Our visit to Maui has been amazing minus our experience at Maui Wine. My husband and I were very excited to try Maui Wine as we are huge wine connoisseurs. We live in the heart of wine country of Sonoma County and were excited to try the famous pineapple wine. We had the reserve red flight and the pineapple whites flight our sommelier summer was okay not great there was nothing spectacular about her service. she brought all our wines at the same time pointed to the description of them and named off the reds. We have been to numerous wineries and have never been treated the way we were treated there. On our way out we decided to purchase the Maui Splash and guava jam. As we were checking out the woman ringing us up ( tall blonde) didn't get her name asked us very rudely " did you guys leave cash on the table for summer?" I was so caught off guard I said " no no we did not" and stared at her in disbelief she had a hold of my receipt and the asked if summer did anything wrong? I said no I do not have cash and I am buying a bottle & jam which after I should have gone back to return and she said " oh okay sooo you can put a tip on your card" I was so upset as again I stated summer did her job in providing us the bare minimum service and this tasting was nothing like I have had in the past where there is actual description of the wine how and where it is produced, description of the Tastes,aromatics, colors etc .. my husband then intervened and signed the credit card leaving a $5 dollar gratuity that we were basically aggressively forced to give. This is a poor representation of a business and customer service. Gratuity is not mandatory nor expected and to have a person confront you in this aggressive manner is not okay! Cute place!! Stopped in on our way to Hana via the 'other' route. Pi'ilani Hwy gets pretty crazy after this point if you are headed East ish, so beware, don't drink a lot and then except not to get sick esp if you have motion sickness haha. There were bikers here, and that made me love this place even more. The wine itself was kinda meh, but the novelty is you are drinking wine with Hawaiian bikers on an inactive volcano. So yea. There's that. Also they had kitties wandering around and my BF gets bored easily and doesn't drink so they provided entertainment for him A+++ would come again! read more

I've visited wineries in Temecula and the Santa Ynez Valley and I enjoy a glass of wine almost daily, so to me, this winery had some big shoes to fill. As a new resident to Maui I needed our one winery to be the bomb.com, I was not disappointed! First, the drive upcountry is an experience in itself. Beautiful scenery, beautiful views. Winding roads force you to slow dow a little and enjoy the trip. The grounds at Tedeschi Vineyards are equally majestic. I would highly recommend attending the free tour as they will tell you about the stunning trees on the property, and a history lesson about the Captain that once owned the land and entertained the King here. Very, very neat. There are bathrooms towards the back, and a general store and lunch spot right across the street (Where the food is awesome as well!). They offer complimentary wine tasting to all guests (21+). You can choose from three wines. The tasting bar is rather small and we waited a few minutes for our turn. They weren't tasting a couple of their wines due to low volume. They do offer a variety of discounts on bottle purchases if you find something you like- kamaaina, discounts on cases, and some end of season bottles specially priced to sell. Id definitely come back and pay for the more in-depth wine tasting experience that they offer. But overall, our complimentary wine tasting and tour was an excellent experience and a great way to spend an afternoon. read more

