If you're considering getting a Pomeranian from Mathews Bitsy Pomeranians, run by Jacqueline Mathews, please read this carefully--and take the time to filter Yelp by the lowest-rated and filtered reviews. That's where the real, unfiltered experiences live. Mine is now among them. Just two weeks ago, my beautiful Pomeranian passed away suddenly at only 5 1/2 years old. She went into cardiac arrest during a routine vet visit. There were no signs beforehand--just a healthy-appearing, playful pup who was suddenly gone. The vet techs tried everything, but they couldn't bring her back. We had a full autopsy done--my vet kindly paid for it because we were all so shocked. The results showed a rare heart condition (Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) ) thickening of the heart tissues usually found in cats, one that's nearly impossible to detect until it's too late. She also had tracheal issues, which I've since learned are common in poorly bred Pomeranians. You cannot outrun genetics, no matter how much you love your dog or how good your vet is. This is a condition inherited. When I first met Jacqueline, I had an uneasy feeling. I asked for health documentation, and she dismissed me, saying: "Why would you need that? They're healthy." I asked to see the puppy's parents and was told, "Why do you need to see them? You don't always look like your parents." When I heard loud barking from what seemed to be her garage, I asked if there were dogs back there. She denied it and said she didn't hear any barking at all. Eventually, she brought out the mother, but only at a distance--it felt staged and uncomfortable. Her answers were vague and evasive. She couldn't tell me exactly how many dogs she had, only that some were at her girlfriend's house, some here, and others "somewhere else." It felt like she was hiding something. It felt like a backyard breeding operation. After I bought my dog, Jacqueline continued texting me pictures of other puppies she had for sale, asking if I or anyone I knew wanted to buy one. She always seemed to have a steady stream of Pomeranian puppies available, which raised even more red flags. Where were all these puppies coming from? How many dogs is she really breeding--and in what conditions? Despite my gut feeling, I had already fallen in love with my pup. I waited a month to bring her home. During that time, I started having nightmares, and eventually found the filtered reviews here on Yelp. I confronted Jacqueline about them, but she insisted they were written by "competitors trying to sabotage her business." I wanted to believe her, but I no longer can. Too many stories, too many patterns. And now, I'm living one of them. Please--if you're looking for a dog, adopt. There are so many animals who need loving homes. But if you absolutely must get a purebred, find a breeder with merit and ethics--one who breeds to show, not just to sell. Look for breeders who health test, who can provide transparent records, and who genuinely care about the dogs' well-being--not profit. Just because a dog is AKC registered does not mean it's been genetically tested, responsibly bred, or isn't the product of inbreeding. Don't be fooled by registration alone. I adored my Pomeranian with all my heart. She brought me so much joy, and her loss is unbearable. I will never support Jacqueline Mathews or Mathews Bitsy Pomeranians again, and I hope that by sharing this, I can help others avoid the same heartbreak. read more

I bought my first Pomeranian Bear from Jacklyn in 2003. He was the most beautiful Pom ever. Perfect show quality and about 5/6 pounds. His hair and face was literally perfect. My second pom in 2006 didn't have the coat as my first. More silky coat. Both poms lived to be 16 & 18 Bear did have a treacha problem but most well breed poms gave this. I purchased 3 Pomeranians from Jackie. I was told she had absolutely gorgeous Pomeranians. I had recently lost one and was in need of another one to help me through the grief process. The first one I put a deposit on and she called me and told me that my puppy had died. She offered me a different color one but I was adamant I wanted a specific color so she said she had a puppy. When I picked my puppy up, my mother noticed that she had adult teeth, her paws were large, and she didn't act like a puppy. I got her home and her menstrual cycle came on immediately. I realized she was an older dog and that she had for breeding. I had put down a deposit for another dog because I wanted 2 girls. I picked her up and she had a cough. Jackie gave me a penicillin capsule and told me to open it and sprinkle some of it on her tongue. I was a little cautious so I took her to Banfield and they told me she had a touch of kennel cough. They gave me liquid amoxicillin to give to her but the cough never stopped. I honestly thought it was allergies. Jackie called