The best part was our server. He went around the room checking with all the customers to ensure everything went well which improved the atmosphere a bit. Other than that it was a subpar experience. Fries were soft, pulled pork was dry, golden barbecue tastes more like honey mustard, okra was undercooked, and the coleslaw is made with sweet relish. The person taking our order was way too quiet. Maurice's has a brisket plate that I enjoy on occasion at the Irmo location. The restaurant is clean and the staff are helpful. The food is well prepared and of good quality. Their selection menu is fairly large and can be confusing. Prices are high in general but their portions are generous. All in all it's a good choice. There are better bbq restaurants in the Columbia area but Maurice's is convenient considering store hours and location. read more

This place was awful. I ordered the 2 meat combo Ribs and chicken. Chose beans and fries as my sides. This is an order at the counter and they bring your food to your table but not full service place. Almost immediatley a lady shows up at our table with food. It was not our food but she insisted it was. There was brisket, pulled pork with some sides that I also didn't order and she insisted it was mine. I showed her the reciept and said it is clearly not. Finally she looked at the order number and said oops, wrong table. She left our table after it had been in fromt of us and TOOK IT TO ANOTHER TABLE. I know this is a health code violation. When I finally got my food the ribs and chicken were coated in mustard sauce. This is South Carolina and I love mustard sauce but I don't like it on ribs. Really good BBQ would always be served with sauce on the side. The highest honor a pitmaster can recieve is to enjoy the meat before you sauce it. The ribs were fair, they pulled easily off the bone but were really small. The mustard sauce was a deal breaker for me though. The chicken was rubbery, this is usually due to trying to cook it low and slow, that is the best way to cook most meat but never, ever chicken. Hot and fast will crisp the skin and hold in the juices. The beans and fries were OK but for 20 bucks I want more than that to be good. The whole place is in desperate need of an update. Hard chairs, worn booths and faded table coverings. The old style decor is fone this just needed to be updated. read more

My husband and I stopped here traveling through. The service was great and food was delicious! We had the Big Joe and Little Joe baskets with pulled pork, lots of fries, slaw, and hush puppies. All of it was great! I usually do not like mustard based sauce, but even that was good! Our pup also enjoyed some pork skins given to us by the kind waiter. We will definitely be stopping by again! If I had to say something negative, it would be the tight squeeze in the drive through for our pickup, but there is also plenty of parking all around so we could have easily jumped out and gotten our food inside. read more

I've stopped at this Maurices BBQ location multiple times but have yet to eat inside. The drive thru was fast today, as it has been on my previous visits. I ordered the BBQ, hash and rice, macaroni and cheese, hush puppies and a large sweet tea. The BBQ was great and had the mustard based sauce. The hash is some of the best hash in the Midlands. The macaroni and cheese has been hit and miss, but today it was great. The hush puppies are very tasty and I could order them as a snack any day of the week. Server at the front desk was super helpful- she showed me the whole buffet and explained the "most popular meat" which was chopped pork, and the "most popular side" which is hash and rice.. So, I had been hearing about this place for quite some time. I was told, "yea but South Carolina BBQ is..." and you get the rest. The mustard based BBQ in South Carolina is what is supposed to set it apart from all the others. We had one meal this past weekend not spoken for and I demanded to see what the fuss was all about. My girlfriend brought me here and told me what to order. I went with the Big Joe and a side of mac and cheese (because of course I did). The Big Joe came piled high with BBQ pork covered in their Southern Gold sauce. I'm not normally a mustard kind of guy but, I have to admit, this was fantastic. I was worried that the sauce would be poured over the pork and the mustardy flavor would be overwhelming. I was surprised to see that the sauce had either been cooked with the meat or was just mixed in after being cooked. Either way it was the perfect balance. The mac and cheese was ok. The staff is very friendly and the food is great, when you can get it. I went a month ago to get some BBQ chicken, and they were out. I went today to get some brisket, and they were out. It's not like I'm going at 9:00 after the dinner rush. This was at 3:00 and 4:00. I would suggest calling before you go to see what they are out of this time, but they NEVER answer the phone. This is a tough review for me. The macaroni and cheese is excellet and the has and rice are better than the BBQ. However, I ordered the brisket and was unimpressed. It lacked the flavor is most brisket and the portion was small for what I paid. I'd recommend staying away from the brisket and ordering other menu items. read more

Hit the buffet up for 13$ PROS; - Ribs were great, albeit we got fresh ones - Shrimp was solid, fried well - Hushpuppies were delicious - Top 3 banana pudding - Potato salad was incredible- perfect amount of all ingredients - VALUE CONS: - I could see if nothing was fresh how it could be a let down. So I have been here many times in the past. Decent bbq and pretty good burgers. However this time I tried them for out Thanksgiving dinner. You can go online and order what you need and pick it the day before Thanksgiving just give them minimum 48 hrs notice. I got the smoked turkey with sauce rolls hash and rice turkey gravy dressing. Man this stuff was fantastic. The turkey was so good. Reheated it in a pan added a little chicken broth covered with foil to keep it moist. Same for the dressing used the pan they supplied the rice hash and gravy ready heated in separate pots. Wife made baked mac and cheese and I did a green bean and seasoned pinto combo. We've been here a few times now and the food is delicious, I just wish they'd advertise their pricing correctly. If it says 17.99 for 2 meat plate, it should be that. I saw afterwards that it shows under the menu to charge extra for the meats, but since it's on almost all choices they should just go ahead and incorporate it in the original menu price instead of an extra 4$ for it and yesterday the brisket was super dry so I brought it home to my dog. Also I'm unsure if their smoked sausage dog is suppose to have a side or not but for 8$ I thought it did. I shared my sides with my husband, who got the dog. Well continue to return but I'll double check the menu in the future. Staff is super nice and fast. Restaurant is kept clean and it's spacious so you can eat your BBQ in peace without someone staring at you making a mess haha. The hickory sauces are the best in my opinion. Decent but not remarkable. You would probably drive past a few better places on your way. I had a sampler of all the meats including pulled pork, chicken, ribs and brisket. I couldn't taste the smoky flavor in any of em. But that didn't mean they weren't good. Seasoning and marinade were A-OK. Just missing the deep smoky flavor similar to other South Carolinian BBQ joints I've witnessed. I'm not big on sauces but if you're in SC you might as well try the mustard sauce, it's pretty good. Change of pace from your vinegar and tomato/brown sugar based sauces. The sides are decent but I was looking forward to Brunswick stew or something similar.
