The staff was friendly, but unfortunately I had a really disappointing experience with my perm. I specifically asked for a soft, natural-looking perm to add texture and loose waves, and that's what I was told I would get. Instead, the result was the complete opposite. The stylist also didn't take my haircut or hairstyle into account, so the curls ended up laying in the opposite direction of how my hair naturally falls, making it extremely difficult to style. I tried giving it time to settle before leaving a review, hoping it would improve, but it never did. I'm especially disappointed after spending over $300 on a result that was nothing like what I asked for. Haircut was bad. Really bad. The barber did not listen to a word I was saying and basically gave me some haircut I specifically didn't ask for. On top of that I was in the chair getting my haircut for well over an hour and twenty minutes. He smashed my ears down for over half the time and that was pretty uncomfortable. At a certain point I just asked to leave. Honestly I can't remember being more unhappy with a haircut. All that said, service is great. Everyone is really nice. The space is really cool and comfortable. Prices are reasonable. But the haircut is hell. I highly advise staying away. I found out my barber (Scott) was pretty recently out of barber school so I imagine this place hires younger, less experienced guys, which helps keep the prices down but the haircuts can be hit or miss. Matte Blvck - Cool Vibes, But Some Room to Improve Visited Matte Blvck in North Park for a haircut today. The salon has a great aesthetic--modern, edgy, and artistic, with some really nice mural work that gives it a unique vibe. It's conveniently located and easy to get into, which is always a plus. The staff were friendly and welcoming, which I appreciated. That said, there are a few areas that could use improvement. The interior could benefit from better upkeep--some visible dust and stains around the air vents, walls and a bit of general clutter made the space feel significantly less polished than it looks from the outside. The biggest issue for me was the stylist. While personable, he was frequently distracted--taking phone calls and chatting with others during the appointment. Unfortunately, I also didn't feel heard when I gave clear instructions about my haircut. I asked not to cut too close at the back due to a scar, and to avoid cutting too short on top and sides because of cowlicks. Unfortunately, both requests were overlooked. While I won't be returning to that stylist, I might give the salon another shot with someone else--there's definitely potential here. Just be sure to communicate your preferences clearly and perhaps ask for someone with strong attention to detail. For me it was always just another check in the box and whenever I need a haircut I always look up the nearest Barber in the area and go there. Rene is a great barber! I moved to North Park about 6 months ago, and discovered Matte Blvck right around the time it opened. I was really hesitant to leave my last barber shop, as I'd been going to them for years, but they were way out in East County and the drive just wasn't worth it anymore. I'm super glad I tried Mayte Blvck, because like I said, Rene is a great barber, and has been my go-to ever since. I'm not great at communicating what I want out of a haircut, but Rene gives me exactly what I wanted (or better) every time. Rene is really thorough, and I've never found a literal hair out of place. Rene trims the long hair on the top of my head super evenly, and also does a flawless skin fade on the back and sides. A lot of barbers struggle to work with long hair, especially when the sides and back are shaved, but Rene makes it look easy. Speaking of shaves, Rene is also one of the few barbers I've had who really knows how to use a straight razor. I never get razor burn or skin irritation, just a very smooth shave. As for the shop, Matte Blvck is very chill and modern. You can see the professionalism all of the barbers carry in their work, but they also don't take themselves too seriously. It's a very relaxed environment where everyone seems to get along and joke around. There's none of that forced barbershop conversation either, so if you're not the most talkative person (and I am not), you can just sit back, relax, and get a great haircut. 10/10 would recommend Rene at Matte Blvck! read more
