We dropped in with an old friend at Matthew's 1600 on Frederick west of downtown Catonsville (Apr 2026). This is a familiar place that updates the look and menu now and then, yet still feels like home. We often get a beet salad when it's available. Matthew's is scrumptious, with tender sweet juicy roasted beets, tasty grilled chicken, red onion slices and fresh spinach, tangy crumbled bleu cheese, and delightful candied walnuts, complimented by tart raspberry vinaigrette. By the way, it's gluten-free. We loved the rich cream of crab soup du jour, full of crab lumps and full of flavor, with a little spice from good old Old Bay. Delicious and dreamy. Their quesadillas were served a la carte as an appetizer, loaded with savory roasted chicken, heavy with a mild cheese and a lightly spicy flavorful thick red sauce, rolled in tender lightly seared flour tortillas. Generous and satisfying. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Matthew's building dates from around 1862 as a station and hotel at the end of a horse-car line, before electricity! It's been through around 5 names over the years, and has been the Parsons family's Matthew's 1600 since 2004. First time visiting Matthew's 1600. It was packed when we visited but we didn't have a hard time getting seated. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It seemed like a local favorite place.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I for sure thought because of the business, the food had to be good! And it was!! I got the egg roll sampler and loved it. The pasta was recommended and I was not disappointed. The salmon Victoria was supposed to come with a chèvre cheese on it but it was forgotten. We were able to flag down our waiter and inform him of the error and he went to the kitchen to get some on the side. It wasn't on it as it was intended but it was still good. Graduation vibes were in the air and what better way to recognize that than some mussels? They swam in a delicious broth and had a nice loaf of bread. My dining companion's Beaumont was nicely layered and a good next step. The pot roast sandwich was equally as tasty but a bit forlorn when placed on a large plate along with the tres petite coleslaw side that was a substitute for fries. The waitress was delightful and the perfect complement to a lazy day afternoon nosh. And did I mention the elderberry drink of the day? Fantastic!!! read more

Enjoyed myself so much I had to run it back twice lol I love this place. I love their salmon , mash and asparagus. The " Beaumont" is my fav dish. They are very well accommodating if you need adjustments to your food and the veggies are always fresh! The wings were a fan favorite amongst the table. The turkey club and the Greek salad which had shrimp and crab in it were superb. I want to start this off by saying that as many times as we have dined at Matthews1600, I was ever so happy that I selected them as a place to have my 45th high school reunion! I went with a buffet as I knew people would be straggling in from many places. Everything was top notch. Todd Thomas and his staff were absolutely fantastic! I only had a few requests and they were all met with no issues whatsoever! We've been coming to Matthew's for many years, sometimes weekly for trivia night. Food and service has been good and consistent. The Pasta Annapolis is a delicious seafood dish that I get frequently. We ordered a Crab Cake sandwich and Cod Fish Filet with fries. The crab cake was broiled but it didn't seem cooked. It was cold and mushy. My friends said the Cod was okay but not warm and needed seasoning. The manager stopped at some tables to talk to customers but he didn't come to our table to ask how our meals were. I resent having an automatic gratuity added to a bill when the service is sub-par. (We were a party of 5 and according to their policy, that is what they do). They weren't that busy at the time of our visit, but our server kept disappearing for long periods of time. She took our order and left. She never offered to refill our water glasses, didn't bring the extra salad dressings or take home containers we had requested and she couldn't be found to ask for these items. Once the food was brought out, we were basically ignored. Tipping is supposed to be for service provided. Our server didn't provide a 20% gratuity service experience. Normally, we would have requested to speak to the manager about the mediocre service, but when speaking with management (Adam, I believe) when making our reservation, I found them to be very inflexible, so why bother? read more

Matthew's 1600 is another locally owned restaurant in Catonsville that took us a long time to give it a try. Matthew's is as hot and cold as they come. On our most recent visit a few weeks ago we had one of these hot and cold experiences. They are advertising a burger special on their outdoor sign. But the burger special isn't available to order due to the season. Then why is the burger special on the outdoor sign if you aren't honoring it? Fine. We ordered off of the menu. My partner ordered a seafood dish and it was delicious. I ordered a meatball sub platter and it was awful. The meatballs were a weirdly spicy flavor not mentioned on the menu, the bread was mushy, the sauce was clumpy, and the cheese was white american cheese which does not belong on a meatball sub. We were both very tired that day and I just ate the food and shut up because while it was the worst meatball sub I ever had it was still edible and I was starving after a long day at work. I looked at the menu and quickly chose a monte cristo to eat. I was intrigued by the "crush bar" on the cocktails menu. My first time to Maryland (that I remember in any case) do I decided I needed to try a flight of crushes. Orange, Creamsicle, Pineapple, and Strawberry Lemon. And you will have a hard time convincing me they even have alcohol..just yummy juice! Needless to say, my lunch was fantastic. And I read about the history of the location on the menu, and this place wins on all counts!! My family and I dined at Matthew's 1600 randomly on a Friday night. My son visited the restaurant previously with a group of friends, so we allowed him to select the restaurant for the night. He did a pretty good job. I had two an order of mussels and two margaritas. The mussels were pretty tasty and the margaritas were nice and strong. My son and husband really enjoyed their dishes as well. The decor inside the restaurant left a lot to be desired. We were seated in a booth and the booth oddly moved when I sat down. It wasn't secured to the floor. The restaurant also has carpet, which looked old and dingy. Not sure how they keep up with cleaning the carpet in a restaurant. The ambience of a restaurant is just as important as the food, so that really took alway from the experience. A rehab is definitely suggested! Otherwise, my experience was decent. read more

