It was…read morereally awesome to learn how their mango farm works -- as someone interested in gardening, and especially curious about exploring the "food forest" permaculture side of growing food, it was really educational. She taught us the different plant groups that feed each other, and what order to plant to get the most productivity (and safety! We learned that papaya makes a good windbreak for smaller and more delicate plants, and agave makes a good firebreak!). I wish I lived in Maui because I'd be planting mangoes, papayas, bananas, coffee, and cocoa, RIGHT away. It was wild finding out how fast and tall papaya trees grow! These plants don't grow well in Seattle, but we are still going to take what we learned and see how we can apply similar features for our own food forest. I appreciated the very real perspectives about what works - as well as pitfalls and challenges with their food forest / mango farm. The tour was really interesting and fun, and we even had a resident cat named Tyson who took the tour with us! SO CUTE! The view there was beautiful, and though our tour group was tiny, I could see this being a fun activity for kids and families, too. Enough safe space for little folx to run around safely, and so much is stackable. She let us try mango (and wild mangos), ice cream beans (what an experience!), fresh coffee, and more. So good! They said they are going to do dinner parties here and I look forward to coming back to the Maui mango farm when we visit next time. Hopefully we'll have some good photos to show off of the garden upgrades that they've inspired. We really wanted to do something to support the Lahaina community (without being a disaster tourist, either), so visiting a regenerative farm seemed like an awesome choice, and I'm very glad we went. We were greeted by a very nice couple and served a very refreshing glass of lemongrass and cardamom leaf tea to start to hear about regenerative farming. It was invigorating and soothing at the same time. It was especially helpful for me to get over the mild cold during this trip. The walk was very easy and informative and we wore tennis shoes but it could have been easily done with flip flops or sandals. At the end, we were served delicious box of star fruit, papaya, and different mango samples . Also, we were given some recommendations on good local eats, cafes, and bakeries and some or then we spent time ourselves to find!! Not much walking-- the most is from the entrance/cafe area to the field with an outlook, where you learn about how the Dole family rekt Lanai's natural environment to farm pineapples (kinda evil). Frankly, the history behind mass agriculture and farming is pretty bleak-- you can't help but feel a sense of injustice for the native Hawaiians. From thereafter, you're sitting under an overhang while listening to your tour guide explain the stages of coconut growth & trying the different pieces. We tried: - Coconut water - Coconut jelly - Coconut meat - Coconut shavings ... All from coconuts of varying ages, getting the chance to see how each tastes different from the other. Kai even popped by with a surprise: fresh palm hearts! My bf and I frequently use canned ones for salads-- the raw flavor blew our minds. The entire "tour" took around 1.5 hours. The cafe in front is charming, lovely drink & food offerings alongside a gift shop. You can tell that the staff here actually care about the history of Hawaii and respect the island.

Jeremy was the highlight of the tour teaching us so much about the benefits of coconuts. We tried young coconut water to more mature coconut water. We got to taste coconut meat and shavings of coconuts (it was a great moisturizer for the skin too) I'd highly recommend this tour and the cafe! Cute little place. She was so excited as she had never seen an alpaca in real life before, and suddenly she was hands on feeding babies and moms!! She was soooo excited! So, many thanks to Padma who made our experience so special, and Sassy Girl, Lola and the other alpaca friends we made, and Snow White the bunny and her fluffy pals too. Padma showed us how to refine the fleece and spin it and we had a go at carding too, and she answered all my questions with ease. It was fascinating to find out more about alpaca....did you know they only give birth during the day, usually in the morning ? Easy to book online, especially with Kamaaina rates being honored, easy to find even though you are venturing into someone's driveway, park and walk a few steps to the alpaca so good for children and elderly/disabled, a small gift shop selling beautiful gifts is right there, compact, cute and incredibly fun. Perfect birthday present for a 10 yr old girl ;)

Admission is $10 for visitors (which may be expensive unless you love plants), and thankfully free for kama'aina. It's not a large area, but it's filled with Hawaiian native plants. Many of them aren't the palm trees and plumeria you'd be expecting; these are the real ones, mostly hearty scrub type plants, plus many varieties of taro, breadfruit, and other staples. They had a nice variety of flowers. Parts of the garden are very sunny and hot, so dress accordingly. There are also shaded areas under trees and pavilions. They also have a clean restroom. It's worth a visit if you're a fan of flora and Hawaiian culture.

It's collection started in the 1970s and once was a site for a zoo (which closed in 1997). Our party of four spent an early afternoon here, taking an Uber (got unlucky and hit surge pricing of $35) from a takeout lunch spot. The caretaker (who took our admission price of $10 per non-resident) was super nice, explaining how there is an app that one can download and can then use without internet to hear audio commentary on many of the plants in the collection. There is a modern bathroom building in the same area, along with a place to refill your water bottles. One can probably walk through the entire garden in about an hour if going fast, 2 hours if taking one's time and reading/listening. There are plenty of shaded places to sit, and because it wasn't too crowded, we never felt hurried. My favorite places were where they had the agricultural plants like taro, sweet potato, banana, and sugar cane (many varieties). They also had a small grove of coconut trees, cordoned off to prevent unfortunate accidents from falling ripe coconuts. They did have some flowering plants, including a hibiscus. But you wouldn't come here for that; instead its to learn about the plants native to Hawaii and pick up a bit of history along the way.

It's a peaceful place to find your zen and it's perfect for keeping the kids entertained. The staff always make us feel like we're visiting old friends. Bo at the coffee counter is always friendly, makes a great cup of coffee and is always up for a great conversation. Brittany, the owner, is incredibly welcoming and accommodating and truly makes everyone feel at home. If you're looking for something different than just another beach day, come up here and enjoy the cool Upcountry breeze, beautiful scenery, and peaceful atmosphere. While you're in the area, you can also visit the nearby strawberry farm and goat farm, making it a fun day exploring another side of Maui. Every time we visit Maui, we make it a point to stop here a couple of times. One day we'll make it back for one of their special dinners - we just need to find a babysitter first! We attended the 1st Makawao Night Market on Friday July14th and I'm so glad we got to go. We…read morearrived at 5:15 pm and the place was packed. We drove into the parking grass area of the arena parking and paid an admission fee of 5.00 per car. We have handicap parking so we parked close to the entrance, perfect! We walked in and was amazed by the st up that they had. Everything was set up with vendors and food trucks. They had many of things to purchase. To many cute things. We knew that Waiwaiolani were there so we decided to hit them up before they sell out of some cute stuff. Boy did she have a line at the clubhouse. But the line moved pretty fast. As to where we bought so many cute things. I think everyone was happy that upcountry had this event going on. It was nice to see many people there spending they're money with smiling faces on. I was very happy with the person who put this event on she did an amazing job! We can't wait for the next one to happen in August. If you're ever in the Makawao area head up on Olinda Road to the Oskie Rice Arena they just might have an event going on. Remember ladies bring your cowgirl boots so your feet doesn't get dirty(hint hint you're not actually in the Arena, just from the grass. We went to support our extended Paniolo Ohana from Maui. The vendors came through with Amazing products for purchasing & The array of foods were just what this rodeo brought in. We were excited to see one of the food trucks made Pupu style foods like lomi O'io raw fish & pulehu smoked tako mix with limu. So many varieties to choose from. The Bull bash has always been one of our favorite things to watch at the rodeo & Especially our Na keiki O Maui paniolo's riding them sheep's. Just Amazingly Fun! ;)
