It was in Kalihi and kind of close to this place so decided to drop by just in case they still had a good selection of choices since it was after 12pm...nope! I didn't want to go somewhere else so just ordered a few items that were left. I did enjoy the food I chose and my husband did too. Thought the prices were about the same as other delicatessen's so that's a plus. A friend recommended their fried tofu with green beans so I will come back for that at an earlier time and I'll have more to choose from. This place is located on Gulick Avenue in a residential area. My husband parked across the street from this place. When I crossed the street, I called him to let him know there's a small parking lot on the right of their building...yay!

Garlic chicken, shrimp/tofu broccoli, and chow fun

The food is very tasty won't fail you that department. As texture wise, most of garlic chicken skin was mushy and not crispy...maybe the heat made it soggy. I was able find tidbit crunchy pieces. The broccoli dish had shrimp and tofu ad sopping up the gravy. Broccoli maintained it's nice green color and crunchiness...love that sound! The broccoli dish and chow fun compliments the garlic chicken with their own perfect flavors. Lunch time is filled with dishes galore! Service is friendly and great! Ambiance is bustling with customers, but be able to communicate what you want...come on down! Ciao!

"Roger's can't sell chicken around here, we got chicken places on every block." Cosmo Kramer, Seinfeld Well, certainly not on Gulick Ave. Garlic, Spicy, Shoyu, Fried, and katsu; they got it covered! da Scene: Mondays are rough in town... most Okazuya are closed from Waialae to downtown, gotta head to North School Street to find good stuff. My go to in this part of town is Gulick. da Grub: got 2 bentos and 1 lg. Box of overflow. You got the standards: fried chicken, chow fun/mein, Teri beef, shrimp tempura, ahi Teri & spam. But my add on's make the Bento "deluxe" and enough for a 2nd round later. Add On box: shiso musubi, shrimp and veg. tempura, garlic chicken, and couple hash patties. Mmmmmm! da Service: Long line and but moves pretty good.Ladies are nice and quick, but don't linger too much picking!!

If you enjoy old-school Okazuya-style spots, Gulick Delicatessen is a solid choice. They offer a huge variety of items, and it's easy to end up with a full plate before you know it. Everything is fresh, reasonably priced, and very nostalgic if you grew up eating this kind of food. Parking can be a mix--there are a few reserved stalls and some street parking nearby, but it can get busy depending on the time of day. Overall, a classic Kalihi stop and worth returning to so you can try more of their options. Support local!

I have eaten here since I was a kid and my parents use to take me now I take my kids here food is always prepared fresh and so delicious. They have so much options to choose i can't express how good it is cause you gotta go there and try it and thank me later for having a happy tummy. Service was fast and efficient. The store has a nice kick to it feels like old school.

Gulick had been there for the longest time I known. We had business in middle st when we found it mid 70's I could be mistaken when they opened up. Opens at 05:00 am now opens until 3:00pm! Go early their choices of great eats gone in ton time! BBQ Meat or teriyaki beef too salty or marinated in shoyu too long I'm not sure but it goes well with Chowfun noodles not salty at all. Their potato, macaroni salads and namasu are the best tasty salads I know! The large size egg rolls are sold quickly. Goes very well with any order one chooses! Hamburger patties are deli's but today's burnt in the back otherwise edible! Eggplant with pieces of satiated teriyaki beef cut into small parts outmost delicious vegetables stir fry I had in ages! The amount of food given price is right! We shall have it for dinner as well!

Gobo, shrimp broccoli, teri hamburger, fried rice

Good 'ol Gulick where the food is delicious and the service is great! Favorites: teri hamburger, gobo, potato salad Also recommended: spicy chicken (has bones though), tamagoyaki, corned beef hash patty, cone sushi, namasu The only item I can't recommend is the fried tofu with green beans because I once got a batch with really hard pieces. If you do not see something out that you've had before (and they aren't about to close for the day), there's a fair chance the next batch is already being prepared in the back, so just ask and they can often grab it for you. There's also a menu of set bentos to choose from. Parking is limited but there is no dining in, so it turns over quickly.

Update on Gulick Deli this morning I stopped to get breakfast for my co-workers . I got there once they opened at 5am and I was the only customer. Normally there always a line , the service was fast and friendly and I ordered 4x the same plate . Garlic chicken, shrimp tempura, chow mein, egg omelette and Musubi . Support local

I love going to Gulick. The service is fast and the staff are friendly. The food is always good. They make the best chow funn. My favorite is the garlic chicken. The place is very clean. It's our favorite go-to delicatessen!

Wednesday July 9, 2025 I have been coming here for years and I still love it! Park on the street fast kind or in their small private lot of 4-5 cars? The food is good and so many choices to choose from. Service is fast and friendly. I will definitely continue to come back here and to support local businesses.

