SIMPLY STUFFED A full belly is assured after finishing one of the 5-8 Club's famous 'Juicy Lucy' cheeseburgers. I'd read there are two places to try an authentic Juicy Lucy in Minneapolis: Matt's and the 5-8 Club.  Matt's claims to be the original, but it's a smaller divey restaurant, harder to find parking and they only accept cash which is unusual in this day & age.  So, with kids in tow, limited time, and virtually no cash, we chose the 5-8 Club. Getting here was pretty easy; in fact, it was "speak easy" (hehehe).  The 5-8 Club started as bootleggers back in the roaring 20's and later invented the signature molten cheese-filled burger in the 50's.  Although the 5-8 Club has three other locations, this one off of Highway 62 in Minneapolis is the original. The wait was much longer than we were prepared for, I'd guess 20-30 minutes before any food came out.  We were absolutely famished by the time the burgers arrived and dove right in.  My wife gave high praise to the Juicy Lucy ($14.50), a 1/2lb burger stuffed with choice of American, Swiss, or blue cheese. The onion straws ($11) were a tasty concept, but they were too soft and lacked a dipping sauce.  A small cup of blackened ranch, beer cheese, ANYTHING would've been better than the 'nothing' they gave us.  I dug the chicken poppers ($10) with "poppas" sauce, a zippy mixture of bbq, buffalo and other spices.  Fries were fine. I polished off a 'Saucy Sally' ($16.50), a Juicy Lucy topped with shredded lettuce, grilled onions and thousand island dressing.  It was essentially a Big Mac with liquid cheese in the middle, and that's by no means a bad thing.  It was both messy and delicious. Bread = 4 Circuses = 3.5 Atmosphere was that of a midwestern tavern: dark wooden booths, a vaguely musty smell, the aroma of sizzling beef patties with clientele that seemed to be a mix of regulars ordering 'the usual' and tourists like us.  Our server was friendly but check-ins were infrequent. * TL;DR * We couldn't leave the Twin Cities without getting a stuffed burger, now could we? Final thoughts: the Saucy Sally was a very good burger that squeezes into my top 10......but the top 5 spots are still occupied by Bad Apple, Au Cheval, Lockdown (RIP), Empire, and Next Whiskey Bar, all in Chicago / the outlying suburbs. The speed of service was very slow and the onion straws were a disappointment, though apart from that it was a great lunch.  We were glad to stop by, and should we find ourselves here again I'd be happy to try a different iteration of the Juicy Lucy at the 5-8 Club. read more

This place is a hidden gem when it comes to burgers in the Minneapolis area! I came here with a group of friends that had a very small window of time to meet as they were trying to catch a flight so a quick Google search consisting of "Burgers" near "MSP airport" led me to this place and I'm grateful I found it! It's a nice low-key spot that does burgers pretty well and the service was good as well. They do a good job of checking in on you and making sure all of your needs are met. The one challenge I find with this place though is that it's difficult to accommodate a large group of people (5+ people) as their tables are relatively small and if you like to do family style, it can be pretty tricky to have sufficient room for that kind of experience. The fries are definitely from the freezer, lacked flavor and just weren't good. The onion rings were also freezer and had a thick crust on them, very little onion. They also came out cool. Like may be they had been sitting for a while? The juicy Lucy was a joke! Where is the cheese! When the server dropped the burgers off, we noticed how she didn't give us a warning about "Molten cheese" like the other 2 places did. Now we know why, because there was basically no cheese! The place has a nice old tavern vibe. The classic decor surely brings you back in time for sure. I got the classic Juicy Lucy with Amablu Bleu Cheese and the wife got The Saucy Sally. In the battle for the claim on the "Original Juicy Lucy", I figured why not try my first one at one of the more popular joints laying claim. Entering the restaurant, it just looked like classic Minnesota in there. Quaint log cabin feel with MN sports paraphernalia in every wall, I felt warmed up even on a summer day. Service was a challenge. While it was crowded, our server stopped to take our order once and that was it, no refills or check-ins. I'm a patient person, but when it is that popular of a place, seems like they should be more prepared. For an app I ordered another MN classic, Jojos, basically potato wedges covered in cheese, bacon, green onions, and sour cream. Unfortunately it took about 40 minutes to come out, and just barely before the burgers, so I would have just cancelled it. The Juicy Lucy was good, with that oozing center I was excited for. However the burger patty was a bit dry and under seasoned surprisingly. I originally ordered carrots rather than fries to offset the carby expected JoJos, but I couldn't get ahold of the waiter to get something to dip them in. They went largely uneaten as well. Wow. 2 days after Thanksgiving 2025, and I had to get something to eat besides turkey and leftovers. The wife suggested 5-8 Club since it was nearby. I concurred, seeing as I needed a change from the same old same old. We ended up ordering the GCB burger with raw onions and fries for her, and I ordered the Poppa Wings and a bowl of their chili. When I went to pick up the order, the usual mad pace on a Saturday was refreshingly slower, and I was actually able to park in the lot instead of the street. My order was waiting for me, and they honored a 50% off burger basket coupon as well. Thank you (a good tip was left)! When I got home to unpack the food, everything was piping hot, and the fries were still crispy. The GCB burger was twice the size it normally was, and the wings were huge! With that said, the prices have increased, but as I mentioned before, the food quality has also increased as well. Wow. Looks like we will be ordering 5-8 Club more frequently from now on. I usually go here for Juicy Lucies, and I highly recommend the Saucy Sally... but I have been craving a Reuben, and happened to be at 5-8, so decided to give it a try. I kid you not when I say this was the best Reuben I've ever had. The meat was tender, and pulled apart, not shaved or sliced. It was on grilled and buttered toast, with gobs of melted Swiss and the perfect amount of Swiss. I let my friends try small bites, and they agreed. Perfect in every way. The cheese curds were good and came with a delicious marinara. The saucy sally was yummy, loved the sauce. The gouda lucy was cooked well and had a nice cheese to meat ratio. All in all we enjoyed the juicy lucy. Not sure if I would go back specifically for a Juicy Lucy because everything was good. As a burger joint, 5-8 Club does a wonderful job offering quality burgers for an economical price, considering that their burgers are pretty big in size with an abundant amount of fries. I ordered two types of juicy lucy burgers and I thought they both tasted very good, and I would definitely return again if I am looking for good burgers. Cheese definitely started making a difference in determining both the texture and the taste, and the beef was cooked to perfection, with not only tons of juice but also a good amount of flavor, to the point of not needing any sauce at all, not even ketchup or mustard, which was very nice. I will say, though, that the burgers I have had are making me define this establishment as a top notch burger spot rather than specifically a juicy lucy place, mainly because I see a juicy lucy burger as a "one version" type of item, and since I have actually had cheese-stuffed burgers elsewhere in not only Minnesota but also the whole country, I am starting to question the uniqueness of the concept of "juicy lucy" and as of now, can only see 5-8 Club as a burger joint. Maybe it's because the influence of juicy lucy has impacted the country, though.
