Lake Anna winery in Spotsylvania VA, Lake Anna area to be exact. I want to highlight how calm and serene the area looks, the spaciousness of the winery itself. How welcoming the owner Jeff was. We got a wine tour which wasn't planned, and the facilities behind the curtain were immaculate. There is no formal kitchen but it isn't necessary because there are wine snacks, charcuterie, nuts,etc. This is one of my favorite wineries and I am glad to be able to visit for the first time. We stayed for a few hours and had a blast. Cant want to see what events they put on next year when the weather breaks. read more

My sister in law and I ventured out from our lake house! This place was nice and quiet! 2 flights for tasting sole crackers, cheese and salami for less than 40 bucks not bad. The service was helpful and welcoming. We started off sitting outside, but it started to sprinkle, and we had to bring the party inside which was fine. The television was playing country music, which for my sister-in-law, and I was perfect. We sat and talked for almost 2 hours while enjoying little sips of our flights. I think the wine at this particular winery was super good, a variety of sweet, dry whites and reds. I would definitely come back! read more

Oh Lake Anna Winery, it's a vibe every time!!! I've been here a few times so this review is well overdue but right on time since this was the best visit to date!!! My previous visits were mostly for a tasting but this time, it was their Caribbean Beach Party that they hosted and had other wineries there providing tastings as well, all in one location, under a huge tasting tent. James River Cellars, Mattaponi, Greyhaven and Cooper Vineyard were in attendance. Your ticket covered admission and your tasting glass to taste each of the wineries offerings. They also had a cigar vendor in site not only selling cigars but also had a tent with seating to provide a space for folks to enjoy the cigars without having to be amongst the masses. Inside they had a cupcake vendor out of Richmond (forgive me I forgot the name but I know they are located in Scott's Addition) that used the Lake Anna wines and infused them into the cupcakes they had and yes they sold out!!! There was also a few other vendors from candles, jewelry and handmade gifts. As if that was not enough, there was also live music. The band played a little bit of everything!!! Some old school classics, current hits as well as some go go!!! One of the things that I love about Lake Anna besides the beautiful vines as they let you set up your "spot" in the vines, is that they allow outside food, chairs and even tents if you so choose. In case you decided not to pack a picnic and all, they did have food vendors on site too. As far as the wines, Concerto and Lake Side Sunset are my two favorites here as well as the Petit Verdot is worthy, very worthy indeed!! Everyone was super friendly which is always a plus. They had plenty of space for parking and there are two ways into the winery, word to the wise, whatever you use for directions will take you right past the first entrance so keep your eyes open and actually turn when you see the sign. After completing my visit to the Virginia Renaissance Faire, since I was already on the grounds of the Lake Anna Winery - well, you know I had to check it out! The place was slow on a Saturday afternoon, one other couple was inside at the tasting bar. I sidled up and introduced myself and proceeded to taste a total of 12 wines. Out of the 12 I tasted, I really enjoyed their 2007 Seyval Blanc, Enigme (they call this one their mystery wine - a blend of three red grapes), the Lake Side White, and the Lake Side Red. Overall, I liked all of their wines, with the exception of their dessert wine - the Essensual 2006 was way to sweet for my palate. I ended up buying two bottles of the 2007 Seyval Blanc, plus a wine glass. The Seyval is a crisp, tart, delicious summer wine. I proceeded to drink a bottle of this when I got home with my neighbors! I really like this winery and will be back again! read more

Nothing I disliked, but few standouts. 11 wines for $5 makes them one of the best-priced tastings I've had in a long time. While I bought a bottle of the cherry-flavored Concerto, I was hard pressed to identify much else I really liked. I loved the view of the 27 acres under vine as I drove in; I later learned their wines are about 80% estate grown. The location itself is nice; the building had a cozy feel to it, and lots of space indoors and you can walk in the vineyard. And my service was pretty good; my server was new, but he was attentive and at least tried to answer my questions (although nobody seemed sure what the definition of a 'Claret' was, other than it had something to do with Bordeaux and the British). The wines, however, were so-so. "Easy drinking" is the best description; nothing struck me as bold, and while some whites trended towards sweet only a few were overly so. It was difficult to take detailed tasting notes because few gave especially noticeable bouquets or impacted my palate. Whites: The Barrel Select Chardonnay was buttery; Totally White was...crisp? I think? The Seyval didn't hit me with anything noticeable. The Lake Side White was a little sweet but not too much. Reds: I was totally psyched when I saw Tannat. Unfortunately, it was the weakest tasting Tannat I've ever had, despite being 100%. The Cab Franc was OK; I got some of the earthiness I typically expect but not as much as others. The Spotsylvania Claret decent; very generally speaking Clarets (I later learned) are usually lighter colored Bordeaux style red wines, and 'light' is a good definition for this one. The Lake Side Red was hard for me to describe; it was about half Muscat, which is a grape I'm not accustomed to. But it definitely had the best nose of the roster. The rest: The 2014 Essensual was a good desert wine; sweet but bold at the same time. Loved the Concerto red wine blend w/Montmorency cherries; as a sucker for cherry wine this was an easy pick. The Lake Side Sunset was a peach-colored Rose which was OK. If I return to the area, Lake Anna would make a good stop for a picnic, maybe buy a bottle. But bottles under $20 seem to be the best advertisement. read more

