I'd just moved to the Upper Valley from DC and was worried I'd have to take monthly flights back there to get a good cut. Fortunately, Yelp saved me. I have called repeatedly with no answer, left messages and even asked about them on Facebook. One of the owners commented that there were "phone issues" and that they were not booking until the fall. This salon has really bad customer service. I was a regular customer and I needed to cancel an appointment due to an emergency. I called twenty-four hours in advance to explain my unexpected need to reschedule and still they refused to extend me any grace at all, instead charging me 50%, almost $200, for the appointment. I think extending one grace cancel to loyal/repeat customers is more than appropriate. It's also just a dumb business practice - I now won't be back, meaning they are now forfeiting thousands of dollars in business from me. Seems silly. read more

Absolutely the Worst Salon Experience of My Life. I had an unbelievably terrible experience at this salon with Rylee and Tiffany. First, Rylee used extremely hot water to wash my hair--so hot that I literally screamed out in pain. Even then, she didn't stop until I clearly said "stop." During the wash, all the water ran down my forehead, my face, and onto my chest, soaking my clothes. Again, I had to yell for them to stop, but Rylee still didn't react until I said "stop" explicitly. Without one "sorry". The most unbearable part was the hair wash itself. Rylee had extremely long nails and was scratching my scalp with them, causing real pain. Rylee didn't use their fingertips at all--just long nails digging into my scalp. I've never seen any hairdresser with such long nails, let alone use them in such an unprofessional and painful way. Still, no "sorry"at all. Then came the haircut, which was equally awful. Rylee clearly did not know how to use scissors properly--completely unskilled. I honestly could have done a better job cutting my own hair at home. When I asked to switch to another stylist, I was told: "No one else is available." I then asked for my hair to be blow-dried, and they told me it would cost $44. When I asked for just a towel so I could dry my soaked clothes and hair myself, they told me there were no towels and that they couldn't give me one. I was told to leave immediately. A woman named Tiffany, who claimed to be the manager, even threatened to call the police if we didn't leave right away. She totally knew what Rylee did to me but she didn't say a "sorry". This was not just poor service--this felt like being treated like a criminal for simply expecting basic decency. This salon was unprofessional, unhygienic, rude, and completely disrespectful. I'm giving this salon 1 star because the woman on the phone was very kind and sympathetic. Otherwise, here is my experience: I live out of the country and wanted to get my hair done when I returned to Hanover, PA. My friend suggested Maven Salon, and so I made an appointment, not realizing it was Maven Salon in Hanover, NH. A crazy coincidence in that there is an exact same salon name in the exact same town, but different state. I went to Maven (Hanover, PA) and another patron said she almost made the same mistake. I immediately called Maven (NH) to explain the situation. Why I'm upset is that Maven (NH) said this has happened before, with prospective clients mis-booking at the 2 salons. Despite acknowledging the clear confusion, and despite my willingness to still provide a full tip and write positive reviews, the manager still charged $150 on my held credit card. If miscommunications like this have happened repeatedly, perhaps it would be best to mention it when a 1st time customer calls to make an appointment... read more

I visited a good friend at Dartmouth recently, and during my stay I stopped in Maven for some hair product that had broken in my checked baggage during the flight. I wasn't familiar with some of their product line, and the sweet young woman who helped me turn me on to some new products that I'm excited to learn about. I thought the time she took for such a small sale was very sweet. I wish I had more time so I could book a haircut. read more

I went in the other day for a blonde balayage and trim with Tennessee and it was AMAZING. She's incredibly talented, and did exactly what I showed her in the picture I brought. She really took the time to talk with me about what I wanted and was super attentive. The whole vibe was also wonderful, with a high-end feel but still comfortable and cozy. I have had such a poor experience at this salon. The stylists are young and inexperienced and quite unprofessional. They have canceled appointments on me at the last minute. They also have a high staff turn over with stylists overall who just suddenly "move on" from working for the salon.They talk about buying booze and partying in front of customers. The front desk girls are never paying attention to detail when ringing people up and booking services. Have been getting my hair and nails done here for the past few months. I even set up an appointment for my 14 year old daughter and they gave her only half of her booked service that was scheduled. They did a super quick trim and overcharged her because she was unaware of what the cost was supposed to be. I am done! They think they are 'high end' and act like they are doing you a favor for mediocre services and high prices! Just because you are salon in Hanover doesn't mean you don't have provide good customer service. It's a snoody salon with okay services and an inflated price point. read more

