We stopped by on our way up to DC. The place was fairly large but very empty. My wife and I each did a tasting but the wine wasn't to my liking. I did end up getting some frozen wine slush that was decent. The person serving our wine didn't really have much enthusiasm or offer much insight into the wine choices. They also started talking our ears off about some pretty wild conspiracy theories about the government controlling the weather. It was some of the most ignorant speech I've ever heard. We bought a bottle of wine from them and opened it after getting back home only to find it was tainted. It smelled and tasted like vinegar. Absolutely disgusting. We will never go back to this winery. read more

They Gave us our two glasses with no enthusiasm or thanks, the wine cocktails had edible glitter in them which I normally would not consume but I think the server would have thrown a fit if I sent the glass back. For richer or pourer, I take thee, Dale to be my wine connoisseur! I DO, believe this to be one of the most fun times I've ever had at a winery! Dale was so personable and knowledgeable, my bestie and I had a blast here! Dale didn't rush us, gave us the low down on the different wines and answered all of our questions. He was a fountain of information and humor! This rustic, lodge like winery has a gorgeous interior with golden, wood walls and subtle soft lighting! The antler chandelier is on point (har-har)! The beautiful long bar is a comfortable place to enjoy your tasting as you soak in the woodsy vibe at this casual winery. The carved bear figures on the porch, the barrel tables, the southwestern and Native American décor make for some great photo ops. I love all the Native American touches everywhere! Named for 3 rivers in Spotsylvania county, the Matta, the Po, and the Ni, this area has a rich Indian history and I love that this winery celebrates its culture. The chill, relaxing atmosphere here makes you want to linger as you sip these award winning wines! We purchased the Strawberry Chocolate wine, the Chambourcin, the Cabernet Franc, the Pinot Grigio, and several other varietals. Not only were the wines fabulous, but they also sell other merchandise! We bought some super cool turquoise jewelry and some amazing spices! They have a whole line of humorous spices, "Chicken $h*t, "Bull $H*t, etc. that are not only fun gifts, but they are tasty!! We add some of those spices to many of our dishes for some added zing!! They also stock local honey, oils, snacks, and other products and we were happy to support the local businesses and this terrific winery! I'll start by saying we've visited Mattaponi winery several times in the past and have had positive experiences, and we know what to expect from the wines when we go.  We visited on Saturday. The weather was raining when we arrived so it wasn't busy, which was great. Kristy (spelling unsure) assisted us with our tasting. While she was admittedly newer to the winery, she did an excellent job pouring wines and providing outstanding service. She was very hospitable and friendly the entire experience and provided good overviews of all the wines.  Admittedly, my wife and I aren't fans of sweeter wines (a majority of these are sweeter), they're still enjoyable for those looking for something sweeter or different.  The location is good for enjoying a glass or bottle on the property. Nothing fancy but offer tables in and out, and covered seating around the building.  Overall worth the visit based on the excellent service alone, but tailor your expectations on what wines you expectations to try while there. Now WHY did I just figure out I was passing this winery on my drive multiple times a month?! My go to place at the past wine festivals I've attended; I was ecstatic to find out its location. Down a side road, so be mindful that red sign might pop up on you. Covid-19 precautions so as I pulled up, I called a number to let them know I was there. Little bit of a wait, but of course it was worth it. Glad they have the premixed bottles of the sunshine sangria ($15)! Tasted just as I last remember from when outside was open. read more