me out of the blue one day and asked me did I want a little boy Pomeranian and she would give me a large discount on him if I said yes. She said she really liked the way I took care of my babies and she would want me to have him plus she was about to go on vacation. I decided that I would take him. He was extremely small, couldn't bark, and he barely was able to walk. I think he was just born. When I went to pick him up, I asked to see the parents of him and she said she don't do that because a person had put a down payment on a puppy and when another lady came over she wanted that particular puppy and told her she would give her $500 more for the dog and to tell the person (that put the deposit down) that the dog died. She actually was telling me about the first dog I purchased from her. Fast forward, my second dog didn't stop coughing . My mother told me to take her back to the vet and insist that something is wrong because she was keeping everyone up in the middle of the night because she couldn't breathe. I took her. Her heart was enlarged and was pushing against her trachea. She had congestive heart failure. My little boy hair started falling out. I had a host of test done and it resulted with his thyroid not working and they said it was hereditary. Unfortunately, all three dogs has passed away from their health problems but their vet said that I was sold beautiful SICK dogs. I paid too much for them to have so many problems and vet bills. I wrote my review 6 months ago and have been in contact with others who read it and told me about their horrible experiences with Jacklin. I lost my precious puppy before her 4th birthday. She lived a happy life with us until she succumbed to a genetic neurological disease. My heart was broken into a million pieces and I still grieve for her 15 months after her death. I am writing this now because I thought she may be out of business but see that people are still buying puppies from her and writing positive reviews about how compassionate she is. That is not true. We bought our male Pomeranian 5 years ago from Bitsy Poms. We went to check out some of her Poms and they are adorable! Being in love with her Poms, we gave her a deposit and decided to wait for our guy. We paid $1200 for him ( bc he was going be heavier and the typical orange color) and got him at 9 weeks. Jacklyn was nice but never showed me the parents or where she keeps the dogs. Also, she said her dogs don't have ugly fox long nose faces. That should have been a red flag but I was too excited about my first dog. When we finally got him, I immediately put Petplan insurance on him since my friends recommended it. Thank God we did because he's had so many issues. We had laparoscopic surgery for his retained testicle, decidious baby teeth removal and Lazer therapy for his skin allergies. He has grade 2 luxating patella and slight collapsing trachea. We've spent thousands of dollars on him. He is on Honest kitchen diet or we make him organic food in a crock pot and supplements. I love our boy but I would NOT buy another dog, especially not from her. Our other friend we met at a pom meet up just had 2 surgeries too! I have to say Bitsy Poms breeds the most beautiful Pomeranians I've ever seen, but my sweet Charlie was not healthy. First, he needed surgery on his two back knees then he started losing hair and was diagnosed with cushings disease as if that wasn't bad enough he had a severe trachea collapse. My husband and I spent thousands through the next year trying to save our baby...during this time we also learned he had 3 leaky heart valves. He was basically a mess. He lived just past his 7th birthday which the vet said was a miracle. I will miss him forever. This was my first Pomeranian and I did not know I should view the grounds and check reviews. The two stars are because my puppy is super cute. But let me tell you, getting involved with this breeder has been stressful and frustrating to say the least. Jacklin is extremely bad at communicating. Every time you reach out to her for updates on your puppy, she gives you the run around; she's "busy" and will tell you another day. I felt like this was a scam till the moment I had the dog in my arms. She has certain phrases she repeats, "champion bloodlines" & "double coat excellency" and these will be the answer to most of your questions LOL She claims she's not a "backyard breeder" but the parents of the puppies are unavailable, they're either at "shows" or with other females. I paid $1800 for my pup. No health issues as of yet. Only time will tell. Would I go through this emotional tornado again for another puppy? I don't know. We got two adorable puppies from Jacklin 2.5 years ago. I don't normally write reviews on Yelp, but after reading so many negative and untrue reviews here, I feel an obligation to set the record straight because I could not be