I love this place. The original location is in Pearl City and they opened up a spot on Kalihi street. Delicious authentic japanese comfort food. I like their curry bowls and shrimp tempura beef bowls. Reasonably priced and I appreciate that they have parking. Its a take out place and its very easy to phone in an order and pick up. Sadly, I have no photos of my food because well, I ate it before even thinking of taking a photo. So yeah, I believe this place deserves the 5 stars! Lol The prices and portions are priced very well and I mean the generous amount of rice and curry, totally worth it. Normally I love to eat the Ontama Teriyaki Chicken Bowl - mini. I got the medium by mistake, but I thought it's all good there's 2 eggs. Asked for the ginger and pickles too, which as always, I never get. Unfortunately, it looked like 2 eggs - smh - nope. One egg split to look like 2. The taste is still good but for $18.80 . I look forward to the egg breaking into the rice. Nope. Oh well, this place has great tasting food, but to cut corners - again smh. I'm disappointed. I apologize in advance for the no pictures, but I had to stop and give a five star rating for this place because of several factors not only is the Food consistently good and worth the price point but the atmosphere there is awesome. It is very cute and quaint, usually you pick up, but you can also eat there if you wish as they have a very nice Setting for an industrial place in Kalihi. Also, what made me give the fire stars is the excellent customer service a great happy face that takes your order and serves up your food. The gentleman there seems thoroughly enjoying his job and it shows he is the sweetest nicest patient person with such a bubbly personality. On a nice holoholo, we were feeling hungry on our way home. A friend said his coworkers love this spot for takeout, so we all gave it a try. It's easy to find on Kalihi Street near the Nimitz intersection, behind Poke by the Pound. They have their own gated lot, easy to pull in to wait for to-go orders. They have a couple picnic tables at the back if you want to eat there. The restaurant is solely a walk up window, with a varied menu and clear prices; we felt everything was reasonable for the portion size and freshness. He gave us all a discount, which they advertise for seniors, students, and military (10% off). The food here is Japanese style curry rice dishes and meat bowls. I went with the large tempura shrimp bowl, side of kimchi, and free pickled daikon and ginger. Everything was delicious - sauces were great and it was filling for the low prices. My only complaint was everything tasted too salty, but that does pair well with a lot of drinks. If you're in the Kalihi area and looking for something delicious, simple, and reasonably priced, this is a great restaurant option. read more

I love a good beef bowl and I love the Yelp app because it allows me to find these hole-in-the-wall places that I'd likely never find on my own! This is a take-out place only. They only have one round table in their parking lot if you really want to eat there. The good news is that they do have parking available! They have a lot of menu options to choose from including udon, curry, chicken & beef bowls and side items like gyoza, etc. I came there for the beef bowl and decided on the mini, which was the perfect size for me! The beef is super tasty and they're generous with the amount. It is a bit fatty, but I guess that's what makes it so good. The rice is fresh and they give a lot of it! I missed this restaurant after the original Shirokiya closed. Fast forward, I saw they relocated to Kalihi but haven't made a real effort to stop by due to the traffic in the area. It wasn't until I was in the area the day before Thanksgiving and after the lunch rush that I decided to go check them out. Sure enough, minimum traffic and their private lot was empty! Their lot accommodates a few vehicles but do be careful as they have a sign starting they are not responsible for any damages caused on property. There are two windows when you go to the front of the restaurant. The one on the right is to order and the one on the left is the pick up window. They have a huge and easy to read menu with photos. After a quick look at the menu, I ordered their Beef Curry Rice Bowl w/1 Ontama Egg (L) and an Ontama Beef Rice Bowl (M) for my +1. Each order comes with a free container of Red Ginger and container of Fukujinzuke (Daikon Pickles). I'm so happy I added on the Ontama Egg! It completed the bowl for me. The meat was flavorful and the curry wasn't runny. It was thick and portion size was just right for the amount of rice in the bowl. I'm Chinese and still have the stamp card from Shirokiya but according to the cashier, it's no longer valid. Boo! Make sure to get their new stamp card! read more

She finally decided on a Beef Bowl with Mapo Tofu! Yay! LOCATION: almost on the corner of Nimitz Highway and Kalihi Street. PARKING: enter the free parking lot from Kalihi Street SERVICE: pleasant, but needs reminding about the Loyalty Card and the choice of ginger vs. fukujinzuke with each bowl. FOOD: I was super happy when mom took a bite and exclaimed, "This is good!" Whew! She also said that the portion was too big for her. I replied, "Save the leftovers for dinner!" I had the medium Shrimp tempura bowl with beef (because the medium has two shrimps)! I kinda wished that there was less sauce on the tempura. The beef was thin and tender! I also ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry. My brother-in-law inhaled it. He said it was delicious! (I stole a piece when he went outside to walk the dogs! Hee hee! Yes, it was yummy!) I think their food is decent, but a bit on the expensive side. That said, the main reason for my 2 star review is because the man working was rude. I doubt I'll be going back. Some people use their stalls for the Poke shop next door and its one of their pet peeves and you will hear them yell out to the car blocking their entrance to park on the other side of the building on Nimitz. I have a coworker who says this is the best beef bowl on the island. I'm not like a huge fan of Japanese style beef bowls, but I was in Kalihi and need to kill some time, so I looked this place up. It comes right up when you search "beef bowls". Of course. With all the construction and traffic in Kalihi on weekday afternoons I wasn't completely thrilled about not knowing exactly where I was going. I