I now know what it was like to be deemed a heretic in 15th century Spain during the Inquisition, because eating at this place was very much like torture. Additionally, like the Spanish Inquisition, it just seemed to go on and on and on. My wife and I have passed by this place a number of times. It is always...every single night...packed. I joked to my wife that either the place must be absolutely amazing, or it was simply popular because people don't feel like driving far outside of the Clarksville neighborhood. I'm now about 923% positive that it's the latter. We get to the restaurant at about 6pm. As a customer of the liquor store next door, I was prepared for the parking lot to be completely FUBAR. Of course, it was. So we parked on the side of the street. At 6pm, the place was already starting to fill up, and we were quickly sat at our table. The table had a basket of chips, and the credit card slip holder/pen from that the server hadn't picked up after the last customer left. This credit card slip holder would become the 3rd party at our table for the entire dining experience at Maudie's. Our server (who was very nice...just want to get that out there right now) came up and gave us a bowl of delicious salsa (it is pretty good) and took our drink order: one mojito and one skinny margarita. Our drinks came about...fifteen minutes later? I should have gotten a beer. The mojito was pretty much some sort of sour mash that they dumped a bit of Bacardi in. I don't expect a fantastic mojito at a chain Mexican joint...but I don't expect pickle juice, either. My wife's drink was deemed to be "okay." So we ate some chips. And ate some chips. And ate more chips. We ate a lot of damned chips because our food (2 breakfast tacos for me, 2 breakfast tacos for her, a side of refried beans and a side of grilled potatoes) took nearly an hour to come out. During that time, we watched the place get more and more packed. We hadn't eaten the actual food yet. Sure, we'd had some good salsa and some guac that appeared to be made from avocados but tasted like...maybe...vanilla pudding without the vanilla or sugar taste? I don't know...how do you describe the taste of "nothing?" Anyhow, it was getting packed so though we were waiting, we were looking forward to it. And then it happened. Dinner was delivered. Imagine this: you've been on a desert island for a number of years, subsisting on sand fleas and the occasional dead jellyfish that had washed up on the shore. Suddenly a ship arrives! They have food! They invite you aboard, bathe you, tend to your wounds, give you fresh and clean clothes, and then present you with a dinner of broken glass and baby fetus. That's about what we felt like. The wife's tacos at least looked appetizing. They were, however, reportedly room temp...not even warm. After taking a bite of my refried beans, I was envious of her tacos. Having not grown up in Soviet Russia, I've never eaten cold beans before. But these were cold. Like...literally cold enough that they felt like they'd been put on ice. The "grilled" potatoes were undercooked, completely white, and greasy. My tacos were just above lukewarm. At this point, we were just through. We nibbled, asked for our check, and got it. Our waitress apologized for the long wait for food and thanked us for being patient. I've been a server. I get it. We give her a 20% tip, and make our way out and see that the line outside looks like the crowd at ACL in terms of size. I have no idea what those people were waiting there for. They do realize that this is Austin and that the city has no shortage of Tex-Mex, and Tex-Mex far superior to Maudie's, I would hope. In all honesty, this was our single visit to this place. We'd never been there before, and it was just terrible. Maybe we went on an off night? I'll never know, because between the cold and unappetizing food, the sour drinks, the horrendous wait for food, etc., I never plan on visiting Maudie's again. read more

Hey hey, Maudie's. I see you there, at a ridiculously inconvenient corner off of Lake Austin and 7th. In fact, I am almost certain that many an individual take fairly illegal turns in order to dig into their famous chile con queso--for good cause. This specific location has a limited amount of seating, but whatever. MC is the epitome of consistency. That phrase rhymes, so surely I can find a way to coin that. Everyone runs past the hustle and bustle only to sit in a long-anticipated wait. During the far-too-long-and-drawn-out anxiousness, you may choose to get an adult beverage, but nothing comes into fruition until you dig into their fairly tomato-laden salsa. Fajitas, tacos, and many an enchilada combination seem to be why individuals flock here. All are fairly solid, and they indeed boast much in the way of "healthier options"; see "non-hormonal chicken and pork" and yellow--yes, yellow, antioxidant-dense--bell peppers. Can you believe that something as simple as a pork taco will allow for that whole "feel-good" mentality? In Mexico, you would most likely toss your cookies after seeing how the pork is treated. Here, you are certainly paying a (very slight) premium for meat that would otherwise run you $1, along with a tortilla, to constitute a taco. From a cumulative perspective, Maudie's hits on all cylinders. It, by no means, allows you any room in dissing it. I used to eat here so often the waiters would ask if I would be having my usual (the spinach and mushroom enchiladas with double refried beans instead of rice and a frozen margarita no salt). Last week I stopped in after taking the Pup to Red Bud and decided to get the Skinny Sheryl's with spicy Ranchero Sauce on a whim because it was described "as fat free as Tex Mex gets" I got it to go and got home and realized that "fat free" meant no cheese. Tex Mex without cheese is no bueno. So I topped my "skinny" enchiladas with cheese and nuked them in the microwave. They were good and might have even been good without the cheese but I was not risking it. read more

