It was quickly dried and styled in center or side parts, with lots of volume, lift and swing. Elegant and easy. Derek said he couldn't understand me. I should have left immediately. What I have now is an inexplicable cut, 2-5 " off, barely chin length, huge amounts of hair removed, wispy layers everywhere, and texturizing. He has activated a mass of waves and curls never seen before. From the front, the shape is a cartoonish wide diamond. From the sides, a fat wedge. This is the opposite of what is required for copious, European, fine, porous hair with a nape curl and minimal wave. Derek basically has created a White girl Afro. He somehow dried it beautifully, disguising the weird architectural structure by using a tiny brush on myriad narrow strands, drying them straight, and contorting them via elaborate manual sculpting techniques, product and nearly an hour of work. Maybe he planned to do twice-weekly blowdries on it. I have spent many days and dollars elsewhere experimenting with product, techniques and professional advice while attempting to cope. Derek pleasantly refunded the charges and apologized for the "inconvenience." This is far worse than inconvenient.

When we got through with the consultation and he began to work, I was very confident and got good vibes from him when he's explaining everything that he's doing because we started with the color first, and even for my haircut, he explained everything by feeling my head first and looking at my growth patterns, and whether I had wave or curl or straight hair. I've never had all this from a hairdresser! He made me feel very comfortable in his salon and it's very cute! I was really surprised at the color because he used four separate tubes using a little of this and a little of that and measuring every bit of it and writing it down so it can be duplicated, and when we got through it not only repaired my other hair color, but it was exactly the shade of red copper that I wanted, and he told me he could do that using a developer made from seaweed that helps your color not fade, and those of us with red color, we know how quickly it fades! He puts everything into it! I went from having stringy long hair to a graduated, layered swing Bob with bangs that swept and everything was measured and although it seemed complicated. What he was doing was he made it simple for me to take care of, and I couldn't believe how well everything falls into place. He asks you what level of instruments you use on your hair and how much effort you want to put in. It's actually designed for your lifestyle, amazing! And when I wanted a pixie cut, he was able to do it flawlessly. Every. Time. I always got asked who cut my hair because it was so cute, and I always sent people his way. Here I am doing it again. I travel 40 minutes one way, just to have him cut my hair, and I'll continue to do so as long as he's a hairdresser. When I chose to let my hair grow from a pixie cut, he did a beautiful job to help me grow it out gracefully and cute at every stage (a nearly impossible feat). He has his own space at Mattison Avenue salons in Richardson, so it's a bit more of an intimate space, but I love it and all the beautiful plants he takes care of by a large glass window with lots of natural light.
