Tried this place for the first time on a Friday night, but it wasn't busy. We wished the woman taking our order at the counter offered a little more of an explanation/rundown of the menu when we asked questions and told her we hadn't been there before. One of our sides wasn't included, but it also wasn't on the bill so we didn't ask about it. The cornbread and mac and cheese sides were very good. Wow! My cousin recommended this BBQ joint to us. It is a franchised place. It was quite crowded, but a good crowded. It was a revolving door of customers coming in to order, sit down, eat and go. This was my first visit to Mission BBQ and man was I pleasantly surprised! The place smelled amazing the second you walked in. You can tell they're real people trying to make the best BBQ they can at a large scale. The staff was super friendly and kind, giving us recommendations for menu items and assisting customers with gladness. The menu is straightforward with some classic BBQ offerings. I opted for a three meat sampler with a few sides. The brisket was solid, especially for a large chain restaurant. The fatty and lean pieces were flavorful, smoked well, and tender. It didn't need sauce but that Blueridge Smoky Mountain sauce is something special. It has depth of flavor with a bit of sweet and smokiness that's excellent. The turkey was moist and flavorful, which is hard to pull off but they nailed it. The baked beans with brisket was great as well. Notes of brown sugar and spice were great. My only knock on the place was the salmon and the greens. I know what someone might saw, why get salmon at a BBQ place? But I was curious to see if they could pull it off and unfortunately they didn't. It was seasoned well but super dried out. Their greens were also a miss. They had tomato's in them and basically tasted like a bland chicken stock. Although those two options were a miss, the overall experience was great and I will be visiting again. We went to this restaurant based on a restaurant search. When we arrived, it appeared like everyone else thought it was a good idea to go here as well. Upon entering the business we could see numerous pieces of memorabilia from military, law enforcement and Fire all over the walls. There was some neat things to look at and the cups even have famous quotes from people related to military status. Smelled of a wood cooker and smoke as well as the front counter staff being very cordial. They assisted us with ordering our food and we're very efficient in the process. When the food arrived it would look good but at first did not look like there was enough on the plate for my family of four. We did get the three meat and the two meat tray with a couple of sides. Little that I know that the meat was definitely enough. My only complaint is that the sides are really small and more geared for one person due to the little cups that they come in. If you're looking for enough to feed some growing teenagers and two trying not to grow more adults you might want to be mindful how small besides really are. You also have to request the different sauces since the small amount of squeeze bottles they have of them go pretty quickly on a busy day. They were very nice when requesting sauces and gave you as much as you wanted. The mac and cheese was on point and the greens were very flavorful. I love that they have two different kinds of brisket.. one with little to no fat for the crazies and one with normal fat for us big guys it just like taste some true Smoky flavor! Everything here is great! Parking can be a little bit of a navigating feat, however this location is attached to a large shopping center with more parking. You just will need to plan to walk a little longer to get in. The menu is large and diverse, something for everyone. Never had a bad meal here. My favorite thing is all the sauces on the table. No matter what taste people have, there is something for everyone. We normally try them all every time just for the fun of it. Their BBQ sandwich is one of my go-tos in the area when I want that kind of thing. I came here after a graduation for a celebratory lunch. On the walk in I was greeted with a lovely Smokey aroma and felt my stomach say "hot damn!" My wife and I were traveling back to Charleston from Columbia and decided to try a different barbecue restaurant before heading home. We searched for the best barbecue spots in the area, and Mission BBQ was one of the highest-rated restaurants, so we decided to give it a try. From the moment we walked in, we were impressed with the atmosphere. The staff was welcoming and friendly, the restaurant and bathrooms were very clean, and I really appreciated the displays honoring our military and first responders. They clearly put a lot of thought into creating a great environment. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the experience. We ordered the (lean) brisket, pulled pork, baby back ribs, mac and cheese, greens, cornbread, sweet tea, and lemonade. In our opinion, everything was extremely bland. The meats lacked seasoning and flavor, and even adding the smoky barbecue sauce didn't improve them. The mac and cheese tasted like it came from a box, the greens were underwhelming (I've honestly had much better, including Glory Greens), and the cornbread reminded me of church communion crackers--dry and lacking flavor. Even the sweet tea and lemonade were disappointing. Ironically, the best part of the meal was the cold fountain Pepsi. The prices were very reasonable, and I genuinely hate leaving negative reviews because I know how hard restaurant owners and employees work. My intention isn't to hurt the business, but to provide an honest account of our experience. Based on the online reviews, we expected some of the best barbecue around, but unfortunately, it fell well short of our expectations. Story time... this is my last day home before I go back to basic and my grandparents wanted to surprise me with lunch from my favorite place (Panera). We ended up leaving because they were out of, like, everything and I told them that mission was across the way and I've always wanted to try it. So we moseyed on over to try it. Our Romeo group of 7 went here Tuesday for lunch. First time for all of us. They had a great selection and it took us a while to figure out what entrees/sides we wanted. Several of us ordered the Brisket which comes with a piece of cornbread. As a side I got the green beans with bacon. Others got the Cole slaw and collard greens. All the sides were great. I ordered my brisket "wet", so it had a little fat on it and it was excellent. Very tender, very moist. We had others order the chicken sandwich, BBQ pork ribs, and pulled pork sandwich. The ribs were tender and fell off the bone. The chicken sandwich was loaded with a large amount of chicken. Every single one of us liked the food. After ordering my order at the counter it was ready in less than 3 minutes. Everyone's order was quickly served. Everyone was very helpful and friendly, especially Candace. our waitress that came to the table to check on us. She asked if we needed anything else and a couple of the guys needed straws, refills, etc...and she got them for us immediately and also explained some of the upcoming specials for the next week and forward. Apparently they do catering for events and parties. This was a real dining experience. Our group has hit over 150 restaurants in the Cola/Lexington area and surrounding communities, but this is the first one where every single member gave a restaurant a 5.0. rating. We may do a first and return again next week since Candace told us they were having a great special on the day that we dine out. I wish they had one of these over on the Northeast side. This is a Veteran's operation I believe. The interior is decorated with many pictures, sayings for military. At lunch everyday they play the National Anthem and everyone stands for the song and flag. If they were to put on of these on Forest Acres with Fort Jackson close by it would be a gold mine. We look forward to returning. read more

If flavor was a requirement, Mission BBQ would've been shut down yesterday. To the people leaving 5-star Yelp reviews: either you've never had real barbecue or you've lost all your taste buds. I'm from Texas, that alone should tell you I know good BBQ. Whatever Mission BBQ in South Carolina is serving? IT'S NOT IT. I stalked their website for two days before deciding to try it. BIG MISTAKE. My pulled chicken sandwich was so dry it could've been used as packing material. Even drowning it in sauce didn't save it. My daughter's smoked cheeseburger? A giant patty of flavorless nothing. My other daughter's mac and cheese? Bland and as unseasoned as boiled pasta water. I should've known it was going downhill when I asked about the greens and both cashiers gave me the kind of side-eye that says "Don't do it." The ONLY reason this place is getting two stars is because the two Black female cashiers were kind, welcoming, and the only thing in here worth appreciating. This location was going to be a much better option for us, as we live in Charlotte, NC - closest locations were Fayetteville, NC and Roanoke, VA. We have now come to this location a couple of times, so I wanted to provide my review. What we love: *Pulled chicken - this is my husband's favorite item. *Turkey - this is my favorite item. It is probably my favorite turkey from any restaurant. It is so moist and you can taste that smokey flavor. It is prepared to perfection. *Jalapeno Cheddar Sausage - this is cheesy with a little bit of spice. *Pulled Pork - while we have had better pulled pork, this is still a solid option that we enjoy. *Seasonal Sides - potato salad and cheesy potatoes. *Seasonal desserts - peach cobbler and apple cobbler. I've always said it, BBQ is best when you don't have to use sauce. Their meats do not need sauce. Although, they do have some interesting sauces. My favorite is the bay-b-que, but unfortunately it is not at this location - they have other regional sauces instead. A couple of other things I wanted to point out: *While I have not had it from this location, the turkey offered at Thanksgiving is a great deal and is so flavorful. *Their patio is dog friendly! *Staff is super friendly here, as they are at each location I have been to, just a great service standard. I highly recommend Mission BBQ if you are in the area. This was the second time that I visited this location. The first time was not great, food wise. But this visit was incredible! I ordered three ribs and an order if coleslaw and both were delicious.