A quick stop here on our explorations of the area. A very nice set up with a wrap around porch for outside wine sipping and snacking. Unfortunately the wines were unremarkable and in a few cases undrinkable. Our server was very nice and helpful explaining the different wines on offer. The place specializes in sweet wines. They also had a few cocktails which were made with wine instead of liquor. We are apparently "sophisticated" as we like dry wines. Who knew! Anyway we had a nice stop and a couple of sips and were on our way. Don't go here if you are looking for nice wines but for a few sips outside along a journey it might be worth a stop. We stopped by here for a tasting before heading to my friends house on Lake Anna--and we were lucky enough to take part in their St Patrick's Day Pancake and Wine pairing. Honestly, there aren't words to describe the experience that was this magical culinary journey. There was a traminette wine with an Irish potato pancake, a STRAWBERRY wine with a strawberry pancake, a cranberry chambourcin with a chocolate pancake, and a blueberry wine and lemon and poppyseed pancake. We had tried Mattaponi's wine at the Fredericksburg Cider Festival and have wanted to go there for a few years. We decided to make the hour trip today as something fun to do for the 4th of July. We pulled up and were greeted upon getting of the car. We were promptly seated on the outside deck area. We ended up at one of the high toppers after trying to sit on the log benches at the end of the patio. They have a lot of rough edges when you sit down and are scratchy and uncomfortable, so we moved. Once we were seated, we ordered the wine cocktail flight and our server added on the three sweet wine tasters at no charge. Our favorite was the strawberry wine. It's really outstanding and probably the best strawberry wine we've ever had. The other sweet wines were a Niagara which was good too, and a traminette that we didn't care for. The wine cocktail flight was a really different take on a wine flight with piña colada, mojito, peach lightning, strawberry margarita, and sangria as small samples. After sharing the flights, we decided to order the strawberry ice cream wine dessert. It was also good, and you get to keep the glass with the order. If you are looking for a no frills kinda place to come and enjoy a tasting with some friends then Mattaponi is your place. My girls and I were drawn her to take part of the popcorn/whoopie pie pairing that they were promoting. SInce it was four of us, two did the popcorn and two did the whoopie pies. I have been here several times so it's only right that I write a review. If you ever visited before the completion of the new tasting room, it is time to plan another visit. I like coming here because the vibes are real chill as soon as you walk in the door. No frills and no fuss, truly a come as you are kinda spot. Everyone is friendly and goes out of their way to make sure your experience is enjoyable. Their tasting is one of the more generous ones as far as selection. Typically you are tasting about eleven or so wines. If you are not fully on the sweet train or for the those looking to expand their palette, then this is the place to be. Most of their wines are on the rather sweet side but they do have a few that are borderline for those who are not full blown sweeties. The popcorn pairing is a fabulous idea, if i do say so myself. For the sweeter wines like the Makadewamin and the Miskawin you would have to be a sweet drinker to appreciate the rich fruit forward flavors. I think my favs were the DeChaunac that was paired with the Chocolate Bacon Popcorn and the Golden Horse Shoe that was paired with the Lemon Chiffon popcorn and last but not least the Pocahantas Harvest with Tuscan Herb Popcorn. Although all the pairings were respectable and pulled out different elements of the wines they were paired with. As if the pairing was not enough, in addition to all the wines being available for purchase, of course, all the popcorn was available as well as the whoopie pies, which they had deals for both. Those whoopie pies were huge too! They also had loaded baked potato soup for consumption as well as a discount on a fresh cut tree if you partook in a tasting. The setting creates a good backdrop for that family holiday pic too as a few families were taking advantage of too! Definitely keep this place on your radar on a winery hopping day! Visited 4/24/21 If you like good wine, I cannot recommend most found here. We had a tasting of 12 wines: the first five were cringe worthy: undrinkable. No dump bucket to be found when one was desperately needed. Revolting concoctions that tried to pass themselves off as wine: Chardonnay, Traminette, Niagra, Cab Franc, and Merlot. Aromas of unimaginable pain. A pinnacle of shameful, ignorant wine making. A Chambourcin (dry) hit the "okay" mark to give some credit. Then a blend of that with cranberries. A bit odd, but tasted okay when compared to the first five. They did have a bonus "experimental" Vidal Blanc (not on the menu) and was the best of the lot. Tasting was capped off with three fruit wines. Blueberry, strawberry, and strawberry with chocolate. Strawberries and blueberries should never be made into wine. read more

Mattaponi is a tough one to rate because the highs and lows of different wine flights were dramatic. I gave them 3 stars as an average, but in reality I need multiple ratings to do them justice. Service: 5 stars. Sangria: 5 stars, easily. Fruit wines: 3 or 4 stars (depending on which one and what you think of fruit wines in general). Grape wines: a measly 1 star. Their 11 tastings for $5 (normally 13 wines but 2 were sold out) is a great deal, even if I didn't care for the grape wines. Mattaponi is known primarily for their fruit wines; if that's not your thing, you might want to skip them (although I encourage you to at least try). Many of their grape wines were fruit forward (including Chambourcin, Concord, Niagara). They don't own any grape vines, which is unusual but given their style of wines, understandable. I'll start with the awesome sangria. I discovered Mattaponi at a festival and I kept going back to their booth for more of this sweet sweet nectar. They have two blends; one with Chardonnay and the other with Cab Sav; I had a hard time picking which I liked more. They also sell 'kits' of juice and a wine bottle where you can make your own at home. I was tempted to try, but I avoided temptation...this time... Next the pretty good: the fruit wines. First off I'll admit; I find fruit wines hit or miss, and this was no different. I liked the Peach and the POW WOW (accurately described as tasting like Chocolate Covered Strawberries) the best; I'd get either again no problem. The Strawberry was pretty good. The Grapefruit and the Blackberry were OK. Lastly the grape wines. I honestly, truly couldn't stand the Chardonnay, Riesling, or Cab Sav. The Chambourcin was OK, and the Concord was surprisingly decent (which was odd since typically Concord-based wines taste too much like jam). What else to say...the server was incredibly patient; a customer couldn't quite understand what he meant by a sangria 'kit' and he explained it like 4 times in a row. This place is also on the Grape and Grains wine pass, which is a good deal. As of December they've had a new tasting building (which is a HUGE improvement over the old one), which is mostly complete. read more