Upcountry Maui is the beautiful, perfect backdrop for Maui Wine. We have visited multiple times for tastings and have always enjoyed the atmosphere and service. Maui Wine has a great kama'aina discount, which is a plus! Recently, we booked a tour that included a tasting in the Old Jail. Ally was our guide, and her passion for winemaking and expertise was evident. Our group learned so much and enjoyed sampling several bottles along with a delicious charcuterie platter. Maui is full of amazing life experiences. The two most popular journeys are along the road to Hana and the Haleakala crater. A less popular journey, but well worth your time, is the journey through upcountry Maui to Maui Wine. This journey will take you on a drive through the country side on the south facing slopes of Haleakala between 1,700 and 1,8500 feet. So bring a coat, as the temperatures are a bit cooler here. Visiting the winery brings you closer to the historic agricultural culture of Maui. The 23 acre vineyard is located on the historic Ulupalakua Ranch which still operates today. You can visit the ranch store and café across the street from the tasting room. The winery started in the 1970's and while the owners waited for the vineyard to develop they decided to experiment with making wine from Maui pineapples. When the pineapple business went under, the winery bought the pineapple plantations and started Maui Gold. Which grows pineapples today. The pineapple wine was so popular that it remains the flagship wine of Maui Wine. The tasting room itself is located in the King's cottage which once was the mountain retreat for King Kalakaua of Hawaii and his Queen Kapiolani. On their 23 acres they grow syrah, Malbec, Grenache, viognier, chenin blanc, and gewürztraminer grapes. The Syrah is the most popular. The tasting room provides complimentary tours and tastings. The tours take place 3 times a day at 10:30am, 1:30pm, and 3:30pm. The tasting room highlights the beautiful wines of Maui Wine. It is simple and inviting. We were greeted warmly during our visit, and provided with a tasting menu. Maui Wines has three different categories of wines you can taste, the Pineapple Wine, Estate Wine, and Rose Ranch wines (sparkling & sweet). They make three different types of Pineapple wine: sparkling, off dry, and sweet. I was surprised by how crisp and flavorful the off dry Maui Blanc was. It paired very well with my Christmas ham this year. There wasn't anything we tasted that we didn't like. The standouts for me were the Maui Blanc, and the sparkling rose (awesome label that creates a 3d image when wet). Their Syrah was also OK, as well as the sweet Framboise dessert wine. The Maui Blanc though is like nothing I have had before, and very special. All my holiday guests were delightfully surprised by it. The tour is worth taking. You get to learn more about the monthly production process of the Pineapple wine and their other varietals. The staff are incredibly informative and passionate about their work. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit, and would highly recommend it to anyone. They don't serve food onsite. Just the tastings and bottles to purchase that you can take away. We spotted the sign for Maui Wine while we were on the way back from hiking near Hana, but it was late in the day. So we added it to our list for things to do later in the trip, "if we get around to it." I'll call that a mistake only because it should have been at the top of the list earlier in the trip. We headed back to "upcountry" Maui a couple of days later to see what they had to offer. Answer: great wine, great service, great atmosphere. For the wine tasting fan, there are two tasting flights. The tropical flight trends toward sweet and fruity. The diverse flight dabbles in tropical fruit, but also draws from estate reds and sparkling whites. If the word "terroir" rolls off your tongue, I'd recommend skipping the tasting and just buy a glass (or three, depending on whether you're the driver) of the "GSMV." It's Maui Wine's estate red. If GSMV makes you raise an eyebrow, that's okay. The search engine tells me that it stands for Grenache, Syrah, Malbec, Viognier. From what we learned from the awesome staff (see below), these reds are grown at their vineyards down the road. While we had no complaints about the whites and the pineapple wines found on their tasting flights, the GSMV is your chance to literally drink a glass of Maui's volcanic soils. If complex and dirty reds are your thing, dive in. Did I mention atmosphere? The tasting room stands on a corner of a working ranch in upcountry Maui. It's literally located in what used to be King David Kalakaua's cottage on Maui. Seriously. I'm sipping a glass of wine on the lanai of a king's summer cottage, while looking out over ranch land that slopes down to the Pacific? I wouldn't trade our time at Maui Wine for time at any Napa or Sonoma winery, and we've been to most of them. Did I mention service? Wow. We were looked after by four wonderful women. Some were born and raised on Maui; some moved here a long time back; some moved here recently. Class acts, every one. I read a couple of the other recent negative reviews that suggested some kind of latent racism on the part of the staff. Frankly, I don't buy it. These are sweet, friendly, knowledgeable women. Bottom line: wine tasting in a perfect Hawaiian location, including vintages grown from grapes steeped in Haleakala's soils, sipped in the company of wonderful staff. Don't miss this. read more

