Used to be my favorite place for sushi. Felt so at home here and we went all the time. Loved the BYOB aspect and the sushi chef Sho always served the best fish. They tried to make improvements by renovating the counter which was okay but honestly I liked the other classic look where we could see what kind of fish was available. They also stopped the BYOB because they started to sell alcohol. Actually you can still BYOB but the corkage fee is ridiculously high so not worth paying it. Despite these changes I was still willing to make this our go to place for sushi. My low rating is because they ruined the place by making it MANDATORY to order the omakase. I don't want to be forced to get the omakase when I know what I like to eat and that's what I want to order. I've been going here for so many years and I am truly disappointed that loyal patronage means nothing to this family owned business. Sho is still awesome and I'm sorry that he has to be subjected to these changes too. He seemed so much happier before they made these so called "improvements ". If they change their policy back to allow people to order Ala carte without mandating the omakase I would return. Not sure if that will ever happen. Went to the sushi bar for the first time....lets just say...I will be back...for $90 per person it's a omakase. 14 pieces of nigiri and 4 items from the kitchen. You can do byob and there is a 14.00 or 15.00 corkage. But they do have sake, wine and beer . Everything was superb! Fish was so fresh. Service was stellar!!! It's been to so long since I last dined at Natsunoya Tea House. They have been around and are known to have hosted many weddings and banquets. Did you know tucked within is a sushi bar that seats 12 diners? It was my first time dining at the sushi counter and the experience was unforgettable. You have the options of ordering omakase, nigiri, hand rolls, and cooked items from the kitchen. Everything was good and no complaints. I've been here a number of times over the years, and I must say, it's a wonderful place to enjoy a special occasion! I had a surprise baby shower here in one of private cottages, attended a company holiday party, and hosted my son's first birthday party here. All were outstanding experiences! The food here is high quality and crafted carefully. Many people say their shrimp tempura is the best they've ever had. I have to agree that it's quite good and fresh! We recently booked the Nigo room upstairs for a 1st birthday party. What I especially love is that you can bring your own pupu, desserts. and drinks! They provide ice for .50 cents a guest, which is so reasonable! When we arrived, everything was already set! The AC was on and running cold. The extra tables I requested were already set up with tablecloths. Even the ice water and hot tea they provide were out. That was fabulous! We arrived an hour early to set up and with all our extra hands, that was enough time. The room can seat up to 50, and we had about 35. I probably wouldn't push it past 40. Oh, and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that the view from in there is absolutely stunning! Nearly 360 degrees of ocean and urban Honolulu! Breathtaking! We choose buffet A, which was $32/person. The food spread was delicious! We had rice, noodles, macaroni salad, fruit, regular salad, hibachi chicken, agedashi tofu, teriyaki beef, and shrimp and vegetable tempura. Our room attendant was thoughtful, polite, prompt, and checked in on us many times. I loved how homey the room felt. We were upstairs and had our own bathroom. It felt nice and secluded from others. It's high time I update this review with the happenings: Preface to say that during the Pandemic, Natsunoya was my place to pick up ready made food, aka bento boxes. After the Panedemic; regular catered dinners resumed including the Furo-Ba Sushi room Finally!!!!!! after 15 years my dining partners and I had a meal at the Furo-Ba sushi room. Reservations recommended because Furo-Ba is not open everyday (Wednesday-Saturday open 5-9 pm) . There are 12 seats that make up the Sushi bar and 2 high tops that would seat an additional 4 people. So- therein lies a more important reason for your reservation. In addition to the sushi and sashimi menu, there are kitchen items you can order. We had the agedashi tofu, hamachi kama, chicken karaage, soft shell crab, veggie and shrimp tempura and the infamous sashimi omakase and all dishes pretty darn good. I'm not even going to discuss the price! Hint- another reason to dine there. Oh oh! Don't let me forget! it's a BYOB location I am not going to be a stranger to Natsunoya ever again! Six stars to Natsunoya because 5 stars isn't enough. I absolutely love Natsunoya's! Hands down the food is always so good. Some of my favorite are: tempuras (shrimp is a must), pulehu beef, steamed fish, potato/noodle mac salad. This review is more for those planning events. It was so easy to coordinate and work with Natsunoya to plan my event. They were patient with me and very helpful. I would totally have more events here in the future. 