I don't like to ride horses, but I was convinced by my own instincts to make this a special trip…read morefor my daughter and visiting friends, so I swallowed my fears and agreed to go. I am glad I did. This is a family-owned and locally-owned working ranch. Mr. Thompson was kind and explained during the five minute instructional period which end of the horse was the front end and which was the back end. :) He also offered helmets, which we declined. The trail rides are only a part of his ranch businesses, so the tour is less touristy and more cruising. There was minimal talking on the trail and that actually allowed me to enjoy the scenery more. The bi-coastal views were breathtaking as we rode their well-trained, stable and calm horses up a very rocky and steep trail to a private cabin. We were surrounded by a crown of clouds and the cool air helped us to enjoy the ride even more. I didn't need a jacket at all. The cabin had an overgrown garden, bottled water, packaged treats and the chance to use a flush toilet (yay! so precious!). We sat for a little while, resting our (my) weary knees. The first half of the ride was about a half hour. We enjoyed Mr. Thompson's gentle humor and his description of how he takes care of his land and his animals. He has cattle, goats alongside wild deer on his pastures. The second half of the ride to return to our starting point was about the same amount of time and a bit more gentle, as the horses didn't follow the same steep, hilly trail. Those horses know where they want to go. My horse had her own mind about things. She didn't quite follow the same trail but she chose her steps carefully around the deep holes and slick rocks. She might have suspected she had an anxious rider. I think I bored her. She kept huffing and stopping to eat more often than the other horses did, I felt. She also passed a lot of gas which compelled me to say, "excuse me", every time. We had a choice between this idea and a sunset ride in Makena and I am glad we chose this one instead. The bi-coastal views are unique to Maui and the cool air upcountry helped use to enjoy what may have been a very hot ride. Sunset rides or beach rides can be had anywhere else easily; these upcountry views of Maui's landscape are difficult to find anywhere else. If you take a photo with that view in the background, whoever sees it will say, "That's Maui!"

We have taken three of their "Morning Walks" with our grandkids and it's a perfect introduction to hiking. Honestly we've had three different ...wonderful.. experiences. It's not strenuous and you're taken back to some private land that you'd not have access to if you just drove up and parked (if you found a parking spot) and hiked back in. We were lucky to have the lovely, fun, and knowledgeable guide named Randolyn ..aka Ran. She was the perfect blend of kind, patient and engaging with the grandkids, and very helpful with us old folks! On the drive on the way home she advised a few newbies to the island where some great places to eat were... they greatly appreciated her ideas! She had the most pleasant demeanor.... :) If you want a fun morning walk, call Hike Maui

Brian was just soo fun, and soo informative. He balanced all our interests absolutely wonderfully, it was just amazing. The kid was thrilled with the his dino costume (Oh my god! the costume, he wore it on the Entire trip except when jumping off the rocks ofcourse), the adult in the other group with all the geological tectonics knowledge that flowed like an uninterrupted volcano from his mouth...non stop, and me with all the native plant life info. The Hala tree amazed me and so did the big red flower- torch ginger, which actually looks like a vibrant staff fit for a king. I would never have learnt about them in detail if not for this trip. All this besides the actual trip to the waterfalls, the encouragement he gave to the other group was astounding (I don't swim myself unfortunately, or the fun would have tripled for me). He supported, guided, advised, and made them have the time of their life with the diving and the swimming. Three cheers to the B.Rex. Hike Maui site itself had useful info for the walk and I brought the water shoes after reading about it on their site, it really worked great out there. Pick up was right on time and the directions were pretty clear, but u could have mentioned near Kahului Park and Ride, I mistook the 8 min drive for 8 min walk, and walked up from my hotel ! Hike Maui arranged for backpacks and that was very useful too. To just it throw it on our shoulders and walk freely. The little snacks were good after the walk. The best part was the passion fruit which was handed out as a parting gift. It was my first time to eat that fruit too. Note: The waterfalls are accessible privately with rental car too. You could explore the area in your own sweet time. But I did notice there were not many signs with specific directions inside the forest. And no labels on the plants. Most places no mobile signals either. That said, you could do it on your own. I cannot say enough about this trip. It is for all ages and a great little Maui to explore comfortably. PS: Hope Brian wins the Halloween costume contest today ( 31st Oct 2025)

She has a big heart and a crazy love for this island. We've lived on Maui for a couple years and she taught us some cool stuff that we didn't know. We hopped in her big van and had a fun tour to: -Ocean Vodka -Surfing Goat Dairy -Ali'i Lavander Farm -Ulupalaku Ranch + Maui wine And along the way she handed out fresh banana bread (that SHE baked!) and cold bottles of water (say what? So thoughtful!) As we drove, she would point out things like: the kinds of trees we were seeing, the history of this or that, how things had changed over the years... Interesting things that kept the conversation flowing. Her van has a microphone for her to use so it's great for people who sit in the back. We could hear everything she was saying. She made sure to open doors for guests and make sure the temperature inside the van was okay for everyone. There are different tours to choose from to hone in on where you want to go and what you want to see. She really knows her stuff and made us smile and laugh with her bubbly personality and energy. She caters to her guests and made us feel like her 'ohana. Thank you so much Marilyn! We had so much fun.

Prior to the pick up, Marilyn was always available via phone if I had questions about planning the logisitics and I found her to be very sweet and kind over the phone. As soon as Marilyn greeted me at the pick up, I knew I was in for a real treat. She has this magnetic energy and passion. She knows how to connect with people and make them feel comfortable. I was traveling alone and joined a group of others wonderful tourists that were part of the tour. Marilyn and Robbie were well versed in their knowledge of the history of the culture, agriculture and plants. The tour included stops at the lovely Lavender garden, Maui winery, and the Surfing Goat Dairy. Their timing was spot. One of the highlights of the tour was the lunch. It was in a lovely park, tucked away in a hillside, overlooking Maui, It was a perfect day. The real treat was when Marilyn pulled out her Ukulele and started singing lovely songs - one of which was "Somewhere over the rainbow". It was delightful. The tour ended with the other tourists departing at the airport. This was not just an ordinary curbside drop-off. Marilyn actually accompanied them to the check in counter and helped them get their bags through. This is not something that an ordinary tour company would do. I remained in the van and chatted with the delightful Robbie. I cannot thank Maui Country Farm Tours for such a memorable experience. It was truly one of the highlights of my trip, and I could not have done the trip alone. Marilyn has contacts and knows the inside scoop on how these various businesses operate. Please consider her tour as an option for you to see the back country of beautiful Maui. You will thank yourself and you will make a friend or two.
