I had a frustrating experience at the Matteson Recreation Center with a front desk worker named Laura. My dad, who had a stroke, has a valid membership and we came so I could briefly record him working out for stroke survivor awareness, since he's building a platform to help others going through the same thing. I wasn't there to use the gym or any equipment, just to record him, but Laura refused to let me in and was very rude about it. I understand there are rules, but the lack of compassion and professionalism in that situation was really disappointing. read more

Deceptive practices. I was sold 4 personal training sessions for $77. I was told by Kay-Kay (general manage) that it was a winter storm deal to get people in the gym (regular value $288) and that LA fitness would absorb the difference. That it was no commitment, month to month if I wanted to the continue & rate would not change. I was also told that I would meet with my trainer (Marty, who was great btw) once a week for 4 sessions. That weeks 1-4 was body mechanics and basic strength training. if I choose to move forward it would be more nutrition and strength focuse etc... As we signed the contract she throughly pointed out to reassure me that there was no obligation. she highlighted that N/a was placed on term fee, N/a payments due. During my second session 2/13/26, Marty mentioned that I had a package to meet with him once a month. and he had to book this session ahead.. I told him that we were suppose to meet once a week from what Kay-Kay & I discussed. after the session, I talked to Kay Kay who was at first confused to why there was a misunderstanding, she pulled up the contact and explained that I had two sessions left and that I was PIF (paid in full).. She said she was going to honor what she told me and clear it up with Marty and give me a call. on 2/18/26 Marty texted again asking if I had upgraded to once a week package & again confused I replied that Kay Kay had yet to reach out and I'd follo up with her regarding said package. He texted back later that evening stating that he had spoke with the regional manager about the mix up and I was give two additional sessions. On 2/20/26 Marty texted and said tge Matteson location was closing and he wanted to get my sessions booked. I told him I had a minor injury and that I still needed to talk with kay Kay to clarify. On Monday 2/23/26 I called to speak to Kay Kay and was told she no longer works at that location and was directed to call Kirstin at the Chicago ridge location about training package... Kirstin was not available when I called. On Friday 2/27/26 I called Chicago Ridge and spoke with kirstin (who I believe is Kay kay) who said she could not cancel or make any changes and that it could only be done at my home gym (Matteson) I explained the situation about Kay Kay and what was sold to me.. she (Kirstin) directed my to 949-255-7200 la fitness customer service.. I spoke to Adonis, who quickly referred to my signed contract where it stated the monthly fee and agreement. that he could not go by "hearsay" just the contract and 50% buyout. I'm insulted at this point because why would make any of this up?? there was no $77 down or any sort of payment plan mentioned. I told him to cancel and that I did not agree with his verbage of "buyout" because that would imply my participation or knowledge of a "buyin"... he stated that he would need a card to charge the fee and I told him to charge the card on file because again I do not agree with any of these terms or contract that was probably altered after I signed... just tell me it's $75 per session... the bait and switch is diabolical... Adonis said he could not charge my card on file and I did not give him a card to charge so he said I woul be held to the terms of the contract. I hung up the phone and called Matteson back and Jake said he could not cancel and that I had to call Chicago ridge. I then call customer service back and spoke with Tido who said "like Adonis said, there is a buyout fee and he's not going back and forth with me about it" I told him I never agreed to any package or payment plan and that I would be writing reviews on the deceptive practices of LA Fitness on every consumer site. I am a parent of two children, ages 6 and 11, who recently attended Matteson Community Center's summer camp. Yesterday when I woke my daughter up for camp she did not want to go. When I asked her why, she told me that kids have to do wall squats when they are bad at camp. I asked her what a wall squat was and she was able to get out of bed and bend her knees with her hands stretched out in front of her body. I immediately woke up my older daughter and asked her about wall squats. She told me if the counselors did not know which camper was bad, the entire group had to do a wall squat. In addition, she said she had to do a wall squat once because the counselor thought that she was talking during quiet time. My husband and I decided to take the girls to camp, but to speak with the staff about our concerns. Upon arrival at camp, I asked to go to the office and spoke with someone at the desk about speaking to Eddie Smith, the program manager. He was not present, and she took my name and phone number telling me he would call me when he arrived. I asked her to let the camp counselor for my two girls group know that if they were bad or did anything that warranted a consequence, I would like to be called and I would come to pick them up. I also let her know that I did not want my daughters to receive any type of physical punishment and to contact me immediately if there was a problem. The program manager, Eddie Smith, called me shortly after I arrived home about my concerns. I was upset and told him that my daughters explained that campers have to do wall squats when they are bad and that I was never informed. I mentioned the parent information packet that we were required to sign and the parent orientation I attended prior to the beginning or camp, which never mentioned any physical punishment. He told me the camp counselors came to him because the kids were not listening and that is what they came up with in lieu of a write up. I told him again that I was never informed and said that other parents needed to be informed of the practice so they are able to make a decision whether or not they wanted to enroll their children in a program where they receive physical punishments. He was unable to tell me how long students have to hold in a squat position but said that they are not harmful to kids. He said his background is in physical education and he knows others who have a fitness background and they also said it is not harmful to kids. I mentioned again that parents are not informed and he said that parents call him and tell him to give their kids more jumping jacks. He admitted that it is not listed in the parent guide and said if I would stop talking and cutting him off he would tell me why. I told him my husband would like to speak with him because he drops off my girls and was wondering why this was never mentioned to him at drop off. I also told him we would be coming back to the center. At that time he said we were free to come to the center and he would be there and he ended the call. Next, I visited the Matteson Police Department and asked who I could speak to about the physical punishments being administered at the camp. A clerk told me to go to the Matteson Village Hall. Upon arrival at the village hall I spoke to Lorie Webster, Director of Recreational Services and Community Engagement. She told me she was new to her position and unaware about the policies of the summer camp. I explained all the events and information that took place before I arrived at the village hall. She gave me her phone number and told me to call her once I safely picked up my girls and to let her know if I spoke with anyone. I went to the office of Matteson Community Center and requested to pick up my daughters. I was provided with a clipboard to sign them out. I explained that the program manager hung up on me and requested to speak with the director. The director, Lisa Hall, was unavailable at the time, but she called me shortly after I left the center. I shared with her the conversation I had with Mr. Smith and let her know that he abruptly hung up on me, refusing to speak with my husband. She apologized and told me that she was unaware of any physical punishment for campers. She said she needed to conduct an investigation. She told me she would get back to me at the latest next week with an update. Later that evening Ms. Hall called to tell me that she had spoken with human resources and she was planning to work with Mr. Smith to provide a training for camp staff. She said the camp would provide campers with a verbal warning and call parents if students did not follow camp rules. She said going forward the camp would not be using physical punishments and would allow parents to provide consequences to their children. To date, there has been no information shared with parents to inform them about the physical punishments that campers were subjected to this summer. read more

