The longtime keeper of the Maui Fish Pond is Uncle Kimokeo, he is a life long Maui resident who has dedicated himself to preserving the Fish Pond for future generations. You see the Fish Pond was built in the 1600's to create a safe haven for the local fish to spawn and grow. Uncle Kimokeo has maintained the Fish Pond walls using stone high atop Haleakala rebuilding the wall stone by stone. Uncle Kimokeo says he's is entrusted to preserve the Pond and the culture. To listen to him explain all the cultural lore was amazing. He took us out on a Double hull Canoe north and basically had the whole boats singing and chanting Hawaiian songs giving thanks for the permission on the water. The Maui Fish Pond takes out groups daily by appointment for a donation 69.00, consider your donation as a write off as the foundation is a non profit corp. these monies supports all of the upkeep, programs and Youth programs the foundations supports. Contact the Maui Fish Pond association and give back to your local hosts. This was an awesome way to emerge myself in the community. Good means that there is more room to move around. Your not having people trying to squeeze behind you or fighting for space cause there is 15 women fighting over the kids clothes while all you want to get to is the last three piles of mens clothing and it's right beside the kids clothes. This is a big improvement. The move to the new location unfortunately took away one of the best things about this thrift store that was never replicated at other places: Early Morning Cheap Junk for Pennies on the Dollar. Now, given the surrounding area, Upcountry is Farm/Ranch Land, and these areas means that there is a garage or barn or shed with old junk in it. And once in a while, people will clean it out, and sometimes will "unceremoniously" dump it at St Joseph. The ladies there would have to sort out the good from the bad, and I guess to maximize the effort, would price anything that was sellable outside before the place opened at 8AM. And it was a real crapshoot and a surprise what got donated. Sometimes, you'd find a great deal, other times you'd find something fixable,or broken items that you could utilize for other uses. Depending on what was there, I would walk off with anywhere from $1.00 to $40 of stuff before the doors opened. I guess now with the move, they can't continue with this practice, and anything that could be saved even though it's junk is sent straight to the dumpster. Mixed on this.

We had plenty of time & interactions with the goats, cats, pigs, guinea pigs, chickens, roosters & guinea pigs. She helped us to know them as individuals where we saw their little & big personalities. For instance, Matthew, the Turkey, is super cuddly & likes hugs. Henry, the tuxedo cat, also likes to be carried. The property is lovely, a true paradise with blooming plants. She takes volunteers on some days each week, but the admission fee was well worth the time & the cause. This is a great spot for all ages to visit. We stopped at Paia on the way there & back too, so pick up a snack or some kitschy or artsy store time on the way.

There are lots of farm animals in addition to Guinea pigs and cats. It seems the only life mission of the cats is to greet and love the visitors. There are several large tortoises and they love to be brushed! I had no idea they have so much feeling in their shells. They will even fall asleep during brushing! The animals are very cuddly, and even the turkey loves to be held. This visit may be the highlight of my year, and I am fortunate to have many highlights. Laurelee is a treasure.
