Yohei Sushi Restaurant opened in 1990 in Kalihi by founder/sushi chef Kazuto Obara and his wife who had immigrated to Hawaii from Hiroshima in the 1970's. It was his dream to open his own authentic Japanese restaurant using his special omakase experience from Japan and one of the first authentic sushi restaurants in Honolulu. It was a concept of "bringing Japan's finest to Hawaii" with a desire to "build a bridge between the two cultures of Japan and Hawaii." In 2018, operations were taken over by Testsuya Matsuda. A 2nd location was opened in Kahala in Jan 2024 by Hiroshima Mazda, whose specialty is traditional Japanese sushi (or omakase). Yohei Sushi 's menu offerings include: * Teishoku (or set meal). Comes with miso soup, rice, Japanese pickles, cold soba noodles, seasonal side dish. Main entrees are sashimi, tempura, maguro, misoyaki butterfish, ahi steak, saba. Also, combo meals of tendon/noodle, sushi/noodle; and donburi of unaju, oyako don and ten-ju. * Side order & ala carte. Includes sashimi, chawanmushi, ika, shinkomori, murokyu, soft shell crab, miuzuku, Hiyahakko, edamame, tempura. Ahi belly katsu, misoyaki butterfish, saba, seafood tempura, maguro temprta, ahi steak, salmon. We've had the following: * Tendon and Noodle. Deep fried tempura of shrimp and assorted veggies in a rice bowl with sauce & hot udon. Very filling and tasty! * Tempura Teishoku. This teishoku had 3 large pieces of fried tempura shrimp and assorted veggies, e.g., carrot, eggplant, green beans, pumpkin, that were light and non-oily. Our teishoku meals came with pickled veggies, cold soba, rice, and miso soup with lots of wakame and radish sprouts. Very flavorful! They also offered a complimentary birthday scoop of ice cream with a dollop of an as a topping, which was refreshing and paired well! * Maguro Tempura Teishoku. Hubby's choice of fried tempura tuna set, and he noted that there were 8 large tender pieces of maguro that was lightly fried and non-oily. Very delicious and filling! * Unagi nigiri. The unagi was so flaky, tender, and light and had the right amount of sauce. Loved it! The presentation of the meals was beautifully plated with real, authentic Japanese small dish bowls and plates. The food was of good quality and very flavorful! Customer service was excellent! Diners are greeted by staff upon entering and thanked when leaving. The old-time servers were very patient, attentive, welcoming, and gracious! Our food orders came out in a timely manner, and the servers, with smiles, frequently asked if everything was okay and if we needed anything else. Hours of operation are: lunch daily from 11a to 2p, dinner from 5p to 9p, closed Wed. Happy hour is from Thurs to Tues from 1:30p to 5p. Located in Kokea Center that looks like a run-down strip mall at Dillingham Blvd and Kokea St, the restaurant interior has a great ambiance as if you were dining in Japan, as it is comfortable and welcoming. It was amazing to see almost every table was taken by dining customers. Reservations are a must, as people are turned away. Good thing I called for lunch reservations at 12:15p on a weekday, which was tha last table available. And the restaurant was packed the entire time that we were there! Free parking in the private lot shared by other businesses, as well as metered street parking. During my most recent visit, I ordered the Shrimp and Maguro Tempura Teishoku. I've never had tuna tempura before, so I decided to try it. The teishoku comes with several small side dishes, the tempura, doba, rice, and miso soup. It's a solid amount of food. Everything was oishikatta, and I left the restaurant feeling full. The tempura was airy, crunchy, and cooked to perfection. The soba noodles were chewy and springy, and the side dishes nicely complimented the main courses. I enjoyed it all! I made reservations on OpenTable for Saturday. When