happier with my puppies. I visited her house twice, once to visit the puppies and make a deposit and the second time to pick them up. Her house is beautiful and clean and she has an entire section of it dedicated to her Pomeranians, who are the loves of her life. For people who say that she lies about the puppies health issues, she let us know when we got our pups that she had one with a heart defect and was selling him at an extreme discount because of it. She didn't lie or hide any information about any of the puppies. This is what she does, and the dogs she has rank top placement in dog shows. We are constantly stopped when walking are pups so people can say hi to them, and they are the friendliest, happiest dogs in the world and have never had a single health problem. The people who stop us, thank us for making their day. I have referred so many people to Jacklin and they are all so happy with their puppies. And we are now looking to get a new Pomeranian and Jacklin was our first call. She is an amazing woman and has such love and pride in her beautiful babies. My boyfriend and I have been looking for a parti pom for some time. I'm pretty picky so I wanted to make sure her facial markings were asymmetrical so that I could call her Panda. After calling a bunch of breeders, I found Bitsypoms. Jacklin was super sweet and told us about a recent litter. She wasn't available that week, but said her daughter could show us the one we were interested in. Once I saw Panda, I fell in love! We waited a few weeks and picked her up and had everything in order (shots and dog food for transition). We ended up keeping the dog food that they had because she seemed to like it and it was great for small breed dogs. This was our first time purchasing our own puppy and Jacklin was extremely helpful and answered all our questions. She even emailed us photos of Panda's mom and dad. Panda looks exactly like them :) Panda is now 3 years old (going on 4 in August). She has a beautiful coat and an amazing tail that everyone always compliments us on. After my original Review on Mathew Bitsy Poms I have to say when I wrote my shining review of the quality of Poms received my puppies were still young and beautiful ! But I have to say they are still very beautiful at almost 6 years old but started having problems with there legs my jewel and Leonardo both had surgery on there legs at almost 2 and Leonardo had 2 bladder stone surgeries before 2 urs old . Now has to have surgery on his other leg! I love them so much and so glad I have them but I would not get another Pom from Jacklin ! My dogs have bad legs and trachea problems and are larger then I was told they would be and Jacklin told me I feed them to much ! I don't care about the size they are cause I rescued a 22 lb Pom and loved him so much .., but I would not be comfortable to promote this breeder and have the same problems my dogs have cause it's just so heart breaking and expensive! I purchased a Pom from Jacklin 2.5 years ago. When he came home I had him groomed. I groom my other Poms once a month. His fur was severely matted. His skin was so dry it looked like snow on the grooming table. Fast forward I got his coat in good shape. He then had a hernia and I had that repaired. The vet noticed baby teeth that never came out. So those were extracted. Early Feb of this year he had a lesion on his back. That needed to be removed. One week ago I was feeding my Poms dinner. He literally dropped dead in my kitchen. I'm horrified, depressed and had never been to this Yelp page. I now see others affected by Jacklin and her poor breeding. Charlie could never hold his head straight. It was always raised. I've never seen that before. Jacklin said it's a trait of show dogs. I've seen show dogs. They don't do this. I never saw the parents or any dog for that matter. I drove 8 hours one way to get him, only for her to leave when I arrived. I only dealt with her husband. This breeder is beyond negligent. She should be held accountable for bad breeding. I purchased Theo, my male Pomeranian, from Jacklin in June 2011. Aside from his amazing temperament and perfect behavior, he has had a lot of problems. He came to me with a bad ear infection and has since had significant hair loss (the vet suspects alopecia and we are currently going through the process of trying to eliminate if it is anything else), seizures, and low thyroid so he is on meds for the rest of his life for that. See the photo of him I added to this page. Theo's sire is supposedly Luck of the Draw and the dam was Coco Starlet. I bought him on June 12, 2011. I brought these issues up to Jacklin and she told me none of her pups have ever had alopecia. Obviously after reading these other reviews and speaking to a few other people who purchased from her, I know this is a lie. My friend Tania purchased a Pom from her too and she ended