So I forgot how to speak when eating my meal... the ambiance there was so warm and welcoming after a rainy day walking in Dublin and going to many museums. It was shortly after we had landed and we were still adjusting to the time change (we were VERY tired). My best friend and I were at the RHA and I was getting HANGRY. She decided this one based on Yelp reviews but we were blown away when we walked in. They checked our jackets and umbrellas for us. She ordered the salmon special and I ordered the Pan-fried scallops, Glazed Pork Belly with spiced cauliflower, peas, apple. When we got our wine, wonderful piano music started playing as the background to this mystifying place when my friend asked "Where are we?" When our meals were delivered we both tucked in. She enjoyed her salmon but completely I stoped talking. She wondered if I was mad at her or if I didn't enjoy my meal? I had her try my dish and then she understood. I had no words to describe it and no words were needed. Unfortunately, I need them here but...wow. Do you know what it's like to have the best meal of your life and realize it while it's happening? I do. We debated going back there and getting it to go before our flight but I knew it wouldn't be the same. Great Pub Grub in downtown Dublin. Staff very friendly . We sat at the bar and had a seafood platter alll with local seafood. To be honest it was Sunday and it did not taste as Uber fresh as I have had State side . That said the ambience and staff especially the Bartender more than made up for what might have been lacking. There is a reason this place was voted best seafood in Dublin - because it is! We tried both types of oysters and finished with a main courses of halibut and fish and chips. Cyndy's Bottom Line: Delicious fresh Carlingford oysters and seafood chowder served here. Decent selection of wines either by the glass or by the bottle. This is what we ate: We stopped in for seafood and ordered the Carlingford oysters by default because they were out of Galway oysters. It worked to our advantage because the Carlingford oysters were superb! Nice and briny, medium to large cups and creamy texture. They are served with two types of sauces but all it needed was a splash of lemon. Simply delicious! Next I had the seafood chowder. A generous bowl of chowder with lots of fish and bread mixed in for a thick chowder. Great flavor. Sole with a shallots, caper, and butter sauce - The generous piece of fish needs to be served deboned. It would have been wonderful to eat without having to work and take out the main bone and remove all of the other fish bones. Salmon with a chorizo sauce - a nice piece of salmon served with the skin on top. The skin was very hard and not to be eaten. Would have been best served a tad bit underdone with a crispy skin. I really want to give them a higher rating because everyone was nice but I can't. We showed up at 7 and sat down and ordered. The place was busy and loud. The appetizers came 46 mins later. The mussels and oysters were phenomenal. Then we waited and waited and waited. The food came out an hour and a half after we came in, at 8:30. The Atlantic prawn Linguine was ok, had to add salt and pepper to add some taste. Then the steaming shellfish pot came and it tasted burnt and the mussel shells was charred. We told the staff that it was burnt, they said that it was the taste of the Nduja sausage but they took it back and then came and agreed that it was in fact burnt. As a replacement we got a pan-fried scallops and glazed pork belly. That tastes peculiar. Not bad, not good. Just not something we liked. They took off the entree from the bill and I think were going to offer us dessert but at the point we had been there for 2 hrs and we wanted to go home. So overall, it was a pretty bad experience but the staff was very nice about it. read more

We read that Michelle Obama ate at Matt the Thresher, and being from Hoboken, we know the Obamas ate at all the hot places in NYC. Anthony Bourdain also had oysters and Guinness here on the Layover, so we were looking forward to our dinner. We made an online request for a reservation (recommended) for a Saturday night in May 2017. We absolutely enjoyed our dinner at Matt the Thresher. The seafood was very fresh and the wine list had a number of interesting whites by the glass that went well with seafood. We started with oysters, seafood chowder and the crab tian. All were excellent, although the tain could have used more smoked salmon. It seemed the kitchen was in the weeds that night so we waited quite a long time (30 minutes or so?) for our monkfish entree, which was also excellent. Despite that and other minor hiccups in service (like failing to remove a spent platter of oysters from our very small table), I'm still giving Matt the Thresher 5 stars for a terrific dinner. Quite literally, this was one of the best lunches that I have EVER eaten. The fresh catch of the day was amazing. The mussels were by far the best I have ever had! Just finished up dinner here. All I can say it wow!!!! Ordered the Parmesan truffle fries, the crab claws, and cheese tray for dessert. Thoroughly satisfied. Big plus to our night was our server Ivan. He took his time to explain dishes for us, paired wine very well and sold us on the delicious cheese tray. Kudos to his service tonight seriously, he did an awesome job!! The food was spectacular. Seafood here is amazing. Crab was rich in flavor but complemented with a dry wine! I have never felt more disrespected at a restaurant. I am currently on a business trip in Dublin and was craving seafood. I walked in and glanced at the menu while waiting to be seated. A couple walked in after me and the host (male with glasses who I believe may be the manager) offered to seat them first. The couple even said to the host that I was there before them. The host ignored that statement and said that it's fine, he'll seat them first. I was still standing there waiting to be seated and then another couple walked in. AGAIN, he offered to seat them knowing that I was already waiting. AGAIN, that couple also stated that there was someone waiting before them. The host said "no, she's not ready." I said, "actually yes, I am ready," and then the host said "well, can you just wait?!" in a completely dismissive and condescending tone. At this point, I was completely appalled and confused as to why I was treated that way. I even thanked the couple behind me for being so kind for trying to also make it known that what they saw was unfair treatment. I think when two other parties see and say the same thing, it's clear that something seems wrong with the service. Anyways, the food was delicious and the wait staff was friendly. Matt the Thresher was recommended to me by a friend. This was one of the best meals I've ever had, and without a doubt the best I've had in Ireland. Atmosphere: The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated with a vibrant atmosphere. It is very charming, with an open fire at the entrance. There is also a large ice counter displaying the catch of the day and a piano at the center of the restaurant. Food: All the dishes were extremely fresh and very flavorful. Everything was so tasty and each item on the menu had its own distinctive accompaniment. We started with a dozen raw oysters that were served with 3 different toppings, and they were absolutely delicious. I ordered the Mussels for my main course, and my boyfriend ordered the daily fresh catch special. Both were superb. I love mussels, and have sampled them across the US. The mussels at Matt the Thresher.. were some of the best mussels I have ever had. We also accompanied our meal with a pint of Guinness, and the whole experience was just perfect. Service: The service was superb, with our waiter checking back with us often, and very attentive and polite. I also really enjoyed listening to his accent, so it was just a lovely experience. This place definitely deserves 5 stars!! Went here a couple of times in 2012 and thought the food was amazing. We returned in December 2014 with my future parents in law for dinner and the food was just as good as I remembered. What I really like about here is that its not like some other places where standards slip with popularity which I think went through the roof after Michelle Obama had lunch here?! We booked for early evening not long before Christmas and the place was packed. We had the table for just over two hours. Even though the place was packed you didn't feel like it was. The tables are well spaced out so it still felt quite private. I had the lobster and prawn cocktail, followed by a tuna burger (Which was their special that day) and finished off with a chocolate trio mousse. The seafood specials change daily with whatever the catch of the day is but the food is always fresh. If you're looking for great seafood, service and atmosphere you should definitely try here. read more