We live in the area and decided to stop in recently. First impression is the winery is a bit run down. The grass is patchy, the porch is used for storage and there are two porta potties right next to the backyard seating with weeds growing up around them. The woman who served us offered no suggestions or any info on the wines offered. For someone who is primarily a Napa Cab drinker, none of the reds were to my liking. The whites were extremely yellow and incredibly sweet. This was not the place for us and was incredibly disappointing. We might have stayed longer if there was a pleasant view. read more

With the Rona still running rampant it was great to get out of the house and find a local winery. I admit I was disappointed that they would not honor my Virginia wine trail coupon but that didn't stop us from trying a wine flight. Having wine in a paper cup isn't the best idea especially on a day where it was close to 100 degrees and they had to add ice to each wine as we were sitting outside due to social distancing measures. I would like to go back once we can go inside and drink out of glass or even plastic. I think the paper cups just took away all of the taste and flavors of each wine. read more

If your laid-back friends or down-to-earth relations got together and started a winery, it would look like modest Mattaponi: a faux-log house with a tasting [sun]room attached to the back of said house, situated on several acres of what looks like a Christmas tree farm. A Banana Banner sign on the road, very few grapevines, a winding dirt road leading up to the family house with dog-fence and children's bikes propped on the porch. To get to the restroom, I had to walk through the family's actual living room while two teenaged sons played Wii. And it was the family bathroom. Might put off some, but I had to laugh. Mattaponi is a relatively new, family-run winery run producing a small number of specialized wines. We were greeted warmly by retired State Police officer, Joel, who helps out in the tasting room. He was gregarious, warm, and supremely welcoming. The tasting room itself is very basic, as I said, a sunroom attached to the back of the family home, adjacent to their back deck and above-ground pool. Mattaponi is a *very* informal, *very* casual winery, if you can even call it that. We had the tasting room to ourselves the entire visit. For the low, low price of $2, we sampled the Chardonnay, which was light and crisp; a mellow and smooth Merlot; the Miskawamin semi-dry red tasting strongly -- but not unpleasantly -- of Concord grapes; the tart, sweet Makadewàmin blackberry wine; the Tibik-Kizìsmin, a syrupy blueberry; and the Odeimin, a very nice, not overly sweet, strawberry wine. If you like sweet wines, you'll like most of Mattaponi's. I don't, but I could appreciate all of them and even purchased a bottle of the delicious Odeimin. None of Mattaponi's wines exceeds $18. Don't come to Mattaponi expecting luxury and modernity. Do come here expecting to be treated like family and to enjoy a wholly unpretentious experience down on the farm. read more