Living close to Napa County in California, this is one of the spots that we looked forward to visiting. However, we were truly disappointed. The people working barely spoke to us and the tasting was ridiculous. Nobody talked about the wines or even inquired as to whether we liked them or not. After a grueling drive to get there in the rain, we did purchase a bottle of very so-so pineapple wine, only to find out later that the ABC store sold the same $14 bottle for $13! We could've saved a lot of gas and not bothered with rude people that offered no assistance or information or any talk about the winery itself. Thumbs down on this find!! read more

MauiWine is a true hidden gem! I had no idea this place existed until I was Googling somewhere to go on a quiet afternoon. All their wines were tasty, but the pineapple wine uses no grapes and was obviously the most unique. With ample parking, a serene plot of land, a spacious tasting room, and warm and welcoming staff, what's not to like? They even sell little gifts to take home, from cigars to local soaps and hand-made trinkets. read more

I really loved this experience. I've been to Maui several times and we went on our last vacation to just relax and enjoy--not to really do a ton of activities. We did spend a day in upcountry Maui and I'm so glad we did. It was one of the highlights of our trip. We went to the winery and shared two flights and then did the tour. I see in reading the other reviews that tastings used to be free, but that's no longer the case as they offer flights and full glasses. The wine was good. Some I liked better than others (and the Maui Blanc you can get cheaper at Target and I think several others are available on the island other places) but I really think it's a great experience to try something that you can really only do on Maui. The scenery here is so beautiful, really. And the tour was informative and interesting and our tour-guide was so sweet, smart, and entertaining. Also, it's worth a trip across the street to visit the Ulupalakua Ranch store. I, surprisingly, got a great deal on a western shirt for my dad for Christmas and while we didn't eat there, there was a wide variety of burgers to choose from. read more

We had a friend who brought the Lokelani to a bbq before we went to Maui. Lokelani is a lively little sparking rose wine. We all loved it so of course stopping by Maui Wine to pick up more was a must! The grounds are stunning! Lush greenery with gorgeous large wood carvings line the walk into the tasting room. The tasting room was extremely busy but we found an open spot and the staff was very quick and attentive about getting us samples of the wines. We actually ended up tasting all the wines they had to offer. In addition to the Lokelani, which is a sparking rose, I found the Hula O Maui quite nice as well. The Hula O Maui is a sparking pineapple wine. It is light, crisp and just a touch of sweet. At check out as we were getting the Lokelani and Hula O Maui the lady said that both were delicious with a touch of the Framboise wine added in. Oh my! That is such a great and tasty idea. Needless to say we bought a few more bottles and added in the Framboise as well. The drive to get here is absolutely beautiful and for any wine lover it is a must stop! read more

Color me surprised. I wasn't expecting much coming here, although the view was fantastic, I was skeptical of the wine. First off, I am NOT a fan of the pineapple wines (either the sparkling or the still). Too sweet, and the aftertaste of the pineapple does not lend it self to a nice finish, in my opinion. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by their traditional grape-based wines. In particular, the sparkling rose was the standout - as good as a lot of california sparklings I've had (if not better). Brought a couple bottles home to california and my wife (a sparkling snob) really enjoyed them. Their white still wines were also very good. read more