'Iolani class reunion. I can't believe I grew up on Oahu and never made it here. It's what I imagine a tea house would be like in Japan. It's a large building with multiple floors and well decorated. *Sushi Bar Review* came on a Wednesday for dinner and we were the only party, so the food came out fast! I made a reservation a couple weeks in advance. The parking is very easy. My favorite things were the tempura, oysters and Nigiri. The tempura batter here is perfect and it came out hot and crispy. The batter is so light and not greasy. The soft shell crab was also delicious but it wasn't hot when they served it to us. The oysters were fresh and the perfect size (Kumamoto I believe). I wish I had skipped the Omakase and just got a dozen or more oysters! The Omakase was good but I received the full/ large size when I ordered the small portion. Ribeye steak was a bit tough, wouldn't recommend ordering it. Stick with the sushi and sashimi! You order all the hot food with the waiter and Chef Sho will take all the sushi orders. Held my son and daughter-in-law's twin babies shower here. The food we ordered was from their Lunch Buffet Style Selection (25 people or more) Menu G - $35 per person, children under 4 is free. Menu includes different choices of entrees but we chose the following: - Comes with both Bara Sushi rice and White rice - Oriental Salad (other choice was Salmon Tofu Salad) - Agedashi Tofu - Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura - Hibachi Chicken (other choice was Fried Chicken) - Shoyu Pork (other choice was Tonkatsu) - Steamed Fish (other choice was Baked Catch) - Nishime (other choice was Noodles) - Potato Salad All the food was delicious...everyone enjoyed it! It's hard for me to choose what my favorite was because all were very tasty but I did go back to get more tofu and shrimp tempura so maybe these were it. Hardly any leftovers except for 2 containers of white rice and a couple of sandwich bags with little chicken and toss salad. Here are some FYI's: 1. When reserving a room, they collect a deposit of $200 which will be subtracted from your final bill. Deposit is NON-REFUNDABLE 2. There's a room charge of $150...this was for the Nigo room which is located upstairs. It may vary depending on the room you need to accommodate your head count 3. "Final head count", "menu selection" AND "50% of your total bill" is required 2 weeks prior to your event 4. Food is "Buffet-Style" but NOT all you can eat 5. They accept credit card payments or cash. NO PERSONAL CHECKS ACCEPTED 6. The room is reserved for 3 hours 7. They give you an extra hour before your function for set-up only (No confetti or glitter) 8. If you bring a helium tank, you need to dispose it or they'll add $25 to your bill 9. Beverages are B.Y.O.B. (subject to change). They did have 2 complimentary dispensers, one with cold water and the other with hot tea 10. They do offer beverage service that includes punch and iced tea (ice and cups provided) for a fee of $1.50 per guest 11. They have wooden stairs so a hand truck might damage it 13. You can bring your own pupus and desserts along with your own paper goods and utensils 14. They can supply you with takeout containers for leftover foods for an additional charge OR you can bring your own 15. Natsunoya Tea House is located in Alewa Heights. They have a parking lot but it's "Valet Only" for $8 plus tip. We came here for our cousin's wedding reception. They have only one stall for the men's. I cannot speak for the women's bathroom. But with plenty people there gets to be a long line. Not sure if there are other bathrooms upstairs or downstairs. We were at the ground level. Food is great, though! Parking is valet only for $8 +tip. Find street parking and walk, if can. Also, remember to just wear slippers. You take your shoes off when you get inside so no need wear your special date night shoes. read more