We were able to sit in a private dining room and the decor was very classy and comfortable. The waitress made some recommendations that we followed and I'm glad we did. I had no knowledge of this restaurant, in fact it was a suggestion from a co-worker of mine. I am so glad he did because the experience was really good. They feature a wide variety of appetizers, entrees and desserts that will satisfy anyone's palate! Pasta, seafood, beef, chicken or salads - You can't go wrong here! Matthews has a main bar area that is full service with seating all around with table tops. In the back is their dining room that gives a very nice warm and welcoming feel. This is a great choice for lunch or dinner - They also offer holiday specials during specific times of the year which I highly recommend to try! I have been to this restaurant a few time and had good experiences overall I ordered the surf and turf on10/20/2024 and when I got home the crab cake wasnt there. I called the restaurant to advise and also let them know of the price on the website was the same as I was charged. I went back to the restaurant, and they did advise the site was not updated with pricing. I was a bit disappointed, however management was so great and apologetic and explain the situation. They said they could quickly make me 2 crab cakes and provides a discount. In the end I was pleased more so with the customer service, them taking accountability and offer a win win solution. I've been back a few times now, and it still seems to be hit or miss. Sometimes the food will be decent. Sometimes not so much. The most recent visit I got the seafood trio. Not recommended. The fish was way overcooked, and had consistency more like chicken. The 4 shrimp were bland, though cooked correctly. The lemon butter didn't do much for the fish or shrimp. The crab cake was ok, not bad. All in all, a pretty bland, small portioned plate for the price. The service was very good read more

Dinner in Catonsville was unexpected & we choose Matthew's 1600 & I am so glad we did. I love this place. Very welcoming, great staff, great environment. The menu is fairly extensive with something for every palate. I started with a pomegranate margarita and the bartender needs a raise because it was top notch. We shared the wings which were another hit. The salad selections are some of the best offered when dining out. We could not decide on entree or sandwiches and ended up on flatbread lane. We split the Figgy Jam and Brie LaLa and both were flavorful and great portions. Never made it to dessert but next time, as will definitely be back. Wow! Matthew's is an example of how the smallest towns can produce the best restaurants. The food is terrific (although the pancakes I ordered once were very sweet), the service is fast, and the young wait staff is surprisingly very professional. The hostesses are efficient and warm, and the waiters are friendly. My food has never come out wrong at Matthews- even when I remove things from certain dishes. 3.5 stars. It's a large place with a lot of parking. The service is good. The interior is a mix of renovations and worn cracked both covers and pietened plumbing. There's a large bar with stools. Downstairs are party catering rooms. The pot roast is very good though Deusenbergs is excellent. The teriyaki BBQ pork chop is good, cooked properly but no noteworthy taste. Eh, I thought this place was just ok. The prices are a bit high for sandwiches and salads at lunch-$16-22 for a sandwich or salad with protein. That would be fine if they were great or the atmosphere was tempting, but I did not find that to be the case. I probably won't go back with so many other choices nearby. read more

We went to this restaurant for Thanksgiving and the food was bland and cold. When they changed out trays they would put the old cold items on top of the new warm items - gross. It was $55 dollars a person which is outrageous for the lack of quality. Service was slow as well. A frozen pizza would have been better. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

I don't think I have pictures of the food if I do, I will upload at a later date! This particular time, we had post roast , steamed shrimp & crab dip. The shrimp were good and juicy! Yesterday I celebrated a very special birthday and topped off the day with dinner at Matthews 1600 in Catonsville. I have enjoyed lunches there but never dinner. I chose it because I craved prime rib and a baked potato and COULD NOT FIND IT on local menus. I got sidetracked, though, because rockfish was on the menu. YUM! That beat prime rib. However, it came with a side of rice, corn, and crab with Old Bay, a spice my tummy can no longer handle. I ordered the potato to substitute, but in addition they made the rice dish with no Old Bay just for me. OMG, was it DELICIOUS!! (I think it would make a nice entree by itself if you beef up the crab a little.). So then it was dessert time and my birthday, so how could I resist? They have a dessert consisting of two of the biggest chocolate chip cookies in memory served as a sandwich with ice cream. My husband and I split it. Yum! We could barely walk out!
