This place was popping when we went last night. I would've loved to get a picture of the outside, but it was so busy I didn't get the chance. The staff were extremely nice and ready to help, but my biggest knock is that you have to crowd around the ice cream bar just to see the flavors. They're not posted anywhere in the store, so when it's packed, everyone's trying to peek at the case at the same time, making it hard to move around. The sign also says homemade ice cream, but when I asked one of the staff if they make it there, they said no. That said, the ice cream itself was delicious, and they offer a ton of unique flavors (which is even more reason they should display them somewhere). I got key lime pie, which had little pieces of pie crust in it definitely the star of the night with a scoop of peach on the bottom, which was also very good. My girlfriend got black cherry on top, which had tasty little chunks of chocolate (my second favorite out of the four flavors we tried), and red velvet on the bottom. read more

We went to this Matt's fairly late on Thursday for a treat. Matt's has ice cream, old fashioned hard and/or sour candies, and lots of chocolatey goodies, too. We ordered a hot fudge sundae and a single scoop of their Stellar Coffee ice cream. The hot fudge sundae was good, about exactly as you'd expect. The coffee ice cream was especially good -- plenty of coffee flavor and big swirls of sweet and slightly salty fudge. What really stood out about Matt's was the service! They were quite busy and only had one girl working there. That slowed down the process a little bit, but I was really impressed at how diligently she worked and how she maintained a positive, friendly, and helpful attitude. She never seemed to tire of providing samples, greeted everyone as they walked in, and thanked us for visiting after she rang us up. Definitely tourist-y. Ice cream isn't bad, and the building is adorably decorated with middle schooler's ice cream paintings. the counter was short staffed for the weekend, the line was long out the door at 10pm on Saturday. And for $6-8 for just 1 scoop in a bowl or waffle cone, 2 people adding up to $15-22... it's just very steep. Not unheard of for a touristy area, but quite expensive for what you get. read more

This locally owned ice cream shop is very popular in this area with 2 locations in Gulf Shores. With ice cream especially It usually comes down to individual tastes and preferences but this is Alabama ice cream, not grocery store ice cream, that's handmade and creamy. Since my original review, in addition to the ice creams, they now have chocolates, candies, and indoor seating which is a nice addition. I've heard that when they first opened that he was serving the stuff and that there was friendly and professional staff with clean vibrant stores. But as I previously reviewed it's still understaffed, one person on premises, and it apparently a little overwhelming because the ice cream buckets were low or empty and the wait can be longer than it could be. The prices are comparable to all the other ice cream/yogurt/desert places and quite frankly I think that even Baskin Robbins and Dairy Queen are pretty expensive around here. But when you setup shop in a resort/tourist location where rents are off the hook expensive and you no choice but to charge a premium just to keep the lights on. This is Matt's ice cream's second location. I was surprised to see it had a 2 Star review but it seemed many people gave it that review because of long wait times. We arrived around 5pm and there wasn't a wait. There was, however, only one employee and he ran around taking our orders and working the cash register very efficiently. Cute beachy ice cream parlor decor. I think there were twenty flavors of small batice cream, creamy and flavorful. The coffee kind was excellent! Prices are quite high for the portion size that comes in a dish, and they add 50 cents for a cake cone and of course more for a waffle cone. Hard to say anything about the service when buying ice cream in January. :) Nobody else was there when we walked in (a group of four), but two separate family groups came in after we did and were also served quickly. Warning for parents: They have candy jars and glass fronted shelves of cookie/candy treats in full view of small children. :) This location has a long ramp or lots of steps to climb.
