The food was decent but the service was horrible and I do mean horrible. No one greeted us. We seated ourselves. The chicken was still raw on the inside and it was just picked right up off the plate with a fork rather than taking the whole plate away. Every time we had a question we had to get up out of our seats to ask. When we were finished eating we had to get up and walk over to the counter to announce it and get containers. Nobody walked over to check on us throughout the time we were there. When we paid we were told there was no change and asked if it were ok that they owed us 57 cent. I still left a tip but I don't plan to return. As a matter of fact, we were trying this out b/c we wanted to get food catered for our Christmas Eve dinner. This place is amazing! The service is great & the food is even better. We got both the chicken yassa & the tilapia to share with jollof rice & yellow rice. Everything was delicious. Every bite of food was seasoned to perfection. The chicken was falling off the bone. It was stressful trying to comprehend how I've gone my whole life without this experience. Definitely new top 5 in the city. I got the red snapper, rice & plantains with bissap to drink. The fish was so good I kept going back and forth between eating it all there and trying to save some for later. Everything was so delicious I actually ended up picking out something else off the menu (the fish fataya, which also turned out to be bomb -- the hot sauce that comes with it is what takes it to the next level) to take home and try later on after I was finished eating. 100% recommend to anybody looking for amazing food that's a little different, but still gives you that comforting/familiar feel. read more

We literally had to leave... I had been looking forward to trying this place for forever and had it bookmarked for literally years. We were finally in the area and decided to try it for lunch on a weekday last week though! We walked in and tried to order, but every single item we ordered (4 or 5 different items) we were told they were sold out of. The menu is quite small, so there weren't a ton of other options. We really wanted to give this place a try though, so we both choose a backup item to order. Both were also sold out. I guess the only items they actually had were the ones that were over $15? So we gave up and decided to get food somewhere else, but we'd get drinks here because we felt bad just leaving. Nope, they literally did not have a single drink that we could order (we asked)! The leg was softer than the breast for obvious reasons but it was still pretty flavourful! The red Snapper was super delicious fried to perfection. Also the boabab juice was unique and very good!! I saw a video on Facebook about this place and because I'm dedicated to the foodie life I traveled out of state for this restaurant. It was all the way worth it. I'm not Senegalese but everything I had seemed not only authentic but made as if big momma was in the kitchen. The Yassa alone was so good!!! The lamb, the chicken, man everything. Decided to try something New and boy did we enjoy it. We split fish fataya, it comes with a spicy chilli onion sauce (we got some to go) lamb yassa and chicken skewers. Yum yum. My first time here I phoned in a carry out order for the 1/2 chicken yassa and decided to get a ginger juice while I was there. I pay for my food (16 and some change) and the owner ran out of singles and gave me more money instead of paying me in change and he didn't have to do that so that's another reason why I'm giving 5 stars because I can't think of any other restaurants that would do something like that so customer service was great on top of very friendly. Now the food, omg chicken was seasoned perfect and was so juicy I took a chuck out before I took the picture (i couldn't help it) yellow rice was good and so were the side of onion sauce. The ginger orange juice was so fresh you can taste the freshness of the ginger in it. I will try the fish next time because it was a debate on that or chicken and my fiance is picky and wanted to try so I went with chicken and he couldn't stop talking about how good it was and he would eat here and that's saying a lot because he is very picky. Great food, great customer service, reasonable prices so you can't ask for much else. I will probably fit this into my list of frequent places I'll visit. Just got done with lunch and it was an interesting experience. The interior had probably 6 tables small, not much to it. Had to use the restroom went to lift up the toilet seat it fell off. Then went to throw the paper towel away and the top of the trash can fell off. The place could use some TLC to say the least. Interior/Ambiance 1.5/5 Food ordered a Grilled Chicken with Onions. Had a good flavor it came with yellow rice, nice portion. Food 3.7/5 Service was fine people seemed nice but I was given a bottle of water when I sat down I didn't order it and was still charged $2.00 for it. Service 3/5 Value wasn't that great $20.00 with tip for lunch is fine if everything is awesome but it fell short of that. Value 2.5/5 So overall the place offers a unique flavor that you can't get many places it just has some shortcomings that I don't know if I could look past to try again. Maty's is an excellent restaurant for African (Senegalese) cuisine. It adds to the food diversity of Detroit, and for the city proper in particular. The restaurant is a small storefront location on Grand River near McNichols and nearby the Meijer shopping plaza. The menu is a large laminated card describing the dishes available. There are roughly 10 tables available for dine-in, though all dishes are available for carry-out. I tried the chicken dish, which had three chicken legs and a thigh, combined with yellow rice and an onion-based gravy. The dish was well prepared and tasty. The spices were distinct, but it was not "spicy hot", it was very enjoyable. The servers were responsive. I took a sip of a ginger juice, which was very nice, but I settled for a Diet Coke and water as my beverages. On my visit they had run out of other traditional soft drinks, I suspect that they would mostly include Coke products. Also on the menu are other Senegal-based juice drinks and smoothies. I love West African food and Maty's is authentic. I always order maffe (peanut butter stew with lamb). Ingredients: natural peanut, red wine, onion, garlic, bay leaf, mixed roots (like yuca, cassava, etc), butternut squash, peppers and a bunch of other amazing seasonings that only they can do right. They also have fataya which is like Senegalese empanadas with fish. Everything I've had so far is delicious. WARNING, I ate here a few months ago and the morning after became gravely ill. After a few days of a high grade fever, I was taken to the ER. A few days later, the tests they ran came back and showed I had typhoid fever. TYPHOID FEVER. You can't just get typhoid fever in a western country without gross negligence of hygiene from a carrier of typhoid, probably one of the cooks in this instance. This was the only restaurant we ate at the week before I became ill. The Michigan department of health has been in contact with me, since typhoid is so dangerous and rare in the west, and they are currently monitoring this restaurant for further outbreaks. PLEASE be warned, my pregnant wife ate with me (different meal luckily), and I don't want to think about what could've happened if our roles were reversed. read more

Last day of our week of #deliciousness and my husband stopped at Maty's in Detroit on his way home. We ordered the whole chicken (insanely good) and the whole fish (bass, also crazy good). Both came with a delicious mustardy, oniony sauce. We opted for the couscous and yellow rice for our sides and they were both great. I loved the texture of the rice, almost like sticky rice but with flavor and little veggie bits. This meal was insane. Can't wait for leftovers tomorrow.