I wanted to come here because I wanted to try okazuya and you can't get that on the mainland. It's a very casual place. Hours are limited which does make it hard to come here, but it's worth it and close to Waikiki. Ordering is very casual. You have to go up to see what you want. We got a huge variety to try a bunch of things. Chicken: 8/10. Got the shoyu chicken and the spicy chicken. Both were amazing Nishime: 7/10. Unique and not something I eat often but I'm so glad we got it. Tofu: 7/10. Good but nothing special Chow fun: 6/10. Bit bad but nothing stand out Overall, fun and good to try. We had so much that we couldn't finish it all but it's hard to resist when there's so much variety. Cone sushi: 6/10. I like inari and the portion is a decent size but nothing crazy.

Chow Fun, Green Beans & Pork, Fried Tofu, & Shoyu Chicken

Gulick is one of my favorite okazuya's. They have a great variety of food selections to choose from and bento options as well. Their staff is very friendly and the line moves rather quickly even during very busy times. There are no tables for sitting. It is basically a grab and go. I would recommend not going too late because they do run out of food after the lunch rush and your selections then become slim. I usually order the same items when I go. I like to order their chow fun, spicy minute chicken which is not spicy at all but very tasty, their green beans and pork stir fry, maki sushi, and their namasu. If there is no spicy minute chicken, you can't go wrong with their shoyu chicken. In my opinion, there really isn't anything here that isn't good and I feel that everyone can find something they will like. Sometimes, they have special items and the food is usually consistent. I would definitely recommend it and say that is is worth a try if you haven't tried it yet.

Although the restaurant is not very big, but it's cozy and feels like it's in Japan. It's one of a few authentic Japanese restaurants that's located in the Kalihi/Dillingham area, away from Ward/Kakaako. I've only been there during lunch time, so my go to is always the lunch box set. It comes with 2 choice of proteins + rice + miso soups + salad + tempura. The tempura vegetables is good! Very Crunchy and favorable. The shrimp tempura is not as good the vegetable tempura. The shrimp is soft inside which is like eating a mushy meat. The butterfish & salmon is pretty good portion, but it doesn't have enough flavor. The teriyaki ahi, I will not get that one. The ahi is overcooked that the fish texture is hard. It has no flavor. However, with this price that comes w/ 2 options of proteins + miso soups + other sides, it's a deal that can't find in town nowadays. It's reasonable and affordable. Overall, I will give it a 4/5 with the reasonable price that comes w/ a decent portion of the food for a lunch combo.

There are several choices to choose from. I should have taken a picture of the menu. Oh well. Next time. The lunch box also includes edamame, cabbage and pickled cabbage. Miso soup which is really good. You might say the portion size isn't huge but for me, it was good. For the price and the quality of food it's well worth it. I normally forget to ask what our server's name was but she was so nice that I did this time around. Her name is Cris. She's very nice and always smiling. She kept our water glasses filled as well as our hot Japanese tea. Really nice person. As for the ambiance it's like any other restaurant where everyone is talking story and us just having a good time. If you're in the mood for Japanese food or sushi/ sashimi this is a nice place to go to. My friend Karl had their chirashi bowl and it looks really good. I will get that the next time I'm there.

It was his dream to open his own authentic Japanese restaurant using his special omakase experience from Japan and one of the first authentic sushi restaurants in Honolulu. It was a concept of "bringing Japan's finest to Hawaii" with a desire to "build a bridge between the two cultures of Japan and Hawaii." In 2018, operations were taken over by Testsuya Matsuda. A 2nd location was opened in Kahala in Jan 2024 by Hiroshima Mazda, whose specialty is traditional Japanese sushi (or omakase). Yohei Sushi 's menu offerings include: * Teishoku (or set meal). Comes with miso soup, rice, Japanese pickles, cold soba noodles, seasonal side dish. Main entrees are sashimi, tempura, maguro, misoyaki butterfish, ahi steak, saba. Salmon, ahi belly, katsu, and more. * Sushi Bar. With miso soup. Menu offerings are deluxe & standard assorted sushi, maguro don, Chirashi sushi. * Noodles. Choice of udon or soba with various combinations, e.g., nabeyaki, tempura, tororo, tanuki, zaru, kitsune, tori, tukimi, kake, and ojiya udon. Also, combo meals of tendon/noodle, sushi/noodle; and donburi of unaju, oyako don and ten-ju. * Side order & ala carte. Includes sashimi, chawanmushi, ika, shinkomori, murokyu, soft shell crab, miuzuku, Hiyahakko, edamame, tempura. Ahi belly katsu, misoyaki butterfish, saba, seafood tempura, maguro temprta, ahi steak, salmon. We've had the following: * Tendon and Noodle. Deep fried tempura of shrimp and assorted veggies in a rice bowl with sauce & hot udon. Very filling and tasty! * Tempura Teishoku. This teishoku had 3 large pieces of fried tempura shrimp and assorted veggies, e.g., carrot, eggplant, green beans, pumpkin, that were light and non-oily. Our teishoku meals came with pickled veggies, cold soba, rice, and miso soup with lots of wakame and radish sprouts. Very flavorful! They also offered a complimentary birthday scoop of ice cream with a dollop of an as a topping, which was refreshing and paired well! * Maguro Tempura Teishoku. Hubby's choice of fried tempura tuna set, and he noted that there were 8 large tender pieces of maguro that was lightly fried and non-oily. Very delicious and filling! * Unagi nigiri. The unagi was so flaky, tender, and light and had the right amount of sauce. Loved it! The presentation of the meals was beautifully plated with real, authentic Japanese small dish bowls and plates. The food was of good quality and very flavorful! Customer service was excellent! Diners are greeted by staff upon entering and thanked when leaving. The old-time servers were very patient, attentive, welcoming, and gracious! Our food orders came out in a timely manner, and the servers, with smiles, frequently asked if everything was okay and if we needed anything else. Hours of operation are: lunch daily from 11a to 2p, dinner from 5p to 9p, closed Wed. Happy hour is from Thurs to Tues from 1:30p to 5p. Located in Kokea Center that looks like a run-down strip mall at Dillingham Blvd and Kokea St, the restaurant interior has a great ambiance as if you were dining in Japan, as it is comfortable and welcoming. It was amazing to see almost every table was taken by dining customers. Reservations are a must, as people are turned away. Good thing I called for lunch reservations at 12:15p on a weekday, which was tha last table available. And the restaurant was packed the entire time that we were there! I ended up getting the BBQ Chicken Teishoku meal which included a salad, miso soup, white rice, & tsukemono. My friend - Gary T. ended up getting a combination plate of BBQ Chicken & Shrimp Tempura. What can I say about da grub? Simply O.U.T.S.T.A.N.D.I.N.G!!! My BBQ Chicken came out on a hot sizzling platter, & underneath the BBQ Chicken there was grilled onions. Yum! The chicken skin was crispy, and the sauce was deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelicious! Nicely executed! My friend also enjoyed his meal & mention to me that he was also glad to try this place, as he's never been here before. Service here was on point, as the waitress was friendly & efficient. Parking here is a bit challenging, as there are only 4 parking stalls infront of the restaurant. If you're unlucky to get one of the premium parking stalls, street parking is your only other option. The decor at this restaurant is definitely old skool. If your dig old skool nostalgia like me, then ya gotta check out Yagura Restaurant!