I tell you what their quesadillas blancas: Jack cheese quesadillas with poblano strips and tomato on white corn tortillas are damn good. They are small and come in a quantity of 4 - the perfect amount of cheese and tortillas that anyone needs. They aren't too spicy, but are perfectly paired with guacamole, pico, and sour cream. The margaritas here are always a successful antidote after a long day or long night before, for that matter. The service is just as impressive as the food. Fast and super responsible. They never forget unique orders with specific requests. The first time to Maude's was quite the experience, as has every subsequent dining experience. The chips were thin fresh crispy and delicious. The sausa was just like most Texans like it , SPICY and the queso and guac were some of the best I have ever eaten. The cool thing about Maudies is I didn't expect 5 star service yet it tinkers right on the edge of attainment. whether it be the hostess who seats you, the Waiter who serves you or the busser/chip person, they all "chip " in to made the evening very comfortable. They are always very busy, which explains the expansion all around Austin. Of course when you put out a excellent product and combine that with excellent service and superior management,, the big 3's of the industry, then the word SUCCESS quickly follows. This review is strictly based on customer service (or lack there of)... I'm sure the food is ridiculously great, but I'm highly allergic to jalapeños so naturally, I asked for chicken enchiladas with no peppers. No problem... Except when I get them they're stuffed with peppers. Ok- no big deal. I flag down our SUPER social waiter (yes- that's sarcasm) - and just told him I couldn't eat them because of the peppers. His response is, "oh, the chicken is pre made with the peppers already".... Really? Why didn't you point that out when I specifically asked for NO PEPPERS. THEN-- instead of attempting to fix the situation, he's like, "so do you want something else?".... Well I guess not. I've lived in Austin for about 5 years now and never been to a Maudie's. i have no idea why, though maybe it's because there are a million tex-mex places and this one just kind of falls off my radar. I thought to myself "I have yet to go here, it's an Austin legend and it'd be something new to review for Yelp" so, i suggested it to my companion last night. We had a long wait, but that was to be expected. It was about 45 minutes worth of wait, but after two marguarita's we didn't really care. The interior was actually nicely decorated, I really liked the decor on the walls. Once we get seated, the waitstaff as friendly and prompt and we got our food pretty quickly, considering our waiter was taking care of a table of 13 next to ours - who were surprisingly very well behaved for being drunk college types. Ok, so the three stars is for the food. While they seems to make the best tortilla chips in town and their corn tortillas are some of the best I've ever tasted (so fresh!), my meal was bland, as was my companion's. I ordered the enchiladas perfecto - chile con carne sauce was very good, but the cheese inside reminded me of movie theater nacho cheese. The beans were very bland, as well. My friend's fajitas were said to be very blah, no real marinade on the chicken and just very "meh". It wasn't a bad meal, we ate all of it, but it really wasn't that awesome. i'd go here again if it was suggested, the overall experience was positive and the wait and barstaff were extremely good for a place like this, but the food is unremarkable to the point of "why?". read more

My girlfriend and I visited Austin last week, and I wanted to show her some of my favorite places to frequent when I lived there. One of those places was El Arroyo, so we decided to go there on Thursday night. However, when we arrived, I saw that something had happened. $1 margarita night had happened. The place was overrun with 18, er, "21" year-olds eager to get hammered on watered-down margs served out of a water cooler into plastic cups. The wait to get a table was two hours. The Ditch used to be so awesome. El Arroyo might as well change its name to Senor Tadpole's. Anyway, Maudie's to the rescue! My girlfriend is not a huge fan of margaritas, but she said that the blackberry mint margarita she had at Maudie's was the best she's ever had. She's even tried to recreate it at home since then. I had the Mexican martini and it was great, as always. My go-to dish at Maudie's is the Kentchiladas. I don't know who Kent is, but he's got great taste. It is two beef enchiladas with tomatillo sauce and a spicy chile con queso. The dish was incredibly flavorful and cheesy. It reminded me why Tex-Mex is so much better than Mexican food in California. While Maudie's still is below Chuy's and Trudy's on my list of favorite Tex-Mex places in Austin, it did move up to the number three spot after our great dinner there last week. read more