we went on Saturday there's a line. Some people had reservations and lucky we had. Parking is kind of tight. We paid $27 for a tempura teishoku and got a disappointing 3 pieces of shrimp tempura, 1 egglant, 1 measly carrot, and only TWO green beans! Also to add more disappointment, there were no sides as shown in the online picture for the TAKE-OUT menu. When we called to let them know thinking they forgot to add more, the staff responded saying the take outs don't include the side dishes (pickled veggies, potato salad, bean sprouts, etc....). But when I brought up that our other take out teishokus included all, they switched it by saying only the tempura teishoku does not. Met up with a friend for lunch here during the week, and even though I've been to this plaza countless times, this was actually my first time dining at Yohei. The food was so delicious and such a great value! Their lunch sets are fantastic, lots of variety, so there's definitely something for everyone. Had dinner here with my boyfriend for a date night and we both really enjoyed it. Food and service were both great! We both ordered teishoku sets so it had a main plus several little sides, miso soup, udon (they allowed my boyfriend to substitute soba) and dessert. I had the nigiri and the rice balls were the perfect size so the fish really stood out. My boyfriend ordered the unagi and he really enjoyed it as well. Unfortunately we weren't sure exactly what all the sides were but they all tasted good. If you really want to know the sides the servers didn't seem to mind answering any questions. The couple next to us were asking about certain sides they had. We also shared the medium tempura set, anago nigiri, and soft shell crab. I'm a bit surprised to have came to this place on a Wednesday, except it wasn't with the friend I usually go with once each month. It was with my family, and with someone from my mom's side of the family. I never visited Yohei Sushi, nor have heard of it, despite having passed it multiple times when I have gone to a UH game, to Lanakila Pacific, or to go out lunch with a friend. Even at times to hang out, if necessary. Somehow, I didn't think it was across from Honolulu Community College and a half block down from 7-11. The place screams Japanese, from the decor to the appearance, and it looked nice upon entering. So...as far as what I went to eat at the time, I tried one of their specials, which was the cracker chicken set, and boy did they deliver well on the presentation. I nearly thought I was gonna get full much earlier considering that I went to Jack-In-The-Box and had a Jumbo Jack and two tacos for lunch at the time after I left Lanakila Pacific. I don't really know how I managed to eat all of what I ate at the time, but somehow I got through it. The workers were pretty nice in terms of giving me and my family a good time there. Yohei Sushi Stumbled upon this place in a small strip mall near Costco and were gifted with one of the most incredible dining experiences. We were seated at the sushi bar and offered two cups of hot tea by our incredibly kind hostess. As other parties entered, they were greeted warmly by the staff and it seemed to be a family-type establishment. We ordered two Teishoku sets - one seafood tempura and one sashimi + tempura. The plate had a bowl of rice (which they offered to refill at any point), delicious miso soup, cold and refreshing soba noodles, sauteed greens, and crisp japanese pickles. The tempura batter was phenomenal - it was crunchy even after cooling down towards the end of the meal. They had a wide variety of vegetables and seafood in the tempura mix, including what appeared to be a crab maki roll. The sashimi was perfect - thick slices with fish that tasted out of this world. Food is consistently great. Service is wonderful. One of my go-to sushi/Japanese teishoku place.