Date of visit: 03/16/2019 Worst customer service ever. Walked up to the tasting room bar. They were serving several other people already. But no smile, no hello, no we'll be with you shortly. Not even eye contact. We were being rudely ignored for at least 15 minutes. Just when we couldn't even believe that we were still standing there being ignored, we were slightly acknowledged. After almost 10 minutes more we were having our tasting. I presented my Virginia Wine Pass and asked if they took it. I was told (rather gruffly) that only I was to have a free tasting. We decided on the cheese pairing tasting for $10 a person (for the other two in my party). Each tiny piece of cheese was hard. The lady giving our tasting didn't know a lot about the wine and certainly let us know. She even told us that she doesn't like wine, she is a beer drinker and that recently her boss MADE her take a wine tasting! Both women working were EXTREMELY overwhelmed. We have been to about 100 Virginia wineries and NEVER have we been treated like this or had hosts so overwhelmed that we could not even be greeted upon arriving. Other wineries start new customers and their tastings along with those already at the bar. These two women had no idea how to do that. I wish there were a way to give separate ratings for the service/property and the wines. The tasting room wasn't yet open - I guess due to pandemic - so we did the tasting on the porch. The young lady who did our tasting was pleasant and competent and knowledgeable about the wines and winery and we really enjoyed the swings and cornhole. I am down with a chillaxed winery atmosphere and usually prefer these to the big fancy ones which cater to events. The wines, to my palate, were fairly awful. It gives me no pleasure to write this - I don't wish to disparage the business - but just to inform people who are looking for a good example of Virginia winemaking, and may be pressed for time and need to be choosy. Trying to be an advocate of Virginia wines here, of which I am a fan. I see a lot of good reviews, so maybe Mattaponi could be for you. Just go knowing these wines are very out of the box. As for me, I noted the many awards touted and was left wondering about the judges. The chardonnay was particularly vile to my taste. They flavor it with wood chips and that does not sound or taste like a good thing to me. The tasting started with a couple sweet "wine cocktails", which did no favors to the rest of the lineup. I found myself trying to cleanse my palate for the remainder of the tasting, just to be sure the wines were really that bad. (If you do a lot of tastings, you know the sweet ones are pretty much always at the end.). Next were 2 whites - the chardonnay and the other I only remember as slightly less offensive than the chardonnay. The chambourcin was the best of the lot, i.e., actually drinkable. Last I remember was a strawberry wine. Enough said. The cocktails were fine - just like kiddie fruit juice tasting to me. Obviously I am not their target demographic. Realizing the upheaval with the winemaker's passing, I want to be gentle, but I see some reviews consistent with my taste experience going years back, so it may not be just a blip. I had the urge to try a glass of my fave varietal, Cab Franc - what I consider a VA wine staple, but after what I'd sampled in the tasting, I did not want to allow this winery to drag my fave through the mud, so to speak! LOVE this winery. I first tasted their wine at a festival a month ago and have wanted to visit the actual winery since then. Today my boyfriend and I made the trip from Richmond and it was completely worth it. I can honestly say I enjoyed every wine I tried during the tasting. My favorites were the fruit wines, but the whites and reds were also great. The tasting was $5 and for an additional $2 added a slice of cheesecake that was delicious! Absolutely disgusting. We've been to many wineries previously in the US and abroad but none in VA. Upon arrival at our first stop which was Mattaponi, we noticed it was a bit beat up with scarce grounds and a tiny vineyard (we didn't see grapes but we made the assumption). We're okay with no frills environments so we ordered a $19 bottle of Pinot Grigio. When the person handed it to us in a dark sleeve to keep it cold, he said, "there's a bit of sediment in there but it won't hurt you." We politely laughed and moved to the 2 person swings facing the woods. We were chatting and not paying attention as we each poured a glass and drank the nastiest sip of wine we've ever tasted. That is when we took the bottle out of the sleeve just to be horrified (zoom in on the picture). Typically we would complain but at this point, we just wanted to leave quickly as our extra time there was more valuable than the money. I'm sure they would have replaced the bottle but we didn't want it given the person thought this level of sediment was okay to serve in the first place. We almost didn't continue to Lake Anna's Winery given we were soured and now thought VA wines and wineries must all be of such poor quality. First it should be called a tasting room. You will not see any wine made there. All you have is an outhouse for bathroom use. They sell mostly sangria which AFTER I purchased a bottle was told I need to drink it in a week. We are social drinkers and have a glass of wine here and there. We have been here in the past, last time we were here they had just finished the new tasting room. The tasting with cake boss was quite the rip off 15 plus tax. We did like the Chambourcin and we have purchased the Sangria in the past. Why I will never go there again. The bathroom, it's coed. Not a fan of opening a door and seeing a man standing at the urinal. We were both embarrassed. There is a stall in there but seriously! I decided to hold it after that experience. The place is now trashy looking and in disrepair. Their was a mattress and tires piled up on the porch. This was Valentine's weekend. Your first impression is the outside when you pull up and yep we should of kept going. A winery should have ambiance! Oh and I second the comment about having to wait. We were there on the Sunday. Mattaponi was the second stop (of 6) on our Heart of Virginia wine tour. I'd previously tried their wines at the April Fools Wine Festival at James River Cellars last year, but this was my first visit to their tasting room. The decor is Native American inspired - not surprising given the name of the winery - and the tasting room has a cozy, lived-in feel. This is not at all your uppety pretentious winery aiming to impress out-of-towners with large pockets. Nope, this is just a casual, family-run operation with a welcoming vibe. And some pretty tasty wines. They're known for their fruit wines, which are personally a tad too sweet for my liking, but that's a taste preference that rings true across all wineries so it's not a knock on their wine. If you like sweet wines, then chances are you'll love Mattaponi's fruit varieties. The chocolate covered strawberry was pretty darn delicious. Talk about drinking your dessert! Rather than giving you a tasting sheet for taking notes, their wine list is displayed inside a plastic sleeve and they provide dry erase markers for tasting notes. This is not something I've seen before and I found it kind of cool. We took home a bottle of the merlot, and I look forward to enjoying it sometime soon! read more

Okay, first the good: the fruit wines - which are apparently what they are known for - are good and refreshing. I would happily sip on the grapefruit/strawberry wine on a hot day. Just not for $15/bottle. The woman who did the tasting was very friendly. Now the not so good: the tastings are done in a tent in the yard. That's fine on a day that's not too hot and the bugs aren't too bad. Otherwise, not great. The cabernet sauvignon was okay.