This place is definitely a throwback. You can feel that vibe once you walk through the doors. Quickly got seated and served water and tea (which I really appreciated). Some places don't offer it or don't even have it. The menu is quite extensive. I settled on the Teishoku with Sashimi, salmon and teri beef. They brought out the miso soup (not the kind out of a tube) and the rice before the meal arrived. I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the salmon, most places that I go to it's pretty small. I could only eat half of it. The portions sizes for all the dishes were good. I actually had to take home some of the teri beef too. Kind of bummed that I hadn't been to this place 20 years ago. I guess like they say, better late than never. I will be back.

There is no dedicated parking garage so it's either street parking or any of the open lots nearby. First of all, let's talk about the decor. The entrance and lobby area has concrete walls covered in vintage Japanese movie posters, Japanese decor and artifacts lining the shelves, and illuminated LED blue and hot pink lights hanging from the ceiling. The abstract art and interior decor feels like an underground anime bar and gives off relaxing and chill vibes. You can definitely tell that the owner put a LOT of thought into creating the ambiance he wanted to portray. Walking further into the restaurant is the bar seating area. The menu is izakaya-style, focusing on small flavorful plates. Each dish was explained to us in depth on where the fish came from (flown in), how it was prepared, and what made it so special. Every dish was tasty and filling, though my favorite dish was the toro! It was soft, buttery, and melted in my mouth. This place is pricey ($150 per person) but definitely worth it for the food and the experience. The service is excellent - the owner and the other employees were attentive, personable, and treated us like valued guests.

Sushi counter has 8 seats and there are some additional tables. Hiro is planning to do some pretty cool things with the space-- so fun! FOOD: Amazing. The first course included saba, which Hiro prepared exceptionally well. The other components of the first dish were tasty too. For the nigiri, our favorites were the chutoro and otoro (unsurprisingly). There was also salmon nigiri with pesto which was unique, but not our favorite. We noticed that Hiro adds additional flavoring components to good quality fish/seafood.. the flavors all complemented each other well, without overpowering the fish. SERVICE: Good. Hiro was chef, waiter, dishwasher, everything (he said he does this on certain nights when it's slower). He juggled all the duties well. The courses were presented at a nice pace and our waters were filled regularly. OVERALL: Wonderful experience. We appreciated Hiro's personalization and flair. It was also fun talking story with him! Plus, BYOB! He said he plans to keep the omakase area BYOB too. We definitely plan to return.

Glad we had a reservation (even though we went for an early lunch). The place hasn't changed, the decor is the same What was nice was that there were a lot of wait help so service, even when it was busy, was attentive. Food was plentiful. Previously I had ordered the teishoku tempura but next time I'll order the tempura and side of rice. My sister did this and she had such a large serving of various tempura. I think there was four shrimp tempura (the teishoku didn't have as much. Most of the time I've been here the parking was available. But because there are so many other restaurants and stores the parking lot was usually pretty full but perhaps because we were lucky or early there were many spaces. I keep telling myself I need to order bitter melon. But I never do. Maybe next time