Who knew a such a tranquil and traditional Japanese spot could be hidden in the hills of Kalihi. This was my first time attending an event at Natsunoya Tea House - it was a graduation party in the large room on the bottom floor. The first part that struck me was the location and then when I walked in I noticed the employees get to wear kimonos; already I could tell this venue was like nothing else in Hawaii. I also noticed we take off our shoes - very Japanese - but it was definitely something to get used to throughout the night as I walked around the party room. That was just entering the venue, but if you arrive while there's still light out, you are just struck with a wide almost 180 view oh Honolulu. It really made me stop and stare and I already started hoping and praying when would be the next time I come back or what party could I book to enjoy this view again. I noticed there were multiple different parties happening at the same time. I want to definitely shoutout Izah for giving me a place to sit and chatting with me while I was waiting for my family to arrive. You see, since the party I was attending was for my husband's distant family I didn't feel comfortable entering by myself so I just stood and waited outside. Out of the handful of employees greeting guests, only Izah offered me a seat which was very kind of her since I was clearly pregnant as well. She also stayed and kept me company which I really appreciated. The food in the venue was great as well: traditional but also modern Japanese dishes mixed in with some Hawaii culture as well. It was a fun filled celebration with delicious food and karaoke music & dancing. We had shrimp and eggplant tempura, hibachi chicken, teriyaki steak, assorted sushi rice, oriental salad, tonkatsu, noodles, agedashi (tofu) with shiitake mushrooms and potato salad. Everything was super yummy!!! My favorite is their teriyaki steak, shrimp tempura and agedashi (tofu) with shiitake mushrooms! It melts in your mouth and flavors is just so delicious!!! I'm still thinking about the bursting flavors from that Sunday night! I love the concept of having your shoes, slippers or sandals removed. It helps keep the place clean and it feels warm & cozy. She was kind and gracious answering my inquiries on the different bento box options, food selections, different price ranges, delivery, etc. For my mom's celebration of life, I ordered 200 bentos. Each box contained tender moist chicken, battered fish, tempura fishcake, gobo, yakisoba, rice. Food was served in beautiful boxes and food was absolutely delicious. First of all I wanted to say the service here was excellent if you're planning a banquet party here . Once I got there to set up I had a lots of gifts and coolers, boxes to bring upstairs. Natsunoya Tea House has been a staple for our family celebrations. This time we were here for my Nieces First Birthday. We arrived at 10am to set up in one of the smaller rooms. They have valet parking for $8 at the time of writing this, or you can find street parking but there isn't much. We asked our server to bring our lunch in at 11 am and they were very prompt. Salads came first, then the rest of the food pretty much came out all at once. Salads 8/10. Your typical mixed greens. One had salmon and the other had mandarins. Great way to start the lunch. Agedashi Tofu 8/10. Flavorful dashi and well cooked tofu. Fried Noodles 7/10. Noodles were the usual local style fried noodles Garlic Chicken and Teri Beef 9/10. My favorite two dishes!! This place never disappoints! In this review, I was actually holding and hosting the party, so not just a guest. The staff was easy to work with and very helpful. They made me feel welcomed and my guests all had a great time. All the food is amazing and delicious!! There is no corkage fee and this is a BYOB. I brought in a cooler and they also accommodated us with wine buckets. I brought my own ice for the cooler. Our party was in the Ichigo room. It's easy to access on the 2nd floor. This room has the Diamond Head view and accommodates 10 people. There are 2 tables and they provide white table cloths. I brought my own table covers for the water/drink station and the gift table. Catering order was so good! They are easy to work with and took my order a few weeks in advance from event date. I wish they gave an invoice when we ordered but they ended up just taking my credit card and using it to charge on the day of the event. We ordered sushi service with catering trays of the karaage chicken, teriyaki steak, and salmon tofu salad. The catering menu is affordable for most items. They included delivery for our catering order with the sushi service which was nice and they provide the set up with chafing dishes/heating supplies, plates, etc. The teriyaki steak was sooo good - it went so fast and I wish I could have eaten more! After our event, many people asked where the food was from. I thought their portions were on the more generous side and wasn't skimpy at all. Their sushi service is $20 per person and they are also very generous with that. We had more than enough for our party and the sushi chef did stay later than promised