Worst salon experience I have ever had. I booked a blowout with a level 5 stylist and was quoted $80 (already more pricey than an average blowout in NYC). I described that I wanted loose curls - standard for my blowouts and usually done with a round brush. After over an hour my hair looked terrible and nothing like what I asked for. Throughout the experience the stylist made repeated negative comments about my hair texture, thickness and length and how hard it was (this is typically done in 30 minutes for me in NYC). Since the final product was not what I asked for they offered to use hot tools to add curls to my hair, without telling me that this would cost extra. Ultimately it took almost two hours to do my hair, the results were mediocre and staff was rude. They charged me close to $200 for time and effort. read more

I have been a client at Maven salon for 10 years, I can no longer recommend this salon due to there policies. My daughter was scheduled for a haircut at 5 pm she came home from school at 3 pm with a horrible cough, puffy swollen eyes and a red nose that wouldn't stop running and sneezing non stop. I called Maven salon out of respect for the staff to reschedule I was told " we have a rescheduling fee." I asked how much that would be? The receptionist said"$85. $85 to keep there staff safe I asked, yes I'm sorry she said" your daughter is scheduled for an hour long hair cut" now why on gods green earth would a hair cut take an hour or cost $85 for a 16 yr old to get her hair trimmed yes trimmed straight across the bottom for $85. Well we're keeping the appointment so sorry Hanover if Covid spreads thru your town you know who to blame. Maven salon andthere policies. I have been to this place thrice now, for eyebrow and upper-lip waxing and a haircut--and that will be enough for me. The waxing experience was OK: they left my eyebrows slightly uneven and I wasn't satisfied. However, the haircut was the truly disappointing experience. I went in for a trim and having read on their website that they charged $35 upwards depending on how specialized the work it required was, didn't think that I would be charged exorbitantly. But that's what happened. For a trim that left my hair looking hardly any different from what it was before, I was charged $60. As a student, I can hardly afford that and would not have gone in had I known better. Still shocked, I called the salon when I came back home, and the stylist apologized and told me that she would be willing to offer me a $10 refund. When I went to the salon to get my refund, I was told that she hadn't explained and that the $10 would be applied to my bill the next time I came in. Well, I am certainly not coming back, so they can keep the $10. Students in the area with a budget are better off going to Hannah's in Lebanon for waxing. I'll be checking out places in WRJ for a haircut the next time! read more

Dianne is outstanding. She is the only reason I return to this salon. Her thirty plus years of experience shines through her professionalism, and ability to understand what the customer needs. I have extra long hair and more often than not, the simplest trim quickly turns into an ordeal - as some hairstylists want to add that "oomph" or do something "trendy" with your boring old-fashioned hair, which is fun only when you're looking for something like that. Dianne is extremely patient and pays attention to minute details. Her vision has always been on point. I know how difficult it is to trim and style long thick hair and I truly appreciate stylists who are adaptable, professional, no faff. I highly recommend her. read more

