I finally tried their gyoza with garlic mayo, as a side. Gyoza was deep-fried - did not expect that - and good. Garlic mayo was very good...just a bit salty. Also, I got a stamp card.

Sadly, I have no photos of my food because well, I ate it before even thinking of taking a photo. So yeah, I believe this place deserves the 5 stars! Lol The prices and portions are priced very well and I mean the generous amount of rice and curry, totally worth it. The curry does have a spice to it but soo very good and the beef bowl, man... absolutely delicious. The service was quick and sufficient. Theres parking just for this place, luckily I came when it wasn't busy because I'm sure when it is, the parking can be pretty tight. It's those places where you'd drive past and probably not notice. Because I'm in Kalihi everyday and I barely noticed. Thankfully they have signs in front and I was like man I gotta try this place out one day. That day finally came and let me tell you, it's officially my favorite spot to go for curry close to home. I'm usually driving to aiea for curry house but man, I'm so glad I finally gave this place a chance. It gives hole in the wall vibes. Order ahead and take out for even quicker service.

Friendly, quick, and the food is ALWAYS so ono (good/tasty)!! Also offers 10% discounts to Military, Student, and Seniors (of course must have ID to show proof).

First time ordering here and I will be back for more. I ordered the tofu beef rice bowl and it was perfect. The tofu, the sauce and the this was just a medium size bowl. They also have a large. We didn't dine in and order door dash but everything came out perfect.

Teriyaki Chicken Bowl was very tasty. Fast and Friendly service from Akira San. I had a medium bowl and ate it all but can be shared. Great value!

I've noticed this place driving down Nimitz and was always curious about trying and finally did yesterday. Got the large tonkatsu curry bowl, came with a little side of pickled ginger and daikon. Overall it was good, tasty curry, crispy pork and lots of sticky rice. But it was a bit expensive at $20. Maybe in a sit down restaurant but for takeout idk, if you're frugal like me there are cheaper options.

I apologize in advance for the no pictures, but I had to stop and give a five star rating for this place because of several factors not only is the Food consistently good and worth the price point but the atmosphere there is awesome. It is very cute and quaint, usually you pick up, but you can also eat there if you wish as they have a very nice Setting for an industrial place in Kalihi. Also, what made me give the fire stars is the excellent customer service a great happy face that takes your order and serves up your food. The gentleman there seems thoroughly enjoying his job and it shows he is the sweetest nicest patient person with such a bubbly personality. Truly love this place highly recommended, so go get some food from this location again that person that works there just makes it five star worthy

On a nice holoholo, we were feeling hungry on our way home. A friend said his coworkers love this spot for takeout, so we all gave it a try. It's easy to find on Kalihi Street near the Nimitz intersection, behind Poke by the Pound. They have their own gated lot, easy to pull in to wait for to-go orders. They have a couple picnic tables at the back if you want to eat there. The restaurant is solely a walk up window, with a varied menu and clear prices; we felt everything was reasonable for the portion size and freshness. He gave us all a discount, which they advertise for seniors, students, and military (10% off). The food here is Japanese style curry rice dishes and meat bowls. I went with the large tempura shrimp bowl, side of kimchi, and free pickled daikon and ginger. Everything was delicious - sauces were great and it was filling for the low prices. My only complaint was everything tasted too salty, but that does pair well with a lot of drinks. If you're in the Kalihi area and looking for something delicious, simple, and reasonably priced, this is a great restaurant option.

    Beef bowl - so good!

I love a good beef bowl and I love the Yelp app because it allows me to find these hole-in-the-wall places that I'd likely never find on my own! This is a take-out place only. They only have one round table in their parking lot if you really want to eat there. The good news is that they do have parking available! They have a lot of menu options to choose from including udon, curry, chicken & beef bowls and side items like gyoza, etc. I came there for the beef bowl and decided on the mini, which was the perfect size for me! The beef is super tasty and they're generous with the amount. It is a bit fatty, but I guess that's what makes it so good. The rice is fresh and they give a lot of it! After I got my food and left, I realized they didn't give me red ginger. I was so bummed! Red ginger is a must with a beef bowl. I guess you need to ask for it before you leave. If you love beef bowls, this is the place!