to finish making all the sushi. He brought mostly everything himself, we just needed to set up a table for him. The service included ahi, salmon, hamachi, soft shell crab, california roll, spicy ahi, and ikura! They were missing a few items listed on the website but the spread was really good still considering the price. One minor issue is that we did have a mix up with the invoice cost - I was overcharged $400 initially but they were easy to work with and fix the charge and sent a refund. My cousin had a family celebration here for the 2nd time. A year ago we came, before the fire and this past Sunday he had another family dinner here and it was remarkably 100% better this time around for basically the same dishes. Flavorful and hot and generous portions. The family loved it--the 6 year old girl put away a dozen of the very flaky and fresh shrimp tempura and nibbled on all the other dishes like tonkatsu, karaage chicken, sushi rolls, cold somen, and a beautiful green salad. The teriyaki steak was perfectly cooked and tender and I would have to say it was one of the best meals that we have had on island so far. They have a shoe rack for all their guests to put their shoes. It's not a formal place, you can definitely dress down. Also, I thought we where going to have a menu to choose from but nooooo, it's group thing. So it's what they're serving that day which is cool! Everything tasted soooo good except for the tofu mushroom thing, that wasn't a fave. Everything else was bomb!! It starts with miso soup, of course, super good. Then we had some rolls. Not sure what it was called but had some ahi in the middle. Then the meals started coming out. There was tonkatsu, shrimp tempura, rice, this eggplant dish, the mushroom dish, salad (even the salad was super bommmb), garlic chicken I think and the steak wow! 7/23/23 I was very impressed with the quality of the food and efficiency of the staff. We attended a bridal shower held in one of the smaller rooms. It had its own restroom with sink and also another sink near the buffet station. First of all, it's valet parking only ($6). However there are a few spots for street parking. Just make sure you aren't blocking anyone's driveway and that your car is parked completely on the side since the road is narrow and curves. I haven't been to Japan but everything here looks authentic. From the decor, the female workers dressed in kimono's, removing your shoes, etc. The food...everything tasted delicious! They brought the food and lighted to burners just at the right time when our party was ready to eat. Everything had so much flavor. The tempura wasn't oily. The salads were so refreshing and light. My faves were the noodles, agedashi tofu, Kalbi (so juicy and tender) and tempura. My least favorite was the chicken karaage only because it was slightly dry. The others on my table agreed. We had a party of about 30 people. There were left overs and the male server came in when it looked like everyone was just about done eating, and asked if he can pack the food away. The way he laid out all the little takeout boxes and was able to portion everything out evenly was amazing. We noticed that none of the take out had Mac salad. Maybe they didn't pack that in case it got spoiled since it needed to stay chilled? I wish we could've gotten that packed up though. The servers also were attentive when coming in to clear all the plates. They seem to have everything timed precisely. There's different price options to reserve a party here. Obviously dinner will cost more. It was my first time here, but since I enjoyed myself so much I will keep this place in mind in case I need a venue for a small party in the future. We hosted my daughter's 1st birthday party here and all the guests could not stop talking about how good the food was. That's definitely the highlight when hosting a party here. Prices are still reasonable for lunch and the service is great! The set up/breakup time is a bit short, but they try to work with you as best as possible. Loved the bottom stage room as it was easily accessible for our guests and just the right size for our party, which had about 125 guests. I've also had events in the back cottage, which is perfect for smaller groups and has its own bathroom so you can stay in the back cottage the entire time! Note, valet parking only. The services were great and flexible with us on arranging the room for wines and beer. The Tea House does not provide alochol, so you can bring your own drinks. They do provide fruit punch, tea and coffee I believe. I would recommend this place for gathering to celebrate a special occasion. Parking could be challenging in this area, but there is valet parking. read more