up with alopecia. This has to stop. This is unethical breeding and Jacklin should apologize to everyone and just stop breeding instead of pretending there is no problem and continuing to charge a small fortune for each sick dog. It's heartbreaking. She didn't have a Yelp page when I went to buy my dog. Hopefully other people can make better, more informed decisions because of our reviews. My 3-year-old female Pom is from Mathews Bitsy Poms and has alopecia. After reading all the Yelp reviews, I believe Jacklin Mathews to be an unethical breeder. I, too, got a weird story from Jacklin about the pedigree of my Pom. I tried to track my Pom's pedigree through AKC to no avail. That's only one reason I know Jacklin lied to me. My Pom is larger than other lines of Jacklin's Poms, weighing in at 10-1/2 pounds. Jacklin told me she would only get to 6-7 pounds. Apparently if you get one of her smaller Poms, they do not have alopecia in their pedigree. Those are the ones upon which Jacklin built her reputation as a good breeder. My Pom had a gorgeous coat up until about 2-1/2 years old, then it started thinning and is now ragged with alopecia on her back and bum. I am very disappointing in Jacklin. I heard from another breeder last year that Jacklin had been reported by this breeder for horrible breeding conditions and unethical breeding. Now I believe it. I believe Jacklin is deliberately deceiving people in order to continue breeding for Poms for $$$. I will NOT be recommending Bitsy Poms. read more

First off, I love my dog. He is the sweetest Pomeranian anyone can wish for. Unfortunately Jacklin lied about her breed lines. After about 18 months he began losing his hair. Slowly his hair began to fall out from his hind legs moving up towards his torso and up his neck and chest. He will be 8 years old soon and half of his hair has fallen out. The vet ran all medical tests across the board to make sure it was nothing that could be treated and cured. I am glad we were the ones my pom Jaxon ended up with as I am unsure what anyone else would have done with a dog that is supposed to have hair but suffers from alopecia. I did contact the breeder about this but she was so disinterested on mending her lies that I dropped it. Anyone out there trying to purchase from Bitsy Poms please be willing to love a pet with alopecia. Obviously your pet might end up perfect, but on the other hand it might grow up with Alopecia. Just be willing to keep and give your pet a home on either case. It is not fair for these sweet dogs to end up abandoned then killed just because they have no hair. read more

If you purchase a Pomeranian from bitsy poms MAKE SURE you get pet insurance with the highest possible coverage!!! I purchased my dog in June of 2014. I wasn't sure how many stars to give this breeder because I LOVE my dog to pieces! He's amazing, but he came with a lot of health issues! I decided two stars was fair. Some of his issues are common small breed problems and therefore possibly not Jacklyn's fault (but many of them are genetic, and a result of the breeding). From my own experience, and by reading several other reviews, it appears Jacklyn does not pay attention to health concerns or hereditary issues with the dogs she's breeding. Because of that, puppies we purchase could have a plethora of problems. My little guy is going on surgery #4 and he's only 14 months old. He needed surgery for baby teeth that were not going to come out on their own and his adult teeth all grew in leaving him with double rows of teeth. It wasn't an immediate problem, but would be in the future if left as is. He had to have six teeth surgically removed. Getting him neutered was not a quick and easy procedure as it should have been. His right testicle didn't drop (genetic). It was hiding inside him somewhere and they needed to surgically go in and find it. If left as is, future complications and problems were down the road! The biggest problem however has been luxating patellas. My dog's knee caps pop out of place causing great pain and discomfort ....to the point he will not walk because it hurts him so badly. He just had surgery on his right leg to correct this. He started showing the same signs on his left side but even worse because I can hear the popping sound whenever he moves his leg!! He will be going in for another surgery next week to correct the left leg. It's so sad! I am extremely grateful that I have pet insurance, as my dog's medical bills have totaled THOUSANDS of dollars! Bitsy poms has very well tempered, sweet, adorable pups and I don't regret getting my puppy, but I'm pretty disappointed with everything my baby has gone through! Its hard to say which problems are the fault of the breeder and which ones are coincidentally just small breed issues, but I probably would have gone somewhere else to purchase a puppy had I know the problems Jacklyn's dogs have. I just wanted to give a fair review/warning to anyone considering purchasing from this breeder! You will get a precious puppy for sure, but be prepared for potential health problems that could come with it. :( read more