$23 for large bowl had to go back to get more curry and hot sauce plus $1. Not enough curry or food for $24
    Lou S.

Overpriced, not enough curry. No place to sit and eat. Not satisfied . Also no trash cans to throw away your rubbish.

Beef Curry Rice Bowl w/1 Ontama Egg (L)

I missed this restaurant after the original Shirokiya closed. Fast forward, I saw they relocated to Kalihi but haven't made a real effort to stop by due to the traffic in the area. It wasn't until I was in the area the day before Thanksgiving and after the lunch rush that I decided to go check them out. Sure enough, minimum traffic and their private lot was empty! Their lot accommodates a few vehicles but do be careful as they have a sign starting they are not responsible for any damages caused on property. There are two windows when you go to the front of the restaurant. The one on the right is to order and the one on the left is the pick up window. They have a huge and easy to read menu with photos. After a quick look at the menu, I ordered their Beef Curry Rice Bowl w/1 Ontama Egg (L) and an Ontama Beef Rice Bowl (M) for my +1. Each order comes with a free container of Red Ginger and container of Fukujinzuke (Daikon Pickles). I'm so happy I added on the Ontama Egg! It completed the bowl for me. The meat was flavorful and the curry wasn't runny. It was thick and portion size was just right for the amount of rice in the bowl. I'm Chinese and still have the stamp card from Shirokiya but according to the cashier, it's no longer valid. Boo! Make sure to get their new stamp card!

Takeout lunch in Kalihi, Honolulu, Hawaii... Sometimes I have to trick my mom into eating. This time, I showed her photos of food from Matsuzaka-Tei to get her to choose something. She finally decided on a Beef Bowl with Mapo Tofu! Yay! LOCATION: almost on the corner of Nimitz Highway and Kalihi Street. PARKING: enter the free parking lot from Kalihi Street SERVICE: pleasant, but needs reminding about the Loyalty Card and the choice of ginger vs. fukujinzuke with each bowl. FOOD: I was super happy when mom took a bite and exclaimed, "This is good!" Whew! She also said that the portion was too big for her. I replied, "Save the leftovers for dinner!" I had the medium Shrimp tempura bowl with beef (because the medium has two shrimps)! I kinda wished that there was less sauce on the tempura. The beef was thin and tender! I also ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry. My brother-in-law inhaled it. He said it was delicious! (I stole a piece when he went outside to walk the dogs! Hee hee! Yes, it was yummy!) I'm more likely to return because of the Loyalty Card... Haha! And I'll do takeout again because the outside seating isn't the best... LOL!