even passed it once, so just like be on the look out or look at the yelp pics to see what you are looking for before you go. It is on the ewa side of the street if you are going makai bound. That's probably the best way to get there instead of trying to hold up traffic if you are trying to come in from the nimitz side. Anyway. This is like a glorified food truck. They have some make shift tables in the parking lot, but other than that it is an order and pick up window. Nothing wrong with that, just don't expect a sit down restaurant. They offer a variety of bowls and they come in small, medium and large sizes. There is both an udon option and a rice option, so the selection can satisfy most carb-loving people. I chose a mini beef bowl with gyoza. I think it was the best japanese beef bowl I've had in Hawaii. I honestly don't know where else you would go to buy this other than like.... 7-11 maybe? I thought the beef was pretty flavorful and my gyoza were hot and crispy. They even came with a little packet of gyoza sauce. I wonder if you can get the gyoza by itself..... I saw they also have curry and tempura. I'm tempted to come back. I think the prices are a little high, but again, I don't know where else you can buy this if you have a craving for it. Kind of a hole in the wall place located at the corner on Kalihi Street/ Nimitz Highway. Most wouldn't know it was there if it were not for the huge signage on the structure. All 3 of us ordered the curry with beef and I added a 15pc takoyaki. The curry beef was quite tasty and very delicious! Very close to how my dad used to make it. Meat was cut very thinly and that's what made it very appetizing to the eyes. The takoyaki was good for what it was. Prices were just perfect and priced right. Not sure if he was the owner or chef or both, but he was very nice and really gave us really good service. We got our food within minutes to take home. They do have a place in the parking lot area with a table to eat at, but it's outdoors and under a garage area. Pulling your car up to this take-out, is not gonna be the sexiest experience of your life..... I was softly mumbling to myself...."Really?"...but parked my car and placed my order, and it was ready in 90 seconds. It was so dang good, I returned the next day. It's old Hawaii, but with fair prices. Went to pick up lunch for myself and coworkers. One of my coworkers ordered all the food from Door Dash app to be picked up but NOT delivered (everybody knows you can do this) I guess the guy working was maybe the owner. Nasty attitude! He wouldn't give me the food and I bought EXTRA food on top of it supporting his business. He only gave me the food I paid for at the register. So when I called my coworker back (the guy who ORDERED the food and NAME IS ON THE ORDER). The owner started to get aggressive me. Pointing his DIRTY finger in my face, ignoring my coworker telling him he will send confirmation of the order to me. So he takes the food and put it back. I then told him I'm not leaving till we get our food we all paid for. He then threw all the food at me and we got into a Shouting match. Told me not to come back. TRUST ME....I'm not coming back anyways because not only was his attitude NASTY. The food wasn't even all that great. My beef was cold and so were my Gyozas. See if the owner wasn't so RUDE and actually listened to the people who ordered his food he wouldn't get this review. Didn't even finish this bowl. I was working at a nearby coffee shop all day and before going to Matsuzaka, coffee was the only thing I had consumed the whole day (It was around 3 pm at this point). I called in my order from the coffee shop and picked it up 20 minutes later. This spot is easily missed and the traffic pattern here makes it really annoying to get here. There is a small private lot just for Matsuzaka and luckily for me, there was no one else in the lot when I got there. I can imagine things get a bit tight during busy hours. We ordered the beef bowl and mapo beef bowl, both with egg. There are 3 sizes: small, medium, and large. Both our bowls were medium and satisfying (even with this being my first meal of the day!) I would get a large bowl to share between 2 people or if I wanted to have leftovers. The price is a little steep but my main comparison I have is when I got these types of beef bowls in Japan and they were only $3-5. Overall, friendly and fast service. I got their medium size bowl which looked more like a mini and that was about $17. Their curry is pretty good though but wish it came with side of Japanese pickles or something. Not the best and not the worst donburis we've had. If you have been to Japan, then you'll be familiar with Yoshinoya or Matsuya ot Sukiya. You can get a beef bowl there for $3-4. and it will be super fresh, filling, and tastes sooo good. Anyways, our donburis were ok. The meat was good and had lots of flavor, but the rice was kinda hard and didn't seem fresh. They also messed up our order... We ordered 1 beef bowl and 1 chicken and shrimp bowl. The egg was one of the best I've ever had. And the rice had just the right texture. The gyoza was perfect if you like it deep fried. And the shrimp tempura udon was great. The tempura was cooked perfectly and the udon was soft without being soggy. The broth was good too. The sukiyaki meat was simple and flavorful. Not too much juice on top. Ohh man this place really fills a void and like in many Asian countries they do one type of dish and they do it WELL! Ontama Spicy Miso Chicken Rice Bowl, first time trying this one out and it was very good. Not overly spicy to drown out the other flavors. If you are into flamin' hot then maybe just ask for more spiciness. I also tried the Tai-Yaki and that was very good also. I brought home the Shrimp Tempura Beef Bowl for my mom and didn't hear much except "yummm" from her while she ate. My very first visit here. There was no line and parking was a breeze. Their menu is huge! So it was a little difficult to make up my mind. I finally settled on their special. A simple shrimp tempura with beef udon . The broth was very clean and tasty. The noodles were al dente which is how I like them. The shrimp tempura was battered well and crispy. It reminded me of typical Japanese street food. The beef however was a little bland but all in all I would rate the dish a solid 6 I will definitely half to go back and try some of the other menus items. And maybe do a review update. read more