We had never been to a winery in VA before (but many others across the US and abroad) and made the mistake of starting at Mattaponi (see posted review if interested). We almost didn't make the visit to Lake Anna due to the poor previous experience but decided to give it a try. Upon arrival, we shared what had happened and there was definite confusion as to why we were served the bottle in the first place (we showed them the picture of the bottle). We moved on and spoke about wine preferences and they delivered exactly what we were seeking. We sat outside overlooking the beautiful grapes and enjoyed our first true VA winery experience. Thank you to the lovely ladies managing that day for such a pleasant visit (and changing our attitude about VA wineries). We stopped in as this was one of the few wineries we haven't been to over the years in VA. Upon entering, they were busy and even though they had a few people working the tasting bar, they appeared rushed and were pouring wines to taste without giving any background or info on the wine, other than the name. They had two nice, dry wines and the rest were either sweet or not what we prefer. The venue is nice looking and their vineyard is pretty old (by VA standards) having been planted in 1982 by one of the best VA wine consultants. read more

During the summer, there's always something fun going on during the weekends at this winery. It's just a couple of miles from the lake, so you can get your outdoor boating/fishing/swmming fix and then head over in the evening for a concert or special event. The annual Cajun Zydeco festival is coming up on July 10th and it's always packed, as is the big Beach Blast which features several regional wineries. They also have Wi-Fi now, so you can taste the award-winning red blend, Enigme (my niece Karen's fave) or sip some Spotsylvania Claret, which makes a great gift since the labels depict local Civil War battles. read more

The winery and tasting room is pretty small but the atmosphere is beautiful. We sat outside for the afternoon and drank a little white wine. There is limited seating outside so I would bring a blanket for busier days. The wine tasting has 11 wines total and everything is super affordable. Love their table whites. Adorable little winery. The staff were very friendly, and the kids loved the stuffed bear. I greatly appreciated that it was handicapped accessible. The wine flights were tasty. And they worked! I enjoyed this small family winery and the $5.00 wine tasting was enjoyable. For $5.00 you get to keep a wine glass with the winery logo and sample several wines. On Sunday I really wanted to take a tour but the owner told me that they were not doing tours because of the lack of staff and crew. I did have a chance to walk around the winery which beautiful. If you video the website you will see that there's always a planned event which I do plan on attending one before the year is over. Everyone was friendly and the wines were all good, I ended up buying three bottles to take with me home. Being that this was my very first time visiting a winery I didn't know what to expect but this place had a down to earth welcome feeling as soon as I walked into the building. Maybe it was the fact that the owner's dog was right at home walking around welcoming everyone and the owner was nice and helpful. Lake Anna Winery is one of the oldest spots in the state, I'd give it three and a half stars vs. four stars if only because the tasting was rather rushed (we arrived at 4:30--not the fault of the winery, but they did rush us a bit). So much in fact I don't remember much about the wines, other than they were a little sweeter than I was used to. Énigme stood out as a fine Meritage-style blend, and their Merlot was smooth and tasty. They have ample picnic tables outside, and an indoor tasting room with a fireplace that was not in use when we visited. There are not many wineries in this area of Virginia but Lake Anna is close enough to Cooper that you could visit both wineries in one day. I preferred Cooper, they weren't as rushed and seem more enthusiastic there. Plus the wines are better. read more