Mixed feelings about We're Makin Waves - the good: I've always been happy with my haircuts here, especially with Meredith. She's awesome. The salon's renovation has really made the space a lot nicer too. I never felt products were pushed on me, which I appreciated - it's a treat for me to go here and I don't have the time or money to spend, beyond what a good haircut costs. the bad: I've always felt a bit brushed-off here - maybe it's a customer service philosophy, or just the good old' New England gruffness that, after five years here, I'm still adjusting to. Normally I wouldn't mind, but this past week, an appointment I booked didn't show up on the calendar and I felt it could have been better handled by the staff. Everyone is busy, but it took quite a bit of careful planning for me to get there only to find that there was no one to see me... what a let down! I know this was likely an honest mistake, but I think more effort could have been made to make amends or at least look into the system that incorrectly confirmed my appointment. Instead I was given a light hearted 'Sorry!' and shown the door. Of course, the next mutually available appointment is weeks away from now and, here's the kicker, prices go up 10% tomorrow. I'm actively looking for another salon to go to - perhaps one where the online reservation system works - but I don't want to risk a bad haircut. I've been going to Yvonne for the past year or so, and she is fantastic! She does a fabulous job cutting and styling my hair, she's funny and she's always willing to show me a new way to style my hair or a quick up-do for an upcoming event. The salon itself is nicer now after a recent remodel. The layout makes more sense and the waiting room is much more comfortable. I was very hesitant to get a haircut here after seeing the negative Yelp reviews. I only wanted a trim, though, so I figured it was worth the gamble. Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised. The online booking process is really easy, and you can choose not only the time, but also the stylist (with the price for the service listed). Once there, my stylist was awesome--very friendly, and very eager to work with me to get the exact length and style that I wanted. (Her name was Emma--highly recommended!) She asked me several times throughout the process if the length was good, and when she had some time left over at the end, she used it to give me a slightly fancier blowout than normal. Total cost was $35 for the cut, which I thought was very reasonable. All in all, a very positive experience! I rarely do Yelp reviews, but there was just such a disconnect between the reviews here and my experience that I felt obligated to speak up and offer my counter opinion. read more

When I got there, she made me wait for half an hour, even though I told her I had a time limit. This salon has awful service. The staff are OK, but nowhere near as friendly and welcoming as people in other salons I've been to. Most of them come off as very unwelcoming and arrogant, like they know better (of course, they do - but they treat you like you know nothing and don't listen to what you have to say). I once came and asked for a balayaged ombré and showed the stylist a LOT of pictures, only for her to say, "yeah, I think highlights would look better so I'm just going to do that." My friend also had a similar experience, asking for one color only for them to do what they wanted and give her something different. That in itself comes off as completely unprofessional. That's not even the worst of it. I came for a consultation and spoke with the receptionist about my desired hair colour (a silvery lavender) and she said that would be $200-300, which was expensive but I decided it would be worth it because I had heard good things about the salon. When I had my hair done, the stylist said that she couldn't finish my hair in one session. I understand that, but I would have liked to be told this at the consultation so I could plan out the second one. My hair was essentially yellow with a bit of pink at the top by the end - nothing like the pictures I had shown and the swatches I had asked for. I accepted this because I thought it could be fixed in a second appointment. However, this appointment ended up costing over $300 despite being half finished and more than the estimated price of the whole thing. I was told that the follow up appointment wouldn't take very long or cost very much, because it was just finishing it off. I called to book the appointment, and not only did they say it would cost $100, but also that it couldn't be done until THREE MONTHS after the original appointment. It's one thing to need more than one session to reach a desired color, given that silver is a hard color to achieve, but having to have a three month gap between the appointments is unacceptable. I did end up managing to get an earlier appointment after some rearranging. I reminded the stylist of the silver/lavender color I wanted and she said she remembered and knew what she was doing. She said she would be bleaching it more and using the same toner as last time to get to that color, and I'm not the expert, so I just agreed. However, by the end, my hair was EXACTLY THE SAME yellow color with a bit of pink that I had been given before. It was still completely unfinished, and the stylist insisted that it was fine despite it being clearly way off the color we had agreed upon. Between the two appointments, I had toned and dyed my hair a little just to see me through to the next appointment; when I came into the second one, it was an ashy blonde with lilac and pink tones. The color I came in with was closer to the color I wanted than the color I left with. The stylist even said that she wouldn't blow dry it because it would take too long, which to me again seems unprofessional especially because the appointment ended up being a whopping $150. Overall I paid $500 for two appointments that both gave me the exact same result of brassy hair that was nowhere near what I asked for. The salon messed me around so much with prices and booking, which might have been somewhat acceptable if the result had turned out as the color I requested on my consultation.
