This place lives up to the hype! It claims to be the home of the July Lucy and after tasting it, I'd say that's accurate! There was a short line when we arrived, but we were seated within 15 minutes. The burger is perfectly cooked and seasoned. Don't ignore warnings about the melted cheese in the center. You will burn your mouth if you are not careful! Fries were also yummy and definitely big enough to share. Not great for large groups as it has very limited seating and parking. Went to Matt's to celebrate my best round of golf in 7 years 81 @ Nearby Hiawatha Golf Course. The Cheese burger with fried onions was perfect. I Added a Hamms Tallboy for $5.25 The Bar tender asked if wanted a 1/2 fry (for an Additional $5.95) I opted for what I thought were free chips Nope. $2.00. Tried to pay with my Vikings Bank of America VISA nope. Only cash & check? Wait what? Trip to the ATM costs me $2.00 to take out MY MONEY. I love Mads bar so much the way you eat that cheeseburger and the hot cheese in the middle. It's so tasty and so wonderful but if you get a grilled cheese sandwich and put a juice, Lucy in the middle, that's even double fun the staff is wonderful and the beer is amazing. read more

Very well known, and very busy. We both had the Jucy Lucy - which has received lots of publicity. But in reality, it's relatively small. Good but not great taste. At the suggestion of the wait person, we had a half order of fries, rather than a full order. Half order was plenty. Matt's is very well known. We arrived at 11:12 - it opened at 11:00 AM and were seated right away. By noon there was a line out the door and on the sidewalk - this is typical. Here's the thing - This place is for tourists. Locals stopped at eating at Matt's years ago. At this point, it is just living off hype it no longer deserves. If you gotta go, bring cash and brace yourself for long lines, rude staff, far too limited menu, and overpriced food that just honestly isn't that good. (Also, they don't use ice cubes for some reason? So weird.) There are so many better places to go in Minneapolis! Finally tried this place for the first time the other day. I was surprised that they offer the Jucy Lucy well done, which is great for a no pink burger kinda gal like myself. Our server smartly advised us to wait awhile before our first bite into the burger, which I frankly didn't take seriously enough, as the molten cheese did slightly burn my tongue. As an experience, it was a fun spot to check off the Minneapolis bucket list. However, I think I'd prefer a traditional cheeseburger in all honesty. Out of town review. No trip to Minneapolis would be complete without a trip to Matt's bar. This place gets packed, so be prepared to wait if you're coming at popular times. We were lucky and got a parking spot on the street outside the place. This place runs like a well oiled machine considering there's only 2 to 3 people helping customers and one person behind the griddle cooking up Everything!! Service was quick and a little short, but that's understandable considering how busy this place is and how many people are coming and going. It's not a place to sit and chat and eat. Walls are filled with pictures of a lot of customers and even some famous ones. They have a cool Lego replica build of the building hanging on the wall. Love how the menu is short and sweet and concise. We ordered two juicy Lucie's and a full order of fries. Pro tip the fries are very big portion size. My husband and I had a hard time finishing the whole order so if it's just you and one or two other people I suggest getting the half order fries. They have a lot of local beer on tap, which was nice. Got a nice juicy waterfall of cheese with the first bite. It lived up to its juicy name. The burger is itself is simple but made very well and flavorful. The crowd is a mix of locals and tourist. Brownie points for having a highchair. Would definitely come back next time. I'm in town. Whoever it is that actually invented the jucy lucy burger, one cannot deny this establishment's popularity and there's a good reason for such. Not only is this a great place for people to understand an aspect of Minnesota's food culture, but also this contains a type of burger that has cheese already built into the beef. One can see the cooking process and by looking at the frozen patties, it is impossible to tell that cheese is blended. But upon opening the burger, the liquid cheese just flows out super artlessly, which is amazing. The burger is a bit small and the price to me still doesn't really justify the size of the burger, even if it's a very unique kind. When I use a knife to cut the burger, like I have mentioned, the liquid cheese just flows out and that is amazing to watch. One doesn't need any ketchup or mustard to go with a jucy lucy, and in fact, one shouldn't put anything else on it. By itself it is no doubt very juicy and succulent. One thing to note is that the establishment is cash only, and there is an ATM in the store, but to avoid service fees, I would recommend people to have cash ready prior to visiting. Another thing worth mentioning is that when the server hears that you intend to share the burger, she automatically includes a knife for you, which I think is very attentive. read more

Embarrassed to say that I grew up in Minnesota, left for 11 years, and came back nine years ago...and this is the first time I've been to Matt's Bar. We got there right when they opened and it filled up quickly! Good music, and love all the stuff on the walls! Service was friendly and quick, and the menu options are limited (which I love, since I always have trouble making decisions). However, there was no choice because I went to try the infamous Juicy Lucy. It didn't disappoint. Hot and juicy, dripping down my hands-- I got it with grilled onions, and it was amazing. The large fry baskets are giant, and I ate so much for lunch that I didn't need dinner. I'd like to say that I would try something different the next go around, but I don't think I will. Wow. The juicy lucy was absolutely amazing! This was the first spot we ate at after landing in Minneapolis and it was so good we braved the long line on a Sunday to experience the greatness again. We each ordered a jucy lucy and shared an order of fries. The wait was not long considering how busy it is and you see them consistently churning out burgers from the counter bar area. When we got our food, the server advised us to let the burger cool a little before eating but it was hard to wait since we were hungry after a 3 hour flight! The first bite into the jucy lucy, the melted cheese (and a bit of oil) started oozing out and it is quite hot! The second bite is when it really started coming together, the flavors of the juicy patty and melted cheese with the sliced pickles. It sounds very simple but this is one of the best burgers we've had. The fries were also near perfect, they were hot, thinly sliced, crispy and a little oily, but the perfect pairing for a burger. Service is good, they're really nice and try to minimize the wait time. The slowest part was paying, but they're working hard getting food to tables and cleaning up with minimal staff. Overall Matt's is a must go if you travel to Twin Cities. You won't leave disappointed. Just remember to bring cash and come prepared to eat (and maybe wait a little)! read more

