Toast. Ultimately, while the names are Indianized, the food was still mostly plain burrito and avocado toast. Would have liked a bit more Indian flavors in there. Couple of things did not work. The Ginger Chai was served in a glass tumbler. It was SO HOT that you couldn't actually lift the glass. They need to use mugs with a handle. I appreciated the beautiful glassware, but I still need to be able to touch it. The cloth napkin. Omg. I have NEVER seen this. I put in my lap and my pants were lined all over with this insane lint/fuzz that was hard to get off. DO NOT place the napkin on your clothes. Repeat. DO NOT place the napkin on your clothes. DO NOT.... Finally, I got a Cutting Chai.... and the menu doesn't specify how big or small it is going to be. I was staring at a 4 oz serving when they gave it to me, hahaha. Apparently, it was written in the glossary at the back what the size was, but not on the menu where you're browsing actual menu items. I want to give it 3.75, and it's rounded to 4. Quite a large airy, bright space with low key casual seating options , with tables , Long bench / day bed with cushions , floor cushions, bar seating as one of many seating choices . Heather was our friendly and cheerful wait staff making for a lovely interaction . Offered some suggestions from the menu and the neighborhood. Kathi-Rito was our pick for a light snack which very good . A roll with eggs and avocado a medley of other ingredients with a light dipping sauce . Cutting Chai was with it was excellent . Interesting cafe style food with an Indian twist. We tried the breakfast kathi-rito (without bacon) and the lunch wrap with paneer. The breakfast burrito was full of spicy eggs and came with a tasty achaar type sauce on the side. The lunch wrap had a nice variety of vegetables, soft paneer, and some crispy bits/veg for some textural variety. I preferred the lunch wrap, but both were nice for a quick meal. read more

Finally made it to Fontainhas and was so glad I did as it was such a special and lovely experience. We visited on a weekend afternoon the vibes were great. It can definitely get crowded so grab any seats that you see! When you sit down someone will come to take your order and a lot of people were having meetings or doing work on laptops there. We loved the cutting chai which was the perfect size, and also really enjoyed the breakfast sandwich. We wished we were hungrier so that we could try more of the menu items! The largest collection of hipster coffee shops in India can be found in Bandra West and Goa. Referencing a section of Panjim, a city in Goa once famed for its gambling and fenny that now hosts upscale vinyl bars, the name Fontainhas is an appropriate title for a chic DUMBO cafe and restaurant offering updated takes on classics from the subcontinent. The menu appears to still be limited for a quasi-soft opening, but I had a cutting chai (half cup of chai) and bun maska. Bun maska may just be a buttered bun, but this nostalgic breakfast made famous by the Parsi cafes of SoBo is more about the emotions than the flavors. I added bhujiya to my order for a bit of extra crunch. Will be back to explore the full evening menu soon as well. read more

Such a cute Indian cafe in Dumbo! I've never been to an Indian cafe before and it was such a nice experience. They had a variety of chai teas and drinks on their menu (also has food options and wine as well if you don't want to go for only a cafe vibe). I ordered a latte since it was early and a tomato soup since I didn't want to eat much prior to a lunch reservation. The soup wa delicious and you could also add toast if you want it to be more filling. The indoor space and decor was so lovely and felt so warm and cozy. Would be a great spot to have a catch up or date or also to read a book on your own or do some work! Close by to Brooklyn bridge park if you want to go for a nice stroll afterwards. OK i don't usually leave reviews but i am genuinely floored. I work in Dumbo and am always looking for new coffee spots, especially ones that are affordable and a good bang for your buck. My coworker told me about this place, and i noticed it was on my walk to the office, so i was like ok great, let me give it a shot. I was especially intrigued when i looked it up on Apple Maps and it said as the description, "Dumbo has a lot of crowded coffee shops serving mediocre lattes for around $8.50, but Fontainhas is different". It sounded like exactly what I had been looking for- a reliable, tasty, high-quality, affordable coffee shop. So, let me know why, when i walked in and ordered an ICED CARAMEL LATTE, it was $9.80. Oh, you got me f*cked UP if you think I'm spending $10 on a coffee (is there liquor in this?? is this a cocktail?? hello?). Also, the cup was one of those dinky small ones that you drink in like 4 sips. So, obviously, I looked at the barista and was like, "actually, i am not going to get anything" and walked out. There is no way in hell i was going to actually spend TEN DOLLARS on a LATTE. I think this would not have been such a dumbfounding moment for me if they didn't literally market themselves online as an affordable option because other coffee shops in dumbo are just "sooo insane omg $8.50 lattes". came here looking for a chill place to sit and read and eat a little snack. I got the $9 chai which was a little pricy but this is NYC. It was tasty and had salty foam on top. I also had the lunch wrap that was healthy and tasted good. I'm not sure exactly what was in it, but it was good. The only thing I didn't like was the silverware smelled like soap, and the "napkin" was a dish towel/rag that had a weird smell. Otherwise, it's a great alternative to the traditional coffee shop.
