I have known and used Matt Horn and his services for well over 20 years. Projects have included major landscaping, hundreds of yards of custom built redwood fencing, a major irrigation system, and a complete rebuilding of our very large dock on the Alameda lagoon. In 2023, we decided that California's ongoing drought did not permit us to maintain even a tiny lawn in our backyard in downtown Berkeley. We looked for someone qualified to do a laundry-to-landscape greywater system, design and build a large deck, and reutilize as much as possible the flagstones that abutted the old lawn. We added installation of rainwater collection tanks to our wish list. Five stars, absolutely! Matt Horn and his terrific team did two projects for us, a very positive experience both times. Matt came highly recommended by a neighbor, whose tree care Matt has been handling for years. We're glad we went with that recommendation. The first project involved building a massive wooden retaining wall and replacing two fences, all of which look beautiful now. The fences and retaining wall required coordinating with three different neighbors. Matt and his team handled the situation with grace and efficiency. The neighbors commented on how courteous, friendly, and professional the entire team was. The fence work entailed removing tree stumps and layers of old concrete along a steep slope; very hard work that Matt and his team accomplished with a smile, all while watching out for our drainage system and nearby plants. Matt and crew (Tim and Monte) built a new deck for us this summer. They did the entire project, including design, material selection, build, and finish. Wow! i just stopped by a friend's house to see how her landscaping and deck work was coming along. To say that her contractor has an eye for space is an understatement. I first ran across Matt 6 or 7 years ago when I needed to remove some birch trees in Oakland that were encroaching on a view easement. Quick, quality, fair price. Like another reviewer said, no fuss. Now I live in Lafayette and need tree work or advice even more. Just today Matt and his adept co-worker/assistant trimmed 4 coast live oak trees. Again, quick, quality, and fair price. Matt also has an aesthetic, botanical, arborist, and precise eye that contributes a skillset to the project that it's nice to find all in one person. I contacted Matt Horn for an estimate to trim four trees. He arrived timely, made helpful suggestions about the work to be done and provided a detailed estimate. After doing due diligence re: licensing, etc., I hired Matt to do the job. He and his crew arrived on time - not my usual experience with contractors - and completed the work in very professional style with great care for safety. They also did a good job of cleanup and of course hauling was included in the price. The price was quite reasonable for the amount of limb lopping that they did. We had just moved into a great home, which unfortunately had grounds that had been ignored for years and were in decay. So, we sought to develop them into something that was both beautiful and useful. We interviewed two highly recommended professionals and found them both promising. We met with Matt second and found him more direct and focused on critical issues that we hadn't noticed. We immediately agreed Matt was the person we wanted to use. Matt is detailed oriented, innovative and listened to our needs for more privacy, gardening potential and spaces to relax. Our fences were falling down and the deck around our house was narrow and useless other than a walkway. Also, the stone wall in front of our house was crumbling away. Matt just recently completed a complete tear-out and rebuild of two very old, rotten decks at our hillside home in north Berkeley, one near ground level and the other a second-floor balcony. This was a major job involving a lot of surface area, relatively complex designs, three levels, stairs, a curved edge and numerous aesthetic decisions made on-the-fly. We are very pleased with the outcome. Matt is personable and reliable. He comes when he says he will and always let us know about any delays or wrinkles in the schedule. He communicates very well and has an excellent crew of experienced carpenters, a stucco mason, etc.. He uses quality materials and builds to last -- these decks are solid. He also brought to the job, from the start, a very complete set of power tools and supplies, so there seemed to be very little time lost because something was not available when needed. At the end of the deck work we also elected to have Matt and his crew rebuild our old drip irrigation system and that job was also well done. This was not cheap, because it was a big job and combined both a bid and time and materials segments, but I consider Matt's hourly rates and those he charges for his crew to be reasonable for the Bay Area and the quality of work done.