I simply don't understand the bad reviews. My husband and I found Jacklyn two years ago on the Internet, drove from Vegas, and bought a Pom from her. One review said that her dam was Coco Starlet, well so was ours. Our Pom (Max) has a BEAUTIFUL coat, wonderful personality, and EXTREME teddy bear face!! We love him so much and thought that Jacklyn does a superb job at breeding Poms that we just bought another one from her! No, her Poms are not cheap, but that is because of her champion blood lines and her dedication to breeding top quality dogs. You want a cheap Pom? Go to a pet store the sells half breeds (and FYI...Jacklyn does NOT operate out of a store so I'm not sure why the map shows this is her location. NOT EVEN THE RIGHT PHONE NUMBER!) To the review that stated Jacklyn wanted outrageous amounts of money for paperwork, I see that no more than a misunderstanding on the buyers part. Claims of alopecia? I had to Google it myself. Seems to be common in dogs, and the most common cause looks to be mites. Even if a vet determines its an immune deficiency, are you sure you have a Pom that is 100% from her blood line? Do you really think she would risk her reputation? I am not a "friend" of Jacklyn's who is posting this just to improve her ratings. I am simply a very satisfied customer who is giving credit where credit is due. I will continue to purchase from her and refer her to anyone looking for a show stopping Pom. We purchased two Poms from Bitsy Poms almost 10 years ago. One of our dogs started losing his hair after about 8 years of age. We have had him tested for everything imaginable (thyroid, Cushings, complete blood workup, dermatologists, and the latest was a DNA "sensitivity" test to see what he could be allergic to). After reading some of the postings on this page, I am interested to see if anyone has found a reason for the hair loss. We have had two other Poms before these and neither one of them had hair loss. Now our other Pom is starting to lose his hair. I saw one picture in here that looks exactly like our one dog. It started with his back legs and butt and then went to his neck and now is going down his back. If anyone has an answer to this, please send me a message. read more

Over the years I have bought a few pom puppies from Bitsy Poms and have been pleased with them. her prices are quite reasonable. I have a, now, 10 year old drop dead gorgeous, smart female pom who had won ribbons and was even written up in the newspaper at an obedience trial as an amazing tricks dog. Now she's overweight and has a mild trachea problem. I don't blame the breeder. My father in law used to breed and show and gave us a pom pup as a wedding present. I've been hooked ever since. This was decades ago and even then my father in law would say that poms have been bred down in size within the same tight gene pool for so many years that they are called the heartbreak breed. They have common small breed congenital anomalies like small trachea, luxating patellas, alopecia, and common problem amongst tiny breed males is chrytorchidism. Even when a breeder tries to match a perfectly healthy pair to breed...these congenital anomalies may show up from an ancestor. It's difficult to successfully breed the small ones because they don't have the size/capacity for a full litter. Some can only produce 1 or 2 pups and they are so tiny at birth it's difficult to keep them alive. That's the heartbreak. I also have a tiny female, Peanut, that is a perfect show quality from Bitsy Poms that she was reluctant to sell but did so out of kindness since i was grieving a loss. That shows heart! All the dogs I've gotten from Bitsy Poms have been personality pluses. I am a fan. read more

We traveled from AZ to purchase two poms from this breeder for $1800 each. After about 8 months they both ended up with Alopecia (an inherited disease that results in hair loss). It is also called "'Black skin disease, look it up. Jacklin denied that she had ever had this occur to any of the dogs in her bloodline. Before the alopecia became apparent, friends of our also traveled from AZ and purchased a puppy from Jacklin. Funny, he he also has alopecia. We have spent thousands of $$ on vets, special diets, and various "solutions" to no avail. We requested a refund both but Jacklin cried "poor mouth" and would only offer another puppy if we returned the two we had purchased. We love our dogs and would not consider her proposal. I am convinced that she knew we would not take her offer because of our love for the dogs and had become so attached to them.Today both dogs have wear "onesies" to protect them from the sun.