New Treadmills by Matrix...VERY NICE. This is a great community center and a valuable asset to the south suburbs. The gym area has a variety of machines for all levels and interests, including many free weights. The indoor track serves its purpose and is comfortable on the feet. Several machines are in front of second story windows so there is plenty of light and the feeling of not being closed in. Most people say hi but generally stay focused on their workout, which I love. I've seen people of various ages and body types. Again, people are usually focused on their own agenda so I've never felt awkward, not in the changing room or on the floor while working on my pudge. The classes are challenging but greatly effective, when consistently attended. They center has a good group of class leaders who seem to enjoy what they do. I've never been pressured by trainers like they do at other local gyms. My next goal is to use the pool. It is on the first floor and looks so inviting. Hoping to update soon... read more

This is a beautiful facility with many classes (check out their webpage for details) and lots of equipment. There is a walking path on the top floor and a pool in the lower level. Classrooms and offices are on the main floor. There are outdoor playing fields, too, and they are huge. I have attended the Center in the morning, work-week hours. All ages attend. Very nice locker rooms. The employees are very helpful and friendly. Note: this is a community center, but if you are a Blue Cross-Blue Shield insured you may be able to enjoy the services offered by the Matteson Community Center at a greatly reduced cost. If you do qualify but are not a resident you will need to obtain a Community Center photo ID. If you are looking for a more personal workout activity center this is it. With all the latest cardio and weights you can achieve your goals. Don't forget the Olympic size swimming pool and courts. Personal trainers are available as well as massage therapy. Cons are the hours it does close earlier than most. read more

My husband and I were searching for a gym in the area. We visited the LA Fitness and the staff wasn't super friendly nor was the place very clean. After reading some recommendations we decided to check out the community center in Matteson. We asked the staff for a tour and they were very friendly and showed us everything. There is a very nice pool inside that can be used for lap swimming or their water classes. I have also noticed a lot of parents teaching their young kids how to swim. They also have a sauna, although I doubt we'll be using that. There are also a lot of weight machines and cardio machines upstairs. The best part are all the classes they offer and the great instructors. They're very energetic and do a decent job convincing you that you actually enjoy working out! They also have an outdoor track, outdoor tennis and basketball courts, and water play area. Another great reason to choose this gym is creepy guys don't bug me when I'm working out. This is a great place for families or for adults wanting to get in shape. I highly recommend giving this place a shot. read more