I have gone at peak times and where there is nobody inside. I visit this location because it's the closet and on the way usually but you WILL wait over 30 minutes in the drive thru or curbside. And at least 15-20 inside the restaurant for anything including a food item. I worked at McDonald's for 4 years in high school, and I just can't imagine what is slowing them down THIS MUCH. I also observe that they complete their orders on their order screens before the order is complete in order to shorten their times. Anyway, thank you for my 99c ice coffee. For reference. I made a mobile order at 945am, arrived at curbside at 9:50am, and I am still waiting for my order of 2 coffees and 3 breakfast platters at 10:21am... The chicken skin had a nice crunch to it and the meat was juicy (not super oily, but juicy.) The mashed potatoes and gravy weren't bad. They were not super fluffy but a little more on the dense side. (Nothing bad, just dense.) The gravy was somewhat runny with just the right amount of saltiness. The spaghetti was surprisingly good! It's been a few years since I've gone to a Jolly Bee and I had imagined the spaghetti to only be sweet and savory. It was actually pretty good! (Not in an Italian way though. It was a little spicy, which I loved! I wasn't expecting it to be spicy so it was a very pleasant surprise! It was a tad sweet...just the right amount! (There isn't a 3-piece combo on the menu, but the server was kind enough to accommodate my request for an extra piece of chicken.) It came with a container of gravy that made me wonder what it was for, immediately. Then I remembered all the commercials and YouTube videos where food reviewers either slathered their chicken with the gravy or they dunked it into the gravy. I was so hungry that I forgot for a few seconds that the gravy was for the chicken, thus I drank most of the gravy!! The dining area is constantly cleaned and draws a diverse crowd. Because it is at the beginning of downtown it does attract some homeless people as well. But, that's life in the big city, right? When I went to the restroom I found it amusing that a male Jollibee employee was changing his shirt. It seemed he was done for the day. Overall, it was a pleasant meal. Little overdue of a review but here we go lol…read more. Diners has been a staple for my family & I , and I'm sure many other families on island for YEARS. Our family's go to was always Cheeseburger and yellow sauce with fries! As time and society evolved , so did Diners, since they became "Upscale" and added more things to their menu. I have tried their Grilled lobster plate more than once from their Upscale menu in the past and I think during that time it was $15? Not sure if it's still that price, but for that price it was a winner! Lobster + salad and rice ? What more can you ask for since that's basically a steal in today's economy. Anyway , I was in the area recently and decided on diners for dinner. I was really craving ahi katsu, unfortunately my go to spot was already closed since I decided on dinner a little after 8pm ish? So I thought .. well diners has ahi katsu supposedly .. why not give it a try. I wasn't expecting much since it was Diner's BUT needless to say.. their ahi katsu is DELICIOUS. Seasoned well and cooked to perfection! I love the sauce they drizzle on the katsu. I should've asked for extra sauce on the side had I known it was gonna be yummy! But that's something to keep note of on my next visit in the future. I definitely would order this plate again! And continue to adventure out on their menu lol. A tip to keep in mind : they do have signs posted by their windows to be patient when ordering because they do take a bit to make and give you your order since they are always short staffed. And there's normally alot of people waiting or ordering since lots come to this establishment right after work or in between work or just simply there for a bite to grab. So prepare to wait .. but sometimes you can be lucky where it doesn't take as long. It does truly depend on time and the day I guess. Also one last thing, my personal opinion , I think Diners is worth grabbing food from. Whether you're hungry , in the area or wanting to grind. Some people have mixed reviews or bad experiences but me personally , I always had a good outcome. Oh also before I forget their steak is delicious too (LOL) , never ordered it for myself but I shared some of it with one of my relatives who ordered their steak before. Give this place a shot!

I added swiss cheese for 75 cents & subbed red onions for grilled onion for 50 cents. It's a pretty big burger & very juicy as well as messy. Plenty of napkins are needed for sure! Shrimp burger - ono! It's on a brioche bun and the shrimp is formed into a patty with a very light coating, not a totally breaded patty. The patty fills the whole bun so you get shrimp on every bite. Also served with lettuce, tomato, & red onions. The garlic aioli sauce makes this a tasty and flavorful sandwich. Butter lobster roll - I had this on my first visit and the price is a little steep at $23.90 but it was surprisingly one of the best lobster rolls I've ever had. It's not a big sandwich. The roll is not even 6" but it is packed with tender pieces of real lobster - 3.5 oz - topped with melted butter. The sandwich is a little on the salty side but was still ono. Lemon tart - had this on my first visit but didn't see it on the menu this time. It had homemade lemon curd in a sweet tart topped by whipped cream for $5. It was a good sized dessert easily shared by two. Overall, a great place to eat, ono sandwiches, reasonable prices, and friendly customer service. They do sell out of items early so best to get their when they open. Everything is cooked to order so sometimes the wait can be 10 - 15 minutes, but it's worth the wait. I did inquire where they are moving to and was told they are still looking. I sure hope this little place continues to stay in business because they have something good going. Support local!