I just moved here from SanFrancisco and all my friends kept telling me was that the food in Austin was great and be ready for the best Mexican food and especially Maudies. Well having lived in Manhattan for 3 years and San Francisco for 4 years, I was not expecting much from the restaurant scene in Austin. Well when I arrived my friends whisk me to their favorite Mexican spot Maudies. As we drove up I started to get a bad feel as I saw it was in a strip mall. I began to have horrid flashbacks of a food poisening incident in a restaurant in Modesto that looked very similar. I was going to get passed this.. my friends loved it, it had to be decent. Before I get to the food, let me start with the clientel. I felt like I was in the middle of the suburbs and every person in there looked like they just came out the their cookie cutter yuppie neighborhood homes. This is not what I wanted to see..I thought I was in Dallas for a minute. Isn't Austin known for its eccletic, artsy cultured locals? You dont see them at Maudies. To the food. We started with the Queso Diablo which tasted to me like the cheese filling you cut out of a jalepeno popper from Chiles. It was runny and had the after taste of a pot that was not rinsed out after soap had been run through it. I had one bite of that stuff they called Queso. I ordered chix Enchiladas with a green chile sauce. It shoud have been called sponge wrapped in wet cardboard with a gallon of out of season watered down pulsed chiles on top. I hate to write a review like this about any restaurant as I was a chef for the last 10 years of my life. But Austin come on you have dozens of better Tex Mex restaurants than this. Any many many authenic family run Mexican resaurants in your city. Get out there and try new places. Stay away from West Austin and strip mall if you want true Austin Mexican. read more

Maudie's is a great weekend breakfast stop -- no shame coming in workout clothes, even if you're just coming off a run, you won't be the only one! Their chips are extra thin and crispy, and the salsa is just the right amount of spicy. We almost always split the Migas and while the Migas themselves aren't my favorite in town, their tortillas are much better than our other weekend standby (Magnolia Cafe) and that makes it a toss up as to which is my overall favorite. For some reason Maudie's fell off of my radar until the ROTD was posted today. Why I have not reviewed this place, I don't know. It is one of my favorite Tex-Mex spots ever. The chips, salsa and queso are just the beginning (and are all noteworthy) but don't fill up. You cannot pass up the chicken tacos al carbon. The meat is marinated perfectly and the heavenly taste will make you forget you are sitting two inches away from the next table. That is my favorite dish but I have heard raves about the enchiladas as well. Be prepared to wait, but sip those margaritas slowly or you will be too drunk to enjoy the tasty food. But if you'd rather learn about how some dude bought a breakfast joint and turned it into a Tex-Mex heaven, look no further. There's goodness to be found at Maudie's in all it's ooey-gooeyness. I love their queso. I swear there is garlic in it. But it's probably just Doug Sahm's sweat. And their Tex-Mex Chile Sauce goes well on practically anything from Burritos to Enchiladas. Reference the Rockin Ruthann's Burrito. It's got BOTH the Chile AND the Queso going at the same time. And it tastes twice as good the next day. You've heard me say that about the South Lamar location. Or something like that. TERRIBLE!!! Are you kidding me? For starters, there's no margarita menu. They offer you one special, and if it's not your ideal, you have to make up some random speculations in the hope of getting a decent drink. I think I ended up with a mango/guava swirl, but who knows! My hubby tells me that this is somewhat of an Austin institution and that people are loyal to it. This would explain how this place manages to stay in business. In my opinion they are about 1.5 steps up from Taco Cabana, which I think is completely yuck. I had the enchiladas based on other reviewers. Give me a break! This is what you think is good? They were mediocre at best. Chuy's is so much better. The beans that I get in bulk at costco tasted better than the refried beans on my plate. My friend's fajitas were slightly better, but came with the grossest, fake guacamole. I