You learn history of the property and about the wine making process and get a half glass of the sparkling red. Grounds are very nice. I'm not a big wine person, although I do have enjoy a wine festival or winery on occasion. On our family reunion, my wife and I decided to leave the kids with grandparents and drive out here for some "us" time. This was probably one of the nicest little trips we made the entire time. MauiWine, aka Ulupalakua Winery, aka Tedeschi Winery (it's been through so many names and managers) remains a top notch location, both in product and experience. Situated in the far Upcountry of Maui, at the furthest reaches of Kula, the winery sits on a historic 19th century plantation. Once used to entertain Hawai`ian royalty, it's now the oldest winery in Hawai`i and has some of the tastiest wines. The main wines are made using pineapple, giving them a sweetness that's not overpowering. From the dry Maui Blanc to the dessert-like Maui Blush, there is a unique flavor you won't find elsewhere. Pineapple isn't their only claim, as they also use standard grapes and other fruits (like raspberry). From dry to sweet, white to red, there is a range for every palate. Those visiting will find they give complimentary tastings and tours. Tours are twice a day (10:30 and 1:30) and last about 30 minutes. Tastings are offered throughout the day, although limited to three wines per person. All of these experiences are informative, interesting, and well worth the trip you'll make. For those wanting a bit more, there are two paid experiences you can try. They'll occasionally offer the Jail Tour ($15/person), which allows you to taste three Estate Wines in what used to be the plantation jail. These wines are not sold elsewhere, have limited batches, and are of high quality. While you try them, you can learn some more history in the more private tasting room of the "jail" (a wonderful, cozy room that I would live in, if I could). The big visit, however, is the King's Visit. At $50 per person and 60-75 minutes, this will take you everywhere the other tours do and then some. You'll taste not only the above, but also rare, exclusive, or unreleased vintages. We'll have to try it next time! Of course, once you're done with your tour, you'll probably feel the urge to buy some of the wonderful beverages you've discovered. That can weigh heavily on those visiting, as they worry about wine bottles in checked luggage. Luckily for you, they'll ship! Just place your order, pay a little extra (it was $35 for three bottles when we did it) and wait for them to arrive in a couple of weeks. Even better, join their wine club and you'll get 20% off (50% off the King's Visit!) and access to all sorts of exclusives and offers. All you have to do is make two more purchases of 6 bottles each over the next year. It's worth it given you'll probably be buying more in the future anyway! MauiWines is a quaint, historic, winery and I loved trying all of the pineapple wines! The grounds are beautiful, though it's a bit of a trek to get to. We did a flight so we could taste a few of their signature wines and still drive back to Wailea. I enjoyed reading about the history of the land and about the buildings on site. We even saw a guy over in the production area working over the fence, which adds a little intimacy you feel like you're part of the family on the gorgeous grounds. Being located close to the Santa Cruz mountains and not far from Napa, we were curious to try out this winery and especially the pineapple wine. It was quite a drive but beautiful nonetheless. We made it in time to do a tasting before the tour at 1:30. You get 3 free tastings, but with 6 available to choose from, if you're with a partner, you could technically try them all. The pineapple wine is so unique and almost comparable to a prosecco. We enjoyed the 20 minute tour which talked about the property and showed us where all the wine is made. They make shipping very easy, we can't wait to share our pineapple wine with family and friends! Oh and come slightly hungry, the market across the road has awesome burgers and deli sides. read more

I will say, you have to WANT to go here, because it's not close to the beach areas. It will take you about an hour to get there. There's no easy road, and the last part of it is a little windy. Had a reservation for Sunday Our initial server Brian was beyond rude, condescending, haughty, made us feel unwelcome, stupid for asking his recommendation on food selection (goat cheese) and then asking for another option as I knew others in our party may not like goat cheese. He never offered me an option for Brie cheese. I had not had a chance to fully look at the menu because I had been the driver to the winery and he made me feel rushed and hurried which is why I asked for his recommendation. Our samples of wine were the tiniest amount I'm not sure how one could get an accurate sample of the wine flavor. Then when we did order glasses of wine they were filled only 1/4 of the glass - seriously could not have been more than 4 ounces. As we sat trying to have an enjoyable time on our last day in Maui another group were seated at the table next to us. Their wine samples were filled as much as the "actual" glasses of wine we paid for and when they ordered glasses of wine - their wine glasses were at least 3/4 to almost full. Our sever Brian was laughing and speaking nicely with that table and he basically ignored us and we were passed off to get another server who never returned to check on us. We actually had to get up to leave the table to go get our bill and pay it. We were planning on buying a case of wine and have it shipped to our home and normally we are great tippers. Like a 100% plus but not this time. I have never been treated so terribly at a winery. I would have given 0 stars but some of the wine was good. Will never return and won't even order online. read more