Was able to order my burgers quickly and went off exploring while they were cooking. I have to say -- for a bar, this is a good burger! But I don't think it's as good as some Jucy Lucy-lovers describe. Both of the hamburger patties were alright, cooked well and seasoned okay. During our recent trip to Minneapolis we wanted to try the famous local burger known as the Jucy Lucy. We read up that Matt's Bar had the original so that's where we went. It was a relatively small place that was extremely busy which definitely let us know we chose that right place. As busy as it was they were very streamlined and we got sat down in a decent time. A Jucy Lucy is a burger with a large amount of cheese in the middle of it. It's similar to a smash burger but it more of like an oozy delicious cheese in the center. It was everything I wanted it to be as it was one of the most awesome burger type things I've ever experienced. We got some fries as well and they were great as well. There was lots of cool pictures of famous people that had been here as well as some other cool things around. A super awesome dinner that is a must stop for anybody visiting Minneapolis and if I lived up there I'd definitely be a regular. read more

My first time trying a Juicy Lucy!! I have always heard about a Juicy Lucy but never came to try it out. I came here on a weekend around 11:30 I did not think there would be a line but the line was longgg. Luckily, while waiting a worker came out and asked if there was two people waiting, so I got to sit before the bigger groups! I only ended up waiting like 10 minutes max which was great! They only provide street parking but there are a ton around. I would say this place is very small. I love how it looks when you walk in, it is dark and all looks back from the 90's. I sat by the bar area and a worker came up to my friend and I, right away to take our orders. There was only three workers which was the cook, the person at the bar and the server. For how busy this place is they were very efficient with everything! A lot of people were in and out so, I wouldn't say the wait was long, unless you had a big party. I ordered the Juicy Lucy, a half pound of fries, and a root beer. I would say my favorite food was the fries! They were so crispy and had a lot of flavor. I wasn't sure what to except for a Juicy Lucy, I would say it was good, but didn't hit my expectations. I would definitely come back again though. The price was good and the staff did an amazing job! Known for their "Jucy Lucy" which are 2 Patties with cheese cooked inside. My family that lives here likes the Jucy Lucy and especially the fries from here. During the summer they say there are long lines out the door. We can here in December and it was pretty busy for a week night. They only accept cash or checks, no card. We were lucky and got seated quickly, service was also quick and I asked for a beer that goes well with it. My sister in law got a chicken sandwich and I put her lettuce in my Jucy Lucy. Beware to not bite into it quickly because the cheese squirts out. Every bite I took the cheese indeed came out and burned me. Their fries are really good. I have been waiting to come to Matt's bar for can't even tell you how long. Whether it's hearing about it and the birth of the juicy Lucy, or it's hearing people talk about it. We finally had the chance to go. There is only street parking nearby because it is tucked away in the neighborhood. Luckily we were able to find something close. What was surprising, was there was no waitlist. There was just a line. As you can see by the pictures it's actually a small building that only has probably about 25 tables inside. So you have to wait in line. We waited a total about an hour and 10 minutes before we were able to sit down and there was only four of us. The menu is small and quaint, and we were also surprised to see that one person is servicing the whole restaurant on a 5 x 5 grill. Our server finally came over and took our order. And the waiting game began. It was another hour or so before we got our meal. We finally got to break into a juicy Lucy. Hint get the onions. It's delicious and they're very finely diced. Also, the french fries are huge. You can share them between two or three people. And they are delicious. All in all I would say I'm glad I got to try the juicy Lucy, but it wasn't the most amazing burger in the world. read more

We were still able to get a seat at the bar without a wait, and probably waited ~25 minutes to get our food. There's basically just one cook and he's just constantly flipping burgers and frying fries. It was almost mesmerizing to watch him do his thing! By the time we got our food I was HUNGRY and this definitely hit the spot. A well seasoned burger infused with cheese, some carmelized onions, and pickles. Mmm mm mmm. I was lucky enough to only have to wait for about 15 minutes outside and another 5 minutes inside. In June 2024 I only had to wait about 5 minutes inside before I got a seat. Once I was seated it was almost 15 minutes before my order was taken, but that's OK. The place was packed and there was only a bartender, one cook, and one server. The fries are solid and many of them. Perfectly fried and perfectly seasoned. I only got a half order and that was more than enough. The burger is good as well but I guess I just expected more from hearing about the hype. Soft bun, nice char on the burger, and melty cheese, it did check all of the boxes. It is worth it to give Matt's a try and to revisit it every so often.