Best seafood in Dublin by far, they have daily specials based on the catch of the day. The restaurant is cozy, staff very friendly and most likely you need a reservation for both lunch and dinner since it is in the business district of Dublin. During my two lunches here I tried the seafood chowder, it has big chunks of fresh fish in it and it is creamy and delicious. They use parsnip in some of the dishes instead of mashed potatoes and I love that. I also tried the sole, that was prepared perfectly, and a large portion served with asparagus and a fresh shrimp dish that had the one of the sweetest and freshest large shrimp I have ever had. We were hooked when we saw all the fresh fish on the menu and were not disappointed. We had some of the oysters and a salad to start and, because we were not extremely hungry, shared what I think they called a steaming pot of shellfish and some buttered veggies. The shellfish pot was brimming with mussels, shrimp, lobster, and chorizo and came with garlic bread. Some tasty brown bread was served with the starters. All paired with a very French wine from their extensive list. The decor is dominated by a huge chandelier that swirls dramatically above the dining room and there are windows making the feel airy. Ordering a burger in a seafood restaurant was never a good idea. I was just absolutely starving (it was 10pm by the time we were seated, after the 20 minutes suggested wait turned into over an hour) and needed something very substantial and meaty. My medium cheese burger was cooked well, but very underseasoned. Not a fan of chunky chips either, so I left most of them. Now, why do I give this place still 4 stars after these harsh words (I almost feel sorry for my poor burger, being so critical)...I polished off my friends pot of mussels, and they were absolutely divine. The broth was amazing as well. I need to go back here and order a pot for myself, YUM! The restaurant itself is very loud and buzzy. Lots of people hanging and standing at the bar area. It definitely has more of a pub feel than restaurant. Do NOT plan a romantic, intimate meal for two here (unless seated upstairs in the more quiet area) Menu prices were all over the place though. I thought 14 euro for my burger was cheap, but then for instance the prawn salad starter costs 14 euro as well? 24 euro for the fairly small portion of hake (kerching!) but only 16 euro for the huge pot of mussels. read more

We ate here our first night before we travelled all over Ireland and the UK and this was our favorite meal of all. We got the caprese salad which was so fresh, light, and delightful. The heirloom tomatoes were full of flavor as well as the mozzarella. We also split some oysters, which were amazing. We ate oysters all over on our travels and these were the best ones. When we got in, we asked for window seats but there were none available but when one became vacant, we were moved which was very nice. Although not strictly a seafood restaurant, Matt the Thresher near St. Stephen's Green, offers a bounty of what the local sea has to offer. Near the top of that list would be the oysters, these from Carlingford are small and sweet. Interestingly, they go amazingly well with the top notch pint of Guinness poured here. Next up was the cauliflower soup which, with the delicious brown bread and rich Irish butter, would be a meal in itself. The scampi I had were done with a light tempura batter and were delicious. A great transformation of the former Pembroke Pub, a place I always felt was badly lacking in atmosphere. Matt the Thresher (hate the name!) is a seafood bar & grill that has upgraded the decor and added a grand piano. It is a vast improvement but I'm still not completely convinced by the interior. Perhaps it is the layout which hasn't really changed at all. The food menu is wonderful with plenty of daily specials to go alongside it. The wine list is well thought out with enough wallet friendly options. These more than make up for my lingering issues with the design of the place. I have been here 3 times now, trying different dishes each time. The open crab sandwich is very nice, if a tad on the pricey side for the portion size. The crab salad comes on the side of the bread, something I appreciate. Highly recommend the scampi but make sure you go hungry- the portion comes with chips and is huge!!! The tartar sauce is dangerously tasty. I also sampled the crab, prawn and avocado salad which is deceptively filling but lovely and fresh. The pea puree wasn't the best I've ever tasted but was a lovely accompaniment to the beautifully cooked piece of Ling I ordered. What I particularly like about this place are the different themed evenings they are putting on during the week such as crab dressing and wine tasting. The staff are clearly very well trained, very polite and answered any questions I had. Finally, a decent and fairly priced seafood eatery in the city centre. More of these!! read more