Where to begin... Setting is modern, upscale, warm, and inviting. Service was impeccable, so kudos to Miyazaki-San and my waiter. Plus I've never been given a free drink before by any restaurant (not sure if this was a limited promo), but that was a pleasant surprise! I also appreciated the souvenir given to me! Food was exceptional: I especially recommend the Shrimp Tempura chef selection as it was the best tempura I've probably ever had. Likewise, I hope they consider adding the Ume Tempura as a standalone appetizer in the future (I could eat like 10 orders of that easily). Wagyu (Miyazaki A5) was pretty good too, I don't know specifically what the cut was, but it was cooked to my preference and the accompaniments were a fresh diversion from the fattiness of the Wagyu. That being said, my only gripe was that a couple of the thicker end pieces were a little bit fattier than I usually like (despite being a Wagyu connoisseur, I'm not the biggest fan of fatty parts of steaks in general - some people live for that though), but still worth a try if you've never had Wagyu (order it medium because the fat renders better imo). Overall, I'd give them a 9.8/10 and would definitely recommend them to anyone; I will also be back the next time I visit to try their Omakase! One thing I wanted to address while I am here is that I know before I came that I read some of the other reviews about prices being a little expensive, but 1) it's a restaurant in Waikiki and 2) they serve quality local and imported ingredients. You don't want to compromise on the latter especially when you're on vacation since getting food poisoning would cost you way more, but that's just my 2 cents. read more

Decided to try Yohei last night because my bf was craving sushi. We called around 7:45pm to see if they had a table available for us & they said yes. When we got there, the restaurant was pretty packed even though they closed at 9. The restaurant itself is small, but they can fit a good amount of people. We had to wait a little for our table, but it wasn't a problem. Once we got seated, our orders were taken within 5 minutes. I must say the service was awesome & the food came out within 10 minutes. My bf & I were definitely impressed with the service! The workers were very kind & you could tell they love working there. The food was delicious as well. I was invited to dinner at Yohei Sushi Restaurant for the holidays. It is located off Dillingham Blvd. in a tiny strip mall that IMO has seen better days. The restaurant is quaint and simple! What stands out for me, since I arrived before the other guests is the welcoming and gracious staff. Service is impeccable here. Everyone at the table ordered one of their set (Teishoku) meals. It's been a few years since I've been back here. I used to bring my mom here at least twice a month to eat sushi, it was one of her favorite places for sushi. She passed away some years back and since I had a visitor who wanted good sushi I made reservations for lunch on a Monday. I wondered if the ownership changed because there were a few differences from the Yohei I remembered. We both ordered soba sushi combinations. I opted for the cold soba and I was so disappointed. The key to good soba is to obtain the perfect doneness of the noodle. There needs to be an al dente chewiness to the soba. Sadly, my noodles were overcooked and soft, and the tsuyu (dipping sauce) was too dilute for my preference. The sushi came with excellent quality fish but it was the smallest sushi I've seen, pretty disappointing. My lunch guest was from Sacramento and she said that she enjoyed her meal, but I don't know if she really knows what good sushi and soba are supposed to be like. I have not been to Yohei in years and couldn't wait to go again. We had a decent sized party so I had called the restaurant to make reservations. The person who answered the phone was friendly and quite pleasant to talk to. I received confirmation via text and it was displayed on my open table app. We went for lunch and it was a bit crowded, however we did not have to wait since our table was ready. I ordered the misoyaki butterfish teishoku and a chawanmushi. When I got my food, presentation was on point. It was on a tray with small little dishes. The portion size was great...a nice sized misoyaki butterfish. The teishoku came with rice, miso soup, tsukemono and soba. All I can say is, I savored every bite. Everything was delicious. The chawanmushi was hot and had a good flavor to it. The butterfish had just enough miso and the fish was soft and delicious. For dessert, I decided to get the shiratama. It comes with either vanilla or green tea ice cream, mochi balls, homemade azuki, with kinako and brown sugar syrup drizzled on top. I got mines with green tea ice cream. The homemade azuki was exceptional. Not too sweet and just the right texture. I definitely enjoyed everything that I had. Service was good too. Damn, where do I begin? I come to this place twice a month mainly for their seafood tempura, which consists of crab meat, shrimp, scallops, and occasional green beans. The seafood tempura I usually order comes in a set with some traditional Japanese side dishes and cold soba noodles. I also like to order the otoro and shrimp on the side. The servers are old Japanese ladies who will often come around and refill your cha or water. They are extremely friendly and most of the time tentative when the place is not busy. It is best to call and make a reservation because the place gets real busy at certain times. Been to this Japanese restaurant with the family many times. The food is authentic Japanese style and the waiters are always helpful in explaining what's on the plate. I rarely have to ask them for anything so the service is great. Cozy little eating area with a Sushi Bar on the side where you can watch the chefs make each sushi with expertise. The prices may be slightly high but well worth the experience. read more

Classy Japanese restaurant! Amazing teishoku. Husband and I returned here after about 3 years to celebrate our anniversary. The waitresses are always kind and wear a neat apron. They greet and say farewell here enthusiastically. Plenty of parking. Do not let The Rail construction traffic deter you. I recommend if you dine here to set aside more than an hour to supremely enjoy your food and the customer service. read more