can cook much better at home. The only saving grace is that I really liked the chips and salsa. Maudie's Cafe is a place that will not disappoint. You can honestly debate who has the best Tex-Mex but in my opinion this is easily top 3 in my book. They make old school Tex-Mex but the atmosphere is more up to date. Here's a little secret if you want the most bang for your buck, oder the beef fajita side order and tortilla side order and boraccho beans as a side order. If you don't want to pay a ton more just so you can add cheese to your fajitas then do this and you'll be plenty filled up and it's super cheap. You can get all of that for LESS than simply ordering the two fajitas beef tacos. If I am not in the mood for beef I simply order their cheese enchilada's which are seriously tough to beat. Service is garbage, especially if you are sat on the back side. The food is not as good as I recall it being. That being said, not everything is rubbish. This place got famous for it's Migas and its connections to Anne Richards. Thankfully, the migas are still good. The Migas taco is a good take on this as well, I would recommend getting it with extra serranos. For queso, walk down the road to Magnolia. When my hubby and I were out house shopping, we kept reading "Walking distance to Maudie's!" in most real estate booklets. The realtors obviously thought this was a more important bit of information to mention than the crime rate, so we were intrigued. Well, we finally decided on a house a few blocks north and were excited that we would finally be "Walking distance to Maudie's!" (echo) We just knew we'd be the envy of all our friends because we were living in Maudie's hood. How we looked forward to saying, "Our new house is like sooo walking distance to Maudie's!" Anyway, we finally went there with the friends we were trying to impress, and well, let's just say their 6 and 4 year old didn't even like the rice and beans. "They're kids," you say. "They'll eat Cheerios they find in their belly button!" Oh, no. Not these super kiddos. These are the special kind of kids that have working taste buds and can detect poopy tasting food. Now my husband and I are embarrassed. That joke was on us. But we didn't give up. There was no way were gonna let this one bad experience make us regret our new purchase. It's not like we could return the house, you know? So we tried again...and it failed again. We've written it off, and are happier with the liquor store next door. Maybe that's the secret. Hit the liquor store first, then head to Maudie's. Shoot, why didn't we think about that earlier? Oh, and what's with the chairs? How Ikea are they? Cheap, super noisy and flimsy. Bleh. I had heard good things about the Maudie's chain and was excited to try it out. I love good tex-mex food and unfortunately this place disappointed. I could've gone to Chevys and had the same food experience (though Maudie's is probably cheaper than chevys so that's a point for Maudies). The food wasn't anything special, it didn't stand out and tasted medicore and I felt like everything was overly smothered in sauce (I had enchiladas and tamales). I didn't even like the chips and salsa they served - bleh. I could probably find better tex-mex in California! Maudie's delivers a great experience and is one of the best values for great Mexican food in Austin. The food is really good and even better when you factor in the affordable prices - which are significant less than some of other good Mexican food in town (Matt's, Santa Rita). A dinner at Maudie's with drinks, queso and main course is generally under $20 a person, which is rare these days at a good restaurant. Another advantage to Maudie's is even without reservations, you will get seated fairly quickly. I've waited 1.5 hours at Hula Hut and an hour plus at Santa Rita & Matt's during busy times, but never that long at Maudie's. We went with a group of 12 to Lake Austin location on Friday night at 7:30pm - and even with a packed restaurant we were all seated in under 30 minutes. Best thing at Maudies might be their frozen margarita. They also have great salsa, although its hot. Maudies queso is solid, but sometimes has a strong garlic taste. I recommend trying the chicken fajita tacos or the regular dinner. Both under $8 and they deliver the goods. Best time to try Maudie's: Friday or Saturday night for ritas with friends. read more

