I really enjoyed Fontainhas. When you step in, there are huge windows that bring in lots of natural light and the place is decorated beautifully. I loved seeing the plants along with hints of pink, orange, and yellow throughout the art and furniture. It's a gorgeous space. Service was good, nothing much to mention. For food, we ordered the royal chai, mango lassi, breakfast kathi-rito, and the condensed milk bun. The standouts were the royal chai and the breakfast kathi-rito. The royal chai was creamy, salty, perfect sweet, and silky. It had notes of cinnamon and saffron, paired with sea salt. I loved this drink. The breakfast kathi-rito was tasty. I loved the potatoes, cheese, egg, avocado, and whatever else was in it. The sauce on the side was delicious. Not exactly sure what it was but it was sweet with a kick. The mango lassi did not have enough mango flavor for me, I couldn't justify paying $10 for it. The condensed milk bun was good but it was similar to any other sweet bun in an asian bakery. I'd pass on both of these. Overall, I'd highly recommend checking out Fontainhas. It'd be a perfect spot to check out if you're in the area for the Brooklyn Flea, or just Dumbo. read more

Since my optimistic initial review, I've had the chance to re-visit Fontainhas a few times and sample more of the menu. I'm sad to say that this has turned out to be a disappointment, catering to the Matcha-drinking Alo-wearing DUMBO crowd. One Google reviewer referred to the cuisine here as "gentrified", which I'm inclined to agree with. The filter coffee was absolutely atrocious - one is not supposed to be asked "with or without milk?" when ordering filter coffee. The paneer sandwich was supposedly made with Amul butter, but any charming nostalgic aspect of this dish was removed by the dry layer of ghas-phus above the paneer bhurji. I am all for fusion as the propeler of culinary innovation, but I do not want to live in a future where Sweetgreen has infiltrated the foods that I hold near and dear to my heart. read more

Love this cozy spot for chai! I've had their Royal chai twice now (both the hot and iced version) it's more cinnamon and saffron forward with a hint of sea salt! This was a fun, fusiony place. The food menu however was not very extensive for brunch and it's more of light cafe snacks. It's a nice place with good ambiance; however seating is rather limited. We were able to find some counter seats on a Friday morning. Ordering, payment etc was somewhat unclear. They come to get your order if you're seated. And payment too, but it's hard to get their attention since they're working up front at the cafe counter. I had a ginger chai and I was happy to see they're trying to do the pour traditional style in front of you where you sit. This was seriously strong ginger and it was amazing! Food was decent but not specially amazing. We had the Kathi-rito and Avocado Bharta Toast. Ultimately, while the names are Indianized, the food was still mostly plain burrito and avocado toast. Would have liked a bit more Indian flavors in there. Couple of things did not work. The Ginger Chai was served in a glass tumbler. It was SO HOT that you couldn't actually lift the glass. They need to use mugs with a handle. I appreciated the beautiful glassware, but I still need to be able to touch it. The cloth napkin. Omg. I have NEVER seen this. I put in my lap and my pants were lined all over with this insane lint/fuzz that was hard to get off. DO NOT place the napkin on your clothes. Repeat. DO NOT place the napkin on your clothes. DO NOT.... Finally, I got a Cutting Chai.... and the menu doesn't specify how big or small it is going to be. I was staring at a 4 oz serving when they gave it to me, hahaha. Quite a large airy, bright space with low key casual seating options , with tables , Long bench / day bed with cushions , floor cushions, bar seating as one of many seating choices . They had a variety of chai teas and drinks on their menu (also has food options and wine as well if you don't want to go for only a cafe vibe). I ordered a latte since it was early and a tomato soup since I didn't want to eat much prior to a lunch reservation. The soup wa delicious and you could also add toast if you want it to be more filling. The indoor space and decor was so lovely and felt so warm and cozy. My coworker told me about this place, and i noticed it was on my walk to the office, so i was like ok great, let me give it a shot. I was especially intrigued when i looked it up on Apple Maps and it said as the description, "Dumbo has a lot of crowded coffee shops serving mediocre lattes for around $8.50, but Fontainhas is different". It sounded like exactly what I had been looking for- a reliable, tasty, high-quality, affordable coffee shop. So, let me know why, when i walked in and ordered an ICED CARAMEL LATTE, it was $9.80. Oh, you got me f*cked UP if you think I'm spending $10 on a coffee (is there liquor in this?? is this a cocktail?? hello?). Also, the cup was one of those dinky small ones that you drink in like 4 sips. So, obviously, I looked at the barista and was like, "actually, i am not going to get anything" and walked out. There is no way in hell i was going to actually spend TEN DOLLARS on a LATTE.