Beautiful tasting room and large patio with tables overlooking the rows of grapevines. I was undecided between the white wine options so I was offered a taste of all three!! The Chardonnay was only mildly "oaky" and surprisingly refreshing but I opted for the Seyval Blanc which was perfectly crisp and ideal for such a hot afternoon. I would have equally enjoyed either bottle and look forward to drinking the additional bottle we purchased to bring home! I also appreciated how welcoming the staff is regarding dogs - we were encouraged to bring our pups inside to cool off and hang out in the tasting room. This is my second visit to the Lake Anna Winery and it was just as good the second time around. You take the long drive past all of the grapes to arrive at the building. The tasting is $2 if you don't want a glass and $5 if you do. There's a cute dog that likes to sleep on top of the wine cases while they are stocking the shelves. It was a Wednesday, but it was the 4th of July so the tasting bar was full, but the service was still good. In fact, that almost benefits you in a way because we got a couple extra tastings because someone else would pour the wine not knowing where we had stopped last. I tried all of the wines and a couple of the standouts were the Seyval Blanc, Claret, and the Lakeside wines. Obviously, whatever wine you like is a personal preference, but Lake Anna Winery has some good ones. I especially liked that after the tasting we were asked if there was something that we wanted to try again. This is great if you weren't sure about something, but try it again and find you can't leave the winery without that bottle. Lake Anna Winery is in a good spot to get all of the summertime visitors and year-rounders. They also offer events all of the time and now have free wi-fi. read more

I am sitting here by the fireplace drinking a glass of wine after our tasting and listening to great live music by Darcy Dawn; what a warm, comfortable atmosphere making for an enjoyable experience! I'm very pleased with the wine tastings - we bought 2 bottles and we have been relaxing and listening to live music. It is packed and everyone is really enjoying themselves! We met the owner and several family members. One took the time to talk to my honey about the big black bear he shot that is here in the tasting room. Customer service was nice. The owner Eric gave my family and I a wonderful tour around the winery. He discussed the many methods he uses to make his wine, as well as a full history of the farm and vineyard. His wines include: cab franc, seyval blanc, chambourcin, merlot, 2 types of chardonnays (oaked and unoaked), and a number of dessert wines. Most of his wines are not as young as most Virginia wineries are and it shows! He has a number of sweet dessert wines that are high in residual sugar. In fact, he has one that is over 10% RS. Lake Anna was another stop on our Heart of Virginia Wine Trail excursion on Saturday. It definitely ranks up there as one of my favorite wineries of the day for a few reasons: 1. The property is absolutely gorgeous! It was pretty chilly outside while we were there (January weather), so we weren't able to fully embrace the natural beauty, but I could definitely see myself coming back and enjoying wine and lunch on the patio. The outdoor seating looked super inviting! 2. The large interior features multiple tables, perfect for enjoying a picnic lunch. The bf planned ahead and packed a picnic basket for us (complete with delicious homemade sandwiches), and Lake Anna offered the ideal venue for enjoying our lunch. 3. The tasting was great! The woman who facilitated our tasting was super friendly and knowledgeable, and didn't rush as while we leisurely enjoyed the experience. She also made us feel incredibly welcome when we asked if we could bring in our own picnic lunch. Of course, we had to choose a bottle to accompany our meal, so we went with the merlot. Definitely recommend! 4. Two words: the fireplace. This seriously added the perfect level of coziness to the ambiance. I mean, who doesn't love a fire on a chilly day? I look forward to visiting again during warmer weather, with a picnic basket in hand and my camera ready for some beautiful photo ops. read more

I would like to first preface this comment by saying I have visited a TON of wineries, more specifically, Northern VA wineries. This one is probably one of the worst I have visited. Just left Lake Anna Winery for their end of Summer Jazz night and must say that we had a very unpleasant experience. We entered and the place was busy. We were greeted at the table by the owners and they were fantastic and very welcoming which makes me feel bad that I have to write this, however I can't say the same for anyone else that worked there. The lady that tended the bar gave decent to bad service and the wines really weren't that good. I bought a bottle and it was mediocre at best. They had a Jazz band playing also and they were decent sounding, however they were very rude. The lead singer ate a plate of food while he sang to the audience. It was extremely unprofessional and rude to the audience. Have you ever been to a show where the lead singer enjoyed his dinner while singing a song!?!? When we mentioned it to the sound engineer, the engineer was rude to us also. The winery has a cool atmosphere and location, but the overall experience they deliver is lacking. Will definitely not return to this winery next time we visit Lake Anna. Save your money and stay home. read more

I walked in with my wife and 2 children in hopes of buying a few bottles of wine for some friends. When I walked in, it was fairly quiet. I looked at a few bottles and then walked up to the bar. I waited about 5 minutes and then reached over the bar to grab a wine listing. I read over the listing for several minutes and made eye contact with some of the ladies at the bar who were serving.