Maudie's address can be misleading. Although technically they're located on W. 7th Street, the easiest way to get there is via Lake Austin Blvd. From downtown, follow 6th street west until you've gone under Mopac. The road becomes Lake Austin Blvd. They're less than a mile or so past RunTex on the right. From Mopac, take the Lake Austin Blvd. exit. About a mile west on your right. Now that we have that out of the way, on to the more important things in life. Food. Maudie's Mexican fare is excellent. I always judge a Mexican food joint by how they present their tortillas. I know this seems stupid (and maybe wholly inaccurate), but when they deliver my fajita tortillas in tightly wrapped foil, I know I'm in for a true Mexican treat. Yes, Maudie's has amazingly strong margaritas. They also have fabulous chips and salsa, queso, beans, rice and as Corinne says, "Their veggies aren't mushy." Corinne judges a restaurant on whether its veggies are crisp or limp. The prices are moderate. It's not as cheap as El Chilito's breakfast tacos or splitting fajitas at Chuy's, but it won't break the bank. Three Cheers for Maudies. read more

Maudie's is a little hit-or-miss for me. I could eat a gallon of their queso (probably in one sitting), and sometimes I'll get a dish that just has a little yum-garlic-icious zing to it that makes me happy. Then sometimes I'll get something and it'll be downright meh - like the chipotle shrimp-stuffed avocado I got yesterday, which just seemed mushy and kind of gross to me. Plus, I agree with Alex L. - their salsa tastes too tomato-saucey. In some ways, this is a good thing, as I have a bad tendency to eat my weight in chips and salsa before my meal comes if it's really good - here, the mediocre salsa allows me to actually exercise a little restraint. I've always enjoyed coming to this Maudies- even when it was nothing but a tiny room with pictures of Elvis hanging from every wall. Ever since taking over the old laundromat next door, they've really changed up their atmosphere into something much more modern... and even thought I'm not a huge fan of the decor, I do still enjoy the food. The location itself is great. The parking situation- not so much. During peak times, expect a wait to find parking (or park in the neighborhood if you're impatient) and then expect a wait to be seated. However, you can find times when it is particularly dead. Typically, Friday-Sunday nights are not applicable and yes, you will wait. Other than all that, the place is pretty spacious. You have a choice of indoor or outdoor seating. Inside, there are some crazy liquor bottles embedded in the walls as light fixtures that glow different colors. The food? Of course you get the complimentary chips and salsa. The drinks are all right- not super fabulous. The American fare is surprisingly good (especially if you're not feeling Tex-Mex but your friends are). I've had they're enchiladas and they're about what you'd expect. My favorite stuff to order, though, is their breakfast. I've had many of their breakfast tacos and they are all yummy. Sometimes we'll call in our order on a Saturday morning- and then have whoeever drew the short straw drive over and pick them up. You might say a taco is a taco, but the salsa is what really makes the taco. Speaking of breakfast, they're not too bad for dining in for a morning treat. The chilaquiles are one of my favorite things and sometimes I feel it is worth it to order it at dinner. But then again, that's something else that kind of bugs me - breakfast items have a surcharge after like 4pm or something. Being an absolute breakfast lover, this wounds my heart ever so slightly, but at least sometimes it can be worth the extra dough. So all things considered, I do really like this place and what it has become. We typically bring family and visitors here who want Tex-Mex. Somehow this place, which has recently expanded, has managed to make inefficient use of their interior space and resorted to throwing tables out in the parking lot and call that patio dining. I still kinda like the food here, the strait plate is nice mixup and the fajitas are generous; however, that's about it. The service has been pretty horrendous, flies and crows are everywhere on the patio, they are stingy with the tortillas, it takes a miracle to get a drink refill, and the tv's are awfully positioned. Its somewhere between El Arroyo and Enchiladas y Mas; I'd give them a big fat zero, but the Strait plate deserves one, and the skirt in there today gives 'em another! read more

So, my Austin cousins said that this place was an institution and we had to eat there when we came to visit. When it comes to mexican, I am much more of a devotee of Baja-style cuisine than TexMex, but hey, when in Rome... Loved it. Divey ambiance, check. Zingy salsa, check. Perfect fajitas, check. Attentive, if somewhat harried, server, check. Our large group was served reasonably quickly, drinks were refilled promptly, and the one cousin on a special diet had her oddball requests answered cheerfully. i prefer maudie's milagro in westlake over maudie's cafe for the scenery, but if you're hungry either one will do. the food's the same, the prices are the same. the cafe is lower key and a place to take your family or a mistress if you're trying to avoid the wife. note: the cafe is no place to take someone if you're trying to impress them. for that, go to maudie's milagro in davenport village (westlake). it's great for dates, birthday parties, family dinners, happy hour, etc. and now, the food. be careful when ordering, the chips and salsa are addicting and you'll probably go through at least one basket before your meal gets there. my absolute favorite dish is the strait plate. 3 beef enchiladas topped chile con carne then baked and covered with 2 eggs any way you want (but of course the correct way to eat this is sunny side up). $8.95. there's no need to ever order another item off the menu. read more

I've only eaten at Maudie's really late at night, which is a great time to visit. Maudie's is consistently crowded but the wait is always bearable. The food is top-notch (breakfast burritos, enchiladas, you name it) and the queso and margaritas are "must haves." The wait staff is one of the better ones in Austin as they are attentive and actually seem concerned about making your Maudie's experience a good one. Parking can be a bit of a bear, but there are plenty of nearby spots where you can leave your car and safely walk to Maudie's. My favorite 'mitigating factor' about Maudie's is that the location is easy to get to from most anywhere in town since it's essentially just off the corner of 6th and Mopac. Enjoy! read more

I've been coming to Maudie's since Chris and his partners converted the old diner into the Tex-Mex place we know and love today - and it was less than half the size it is now. Dinner last night was one of my new favorites, the chipotle chicken enchiladas, with grilled chicken. read more

One of the best tex-mex menus in Austin, hands down. Each location attracts a diverse demographic of patrons but the food is consistently delicious. For breakfast, Pete's Tantalizing Tacos are super cheap and quite tasty. Cheese enchiladas for lunch/dinner can't miss. Summertime specials are often worth a look as well! read more
